EPISODE 96

Happy birthday Amarachi I promise you 5 episode today, have a nice day

“Amanda?” Kathleen called softly as she dressed her up for be-d.

“Yes?” Amanda asked, looking into Kathleen’s face curiously. If people thought she looked like a half-caste, then Amanda looked like a little white girl. Kathleen thought as she admired Amanda’s beautiful face.

She had thought about having this conversation with Amanda all day, and now that it was time, she wasn’t sure how to go about asking the little girl for permission to d@t£ her father.

She cleared her throat, “Do you miss your mom?” She asked, ma-king Amanda blink at her in confusion. Was that a wrong question to ask? Kathleen wondered, feeling worried that her question might upset the kid.

Amanda’s brows knit thoughtfully, “She went to heaven after having me and I never saw her, so how can I miss her?” Amanda asked ma-king Kathleen sigh sadly.

“Oh dear!”

“Although I wish she was here, and I love her since daddy says she was very kind. You want to see her picture?” Amanda asked, and without waiting for Kathleen to respond she went into her father’s room and returned a moment later with a ph0to albu-m which she dropped on Kathleen’s l@p and then went on to sit on the be-d beside Kathleen before opening it.

The first picture on the albu-m was that of Pete and a beautiful light skinned lady, bent over with his hands around her w@!st while looking at the c@m£ra and laughing over something the person behind the c@m£ra had probably said. Kathleen’s heart skipped a beat as her eyes settled on the lady’s face which looked very much like Amanda’s, only difference being that she was light skinned while Amanda had Pete’s chocolate complexion. She looked really young and petite, but judging by her face she seemed to be in her early twenties or there about.

Amanda kept fli-pping the pages, and next it was their wedding picture, “The day they got married.” Amanda announced like Kathleen couldn’t figure it out on her own.

“She is pretty, right?” Amanda asked, looking up at Kathleen with a wi-de smile.

“Very pretty. And you look just like her.” Kathleen said, returning her smile even though she couldn’t un-derstand what was going on in her heart as she watched the pictures.

“Yes. But grandma says I have daddy’s eyes and complexion.” Amanda said.

“Yes you do, and it doesn’t make you any less beautiful.” Kathleen @ssured her before letting her fl!pthe page again.

This time they were seated at a diner and it seemed like they were out on a d@t£ and Pete was smiling at her like she was his prize, “Daddy said this was the day they found out I was in mummy’s belly.” Amanda announced happily.

Katheen couldn’t help but wonder why she was having these mixed feelings. She loved Amanda and yes she had feelings for Pete too, but seeing these pictures was kind of ma-king her feel uncomfortable in a way… Or was it jealousy she was feeling? How on earth do you jealous a dead person? She remembered one time she had listened to her colleagues at work argue about people feeling jealous of their p@rtner’s ex, and she had thought it didn’t make s-en-se, yet here she was feeling jealous of Pete’s dead wife. She wasn’t just an ex girlfriend, this was Pete’s late wife, someone he had obviously been madly in love and had shared both his life and b©dy with. She could literally see the love and devotion he had for her in his eyes. How could she ever compete with that? Why couldn’t she have fallen in love with someone who was a v!rg!nlike herself without any past relationsh!ps… Wait, what? Love? Kathleen’s heart skipped a beat as she realized what she had just thought.

Fall in love? Where had that thought come from? How could she be in love with him? Of course she wasn’t in love with Pete. Yes she had feelings for him, but love? How could it be love? They had known each other for ba-rely two weeks and she had disliked him for most of that time, so how could she have fallen in love with him un-der such a short period of time?

“…daddy said this was the day I was born.” She heard Amanda say, and looked down only to realize Amanda had been talking and fli-pping the pages all the while she was busy with her thoughts. And the last ph0to on that albu-m was that of the heavily pregnant lady standing in front of a Cinema. He had said the accident had happened after they finished seeing the movie and were on their way to eat, Kathleen recalled.

