“I just can’t believe it! I just can’t believe that the beautiful marriage that i have been emphasizing about all my life was finally to someone like Gold! Of all people???”. Raymond cried out to his friends in his office that Monday afternoon .
Victor burst out into laughter. “Her name is now Gold Roland! Your surname!!!”. He nudged Solomon and they burst into laughter.
“Are you guys laughing right now? Now tell me what is funny about that! A wh0le strikingly handsome dude like me that was always crowned most handsome student in his school a his school days finally marries a thin unattractive woman”. He exclaimed.
Solomon bit his lower lip thoughtfully. “But, come to think of it, that girl was every guy’s crush in school because she was always getting awards! If not that our school authority was not the generous type of school system, she would definitely have been given scholarsh¡p”.
“Why didn’t pa Brian choose Matilda for you?”. Victor asked with a surprised glint in his eyes.
Raymond gasped at him. “Why are you guys talking like drunkards this afternoon? Matilda will forever remain just a friend to us. It is even worse to accept someone that I regard as a friend as my wife than accepting an enemy as a wife”.
Victor stifled laughter. “Are you insinuating that Gold is your enemy?”.
“Gold is a low life that I want to get rid of in my life”. He took off his wedding ring and flung it into the wastebin.
Solomon looked mischievously at him. “If grandpa catch you, just begin to say your last prayer”
Raymond reluctantly took the ring that he had abandoned in the waste bin and wore it on his finger.
His two friends laughed at him.
The head maid, maid Candelaria showed me around the mansion.
Matilda appeared before us and smiled sheepishly at Candelaria . “I can take her from here since I am very knowledgeable about the nook and crannies of the Rolands mansion”.
Maid Candelaria smiled and walked away, leaving us together.
I was already warming up for the idiot.
She smiled devilishly at me. “Whoa! The once slave of the Rolands have now become the queen!!!”. She clapped mockingly.
I k-ssed the ring on my finger. “You sound like it is so easy to get into my position. If it was, wouldn’t you have even given your life for it? Stop trying to console yourself, Matilda”.
“Raymond is so disgusted by this marriage”.
“…at least, I am not friend zoned and eating up myself. You are the one in love. As for me, I have nothing to loose”.
There was a sarcastic look in her eyes as she looked at me. “You think you can survive by just being a rich married woman?”.
“Yes,my dear. It starts from there. Oops! My spoilt brat husband will soon be back and I have not even checked out what the maids will be preparing for him”.
“What are we going to do now?”.
I stopped and looked at her. “What do you mean?”.
“Anna and Tyler suggested that the young people in the house should swim together. They are waiting for us right now”. She held my hand and pulled me towards the pool side where the two spoilt brats and Raymond’s cousin’s wife were waiting.
Matilda began to take off her clothes. “Aren’t you going to take off your clothes and join the swim ride?”.
Matilda knew that I couldn’t swim.
She had purposely convinced Anna and Tyler to make me participate in the swimming fun.
I summoned courage and cleared my throat. “I don’t how to swim”.
Anna rolled her eyes. “Who doesn’t know how to swim these days?”.
Matilda burst into laughter. “Gold used to be my very good friend those days and one of the things that I will never forget about her was that she taught me how to swim”. She lied boldly.
I gasped at her. “What sort of lie is that?”
“Are you shy, Gold?”. Charity, the wife of Raymond’s cousin asked me.
“I am really serious!”. I tried to convince them.
Before I knew it, Anna and Tyler jumped into the river and began to swim like fishes.
Matilda pushed me from behind and before I knew it, I was in,side the pool.
Sinking.
I was trying to help myself out but I just couldn’t.
I was sinking in.
But suddenly, I felt a strong arm around me.
I was lifted up from the water by the strong hand and placed on the floor.
They surrounded us and when I looked up to find out the hand that had lifted me out of the river, it was Raymond Roland.
He was still on work wears and it was dripping of water.
I was shocked.
Raymond had jumped into the pool and helped me out?
How did he know that I didn’t know how to swim?
Charity rushed to Matilda and slapped her. “Why did you lie to us that Gold could swim?”.
Matilda sobbed. “I was only joking! You didn’t have to just slap me when you knew that I was only joking!”.
“I saw you push her into the pool!”. Charity accused again.
“She jumped in herself I swear!”. Matilda cried out.
I sat up and met Matilda’s eyes. “Are you listening to yourself at all? Can someone that cannot swim jump into the pool?”.
Raymond rolled his eyes and walked into the house.
Anna rolled her eyes. “If I were the one, I would also have pushed her! The fun of her struggling in the pool and looking for dolphins to help her out!”. She nudged Tyler and they burst into laughter.
I walked into the room that I was sharing with Raymond in my dripping gown and walked into the bathroom to change.
When I returned to the bedroom, he had also changed but he was shivering. I wrapped a blanket around him. “Thank you for saving me today”.
He ignored me.
“I will get you white soup because of the cold”. I turned towards the door.
He cleared his throat. “I only saved you because that was what grandfather would have wanted me to do since you are my wife on papers, so I wouldn’t want any unnecessary gratitude from you”.
I walked out of the room and i noticed the illegitimate son of Zac Roland, Collins Roland sneaking out of Zac Roland’s study room.
He was holding a book.
A 1988 recipe book.
Why was he stealing a 1988 recipe book from Zac Roland’s study room?
I had to find out what a 1988 recipe book contained because he was looking so suspicious.
I rushed to get the already prepared white soup from the maids and took it to Raymond in our room.
I watched him take eat a few spoonfuls before I poured out the question on my mind to him. “Ray, do you have any idea about what a 1988 recipe book contain?”.
He nodded. “The day my mum tried that recipe on a food she had made for me, I was hospitalized for two months after eating the food. It is the only type of recipe that, despite the fact that Ghana pepper is filled in the food, you can never smell or see it but it is there. Very tricky recipe. It hides Ghana pepper in meals”. He looked up at me. “Why did you ask about it?”.
I shrugged and sat on the bed. “Er…just saw it somewhere, that’s all”. I watched Raymond. Being the blockhead that he was, he was going to throw tantrum if I told him that I just saw his step brother sneaking out of his father’s study room with the 1988 recipe book so I remained patient until he fell asleep on his small bed that same night.
I sneaked out of our room.
I walked to the room of Collins Roland and opened the door slightly.
I had to find out what he wanted to use a book that contained Raymond’s allergies to do.
He was on a call when I opened the door.
He was so locked up in his phone conversation that he didn’t even notice when i opened the door slightly.
“You will hide the recipe among the foods he is going to taste for Bower bound restaurant launching which will take place next week. Tell them that it is another type of recipe…you can say, avocados spirals but make sure you use that recipe. I need to do something important for those two months”. He said to the caller.
I remembered that Raymond had told me that he had stayed at the hospital for two months so it was just not coincidental, it was true.
Collins wanted to hurt Raymond.
My heart slipped immediately I heard footsteps from behind..
I turned.
It was Mrs Jane Roland.
Raymond’s mother.
She gasped at me. “Pervert! You are peeping at your step brother in law as he is undressing despite the fact that you are a married woman!”.
When I looked up, the full family had gathered around us..
