Chapter twenty two
Tife’s pov
I felt numb
Even as cold water was being poured all over me
I had wagered all my life on the competition and I lost terribly
” senior Tife, are you okay, can you hear me, can you stand up”
It felt like they weren’t even talking to me
I stood up and dusted my clothes
I began walking home
” senior Tife are you sure you can go home on your own, are you sure you won’t take bike ”
I didn’t listen to the junior students
I began to walk, kicking up dust with my sandals, I feel tears constricting in my throat and I let out a harsh gro-n
What did I do wrong?
Is there anything bad in wanting a new life?
Is there anything bad in wanting to be happy and free?
I study the beautiful duplex from afar
This was the house that I spent three years of my life
Three years with Amanda
Three years of pleasure and luxury
Three years of despair
three years of pain
Three years of perseverance all for the sake of education
And the painful part of it is that I couldn’t even achieve that
But am I really the bad influence as Mr Smith said
I was the one that was influenced and not the other way round

Ngozi’s pov
I marched home and I downloaded everything Kate told me to my mom
“.mummy I swear that man is a very shameless man,
Onye ara, very useless and worthless piece of trash! ”
My mom was angry but she didn’t show it, she just stood up calmly and stared at Kate
” Kate, I know it’s hærd, I know you didn’t grow up with a mother figure in your life so it hasn’t been easy to open up to people, but I’m here for you, I’ll be the mother you never had, can you please promise me that if anything happens that threatens your well-being that you will tell me”
Kate nodded her head with tears
” yes ma, thanks a lot ma”
My mom just explained Katie’s life in a summary
I went to my room and bring out Donald’s parcel from my bag
I peel open the wrappings and saw a stunning vest with shorts
It was mint green and it had ^Angel ^ inscribed at the back
I remember when I told him about people wearing couple hoodies
And he told me we would get ours and it will be angels and archangels
I honestly thought he was joking
As in who inscribes a vest with angels and archangels
I became confused
I brought out Cisco’s vest from my bag and placed it on the bed
Kate walked in
” Ngozi, is everything okay ”
” no, everything is not okay, you told me my boyfriend is a murderer how can everything be okay ”
“I’m sorry bestie, but it was all for your own good ”
“honestly Katie I I I don’t want to believe it ”
” I’m sorry Ngo, you know I’ll never lie to you ”
” yeah, I know, I’m just confused about everything and the least of it is the outfit I’m gonna be wearing tomorrow, is it Cisco’s or Donald’s ”
” wow, it’s beautiful, I prefer Cisco’s cause technically he gave you first ”

“eew stop calling him that, it gives me the creeps, I don’t even like his own vest, it looks like PE outfit but Cisco’s own is cool, you can knack it on Jeans”

Amanda’s pov
I got to the house and was surprised by the unfamiliar silence
No smell of breakfast being prepared in the kitchen
No refreshing juice and snacks on the living room table
No sign of Tife
I went to her room and met all her things still intact
I caught sight of a note attached to the bed

I just smiled
She has to be joking

She doesn’t know anywhere in this city
I wonder if I haven’t been too harsh in dealing with her

Ngozi’s pov
I woke up the next morning and say my prayers
I and my sisters went to do our chores
Then I wear my PE outfit despite Kate’s warnings
” Ngozi I swear you’re very stubborn, I told you to wear Cisco’s vest but you didn’t listen ”
I don’t even listen to her
Just like I didn’t listen to her last night when I made a call to Jerry’s mom without her knowledge
I can’t just fold hands and watch one useless man make things difficult for my best friend
Jerry’s mom had been furious and had promised to help
I wonder why she likes Kate so much

I look at chioma’s hand and saw a paracetamol tablet
” did I tell you I’m sick, it’s glucose I need and not paracetamol ”
” you need it oh, don’t say I did not warn you now, just be careful ”
I swear chioma use to act weird a lot

Kate’s pov
I and chioma and Ngozi entered the school compound and I caught sight of Jerry’s mom
What is she doing here!
” hey! Katie, I’ve been looking for you ”

