Undying love 💗💗💗💗💗💗

Chapter seventeen

Francis ‘s pov

I sat beside Jerry and Ahmed

” and the first runner up is……….. Jerry Williams ”
I bump shoulders with Jerry
Somebody that wrote a debate of ten pages, how will he not be the first runner up
” good job bro”
Jerry walked up to the stage

I rub my palms together in anticipation

” the second runner up is………… Donald Stevenson ”

I watch him stand up cooly and mounted the stage

” the third runner up is…….. Francis Nelson ”

Praise the Lord!
” well done bro”
Ahmed patted my back

” the fourth runner up is………. Bamidele Badmus ”

I watch one Olodo boy in my class walk up to the stage,
Nothing wey person eyes no go see for Princeton!

I’m sure he won’t be able to defend his debate.

” the fifth runner up is……… Ikenna Onyeka”

I was praying frantically in my mind
Please let Ahmed qualify

” the sixth runner up is…….. Musa Yusuf ”

” the seventh runner up is……… Abubakar Yusuf ”

Musa and Abubakar are twins
I’m amazed that both of them qualified

” the eighth runner up is…….. Tope Akindele ”
I watch Bukky’s boyfriend walk up to the stage
Ahmed had a disheartened expression on his face

” the ninth runner up is……….. Emmanuel Bello ”

One boy with bighead walked to the stage

” the tenth runner up is…….. Ahmed Ojelabi ”

Thank God
Ahmed was grinning from ear to ear as he walked up the stage
I have never seen him so happy
So sure of himself

” the eleventh runner up is…… Paul Damilare”

I didn’t even listen to the names again

Mr Smith continued

” due to the extraordinary performances of some of you today, the committee members have decided to execute a change in the plans, the debate will no longer be defended on Wednesday, it will be defended right here and right now ”

Most people’s face w¡dened in horror!
This is not what we bargained for!

” Miss Amanda Smith, can you please rise up on your feet and defend your essay ”

Ngozi’s pov

I watch Amanda rise up with shaky feet

She coughed a few times
Gone was the self assured smile she had on her face earlier

” um good day em Mr chairman, accurate time keeper and my fellow students, I am here to oppose the topic of the debate which says em which says HOMEWORK SHOULD BE BANNED IN SCHOOLS.

I oppose the motion because homework is an important aspect of education
There are a lot of things that can’t be covered in school, homework em homework actually extends study beyond school hours, it helps students get a w¡der and deeper em knowledge em understanding.

Homework also helps students develop good study skills, the reason I’m saying this is because homework allows students to fix in their heads in work they have done in school, if they do homework em I mean doing homework em doing tasks linked to recent lessons helps students strengthen their understanding and become more confident in using new knowledge and skills and………

Shoo petrol Don finish!
Amanda continued to stare like a head of fish
When her silence was getting too long
She cleared her throat

” I believe that with these few points of mine, I have been able to convince and not confuse you that
HOMEWORK SHOULD NOT BE BANNED IN SCHOOLS
thank you ”

To me her performance was a very bad one but I saw Mr Smith murmuring something in the judges ears
” that was an amazing performance by Amanda Smith, please give her a round of applause ”

Amazing ke!
I trust Princeton students, the applause sef didn’t sound well

” let’s welcome the next candidate Ngozi Adams to defend her debate”
I stood up with a smile
It is time to stun the judges!
They will beg me to leave this stage!!

” good morning honourable adjudicators, members of the opposing team, chairlady and audience, I Ngozi Adams hereby support the topic of the debate which says HOMEWORK SHOULD BE BANNED IN SCHOOLS

Before I proceed, I would like to explain the meaning of homework, homework is a school work that are given at school to do at home

Let’s ask ourselves, if homework is a schoolwork, why should it be given to do at home

To me, homework makes no sense, it does more harm than good,

Homework are almost done when a child is already tired from a long day at school, it is almost done in a rush giving students no Time to utilise their potentials to the fullest.

Setting homework does little to develop good study skills, it is hærd to check whether the homework students produce is actually their own
Some students have always copied off others or got their parents to help them, it would be better to have a mixture of activities in the classroom which helps students to develop a wh0le new range of skills, including independent learning.

