Unfulfilled Promises
season 2
Episode 29

#########
“Say Daddy loves me,” Eric implored his
daughter who was seated beside him on
the sofa.
“Daddy yuvsmee,” His two year old
daughter replied, giggling.
“Oh, you’re a hopeless case.” He gave up,
laughing.

“Opyes case,” she ins**ted with her lovely
eyes portraying innocence, making her
dad laugh again.
Oleng looked at both of them and laughed
as she came into the living room. Her
daughter was two years old today and
they were having a small get together in
Eric’s family house. She was putting baby
stuff in Erica’s baby bag.
“Stop trying to teach her to pronounce
correctly When you were two years old
could you even say the letter ‘a’?” she
teased.
“Of course,” he admitted.
“Of cos,” his daughter chirped after him
Her parents laughed again. She was fond
of mimicking her dad.
“I will get you for that,” he admonished her
playfully and touched her nose.
“I wiv get ju for…for…” She looked as if she
was going to cry because she couldn’t
remember the rest.

Eric laughed and carried his daughter and
gave her a peck. She smiled again.
“I’m ready,” Oleng said as she carried
Erica’s baby bag.
“You look smashing.”
“Juyuksma…sma…”
“I think we should gag her or better still
why don’t you keep quiet throughout the
journey? Thanks for the compliment
though,” Oleng smiled. She turned around
at 360 degrees for him to appreciate her
attire of loose black trousers, a s€×y
cream shirt and black Jimmy Choo shoes.
He whistled.
His daughter tried to also.
Eric rolled his eyes but managed to steal
a k-ss from her mother The doorbell rang
and he broke off the k-ss Erica giggled.
She loved the sound of the doorbell. Eric
had spent one afternoon ringing the
doorbell continuously to placate her when
she had been crying for her mum who
went out.

Eric looked at Oleng before going to open
the door.
“Oh, look at my angel, looking so
beautiful. Happy birthday!” Aunt Vien said
to the smiling baby. Eric passed the
beautiful girl to her and went to stand
beside the startled Oleng.
“Sunshine,” he softly called and held her
hand.
She turned hurt eyes to his. “How could
you?”
“I wanted it to be a surprise. It’s been two
months, sunshine. You need to forgive
her. She was under your mum’s
influence.”
“Still you should have given me a warning
of her coming.”

“I didn’t want you to refuse. She has
suffered enough. Please forgive her,” he
pleaded and as if on cue, her aunt came
closer.
Oleng was shocked when her aunt came
closer. Aunt Vien was looking so lean. She
looked older than her age. Her anger
flared when she remembered how
beautiful her mum was still looking
despite her wickedness but here was her
aunt looking haggard because of her guilt.

She made up her mind at that moment to
forgive her.
“Oleng, how are you?” Aunt Vien asked
but Oleng was still lost in thought so she
couldn’t reply. Her aunt felt bad at that. “I
know you have every right to be angry
with me but believe me, I’ve flogged
myself verbally so many times for
deceiving you so many years ago and for
not telling you about Eric. Please forgive
me,” she said with deep sadness, not
looking at her while Erica chirped playfully
and clapped her hands.
There was silence except for Erica’s
chirpings.
“Sunshine,” Eric called softly.
Oleng disengaged from his hold and
walked to her aunt.
“I forgive you,” she told the woman who
was like a mother to her with joy in her
eyes and Eric rushed forward to carry his
daughter. “I missed you.”

“Oh, dearie, I missed you too,” Her aunt
cried and they hugged, each trying to
contain their tears.
Eric stood behind them smiling.
“Perfect,” he intoned with a huge grin.
And as usual, “Pafet,” his daughter
cloned.
After the teary reunion, they all went to the
party. Aunt Vien was introduced to the
family and was instantly welcomed. They
had a lot of fun at the party. Eric was glad
to be away from his daughter though he
missed her because of her constant
repetition of his words.

She kept moving from one hand to the
other even though she could walk. She
was very happy at all the attention. Eric
knew he was going to have a problem
with boys because his daughter was very
beautiful and thrived on attention. She
had insisted that she wanted to wear a
gold halter neck dress and blue jeans to
her birthday party. She had thrown a
tantrum when they had tried to make her
wear the dress he had gotten for her
birthday; a beautiful white lace dress. So
they had given in. Yeah, his daughter was
spoilt rotten!

