EPISODE 13

Kathleen had a big smile on her face as she worked that morning. Somehow everything seemed different now. Although she still felt a bit awkward about d@t!ngher boss, Pete was very un-derstanding and tried to make it easy for her. They had both talked about his plan for the restaurant as they ate dinner together. That had been awkward too, eating from the same plate with him, but he didn’t seem to mind.

Earlier that morning he had walked into the kitchen a few minutes after she started preparing breakfast, and had given her a good morning k!sson her forehead, both cheeks, the ti-p of her nose, her chin, and then herl-ips. It had made her feel like a silly teenager.

“This one you’re smiling with all your teeth, did something good happen?” Dave asked with a teasing smile as he watched Kathleen.

Kathleen giggled at that, and raised both hands to her cheek as though she was trying to st©p herself from smiling too much, “I guess I’m just happy,” she said with a smile as she looked at him.

“It is obvious. I guess oga is doing a good job,” Dave whispered ma-king her giggle.

“Abeg leave me alone let me work,” she said as she returned her attention to her l@pt©p. Soon her phone started ringing and she picked it up when she noticed it was Pete who was calling, “Hello sir!” She answered before she could st©p herself ma-king Pete sigh. This was one frustrating woman he was d@t!ng.

“Sorry,” she said with a wince when she realized what she had said.

“Forget it. Just come over to my office,” Pete said impatiently.

“Why? It’s not lunch break yet,” she said as she glanced at the wall clock in the office. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t even up to an hour since they arrived at work.

“I’m missing you. I want to see your face,” Pete said, ma-king herl-ips pu-ll up in a smile as she tried not to laugh.

“I’m sure you have my picture on your phone, view that,” Kathleen whispered so her colleagues wouldn’t hear her.

“Come on! I can’t k!ssyour picture or see the shy smile I know is on your face right now that I teased you,” Pete complained ma-king her laugh.

“I’m busy, and you’re distracting me,” Kathleen complained.

“You won’t be busy if I fire you, will you?” Pete threatened ma-king her giggle.

“That is low even for you,” Kathleen said with a grin.

“Have you forgotten how petty I am alre-ady?” He asked, reminding her of that Jollof rice incident.

Kathleen couldn’t hold back her laughter this time when she remembered that day, “You were really mean!”

“If you don’t come to me, I’m going to come to your office and sit with you. I won’t even mind your colleagues,” Pete threatened.

“Come on!”

“Are you coming or not? You have the count of five to make up your mind,’

“What?”

“One.”

“But I have work to do.”

“Two.”

“This isn’t fair at all.”

“Three.”

“Okay, I won’t stay more than five minutes.”

“Four,” Pete said as he stood up from his chair.

“Fine! I’m coming now!” Kathleen rushed to say as she stood up, and observed that her colleagues were all staring at her and listening in on her conversation.

“Good. Hurry then,” Pete said with a big smile as he hung up. He knew he was being childish and bossy, but he loved it. He just wanted to see her as much as he could now that she was his girlfriend. He wanted to spend all the time with her, that way it wouldn’t seem like he was proposing to her out of the blues.

“Sorry,” Kathleen said apologetically to her colleagues as she walked out of the office. She felt her phone conversation had probably disturbe-d their work.

“She was on the phone with oga just now, wasn’t she?” Rosy asked Dave curiously, but he ignored her.

“It’s like they are d@t!ngfor real. Wow! She is so lucky. I’m happy for her o,” Sandra said with a big smile.

Thankfully Pete’s secretary wasn’t back from the conference yet, so Kathleen didn’t have to face her. She walked over to Pete’s door and knocked politely before opening the door. She didn’t see Pete in his seat, so she pushed the door further open, and almost jumped in surprise when he jumped out from behind the door.

“Jesus! Oh my God! Why did you do that?” Kathleen asked, glaring at him angrily, while he laughed at her.

“Sorry, I got excited while waiting for you. So you weren’t missing me? You didn’t want to see me?” Pete asked with a sad face as he pu-ll-ed her close to himself and shut the door behind her.

“It’s work hours. We can’t be mixing business with plea-sure. What would you say if you had two employees who are d@t!ng, and they spend work hours rom-ncing?” Kathleen asked with a frown.