Homework puts students off learning, research has shown that many children find doing homework very stressful and tiring, some students learn better in an intEr×¢tive environment, such students end up being punished for bad scores in their homework, after years of bad homework experiences, it is no wonder that many children come to dislike education and switch off or drop out of school early.

In a psychological point of view
Homework takes a lot of time, being young is not just about doing school work, it should also be about being physically active, exploring the environment through play ….

I flash the judges a smile
Gesticulating expertly with my hands and feet

” doing creative things like music and art, it is also important for young people to build bonds with their families and friends, but home work often squeezes the time available for…..

” that’s brilliant!!!! ”
All the judges stood up and clapped for me
The students followed suit
The applause was thunderous!

I walked back to my seat with glee

” let’s welcome the third candidate, Miss Kate Oladipupo ”

Kate walked up to stage
One thing I’ve always admired is Katie’s confidence and outspokenness

” good morning respected judges and members of the house, today I Kate Oladipupo stand before you to speak on the topic HOMEWORK SHOULD BE BANNED IN SCHOOLS
And I strictly oppose this motion
To me, homework is the best way to test a student’s level of understanding over a particular subject , and I believe that with the few things I have to say today, you’ll have to agree with me

Homework is a vital and valuable part of education, there are only a few hours in each school day, not enough time to cover all the subjects needed to be studied

Setting homework extends study beyond school hours, allowing a w¡der and deeper education

Tasks such as reading, writing essays, researching, doing maths problem are best done at home, away from the distraction of other students. …..

By the time Kate was through with her speech
Everyone was clapping wildly
She had made a terrific performance.

” let’s welcome the next candidate, Abimbola Michaels”
Abimbola walked up to the stage, she also made an impressive performance
After her was Boluwatife Okikiola
And she did well too
Bukky’s performance too wasn’t bad

Some performed poorly
It was obvious that they didn’t write their debate by themselves

Jerry’s pov
I always have stage fright
Some people say I’m shy
Others say I’m nerdy
I hear the principal call out my name

” let’s welcome the first candidate, Jerry Williams ”

I was terrified to even stand up
Then I remember Katie
She had been so brave
She looked at me beseechingly
And I feel myself gaining courage from her look of adoration
Don’t look at her again!
She’s too bewitching
Remember how she made you promise to pay her school fees

I walked up to the stage
I was filled with a new sense of courage
I took the microphone and began my speech

I don’t even know if I did well or not
Because by the time I was through
People were dazed to even clap
Katie stood up and clapped
And everyone else did the same

Hmm interesting
” let’s welcome the next candidate, Donald Stevenson ”

Donald’s performance was a captivating one
It was like he had everyone under a spell
The next was Francis
And for a nerd like me to say he did well
That means he did amazingly well

Bamidele’s speech was horrible
Ikenna’s own was still okay
The two Hausa boys were at a disadvantage because of their accent

To cut the long story short
At the end of everything
I still retained my position as the first runner up

One of the judges stood up
” in all the performances I’ve seen today, there is one performance that really mesmerized me and it’s the performance of Miss Ngozi Adams, she was the only one that was brave enough to support the motion, I really commend you miss Ngozi, and I wish you best of luck in the other competitions to come ”

The first runner up is…. Ngozi Adams
Second runner up is…… Kate oladipupo
Third runner up is…….. Abimbola Michaels
Fourth runner up is……. Tina Olayiwola
Fifth runner up……… Olubukola oyedeji
/ / / / / / /

The twentieth runner up is….. Amanda Smith

Amanda did poorly
She didn’t deserve to qualify

Francis came out as third runner up
Donald was second
Ahmed was eighth
Tope was tenth

” the mr/miss culture competition will take place the day after tomorrow, get ready, get your colorful clothes, celebrate your culture, inspire us with your traditions, once again thank you everybody, you were all amazing ”

Undying love
Chapter eighteen

Ngozi’s pov

If there’s one thing that the mr/miss debate competition taught me, it’s that the most important thing is not being the first runner up, it is much more important to be able to defend yourself anywhere and anytime.

I look at Amanda’s sulky face, she started out as the first runner up and ended up as the twentieth runner up.
She didn’t even deserve any position
If I were the judges, I would have her disqualified immediately.