His happy day was dented when he saw a
sad look cross Oleng’s face. He followed
her when she moved to the balcony.
“Sunshine,” he drawled softly when he
saw her wrap her hands around herself.
“You startled me,” she said, smiling when
he came closer.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to,” he remarked
and put his arm around her shoulders as
they stared at the glowing lights from the
next compound. “What’s wrong?”
“What do you mean?”
“Why are you sad?”
“I’m not…”
“Don’t lie to me.”

She sighed. “He’s supposed to be here
with us. I know I don’t know him but I
miss his presence.”
“Me too.”
“It’s been two months, Eric. Do you think
we will ever find him?”
“I don’t know. The private investigator got
to a dead end on the streets. He has even
been to prisons and hospitals like we did
but nothing. Gosh! Oleng, I don’t know
what more to do.” He sounded frustrated.
“Well, I think we should not stop praying.
We should continue having faith that
someday we will find him.” She turned in
his arms and k-ssed him.

##########
Eric maneuvered the steering wheel with
ease, singing along to the country music
by Don Williams in his car’s CD player. He
loved country music with a passion. He
was in a particularly good mood today but
didn’t know why. He had woken up very
happy and had prepared for work, singing
to the amazement of his parents and
relatives. He hadn’t moved out of his
parents’ home because they had begged
him to stay. He had obliged them
because the thought of living alone
displeased him. What was the need of
staying in the house he had bought when
he would live in it alone?
His joy dampened a little when he thought
of Oleng. When would he ever have the
courage to ask her to marry him? Dave
had been dead for over a year now but he
felt she would turn him down. She had
this overbearing loyal streak when it came
to Dave. Despite the fact that she
professed her love for him, she was still
inhibited in some ways. He had to
contend himself with chaste k-sses again
after their mind blowing s€× in that hotel’s
bathroom and bed afterwards. She didn’t
want them to make love in her late
husband’s house. She felt it wasn’t right
yet she had refused to move out. He really
wanted them to be a family.

He thought about his missing son and
shook his head. It had been six months
since that note yet all the private
investigators he had hired had come back
with the same news. Eric had suddenly
disappeared one morning from the house
he had been maltreated for a year. No
one, not even their neighbors knew of his
whereabouts.

Eric gripped his steering wheel tightly. He
remembered how Oleng had worried
herself to exhaustion that period. She had
kept on lamenting that he had been used
for money making rituals by his so-called
relatives. He had had the mind to go and
have her mother and his son’s foster
relatives arrested and thrown in jail with
the keys thrown in the ocean, but he really
didn’t have a case against them, and
knew it wouldn’t help bring his son back.
He had comforted Oleng by telling her
they would have more sons, but she had
kept repeating that she wanted that
particular son.
He shook his head from his disturbing
thoughts. There was no use crying over
spilt milk. He heard his cell phone ring and
smiled. It was his sunshine. He picked up
his blackberry, smiling.
“Hello sunshine.”

“Hi sweetheart, are you back from your
site?”
“I’m on my way home now. In fact, I’m
almost at the estate. Any problem?”
“It’s Erica. She is teething and making a
nuisance of herself. She wants you. I’ve
been trying to placate her all day but she
has been crying for you.”
“Alright. Tell my little angel I’ll be with her
in a jiffy.”
“Thanks. Love you.”
“Love you too,” he replied, smiling and
replaced his phone back to its former
position but it fell on the floor of the car.
He bent to pick it up and place it back. As
he raised his head up, he heard a hell-
raising scre-m just before he hit someone
directly in front of the estate.
“Oh, my God!” he exclaimed as he hit the
brakes and stopped the car.
He sat there numb for seconds before he
quickly undid his seat belt and opened the door He ran to the front of his car and
stood there frozen, staring at the boy he
had hit.

UNFULFILLED PROMISES
SEASON 2 Episode 30

Onlookers were already shouting
at him to quickly rush the boy to
the hospital, but Eric just stood
there looking at the boy he had
no doubt was his lost son. It was when a passerby brushed
him aside that he woke up from
his reverie. He quickly asked him
to put the boy in the car. When
the boy was gently placed in the
back seat of the car by the man who got in also, Eric saw bl0*d
on the boy’s hand and shivered. “God please don’t let him die.
Not now that I’ve found him,”
he prayed inwardly before he
quickly put the key in the
ignition and drove to the private
hospital of his family doctor. “Is he your son?” The Good
Samaritan asked finally after he
had kept looking at both of
them; the unconscious boy in his
arms and the frantic driver. “Pardon?” Eric asked and
spared the man a glance as he
expertly maneuvered the car. “Is he your son?” he questioned
again. Eric stalled the car at the
question before apologizing and
moving it forward again. “How were you able to deduce
that?” he managed to ask. The man shrugged. “You both
look alike.” Eric nodded. “Yes, he’s my
son,” he proclaimed with pride.