“As long as they make sure they get their job done at the end of the day, and I don’t catch them, then we are good,” Pete @ssured her.

“Isn’t that hypocritical coming from a boss that would rather spend his office hours rom-ncing his girlfriend?” Kathleen asked with a snort ma-king him grin.

“I wasn’t planning on rom-ncing you, but now that you mention it, I don’t think it is a bad idea,” Pete said, wiggling his brows playfully as he pu-ll-ed her closer to himself and tickled her while she struggled to free herself from his grasp while giggling.

Neither of them heard the door as it opened, but soon they heard the shutter of a c@m£ra and both glanced up, surprised to see Ken taking pictures of them, “Caught right in the act!” Ken exclaimed triumphantly, while Kathleen hid behind Pete in embarr@ssment, which made Ken chuckle in amusement.

“St©p ma-king my baby shy,” Pete warned, glaring at Ken playfully, but win-ked at him before turning to look at Kathleen.

“Okay, now that I’ve seen your face I’m okay. You can return to work,” he whispered to her, and then fli-cked his ton-gue over her ear playfully ma-king her g@sp in surprise as she hurried out of his office without sparing either him or Ken a glance. Immediately she shut the door behind her Pete chuckled in amusement.

“I’m in love with that lady!” He announced ma-king Ken roll his eyes.

“Anyone with eyes knows that alre-ady. I wonder why you kept denying it this wh0le time. Anyway, you have my blessings,” Ken said with a grin. He has called Pete the previous evening after his conversation with Ella, and Pete had told him he was back from his trip and had explained he returned because of Kathleen.

“As what? Father of the bride abi groom?”

“As future brother-in-law of the groom,” Ken said with a wi-nk.

“Brother-in-law? You talked to Kemi alre-ady?” Pete asked in surprise.

“Yeah! I need to tell you something. Don’t get mad, just listen, okay?” Ken pleaded, turning serious all of a sudden.

“I figured you’re my best friend and I shouldn’t keep secrets from you. So after our conversation last night, I figured I should open up to you about certain things, even if I know your sister is probably going to kill me if she finds out, but I’m praying you won’t make the mistake of telling her I told you anything,” Ken said ma-king Pete raise a questioning brow.

Pete listened keenly as Ken explained all that had happened between him and Ella while he was abroad, and how he had finally summoned the courage to ask Ella out, and how Ella had accepted him with conditions attached, “That explains it then. I figured something happened between the both of you for her to be giving you such cold treatment when you both met at my house,” Pete said with a sigh.

“You’re not mad?” Ken asked curiously.

“Come on! Yes, she is my sister, and you’re my best friend, but you both are adults. I know she has always loved you and I was worried about it before, but knowing you feel the same way about her is cool. Just don’t hurt her, that’s all,” Pete said, and Ken smiled at Pete.

“God! I feel so relieved now! But you have to keep acting like you don’t know, okay?” Ken pleaded.

“Sure. I will try,” Pete said with a chuckle as he looked at his best friend.
____________

“What?” They asked in unison.

“You heard me. Let them go. I appreciate your help, but things would become messy if the police should probe in further and find out my stepmother was involved in this. It could cause serious problems for my father’s political ambition. He loves her and this could really hurt him too. I’m not sure I want him to know about any of this. So just let them go. I will resolve my issues with Amaka myself,” Kimberly said and walked away before either Eric or Wumi could say anything else.

Eric sighed, and without saying another word he returned in,side the station, “I want to speak with him in pri-vate,” Eric said to the policemen while looking at Kingsley.

The policemen looked at him skeptically before glancing at Kingsley who quic-kly nodded his head in agreement. He knew his freedom was no longer dependent on his father’s position, but rather on Eric. The policemen led them to a pri-vate room at the left hand of the hall and soon they were both seated.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know who you are,” Kingsley said apologetically. He knew this time around he had outdone himself, and he had no right to be proud. If he didn’t handle this properly this could be the end of him, and no one would be able to save him.

“You need to know who a person is before you can respect them?” Eric asked with a slightly raised brow. He really wanted to deal with this idiot and the other guys involved, but unfortunately, he had to handle things as Kimberly wanted.

“I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry,” he quic-kly corrected.