“Daddy says she was an Angel, and her mission was to bring me to him before returning to heaven. She looks like an angel, doesn’t she?” Amanda asked with a smile, ma-king tears gather in Kathleen’s eyes as she nodded. She felt like a witch for feeling the way she was feeling.

“Yes she does.”

“Are you crying?” Amanda asked in confusion when a tear dropped from Kathleen’s eyes. She didn’t un-derstand all she was feeling. She felt sorry for Pete and Amanda, and she was also feeling sorry towards Pete’s wife for being unable to control the jealousy she was feeling. Was she okay? Was she supposed to be feeling this way?

“Yes. I feel sad.” Kathleen confessed to Amanda who now looked sad as well.

Amanda dropped the ph0to albu-m on the be-d and then stood up on the be-d to embr@ce Kathleen, so that Kathleen’s head was resting on her midsection, “Don’t be sad.” She pleaded, and Kathleen also wra-pped her hands around Amanda.

As Kathleen gradually regained her composure, she couldn’t help but wonder if her step father had also felt jealous of her biological father when he started a relationsh!pwith her mother. Maybe she would confide in her mother about the way she was feeling.

She sighed as she pu-ll-ed away from Amanda who was still holding her, “Thank you.” She said as she wiped the tears from her face.

“You’re going to marry daddy, right?” Amanda asked, ma-king Kathleen’s heart miss a beat. Had she heard her right? Kathleen wondered as she looked at Amanda in confusion.

“I want you to be my mummy so you can take care of me, and give me a little brother and sister too.” Amanda said, and Kathleen’s eyes bec@m£ moist again.

“You’re a crybaby.” Amanda said when she noticed the tears in Kathleen’s eyes again, ma-king Kathleen giggle. She had no idea what she had gotten herself involved in, but she was just going to trust God and believe that all things was working together for her good.
***********

Ella leaned on Ken’s b©dy as they both sat on the couch watching a Nollywood ro-mantic comedy together, while Angela was lying down on another couch, busy with her phone while watching the movie at the same time.

“I always love it when Mercy Johnson takes on cl@ssy roles like this. Not those stupid dumebi and Caro the shoemaker roles.” Ella commented as she watched the movie.

“Yeah, I love her too.” Ken said, and watched in amusement as Ella pu-ll-ed away from his b©dy to look into his face.

“You love her too?” She asked, challenging him with her frown to repeat it.

“Yes nau. I love her too. Why?” Ken asked innocently.

“I said I love it when she plays cl@ssy roles and you said you love her too. Am I not the only woman who isn’t your family member that you are supposed to love?” She asked, tilting her head to the side and folding both hands over her brea-st.

“Oh! So you know? Am I not the only man who isn’t your family member that you’re supposed to love? How many guys have you complimented since we started watching this movie? First it was Ken Erics…”

“But at least you both have the same name nau.” Ella said defensively, ma-king Ken want to laugh out loud.

“Really? And Jim Iyke? What do I have in common with him? Or we have the same face?” Ken asked with a snort, “Ali Nuhu nkor?” He asked when she couldn’t answer the first question.

“But you didn’t say you don’t like it, did you? You didn’t say you’re jealous. Me I’m telling you I don’t like you loving any other person.” Ella said defensively.

“Shey you’re a Christian? Try and practice the golden rule in this relationsh!p. Do unto others as you want them to do unto you.” Ken suggested.

“If you don’t want to see me with any girl, let me not see you with any guy. You don’t want me to keep female friends, no male friends for you. Let’s maintain the energy on both ends, you hear?” Ken said ma-king her shift in her seat uncomfortably.

“Ehn, fine. I hear you. Sha don’t tell me you love anyb©dy again.” She said grudgingly as she returned to her former position so they could continue the movie. They both turned to the side when they heard Angela trying to control her laughter unsuccessfully, and only then did they remember they weren’t alone in the living room. They had completely forgotten she was there and had been engrossed in themselves and their argument.

“You see your aunty, abi? Try not to be like her o.” Ken advised.