“Imagine running down my own
son.” “Your wife will kill you.” The man
chuckled. Eric thought of Oleng then and
couldn’t help smiling. He shook
his head. “No. She’d be too glad
to see him to take my running
him down into cognizance.” He
grinned. “That’s if he lives,” he murmured with dread as an
afterthought. “He’ll live. He probably only
broke his hand,” The kind man
said. “I pray so,” Eric whispered. They finally got to the hospital
and between them, they got him
in,side. Eric’s family doctor
thankfully wasn’t busy and
quickly attended to him. Eric
thanked the passerby profusely and gave him a huge sum of
money which the man took,
thanked him and left. Eric prayed fervently that his
son would be alright. He couldn’t
imagine killing him after looking
for him for so long. The
knowledge would haunt him till
his dying day. The doctor finally came out and
told him that the boy was
alright. He had broken his hand
from hitting it against the car
and was bruised due to falling on
the hærd ground. Eric nearly wept with relief. He asked to see
the boy and was led to the
room. He ignored the elderly
doctor’s questioning looks when
they got to his son’s room. He
had eyes only for Eric. The doctor excused himself and left
Eric to gaze at his son as if he
was the eighth wonder of the
world. Eric couldn’t help the tears that
came to his eyes as he gazed at
his sleeping son. There was no
doubt in his mind that Eric was
his son. He touched the boy’s
face gingerly. Eric looked so much like him, it was uncanny. He was
tall for his age. He still had the
polished half-caste look. He
peered closely at him and
noticed he had Oleng in him also;
he had her nose. He touched the boy’s hair that was like his also;
wavy. Love for the boy, his son,
burst forth from him and he
hugged the sleeping boy. “Oh, Eric, if only you knew what
your mother and I have been
through in our search for you.

Where have you been?” he
soliloquized, thinking he was
talking to the sleeping boy. He noticed that Eric looked
healthy and had on expensive
clothes, shoes and wristwatch.
He was surprised at that
because he had been last seen
looking haggard. Had he been adopted?
Eric shook his head. He had to
stop asking himself questions
because Eric would surely answer
them when he woke up. His cell phone rang then and
from the ringing tone, he knew
it was Oleng. He castigated
himself for forgetting her. “Hello sunshine.” “Sweetheart, where are you
na?” she inquired with worry
and he could hear Erica
scre-ming her lungs out at the
back ground. “I’m at the hospital,” he
bluntly responded and
immediately hit his head with his
hand. He couldn’t seem to
control himself at finding his son.

“Hospital? What are you doing
there? Are you alright? Was it
an accident?” she was alarmed. “I’m alright; sunshine…I…hit
someone.” “My God! Is the person alright?” “Yes, I’m with him now.” “Oh, God, will the person be
alright?” “Yes but…I want you to meet
the person.” He didn’t know
how to tell her he had found
their son. “Is it that bad? I would have
loved to come over immediately
but Erica is still much of a terror
and I wouldn’t want to bring a
hysterical baby to the hospital.” “I’ll come and pick you.” “Okay. I’ll be ready in a jiffy.” Eric went back to look at his son.

He didn’t want to leave him but
the doctor had told him that he
would sleep for a long time
because of the sedatives and
pain killers he had been given. “Don’t worry, son. I’ll be right
back. I’m going to bring your
mum and little sister. You’re
going to love them especially
Erica. She’ll trouble you
immensely,” he informed the sleeping boy and smiled. He gave him a k-ss on the
forehead and left. He informed
the doctor he was leaving and
implored him to keep an eye on
the boy which he readily obliged. He drove to Oleng’s place
wondering how he was going to
tell her about Eric. He didn’t
want her to cause a scene at
the hospital because knowing
the over-emotional Oleng and how she had wanted to find Eric
badly; he knew she would bring
the wh0le hospital to that room.