We were all congratulating each other, I jumped on Donald’s back, he turned around and put his arms around my wa-ist, I had been so proud of him, his performance was amazing, I really hope he wins this competition, no I really hope Cisco wins, I don’t even know what I’m feeling, I felt like my wishes were a betrayal to my boyfriend and best friend.

” Ngozi, you were amazing up there, you blew the judges minds ”
” thanks, you were fabulous ”

I went to meet Katie and Bukky
” and the first runner up is……. Ngozi Adams!!! ”
Bukky said teasingly
” girls, don’t you think we should celebrate! ”
” we’ll definitely do, but at the end of the competitions”
” but what are we supposed to do for culture ”
Kate asked
” I’m sure we all heard what the judges said, but the truth is I’m just as confused as you are ”

Kate’s pov
I was walking along the courtyard with Bukky and Ngozi when the principal called me
” miss Kate, can I have a word with you in my office ”
” yeah sure sir ”
My heart was already beating fast
What did he want to tell me
I followed him to the office
” Miss Kate, are you aware that a particular student of this school with the name Jerry Williams paid up your school fees this morning? ”
” no sir em I mean yes sir, I mean ”
” I would like to ask you a question and I would like it if you answer me honestly ”
” yes sir, go ahead sir”
” what’s your relationsh¡p with Jerry ”
I don’t even know what I’m going to say!
Mr Smith unflinching eyes stared at me,
” um the thing is that em actually Jerry is my friend ”
” friend indeed!, in Princeton college we do not tolerate immoral and indecent act, you shouldn’t use such dirty ways to pay up your schoolfees irrespective of your family background ”
Wait! What’s this man insinuating!
Is he thinking that I slept with Jerry to get the money!
I feel insulted
” with all due respect sir, I would appreciate it if you didn’t insult me directly or indirectly, I didn’t do anything dirty to get this money, it was out of his own free will ”
His brows raised up
” free will indeed! ”
I wanted to say we had a deal but he will only twist it to mean something else
” is there any other thing you have to say to me, Mr Smith? ”
I say in a sweet sugary voice
” I would advise you to be careful, very very careful or else you just might end up being blacklisted from the Princeton king and queen competitions ”

I didn’t know when I opened my mouth in shock
” but sir.. ”
” you’re a smart girl Kate, there’s a way I could actually make you win, it’s just a matter of using what you have to get what you want ”
Oh no!
Hope it’s not what I’m thinking!

One look at his lusty eyes roaming over my body further confirmed my fears

” remember that twenty million naira isn’t a small amount of money, just think about that ”
I feel like slapping him
I just walked out of his office in anger
Oh Lord! Why do I keep attracting unwanted advances like this!

I can’t help but have the feeling that if I don’t sleep with Mr Smith, he could actually eliminate me from the competitions.
Damn you Jerry!
Why couldn’t you give me the money so I could pay it myself.

Ngozi took a look at my face and guessed that something was wrong
” Katie, what’s the matter, why the long face ”
I brush her off
” it’s nothing, everything is fine ”

I was going to the library to cool my head when I bump into Jerry, his spectacles fell on the floor and I help him to pick them up, I stare at his face, without
his spectacles he looks different, more handsome, more…
I snapped out of it!
I don’t fall for nerdy guys !
” here”
He took the spectacles from my hands
” um Kate, I have been wanting to um the thing is that um tomorrow is my parents twenty years anniversary and um I thought um I think if you like you could come ”
” believe me Jerry that’s the worst invitation I have ever heard of, but Jerry why did you pay my schoolfees directly to the principal ”
” but we had a deal? ”
I shook my head in frustration
” I would have liked it if you had given me the money to pay by myself!!!!!!! ”
I scre-med at him
I didn’t know when the tears started rolling down my face
Jerry shrugged and handed me a handkerchief
” you shouldn’t cry like this, people are actually starting at us”

Mtcheeew
” Jerry do you know that you’re the most unrom-ntic person I’ve ever met ”
He shrugged again
” thanks, people say that all the time, so are you coming to my house or not ”
” of course not, I’ll be busy preparing for culture ”
” I think coming to my house is just what you need to do ”
I kept staring at him till he was out of view
What did he mean by that?

