She just smiled then placed her hand on her face and began to pull it off. I gazed at her with my mouth wide open; her face was peeling off like a snake sheds its skin. All along, I was living with someone wearing a fake face; I could not believe my eyes.
For an year plus, she always wore a well modified mask which fitted her face perfectly well making her look completely different. I waited anxiously until she was done pilling off the high-tech-modified mask so as to see her true face and once the mask was out I almost fainted.
“Christina???!” I asked shocked to death.
“Yes dear, it’s me.” She replied smiling.
“I saw your death being announced all over news! Your own father confirmed your death and I almost went to jail for being accused of killing you! Can you please explain how comes you are still alive!” I said perplexed.
“Ham, there was something I never told you from the very beginning. The guy I used to call dad is not my biological father. When I was born, my mother was a poor single mum and she was blessed with two little girls. Due to poverty, she gave out my sister for adoption and kept it as a secret between her and the lady who adopted Christine. Two years later, she got married to the man who you met in my house before the tragedy happened, the man I used to call dad and did not tell him that there was another girl beside me for she feared that he would leave us. When I was three, my mum gave birth to another girl from my stepfather and I grew up knowing that we were the only two kids until one day I knew the truth.” Christina said then kept quiet and tears began building up in her eyes.
“When I was ten, a coincidence happened. I was in the market doing some shopping when I met with the lady who adopted my twin sister; she used to visit my mum often at our home and I knew her as mum’s best friend. She asked me what I was doing at the market alone and told me to get in her car we go home. I had no idea that she had confused me for my sister, so I got in the car thinking that we were going to my home, only to end up at her place. Immediately we got out of the car, she saw my twin sister standing at the door to the house and that was when she discovered that she had taken the wrong girl. It was too late, I had already seen my twin sister and I demanded for an explanation as to why her daughter looked exactly like me. That was when the lady called my mum and the two sat us down and explained everything to us.
The lady was a wealthy single woman who was not married so she used to live with my sister only the two of them. My sister and I demanded that we be allowed to be meeting and get to know each other better and our mums agreed but under a condition that my stepfather and my half sister were never going to know that I had a twin sister.” Christina continued narrating then forced a smile; her tears were almost falling out.
I got off from where I was seated then sat beside her and lay her head on my shoulder feeling empathy.
“Christine and I made perfect partners in crime. Since her foster mum, Maggie, knew everything, we used to hangout at her place to avoid my foster dad and foster sister knowing the truth. We kept on doing this until we both joined campus and we were so good in playing mind games. We had rented houses separately but used to exchange the houses often since we both joined the same campus. I am sure when we used to be neighbours back then you used to wonder a lot how often I used to change my clothes; that was the game we used to play and even Mwaura never realized. Out of the campus life excitement, my sister messed and got pregnant; that was when I told you that I needed to move out but I could not tell you the main reason for me moving out so I gave you the excuse of we were suffocating each other; with her pregnant, you would easily tell that we were two identical girls.” She narrated then asked me to get her a glass of water.
I rushed to the kitchen and got her water then she continued with the story; I was glued to the seat.
“She did not want her foster mum knowing that she was pregnant and did not want to get rid of the kid so for the nine months she was pregnant, we played games on our parents and she gave birth to a baby girl and nobody knew about it except us two. We went on with our house exchange game but this time round, it was all about the kid.
To avoid people knowing that we were twins, I would got to her place and stay with the kid while she had practical classes then instead of coming back to her place, she would go to my house. The biggest problem came when we found out that we were both in love with the same guy and I could not hate my twin sister over a guy neither was I ready to forsake him just because of her so we agreed to have him the both of us; after all, we used to say that it was just having fun while in campus.
Christine never told me who the father to the kid was but I knew she had slept with you a day before the day I first slept with you and I am sure you must have noted a difference on both days because for her, she was still innocent.” Christina continued then stared at me to see my reaction.
“Wait! Viola is my daughter?” I asked almost going insane.
“Calm down Ham, let me finish my story then you can be mad at me all you want… When my foster dad found you at my place, it was Christine who was there and not me but she told me how you met dad and everything which happened. She knew me so well, even dad could not suspect that she was not me.
I was with her seven months old daughter in her apartment when I got the news that a cop shot her dead and that was where everything fell apart. Everyone thought that it was me who got shot because the incident happened in my house and that’s why even my stepfather was on the necks of those cops; he too doesn’t know that it was Christine whom they buried and not me.
I did not know what to do since the wh0le world knew that there was only one Christina and it was all over news that I was dead so I secretly went to Christine’s foster mum and told her everything. To avoid a hectic life, she sacrificed to sponsor me to get these fake masks so as to hide my true identity from the world and since then, she has been secretly supporting me and your daughter.
Maggie and I agreed that even my mum could not know that it was Christina whom they buried and not me since that would lead to more trouble in the family. I came to realize that Viola was your kid when I found a dairy in Christine’s house and she had indicated that Viola was your kid but since you were not aware that the two of you had messed, she chose not to tell you.
Ham, I know you are mad at me right now because for one year now you have stayed with your daughter and I never told you that she was your kid; I did not know how to tell you dear, please forgive me. When I saw you move in as my neighbor once again, I was so excited even though you could not recognize me; the reason why I never restricted Viola from playing with you while the other parents restricted their kids was because I could see the strong bond you had towards her and I did not want to deny you a chance to be with your girl like my sister did; I am so sorry Ham.” Christina concluded as tears began falling down hear cheeks.
I took her in my arms and comforted her; I was just speechless but I could not hate her because fate had brought us back together with a plus one. All along I could see that Viola looked so much like Christina but I would not ask Lucy (Christina) for I thought that she was a different person.
After all she had gone through, Christina and I decided to move in together and try to rekindle our love. We now had a daughter to take care of together and a wh0le new world to face together; what we didn’t know, was that life had a totally different plan for us…….
Wondering how comes Lucy (Christina) had a brother (Benson) yet her mum had only three girls? Well, there is another new story which reveals everything. As I had promised, I have given both Season One and Two of the Mistaken Identity. The new story which reveals all the secrets and everything which happened goes by the tittle *CHRISTINA MY LOVE by George Haman*