He decided to tell her before
they left. He finally got to the
house and calmly went in. “Thank God you’re here at last.
Erica wants me dead with her
wailings,” she told him
immediately he got to the living
room. She handed her wailing
daughter to her father. “My angel, what’s wrong?” he
asked the baby as he carried
her. Her wailings subsided a little.
“She’s a bit warm.” “Yes. She even threw up. It’s
because she is teething.” “At this age? Isn’t she
supposed to be through with
that?” he asked and wiped his
baby’s tears away. “Nope, it’s the molars growing
stage and it’s particularly
painful.” “I’m sorry about that, my
angel. But you have to grow
your teeth so you can bite
mummy any time she upsets
you,” he teased. “Thanks a lot.” Oleng frowned
jocularly and gave him a k-ss
when he got closer. “How was
your day? I mean before the
accident.” “Fine,” he said flipp-ntly but
looked troubled. “The accident was bad, wasn’t
it? How did it happen anyway?”
She sat down beside him. “I just got off the phone from
talking to you. When I tried
replacing the phone, it fell on
the floor of the car, so I had to
bend to pick it up. When I
straightened, I ran into him.” “I’m sorry. I hope he isn’t in a
bad shape.” “No. He broke his arm though.” “That’s bad but thank God it’s
only his arm. What about his
family? Have you been able to
contact them? I mean his wife,
relatives or whoever?” she
casually asked but was surprised at the look on his face. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?
What are you not telling me?”
she inquired fearfully. He was silent before saying, “I
didn’t hit a man, Oleng. I hit a
boy.” “Is he dead?” She placed her
hands on her chest in horror. “Sunshine, I hit a fourteen year
old boy. My son,” he finally told
her. It didn’t register at first. “But
you don’t have a child. Did you
just find out about him?” She
felt hurt. Eric actually laughed to her
chagrin. “I said fourteen years
old boy. It was Eric I hit. I’ve
found our lost son.”
Oleng jumped up and scre-med.

“Eric!” Erica woke up at the noise and
started crying again. Eric had to
hush her up by swinging her
from side to side gently, but his
eyes never left Oleng’s who just
stood there with her hands cupped at her mouth staring at
him also. “You’re pulling my legs,” she
finally said and sat down again. “No. I’ve found Eric.” “How do you know he’s the
one? How do you know you
aren’t mistaken?” “I know. One look at him and
you’ll know he’s mine. You’ll
attest to that also when you
see him. The GoodSamaritan even
noticed. He’s Eric.” “My God…my God…my God!” she
kept repeating. Eric placed the sleeping and
finger s-cking Erica softly on the
sofa and got up to envelope the
love of his life in a bear hug. “It’s okay, sunshine. It’s
alright. We’ve found him. We’ve
found our son. Everything will be
alright.” “My God!” she said again. She
was too overwhelmed to say
anything coherent. Eric chuckled. He hadn’t
expected her to be monosyllabic. “We have to go to him. What
are we waiting for?” She rushed
out of his arms and went in,side. He carefully lifted Erica up and
left the house. Oleng came to
join him in the car shortly. The drive to the hospital was a
silent and tense one. When the
car finally pulled up in front of
the hospital, Oleng turned to him
with the sleeping Erica in her
arms. “What if he’s not the one?”
she questioned nervously. “He’s the one,” he firmly but
gently told her and got out of
the car. They stopped at the door of the
private room their son was in.
Oleng gripped his hand in fear. He
took Erica from her and hugged
her. “It’s alright, sunshine.” When he realized she had gotten
a grip on herself, he finally
opened the door. They walked
quietly to the sleeping boy in the
private room. “Ricky! He’s the one!” Tears
she had been holding at bay
rushed down her eyes at the
first glimpse of her son. She
touched his face gingerly like Eric
had done earlier. “My son, my son,” she ranted. She sat down at the side of the
bed and hugged him with her
tears dropping on him. “God, thank you very much. My
baby is back. Oh, Eric! Where
have you been? I thought I
would never see you again. I
thought you were dead…I love
you so much. Please don’t leave me again,” she whispered and
continued crying tears of joy. Eric stood there looking at his
son and his mother. Love for
both of them robbed him of
words. He was so happy to see
them together. Oleng turned to
look at him then. “Oh, Ricky, thank you.

Thank you very much for this
wonderful gift. Thank you for
finding him.” She k-ssed and
hugged him. “I can’t take it all. After so
many years, so many years.”
She sniffed. “It’s okay. Please calm down.
We don’t want to wake him up,
do we?” She shook her head. “No,
certainly not.” She smiled through her tears
“Oh, God is so wonderful. We
have both our kids with us. I’m
so happy.” “Me too, sunshine…me too,” Eric
replied, smiling profusely too.
