Undying Love

Undying Love episode 21

Undying love 🤔
Chapter twenty one

Kate’s pov

” and now miss Feranmi, please mention twenty of the wise sayings you know in Yoruba language ” the judge said
I hear the wh0le school gasp for me even before I gasped
Mr Smith grinned evilly
I feel floored
I had spent the wh0le night studying about ancient history, I read the history all the way from Oduduwa to Oranmiyan and all the ancestral gods
And now I know I can’t possibly answer this question
It’s just too difficult
” I um I wwould lllike to skip”
” are you aware of the fact that you can only skip the question once and you’ll lose point if you do? ”
” yyyyes ssir”
” okay Miss feranmi, please give us a song that best describes the behavior of your people ”
What!
I started thinking really hærd
I’m not good at answering random questions
I don’t really know much about my culture
Not to talk about knowing songs
Mr Smith had a self assured smile on his face and I feel an intense urge to slap him
I could feel everyone looking at me beseechingly
Ngozi had her palms together in some sort of prayer
” you’re wasting my time Miss feranmi ”
Mr Smith sneered
I didn’t even listen to him
I continued thinking
And I had an idea!
But can I actually sing this song
” I’m sorry your time is up Miss….

Ise y a a a
Ise y a a a

And the voice of a hundred students rose with mine
Everyone knows this song in Princeton
It’s ogun state anthem

Omo ogun Ise yaa

Eledumare Ise ma yaa o

Ise yaa

Eyin omo ogun e se giri

Ise po fun wa lati se
/ / / / /

Ise yaa omo ogun Ise yaa

A thunderous erupted from the students by the time I was, no by the time we finished singing the song

Mr Smith had a look of bewilderment on his face

” I believe that with that song, you can know that my people are honest, God-fearing and hærdworking people ”
” you did well Miss feranmi, I just hope you win because you lost a lot of points by skipping the question ” one of the judges said

I went back to my seat with mixed feelings

” the next candidate, Miss Abimbola Micheals should come over to the stage ”

Abimbola walked over to the stage, she was dressed in a white iro and buba complete with orange headtie, wa-ist tie and red beads

” can you please tell us the meaning of your name ”
” the Ola in my name means riches so Abimbola means a child that brings riches into a family ”

” that’s correct, so Miss Abimbola what’s the number of vowels we have in the Yoruba language ”

See cheating oh,!
I shook my head at the sheer injustice of it all
And yet they said it is free and fair

” they are seven vowels in the Yoruba language ”
” very good Miss Abimbola”

” let’s welcome the next candidate, Miss Tina Olayiwola ”
I watch one cute girl rise up to the stage
She was dressed in a beautiful Yoruba attire
She even carried a bridal fan
” what’s your traditional name Tina ”
” it’s um oluwaperosayemi”
” and what does it mean ”
” it means um it means um…

That’s how Tina began to stammer
And na so she Waka jeje comot for stage

” the next candidate, Miss Olubukola oyedeji ”
Bukky’s attire ehn is so beautiful, I’m sure it must be from Aso -ebi bella
” your attire is amazing miss Olubukola, can you please tell us what your name means ”
” thanks sir, Olubukola is short for oluwabukola and it means God has added to my wealth ”
” Miss Bukky, can you please tell us what ‘Ewi’ means ”
Bukky actually had the nerve to look startled
But I know she knows what it means
” ewi means poetry ‘
” that’s correct miss Olubukola ‘

” let’s welcome our next candidate, Miss Boluwatife Okikiola ‘
A long silence followed
Where is Tife!

“.Boluwatife Okikiola! ”

Then I saw Amanda stand up and I open my mouth in awe
Amanda was dripping with gold!
She wore a nicely decorated abaya (wrappers) and a matching blouse, head tie and shawl, she had gold bracelets from her wrists to her elbows
She also wore gold bracelets on her feet, neck and ears
She looked very regal
Just like a beautiful Hausa queen

” I’m very sorry for not informing you earlier, Tife sends her sincerest apologies, she would not be able to come because of a family emergency ….

” I’m sure your apologies won’t be necessary, I’m here already ”
I watch Amanda give Tife a scornful look
I wonder whats the problem with those two!

Tife walked to the stage
She was dressed in pure white iro and buba, with white beads on her neck and feet, her shukwu hairstyle was decorated with cowrie shells

” what a unique dressing Miss Boluwatife ”
” thanks sir”
” can you please tell us what Boluwatife means ”
” Boluwatife means the will of God ”
” Miss Boluwatife, I can see that you’re dressed in a typical osun way, can you please tell us about osun ”

” osun is one of the river goddesses in Yoruba land, she is noted for being able to provide for her people and she was one of the wife of Sango (the god of thunder) …..

” that’s awesome Miss Boluwatife ”
I watch Tife go back to her seat with a worried look on her face.