” good morning ma” we greet her
” morning girls, come on Katie, let’s go to the principal’s office ”
Ngozi started winking at me
” go na, go go go ”
I went to meet her and we went to the principal’s office
I saw the shocked look on Mr Smith’s face as he saw me enter with her
” good morning Mr Smith ”
” um good day, Mrs Williams ”
” I have a very busy schedule, so I’ll get straight to the point, are you aware that this young lady that you’ve been assaulting and bullying is my precious goddaughter ”
I saw Mr Smith eyeballs literally pop out of their sockets
” um MA, I’m very sorry, I didn’t mean it, I was just playing with her, ehn Kate, is it because of small play like this that you went to inform your godmother ”
I just eyed him from head to toe
” Mr Smith, I’m sure you don’t want bad publicity for your school, but if you dare to make things difficult for my daughter, I will esc-rt your school to hell ”
Mr Smith nodded
Wow! It feels good to actually have an influential person at my back
I don’t know how I can ever repay Mrs Williams for her kindness
” but ma, are you aware that your son actually paid miss Kate’s tuition fee ”
Mr Smith said with a smirk

I saw a look of utter disappointment and disbelief on her face

He actually had the nerve to chuckle
“of course it’s true Mrs Williams, why would I tell lies against her, the goddaughter that you’re protecting is not as innocent as you think, she has a bad reputation for extorting and sleeping with guys in this school, she hasn’t even paid her WAECfees, I’m sure she’s still waiting for the next gullible student to extort ”

I always cry whenever someone accuses me falsely

I began to run away from me principal’s office. Away from everything

Chapter twenty three
“Kate!, Kate!!, Kate!!! ”
I hear Ngozi calling me
I don’t even answer
I began to run
Then I bump into someone
It turned out to be Ngozi’s mom
” mom….. ”
She just pulled me into a hug and the pent up tears started flowing
” mom, he…… Lied…… ”
” I know, I know, I know, I’m going in to have a word with him, come on let’s go ”
“how do you know mom ”
I didn’t even know I was calling her mom
” I was already on my way when Ngozi called me”
” but mom some of it is true, Jerry paid my school fees ”
” it’s okay dear, everything is okay ”
We went into the office and met Mr Smith and Mrs Williams signing a sort of doc-ment
Although Ngozi’s mom may not be influential, she still has a domineering presence
“Katie dear, why did you run off like that ”
Mrs Williams said when she lifted up her head and saw me
Katie dear???
She saw my look of confusion
“,wait! what!!, do you think I blame you, of course not, I know my son, I’ll rather believe you over this shameless man ”

” ehn ehn Mr Smith Abi what is your name, who gave you the right to disturb my daughter ”
She sat down on the chair with action woman pose
It was Mr Smith’s turn to look confused
” but I didn’t disturb your daughter MA?”
She laughed and clapped her hands
” Mrs Adams, take it easy, I have handled him, I’ve just paid Kate’s WAEC fees and signed an agreement with him, if he goes around talking shit or making things difficult for Katie, I will sue his school and by God’s grace, my husband’s connection and mine, I will make sure this school gets locked up forever ”
She paid my examination fees!

He drooped his head in shame
Jerry and Ngozi raced into the office
” Katie! Katie!! the competition is about to start!!!, mom what are you doing here ”

Jerry’s face turned sour

He shrugged
I noticed that his vest was like the one Cisco gave Ngozi and his own had Jerry inscribed at the back
” na wah for you oh Kate, you just started running as if someone is chasing you ”
Ngozi said with a smile
Ngozi’s pov
We all assembled in the field
And our football coach was the supervisor of the event
” I’m sure all of you have been wondering, which sport are we going to be doing today, but life is full of surprises, and we’re going to be dishing out one of them, I know some of you may be thinking its football but it’s not, can anyone guess the sport we’re going to be doing today?? ”

” no you guys are all wrong, the sport for today is sackrace ”

When we’re not primary school students!
We all began to murmur
” this sackrace is not just any sackrace, it’s blindfolded sackrace, you see, sackrace is the best sport that could test a person’s stamina and speed while restricted, don’t waste time!, everyone grab your sacks!!, remember the rules!!!, hands on the sack!!!!, don’t come out of the sack for any reason!!!!, remember at the end of the race, only ten of you will be selected!!!!!, miss Ngozi!!!, if those boots are too big for you, why not pull them off!