“I don’t care about your apology. If it was up to me, I’ll make sure you’re thrown in jail, but my wife doesn’t want that. I just want to know how you managed to come up with this plan, and how you were able to execute it,” Eric said, wanting to see if Amaka’s name would come up in the conversation.

“I know you won’t believe me, but I didn’t just come up with this wh0le idea by myself. A lady approached me. Your wife’s friend, I don’t know if they’re friends or sisters, but according to her, your wife snatched her first love. She wanted us to get back at your wife, so she c@m£ up with the idea. I’m sorry,” Kingsley said with a pleading look. Eric could tell he wasn’t exactly remorseful for what he had done, and the only reason he was feeling sorry was because he knew that he had stepped on the wrong foot this time.

“What is this person’s name and how did she approach you?”

“Her name is Joy. She called me and set up a meeting at a fast-food restaurant.”

Joy? Amaka lied about her identity? “What does this Joy look like?” Eric asked, leaning forward in his seat to take a closer look at Kingsley.

Kingsley narrowed his eyes as he tried to remember her features, “She is tall, light in complexion, she isn’t fat or slim, just normal. She is busty, and she is gap-toothed,” Kingsley finished.

“You’re both in a relationsh!p?” Eric asked, taking him by surprise since he hadn’t expected Eric to ask him that.

“No. We had S-x, but that was just it,” Kingsley explained.

“Can you call her?” Eric asked, and Kingsley shook his head.

“She does the calling. Her line is always unreachable, so I can’t hear from her until she calls me,” Kingsley said apologetically.

“And you didn’t think that was weird?”

“She said there is no MTN network in her place, so she can only call when she leaves her house. So I didn’t think it was a big deal,” Kingsley explained, and Eric nodded. That made s-en-se.

Eric heard his Aunty’s voice outside, so he stood up, “That is fine. You should stay locked up in the cell until we make up our mind whether or not we want to take the case to court. That should teach you,” Eric said as he stood up to leave. It was good enough that none of them knew the identity of the lady who had approached him since the Kingsley guy was stupid. That way he could punish them without affecting Kimberly and her family.

“But I thought…”

“You thought what? Did you really think I would let you go without punishing you simply because I asked you a couple of questions? I asked you to stay away from my wife yet you pu-ll-ed that stupid stunt. You’re lucky I’m still being nice,” Eric said with a scoff before walking out of the office.

“Good morning aunty,” Eric greeted immediately he got to where his aunty was standing with the Deputy Police officer and Wumi.

His aunty excused herself from the D.P.O and moved to the side with Eric and Wumi, “I hear you want to let them go?” His aunty asked curiously.

“No. I have no intention of letting any of them go,” Eric said, ma-king Wumi give him a questioning glance, while his aunty nodded in agreement.

“Good,” She said before returning to where the D.P.O was standing, “They should remain in your custody until we decide whether or not we want to charge them to court. If I find out you re-leased any one of them, the case will be charged to court immediately. P@ss this message to the commissioner and let him know that if he so much as tries to go against this, the case will be charged to court immediately, and I will make sure his son gets nothing less than five years. Am I clear?” Eric’s aunty asked the D.P.O, and he nodded in un-derstanding.

“Good. I guess we are done. I have to be in court to preside over a case soon, so I have to leave,” She said before turning to Eric, “I was hoping I would meet your wife today, I hope you’ll bring her to see me soon,” She said with a small smile and patted his arm fondly.

“Thank you ma. We will pay you a visit soon,” Eric promised.

“You had better. Wumi my darling, I hope to see you soon too. Your cousins miss you,” She said with a smile as she embr@ced Wumi.

“I will visit you soon,” Wumi promised with a smile as their aunty led them to where her car was parked and got in,side.

Immediately she left Wumi turned to Eric, “Why did you do that after what Kimberly said?” She asked with a frown.

“Don’t worry. He doesn’t know who Amaka is. She lied about her identity, so we can punish them without implicating Kim or her family. I have to go and see Kimberly’s father now. I’ll drop you off on the way,” Eric said as they both headed for the car. All that was left now was for him to find a way to get Kimberly to forgive him.
***********

Amaka was still feeling very anxious as she tried to figure out what to do about Eric’s instruction when a maid knocked on her door, “Madam, aunty Kimberly is here to see you,” the maid announced, ma-king Amaka’s heart skip a beat. Kimberly was here? What was she going to do? What was she supposed to say? Amaka wondered as she quic-kly picked up her phone and opened her be-droom door. She was as thankful that her husband wasn’t home at the moment and had gone out for a political meeting.

