EPISODE 5

“So have you told her the truth yet?” Pete asked Eric as they both walked out of the plane after they arrived in Lagos, “I mean does your wife know who you are now?”

“No. Not yet. But I plan on doing so really soon,” Eric said as he took out his phone to give Kimberly a call. He wished she had called him to tell him about what was happening with her, but he could also un-derstand that she was feeling very sad, and maybe she could have tried his number while he was on the plane, so he couldn’t blame her too much.

“Oh! That’s great then. I wish you good luck,” Pete said as he tried to order a bolt ride. He couldn’t call Chuka to pick him up since he wanted to surprise them. He was alre-ady looking forward seeing the surprise on Kathleen’s face.

“Thank you. See you another time, and my regards to your best friend and the ladies,” Eric said with a wave as he walked away from Pete.

He couldn’t deny that he was feeling very anxious about the wh0le confession thing. A p@rt of him wanted to tell her the truth immediately, but another p@rt of him just wanted to console her, and help her get over her sadness at least for the night, before telling her about it.

It was almost late in the evening alre-ady, and he needed to go home to Kimberly first. He would console her, and spend the night with her, then tomorrow when she leaves for work he would go over to the police station to see the people who had dared to t©uçh his wife. After that he would meet with Amaka, and put an end to her madness once and for all. Then take Kimberly out on a d@t£ and tell her the wh0le truth, before going for the award ceremony, and if possible, he would take her along with him, if she lets him. Having come to that conclusion, Eric dialed her number as he flagged down a cab.

“She still hasn’t woken up?” Wumi asked Prisca with a concerned frown immediately she walked into Kimberly’s house. She had spent more time than she had planned at the police station, and had called Prisca to check on Kimberly earlier, but Prisca had told her Kimberly was asleep.

Prisca shook her head sadly, “No. I’ve seen her sad before, but not this way,” Prisca said, trying not to cry, “What happened?” Wumi sighed as she looked at Prisca, and then narrated everything to her.

“And you just happened to be there?” Prisca asked, trying not to sound suspicious.

“Yeah. I needed to speak to her about something…”

“About what?” Prisca asked again.

Wumi could tell Prisca was suspicious of her, “About her meeting with my brother. The police will be questioning the guys, and hopefully before tomorrow we will know who s£nt them and why,” Wumi said, shifting the t©pic away from her.

“I wish Eric was around. I’m sure he would have known how to handle the situation. I don’t know what to do. I wish I could go over to the station and hit those guys, but I can’t. I’ve never felt more useless,” Prisca said with a sniffle as she wiped a tear from her face.

“Maybe you should give her stepmother a call and ask her about the job. She should know something about it since she is the reason Kim was at the h0tel,” Wumi suggested, ma-king Prisca pause as she remembered Wumi had an issue with Amaka. Was she trying to make this about Amaka?

“Is there something you know that we don’t know?” Prisca asked Wumi curiously.

“Huh? Like what?” Wumi asked, feigning confusion.

“Anything. Maybe something you think we should know,” Prisca suggested.

“I’m sure you will find out whatever it is you need to know sooner than later. Why not go check on her and see how she is doing?” Wumi suggested, c0cking her head towards the be-droom area.

Prisca looked at her as though she wanted to say something, and then decided to just let it be, and gave her a nod, “I will be back,” She said as she stood up and headed for Kimberly’s room.

Immediately Kimberly heard Prisca’s footsteps, she shut her eyes and pretended to be asleep as she had been doing since she got home. She really didn’t want to talk to anyone. She just wanted to be left alone.

“Kim? Are you still sleeping?” Prisca asked as she walked over to the be-dside and sat down beside her. Prisca looked down at Kimberly’s face sadly. Although her eyes were closed, but the lids looked black. That was because she had kept wiping her eyes with her hankie forgetting about her mascara and eyeliner which stained her face. Her nose also looked red as a result of always wiping it and b!owing h@rd into her hankie.

“I’m sorry, Kim. I shouldn’t have listened to you. Maybe if I was there with you, you wouldn’t have had to experience any of that,” Prisca said apologetically, ma-king Kimberly want to roll her eyes. What could she have changed? The intention of the people or what? Wumi had st©pped the worse from happening because she happened to know one of the people there. Had Prisca been there instead of Wumi, maybe they would have both been in danger.

Kimberly almost jumped in surprise when Prisca’s phone started ringing, “Hey Eric!” Prisca said as she stood up and quic-kly left the room, leaving Kimberly who was now frowning in her fake sleep.

Why was Eric calling Prisca instead of her? Kimberly wondered as she sat up on her be-d and reached for her phone. She sighed when she remembered she had placed it on airplane mode earlier. Maybe he had been trying to reach her and had been unable to, hence had called Prisca. She also remembered she was supposed to call him back after her phone conversation with her client earlier, but she had forgotten to.

She l@ydown on the be-d once again, and folded herself like a foetus, with her eyes closed. Hopefully he would ask Prisca to bring the phone to her. Although she didn’t want to talk to anyone, but she definitely wouldn’t mind talking to Eric.

“Babe.”

Was she hearing things now? Why was she hearing Eric’s voice? Kimberly wondered, until she felt someone sit down beside her, and then she perceived his perfume. She slowly opened her eyes, and saw him staring at her face with a concerned frown.

“Eric?” She asked, hoping it wasn’t just a wishful thought or a dream.

“I missed you,” Eric murmured as he reached out to t©uçh her face. She sat up immediately and wra-pped her arms around him, before letting herself give in to another round of tears.

Eric felt his heart shatter into different many tiny pieces as he held her ti-ghtly to himself while she sobbe-d, “I’m here babe… Everything will be fine, I promise.” Eric said as he k!$$£d her forehead and then tried to raise her chin so he could look into her eyes.