Tife’s pov
The first thing Amanda did as we entered the house was to give me a slap
” you’re a bitch Tife, how dare you compete with me! ”
I flinch and hold my cheeks in pain
” but Mandy, the rules was thaaaat everyone should compete”
Another slap followed
” how dare you question my authority, let me give you a warning, if you participate in the next competitions, I will screw you!!! ”
One look at Amanda’s furious face made me know she wasn’t kidding
But what am I going to do!
Winning that competition is the only way I can be free from Amanda’s cruelty
” I’m going shopping, your can die at home if you want to ”
I stared at her until she left the house
I change my clothes and head out of the house
I also have shopping to do!

Ngozi’s pov

I and Chioma and Kate got to our house, my mom was beaming with smiles, it was obvious that she is in a happy mood

” congratulations my girls, you did wonderfully well, I prepared your favorite, I’m so
excited! ”

” mum, how did you know! ”

” the principal sent me a list of the twenty people that qualified, and encouraged me to support you ”

” mummy you need to see the way sister Ngozi and sister Kate performed, it was so good ”
Chioma said with awe

” shut up! Were you there ”

” but my friend’s sister told my friend and my friend told me”

I return with two plates of fried rice and chicken
” but mom, you said its my favorite ”
I pouted
” Kate hope you like it ”
” yes ma, I love it very much ”
” so you cannot ask me if I like it Abi ”
” if you like like it, if you like don’t like it ”
“mummy me?, Ngozi? Ada ?”
” Kate my dear, would you like orange juice or apple juice ”
” I would like orange juice MA ”
My mom went into the kitchen and returned with a glass of juice for Kate
I clap my hands
” nice one! So that’s how you want to be doing in this house abi ”
Ever since Kate came to the house, my mom has been fussing over her, sometimes I couldn’t help feeling jealous but I quickly remember that Kate had been through much more than me.

” but mom, what attire am I going to wear for culture? ”
My mom returned with a pile of traditional attires, you can choose one from these
I can’t even decide on what to choose!
” mummy, what about Katie? ”
“That’s true!”
” Ngozi, Jerry said something about his parents anniversary tomorrow and he somehow insinuated that I need to come ”
I couldn’t help laughing
Kate had a confused on her face
” Ngozi what’s funny ”
” nothing, you should really go to Jerry’s house ”
I whispered something into my mom’s ears
And we wink at each other
One thing I like the most about my mom is that we are partners in crime
She nodded her head
” yes, Kate, you must definitely go to Jerry’s house, youre lucky to be invited, I will make enquiries and look for your traditional attire ”
” okay MA, thank you ma, God bless you ma”

Bukky’s pov

I got home and went straight to my room
I don’t even bother saying anything to my parents about qualifying in the mr/miss debate competition
I was about to shut the door when my mom walked in
” wow, Bukky you finally did something that’s worth commending today, I almost didn’t believe it when I saw the message or are there two Olubukola Oyedeji in your school? ”
“no, what message are you talking about ”
” the one that said you’re part of the twenty qualifiers for the competition, I didn’t think you would actually be selected at all! ”
I didn’t know if that was an insult or a compliment
” seriously mom!, why do you like thinking less of me “because you’re nothing but an average student, you’re never done anything worthy of appraisal ”
Her words hurt
But it’s true
” parents are meant to support and encourage their children”
” of course I encourage Timi and Tayo because they actually do something worthy of encouragement ”
She was doing it again
Always comparing me with Timi and Tayo
” but mummy what if I actually win this competition ”
” then I will finally acknowledge you in this house, have you prepared a dress for culture ”
” no ma, ”
” I’ll see what I can do about that ”

Kate’s pov

As I switch off the lights and lie down in bed, I couldn’t sleep, I kept having nightmares
I kept seeing Mr Smith’s face looming above me menacingly
I gripped the sheets tightly and sweat broke out on my forehead
” sister Kate, you’re not allowing me to sleep, what’s the matter ”
” Chi Chi I’m sorry, I promise I won’t disturb you again ”
” you have to sing for me before I sleep again ”
Sing ke!
” yes, my teacher said its a lullaby ”
I began to sing

Soft kitty warm kitty little ball of fur. 🎶

Happy kitty sleepy kitty 🎶

Purr purr purr🎶

As I sang the song with a tender voice, I started yawning loudly, as I close my eyes, I drifted off to sleep, I don’t even know who needed the song between I and chioma, I also couldn’t figure out what
Ngozi and her mom are up to by telling me to go to Jerry’s house.