She pasted a smile on her face as she descended the stairs, “Kimberly…”

“Let’s talk outside unless you want them to hear us,” Kimberly said in a cold tone, without returning her smile.

If Amaka had been harboring the hope that all was well, Kimberly’s tone just shattered that hope, “Can we talk upstairs instead?” Amaka asked, still trying to be cheerful. Talking outside could be risky since she never could tell what Kimberly was going to say or who might be in a corner eavesdropping on their conversation.

Without saying a word Kimberly took the stairs and led Amaka up the stairs to her be-droom. The moment Amaka walked throu-gh the door Kimberly sl@pped her h@rd across the face, “That is for cheating on my father,” and before Amaka could recover from the shock she sl@pped her h@rd again, “And this is for plotting against me.”

Amaka looked at Kimberly wi-de-eyed as she raised her hand to her cheek which was smarting from the sl@p, “I…”

“What gave you the right to do that to me? How can you even call yourself my father’s wife if you can do something like that to me?” Kimberly asked, struggling to control her temper.

There was no point in denying anything. If Kimberly knew she had cheated on her father, then she knew everything alre-ady, so denying it all would be pointless. But how did they find out? She was very certain that Kingsley didn’t know who she was, so what happened? “I’m sorry,” Amaka said in a small voice as she lowered herself to the ground.

“Sorry? You are sorry? Do you have any idea what could have happened to not just me, but my father’s political ambition had your plan worked? Do you even love him at all? Did you st©p to consider what that would do to him?” Kimberly asked, struggling not to cry.

“It was just a one-time thing… I’ve never cheated on your father before…”

“And I’m supposed to believe that?” Kimberly asked incredulously, “How on earth could you connive with people for them to drug me, r@p£ me and make videos? Don’t you have a conscience?” Kimberly half yelled at her.

“I swear on my life, that was the first time. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…”

“To what? Hurt me? You have no idea how many times I’ve heard that statement since yesterday, so save me the drama,” Kimberly said with a wry smile, “I suppose you wanted to get rid of me so that you could reconnect with my husband, right?” Kimberly asked, and almost kicked herself for still referring to Eric as her husband.

“No. That is not true. I’m sorry. I…”

“You claim it was your first time cheating on my father, but that wasn’t going to be the last time, was it? I’m sure had Eric been willing to have you, you would have thrown yourself into his be-d, wouldn’t you?” Kimberly asked with disgust.

“I don’t know what my father saw in you or why he chose to get married to someone like you, but that is none of my business. Because of the love, I have for my father and because I don’t want to see him get hurt or do anything that might affect his political ambition, I’m going to let this slide. I’m not going to make a big deal out of this… But stay away from me. If you so much as get on my nerves again, I don’t know what I might be f0rç£d to do to you. So keep your distance… And I don’t want to see you anywhere near my husband either,” Kimberly warned before reaching for the doorknob.

Amaka couldn’t believe that Kimberly was going to let her off the hook. She almost coll@psed in tears as a feeling of relief washed over her, “Thank you. I’m so sorry I tried to do that to you. Thank you for letting this slide I promise I won’t…” She st©pped when Kimberly suddenly g@sped.

Kimberly’s eyes wi-de-ned in surprise when she saw her father standing by the door with a stricken look on his face, “Dad?” Kimberly asked, hoping her father hadn’t heard them.

“What were you talking about?” s£nator Abamba asked as he walked in,side the room. Amaka’s heart st©pped for a second when she heard her husband’s voice, and she realized she was in trouble now.

“Honey, I can explain,” Amaka pleaded as she looked to Kimberly for help.

“Dad I…”

“You cheated on me?” s£nator Abamba asked as he looked at his wife who was still kneeling on the floor.

“No honey. I didn’t. It was just a misun-derstanding. Kim, plea-se tell him, plea-se,” she pleaded with Kimberly desperately.

“Tell him yourself. I promised to keep your dirty secret, I didn’t promise to lie to my father on your behalf,” Kimberly hissed at her before walking out of the room, leaving both couples to resolve their differences themselves.