I study the field, this was field 2A, and it is the largest field in Princeton, hay was stacked around the field and I notice that each contestant s₱0t has already been marked to avoid collision
Everyone quickly scampered into their sacks
” the judges are already on the other side of the field and they will determine the qualifiers, I wish you all best of luck, everyone go to your positions!, at the sound of the whistle!, run!!
A black piece of cloth was used to blind fold me
Which kind game be this for crying out loud!

I hear the shrill sound of the whistle and I begin to run
The funniest part of it is that I don’t even know if I’m ahead of others or behind
I kept hopping
One hand on the sack and one hand for balancing
I hopped a few more times when I feel a sharp stinging pain shoot up my leg
Ouch!
What the hell is that!
I can’t afford to stop
I kept on hopping and I continue stepping on those prickly things
Ouch! ouch!! ouch!!!
It felt like they were thrown methodically around the place
I don’t know when tears started spilling from my face
My legs suddenly felt heavy
I started feeling dizzy
I summoned all my strength and kept moving forward
It was hærd
I was losing balance
I don’t even know how far I’ve hopped
As I lifted each foot and stepped on the ground, the pins started getting deeper into my leg
I started praying
Oh lord please help me win this race, I promise I’ll start paying my tithes, I’ll even join the drama group
” and the first winner is miss halimah dauda ”
Fear gripped me
So someone has already reached the finishing line
I continue hopping
And they continue calling names
My head felt woozy
And I collapse on the ribbon
And that was the last thing I know before I slumped
Kate’s pov
I reached the finishing line a few minutes before I saw Ngozi slump on the ground
Ngozi!!!!
I yelled
Everybody quickly surrounded her
“she collapsed because of exhaustion ”
The school nurse said
I watch Jerry examine her
” you’re wrong ma’am, she’s been poisoned ”

” Ewoooo! Chineke!!, they want to kill my daughter for me ooo!!!, who did I offend!!!!”
Ngozi’s mom exclaimed
” mom, youre still here ”
I saw her and Mrs Williams examining Ngozi
” I need two people to carry here to the sick bay, make sure you don’t touch the infected area “Francis and Ahmed quickly picked her up and took her to the sick bay
Jerry took control of the situation and shouted at anyone who went near
” village people why??,
Ngozi’s mom said dramatically
I became confused

Mrs Adams said and started loosening her head tie
” mum please everything will be okay ”
But deep down my heart was breaking

Bukky said with a sob
Mrs Williams had a sour look on her face
I and Bukky raced to the sick and I was informed that Jerry has gone to the sick bay
I saw Ngozi’s frail body on the bed
We ran to the sick bay and meet Jerry mixing some chemicals together
I look at his handsome face so concentrated on the thing he was doing
I noticed the furrows on his brows
I noticed his s€×y mouth
God! What’s happening to me!

” so what’s the diagnosis ”
” I’m afraid she’s been poisoned with cyanide, someone deliberately infected the drawing pins with them and scattered it on her s₱0t in the field, but there’s a good news and a bad one ”

” yes! Sodium cyanide, I’m trying to bind hydrosocobalamin with nontoxic vitamin to neutralize cyanide and allow an enzyme called rhodanese to further detoxify cyanide in the liver ”
I just nodded my head like a monkey

” so what’s the good news and bad news ”
” the good news is that sodium cyanide isn’t a deadly poison but the bad news is that too much of it can lead to coma ”

We raced back to the field and downloaded everything to Mrs Williams and mom
Mrs Williams was spitting with rage
” I give you two minutes to own up or else every single one of you will be locked up tonight ”
All the contestants started squirming in fright
I watch one boy come forward calmly
One short man devil like that
The tribal marks on his face sef is like map!
” my dad is a herbalist MA, I’ll fish the culprit out