All Kimberly felt was relief that Eric was right here with her now. Nothing else seemed to matter to her anymore. As long as she had Eric with her, all was well with her world again. She sniffled as she let him look into her face which was messy with tears. He had seen her cry too many times alre-ady for her to feel self-conscious anymore.

“You don’t have to worry about anything anymore. I’m going to take care of everything.” He promised as he looked into her eyes and held her gaze while wiping her tears with his handkerchief.

“I thought you were supposed to come back tomorrow?” She asked with a sniffle as she tried to compose herself.

“Yeah. But I decided to come earlier. I was missing you and I was worried about you.” Eric said with a worried frown, and that earned him a wobbly smile.

“I’m glad you are back, thank you for coming back,” Kimberly said with a sigh as she leaned into him again, and let him hold her close.

“Hold on,” Eric said as he pushed her away, and then took off his shoes so he could climb on the be-d before pu-lling her back on his b©dy so she could lie down comfortably on his che-st.

“How is your father’s health?” Kimberly asked after some time.

“He is getting better. They s£nt their regards.” Eric told her.

Kimberly nodded but said nothing as she l@yon his b©dy inhaling his scent. Everything about Eric was ther@p£utic to her, “Did they tell you what happened?” Kimberly asked after the comfortable silence between them had dragged on for some time.

“Do you want to tell me what happened?” Eric asked instead, and Kimberly bobbe-d her head as she sat up.

“Go on then, I’m listening,” Eric said, giving her an encouraging smile.

Kimberly took in a de-ep breath, “After our phone conversation I had to go to the h0tel…”
“… And then Mimi c@m£ with the cops and took them away.” Kimberly finished with a shudder.

“I’m glad you listened to me and didn’t take the drink. Good girl.” Eric said with a smile as he drew her back to himself and patted her hair fondly.

“Do you think all of this will ever come to an end? Will they ever st©p doing this to me?” Kimberly asked, looking at him with sad eyes.

“I will make them st©p. Don’t worry, it will all end very soon.” He promised.

“Have you had anything to eat all day? What have you eaten?” Eric asked ma-king her frown.

“I’m not hungry. I don’t want to eat anything.”

“Come on, I will fix you something nice. You can’t remain in your room all day.” Eric said as he tried to stand up, but she held on ti-ghtly to his w@!st ma-king him chuckle.

“I’m going to be here with you all night, holding you. So you need to at least eat.” He suggested, but she didn’t budge.

“I haven’t eaten all day, and I’m so hungry,” he said, and she quic-kly re-leased him.

“I will cudd-leyou after you eat,” he said as he stood up from the be-d, and walked over to her dressing table. He took out a face wipe from the pack, “Here, clean your face.” He said as he handed it to her.

Kimberly reluctantly stood up from the be-d as she took the wipe from him, but Eric gr@bb£d her by the wrist and drew her to himself, “I like you a lot, you know?” He asked, ma-king her heart skip a beat.

“Like? I thought it was love?” Kimberly asked without meeting his gaze.

“Good. I was just checking if you got what I said over the phone.” Eric said with a wi-nk, and then gave her a smacking k!sson her l!pbefore walking out of the room, leaving Kimberly who was now looking at the door with a big smile on her face.

“How is she?” Prisca asked immediately Eric joined her and Wumi in the living room.

“She will be out soon. I need to fix something for her to eat,” Eric said as he walked into the kitchen, ignoring Wumi who was looking at him curiously.

“I will help. Mimi, you can check on Kim.” Prisca suggested as she followed Eric into the kitchen.

“What do you want to prepare?” She asked as Eric walked around the kitchen like he was searching for something.

“Probably noodles or spaghetti. Something that wouldn’t take too much time.” Eric said as he opened the cupboard where the carton of spaghetti and noodles are kept and took out a pack of spaghetti, while Prisca walked over to the refrigerator to take out the tomato and pepper so she could dice them.

Neither of them said a word to each other as they worked, until Prisca broke the silence, “Thank you.”

Eric glanced at her with a slightly raised brow, “What for?”

“For loving Kim, and caring about her the way you do.” Prisca said, struggling not to get very emotional, “I know I have been annoying and I’ve doubted you a lot in the past, and I’m sorry. I was only trying to look out for Kim the best way I know how to.” Prisca said, ma-king Eric raise a brow.

“Why? I mean, why are you so concerned about her? I know this goes beyond you trying to be a good friend. Are you perhaps overcompensating for something you did in the past? Did you do something you feel guilty about?” Eric asked, ma-king her look away guiltily.

“I feel guilty because I didn’t do anything, not because I did something,” Prisca confessed.

“I don’t think I un-derstand you.”

Prisca looked into Eric’s face, and he noticed she seemed to be struggling with tears, “My father… I watched him… I saw him do things to her,” Prisca managed to blurt out, ma-king Eric’s eyes wi-den in un-derstanding.

“I always hid and pretended not to see or know what was going on. I never st©pped him. I was too scared.” Prisca said as a tear dropped from her eyes. “Maybe if I had challenged my father, things wouldn’t be so difficult for her by now,” Prisca said, ma-king Eric shake his head.

“…”

“You don’t know any of that for sure. And I don’t think you should blame yourself for something your father did.” Kimberly said before Eric could say anything.

Prisca turned around to look at Kimberly, surprised to see her standing there by the kitchen door, “I’m sorry Kim…”

“It’s fine. But I would have preferred you spent all this time with me out of love and devotion, not just because you were feeling guilty or responsible,” Kimberly said with a sad smile.

“I do love you,” Prisca quic-kly corrected.

“I’m sure you do. I will just see Mimi off.” Kimberly said before walking away.