” the next candidate, Miss Halimah Dauda”
I watch one pretty girl walk Fulani girl walk over to the stage
Halimah also answered her question without skipping
And my heart skipped a beat
The next candidate couldn’t even explain the meaning of her name
Every time I look at Mr Smith, he would smirk and that evil smirk sent shivers down my spine

” and the last but not the least contestant, Miss Amanda Smith”
Amanda walked to the stage with a royal grace

” of all the dressings we’ve been seeing today, yours is most beautiful ”
” thanks so much sir ”
” what’s your traditional name Amanda and it’s meaning ”
” it’s Jamilah and it means beautiful ”
” indeed you are an epitome of beauty, Miss Jamilah,
What’s your best traditional food ”
” um it’s Tuwo Shinkafa”
” can you please tell us the major things used in preparing it ”
” um em they are em, I would like to skip sir ”
Mr Smith muttered something to the judges ears and he nodded in agreement
” okay Miss Jamilah, please read one to ten in Hausa language ”
That was when I knew how disgusting Mr Smith actually is
” daya
Biku
Uku
Hudu
Biyar
Shidda
Bakwai
Takwas
Tara
Goma ”
Mtcheeew
Something that a primary student that takes Hausa lessons in Princeton can recite
” that’s good miss Jamilah”

” and now the boys section, let’s welcome the first candidate, Jerry Williams
I watch Jerry walk up the stage with his eye-catching isiagu, red cap, red beads and walking stick

” as we have said earlier, culture is not just about dressing like your people, it’s about knowing the history, ways, language of your people., what’s your traditional name Jerry ”

” it’s um chukwubuike ”
” what does it mean ”
” it means God is my strength ”
” bravo! Chukwubuike I’m sure those beads around your neck aren’t just for fashion ”
” um yes sir ”
” so can you please tell us the significance of those red beads ”
I watch Jerry’s face morph into a frown
I really hope Jerry answers the question
” you’re wasting our time chukwubuike ”
” um the red color symbolizes the pain and suffering that our people went through for our country to progress, the red beads are worn by chiefs and royal families, the beads are made of coral and is believed to have special powers to protect from any curse”
” very well answered chukwubuike ”

” the next candidate, Donald Stevenson ”
I watch Donald walk to the stage
I’ve started hating him after what Francis told me about him, I can’t believe how devious he is, a murderer for that matter!

” what’s your traditional name Donald ”
” Gaddo it means inheritor ”
” Gaddo, your question is very simple, it’s just a test on how well you understand the language of your people, you see there’s a very popular Hausa song that has been causing a lot of controversies in churches today and I would like it if you could complete that song for us, the song goes thus

Yaayi o
Yaayi yaayi yesu yaayi
Yaayi o

” and that’s where the confusion starts, so Gaddo can you please sing the correct version of the song ”

I watch Donald as he became deep in thought like he was trying to remember something
I actually hope he fails
I can’t believe I actually encouraged my friend to date someone like him

” the correct version of the song is

Yaayi o
Yaayi yaayi yesu yaayi
Yaayi o
Abun da mutum beyi ba
Yesu yaayi

A thunderous round of applause followed
I know I will still forget how he sang that song, I prefer singing the remix

” our next candidate, Francis Nelson ”
I watch Francis walk out with his attention commanding white agbada, he folded the left side in a kind of swagger
I give him a thumbs up sign and he winked at me

” I love your swagger, Mr Nelson, what’s your traditional name ”
” thanks sir, it’s Adeojo ”
” Hmmm! Ojo, what’s the meaning of Adeojo ”
” ade in Yoruba land symbolizes a crown and it is a name given to members of the royal family, ojo is a name given to a child whose delivery was very very difficult, so from my explanation I’m sure we can all conclude what Adeojo means ”

” interesting! Hmm Ojo!, your question is very simple, it’s just a test on how much you know about your name, so can you tell us the oriki (eulogy) of your name
Francis just smiled
” Adeojo mi
Omo awon loba loba
Ojo abaladiye Saba Lori Eyin re
Ojo pon kuku
Ojo pon keke
Ojo osi nile
Omo adiye dagba
Iba se pe ojo wa Nile
Ibati fiyaee data ……

We all applauded him
I didn’t really pay attention to the rest of the candidates
I was busy thinking about my fate

the judges discussed among themselves for like ten minutes.