“What is my business? Sha I’ve told you my own. Angela you’re here abi? You will bear me witness.” Kathleen said and Angela stood up.

“I’m not here. I’m going to the room to sleep. Goodnight uncle Ken, good night aunty.” She said with a smile as she turned to leave.

“Good girl. In fact come and take.” He said, taking out his wallet to give her a clean one thousand naira note, and she danced excitedly.

“Angela you’re not here abi? Okay na. We will see, you hear? Better keep that money he is giving you well o, you will need it throu-ghout this week.” She threatened ma-king the smile disappear from Angela’s face.

“Ahan! But aunty nau.” Angela protested.

“Don’t worry jare. You’re doing like you don’t know your aunty. She will give you money.” Ken @ssured Angela who looked at him skeptically.

“Aunty I’m here. I will bear you witness.” Angela said as she stuffed the money she had taken from Ken into the back pocket of her shorts.

“Angela you’re a criminal.” Ken accused, while Ella giggled at the hilarity of it all.

“Ehn, arrest her nau. Angela go and sleep jare. Goodnight my girl.” Ella said with a giggle as she returned her attention to the television.

“In your mind you have won abi?” Ken asked, tickling her and ma-king her laugh out loud as she tried to move away from his reach.

“Allow me finish the movie abeg.” She pleaded as she returned to her seat.

“Oya let’s finish it so that I can go.” Ken said as he placed his hand over her w@!st and held her close.

“You can sleep here if you want to.” Ella offered.

“No. I don’t want to. Thanks for the offer though.” Ken said dismissively. Last thing he wanted was to sleep over and start wanting things he had promised not to do. No need opening the pot of food he wasn’t going to be able to eat.
*********

Kimberly had never felt so restless as she did at the moment. The house she had always lived in now seemed sort of empty without Eric around. It wasn’t even up to a week since he moved in with her, yet everything seemed different alre-ady. She walked over to the kitchen to get a gl@ss of water, and she ended up missing him even more, especially as it reminded her of the k!ssthey had shared in there the other night. She knew if he was home he would probably be in the kitchen trying to fix dinner for them as he had been doing since he moved in.

She walked out of the kitchen and went outside to the boys quarter so she could distract herself by spending the time with Prisca instead. She had tried her best to distract herself by re-ading the beauty for Ashes, but she hadn’t been able to concentrate on it. How could she when he was yet to call, and his number was unreachable?

“What is wrong?” Prisca asked when Kimberly walked into the ap@rtment without knocking, wearing a long face.

“Nothing. I was just in need of your company.” Kimberly said as she dropped on the couch and faced the television.

“Why? What about Eric? Did you both fight?” Prisca asked in concern.

“He is not around. Something c@m£ up at home so he had to travel.” Kimberly said without turning to look at her.

“Is that why you look so downcast?” Prisca asked curiously.

“I’m okay.”

“No you’re not. You’re obviously in a foul mood, and your face says it all.” Prisca said, reaching for the remote control and turning off the television so she could get Kimberly’s attention.

“Talk to me. Is that why you’re feeling this way or something else happened?” Prisca insisted.

Kimberly sighed, “I don’t know. The house just feels empty without him. And he is yet to even give me a call.” Kimberly complained.

“Kim? You’re in love with him alre-ady?”

“Am I? I don’t know. But then again, I wouldn’t be too surprised if I am. He is the only man who has treated me the way he does, and he hasn’t even t©uçhed me. He defends me every chance he gets, and pampers me. He makes me feel like I’m more than a S-x object, and he is devoted to ma-king me better, so what is there not to love? Won’t you love him if you were in my shoes?” Kimberly asked defensively as a tear dropped from her eyes.

Prisca looked at her helplessly before moving closer to her to embr@ce her, “I wasn’t trying to say you did anything wrong. It’s okay.” She said as she tapped Kimberly’s back gently. She couldn’t say she was surprised about it anyway, since she had always known Kimberly was likely going to end up falling in love with Eric. Hopefully the feeling was going to be mutual.