” the judges and I have come to a conclusion, no matter how hærd most of you tried, only fifteen of you will commence to the next competition, once you hear your name just know that you’re selected ”

My heart started beating fast
I was overcome with trepidation

” the fifteen qualifiers in the girls competition are

Ngozi Adams
Abimbola michaeals
Olubukola oyedeji
Boluwatife Okikiola
Halimah Dauda
Amaka Anthony
Ijeoma Okoro

I gasped in shock and I feel the tears trickling down my face even before I know it
Ngozi and Bukky were at my side like flash
” Ngozi is it faaair ”
” no Katie, it isn’t fair, you did better than Amanda, you did better than every single one of us, can you please tell us what’s going on Katie, something is wrong somewhere ”
” the principal asked me to sleep with him ”
” what! That nauseating pig, that foolish and senseless man ” Bukky exclaimed
” I can’t believe that man is shameless enough to do this, even the thought of it makes me sick, but Katie you should have told me, we could have dealt with him ”
I’ve never seen Ngozi looking so angry
” I’m sorry girls, I can’t win against him, I don’t have a strong family backing ”
” who told you that, we’re your family, and besides you have a very influential mother in law ”
I became confused
” what are you talking about ”
” I mean Jerry’s mom”
Mtcheeew
” I’m not even dating Jerry”
Ngozi was sizzling with rage
” just leave everything with me, I’ll deal with that pig”
” I’m afraid it’s too late, I didn’t qualify…… ”
Bukky pulled me into a hug
” we’re here for you sweetheart ”
” the fact that you didn’t qualify is the more reason why we would deal with him”

” the fifteen qualifiers in the boys section are ”

Jerry Williams
Donald Stevenson
Francis Nelson
Tope Akindele
Abubakar Yusuf
Musa Yusuf
Amos Tunde
Ahmed Ojelabi
Obinna Onyekachi

Amanda’s pov
I would screw Tife and I mean it
I went to meet my dad on the stage
” dad, there’s an emergency, I need to talk to you right now ”
It was obvious that he was in some sort of discussion with the judges
I pouted
” uhuh daddy ”
” OK, I am coming ”

We went to his office and we sat down
” daddy I want you to expell Tife ”
” wait!, what! Why!, I can’t possibly do that, everyone knows that Tife is my goddaughter, besides she couldn’t have done anything to warrant that ”
I began to shed crocodile tears
I know that daddy would do anything to stop me from crying
I’m his only child
The pride of his eyes
His Jamilah
” daddy, Tife has changed, daddy Tife tortures me, she beats me anyhow just because she is stronger than me, daddy please you have to expell her before I lose my sanity ”

I could see the rage in his eyes
” you mean that same gentle Tife has changed so much ”
” yes daddy ”
My dad became deep in thought
” hmm I have to have a very good reason before I can do that ”
” don’t worry about that dad, I have this ”
I show my dad a video of I and Tife making out, I had blurred my own face out
” oh my God! I can’t believe this is what you girls actually do”
I began to hiccup and cry
” no daddy I swear it is Tife that forced me, Tife is a bad influence please expell her”
I saw the determined look on my dads face and I know he is going to do as I said

” daddy please can you tell me where tomorrow’s sport is going to take place ”
” why do you ask ”
” um I want to train a little ”
” it’s field 2A, please don’t scatter anything there, everything has been arranged ”
” sure daddy ”

I head to team 2A and I saw that each contestants s₱0t has already been marked
Perfect !
I’ll just keep a little gift for Ngozi
One by one, I will eliminate my adversaries!

Ngozi’s pov

” Ngozi there is more, Donald is a murderer, please stay away from him”

I feel a chill run down my spine
Could it be true!

” are you really sure of what you’re saying ”
” of course I am sure, please stay away from him, for your sake, for my sake and for the sake of everyone that loves you ”

” If what you’re saying is true, I promise I won’t go anywhere alone with him but I can’t break up with him just like that ”
“you promise ”
” yeah I promise ”

Francisco came to meet us
” I’m really sorry about what happened Kate ”
” its um….
” I got this for you zee, the guys and I made this but you were also part of the team and I….

I took the bag from him
I opened it and saw the most beautiful vest I’ve ever seen
Its color blue and it had ‘Zee’ inscribed on it with gold

” wow it’s beautiful ”
” I’m glad you like it ”

” attention everyone!”
The hall became as silent as a grave yard, even Kate wiped her eyes and listened
” Princeton college is a very prestigious school as we all know, and we do not accommodate immoral students in Princeton, if a bad tooth is not quickly pulled out, it will affect the teeth, which is why Miss Boluwatife Okikiola will be expelled from the school today on the basis of l-sbianism before she corrupts everyone else most especially my daughter, Miss Tife, please pick up your bag and leave, you’re no longer welcome in Princeton college ”

Haaaaaaaaaa!
The wh0le school scre-med in unison
I can’t believe that this man is so heartless
It’s true that l-sbianism is a grave offence in Princeton but Tife is his goddaughter for crying out loud!

” congratulations, Miss Kate, you can now consider yourself among the fifteen qualifiers ”

I don’t know if I should be happy for Kate or sad for Tife
Donald came to meet me
” congratulations girlfriend, shit happens in school ”
I just opened my mouth in shock
I haven’t really gotten over the shock of what just happened
Donald walked away before I saw that he actually left me a parcel
Someone yelled from the back
” oh my God! Tife has fainted”
