Everything works together for good for those that love the Lord, but most times, we encounter crisis that leaves us in doubt about God’s love for us. In Faith’s case, she felt betrayed by God and saw no reason to be of service to him after all she had gone through; despite being faithful to his commandments and living a decent life. Just take a minute to imagine yourself in Faith’s shoes to see reasons why she fell from the God addict she used to be before the rape incident and new HIV health status. Too bad!
Immediately Faith sighed and angrily turned off the radio station that was airing gospel ministration, David’s attention was instantly drawn to her actions to the extent that he didn’t even know when he parked his car beside the road. Without being told, David knew the reason for Faith’s actions but he wasn’t happy that she had let her grudge for God eat deeply into her heart. At that moment, he asked God for wisdom to handle the situation because it seemed beyond him.
“Why did you turn off the radio? I thought we have been through this before and I begged you to let go of every grudge you have in your heart for God. This anger isn’t doing you any good but would only harm you. For how long will you continue hurting yourself this way? Please, this has to stop because I can’t sit and watch you turn your back against the only person that can heal you and restore your health. This has got to stop” he bluntly said.
When David was done talking, he waited for Faith to say something in return but she was mute. With no response from her, he turned the car engine back on and was about to drive off when she suddenly spoke. “Stop the car!” She commanded, “Why?” David asked, “Nothing, just stop the car, I want to take a taxi home” she replied.
There and then, David realized that he might have stroke a nerve that resulted to Faith’s anger towards him but he wasn’t going to let her stay angry, neither was he about to let her out of his car just because she said so. Without hesitating, he drove off and locked all doors from the control button in the driver’s seat.
On seeing that David had locked the door and was driving in high speed, Faith began to cry bitterly. She cried nonstop till they got to her house. When David arrived at her destination, he parked beside her gate and turned off the car. Without interrupting, he allowed her to cry till she had emptied her heart of every pain and agony she was feeling at that moment. It was painful to watch her cry but he had to give her space to vent her anger before having a word with her.
It’s been 14 minutes since David arrived at Faith’s house and by that time, she was done crying and began to sob. He handed her a handkerchief to wipe her tears away but she rejected it and used her palms to wipe her tears away. David felt hurt knowing that his actions might be the reason for her pains but there was nothing he could do at that moment because the deeds had already been done. When she finally regained herself, he broke the silence.
“I’m sorry for talking to you the way I did, it wasn’t intentional and certainly wasn’t aimed at causing you pain. It’s just that I feel you are making a big mistake by pushing God away from your life. I know you are hurt by how bad your life turned out to be after everything you did to please God, but also remember that while you pleased God, you were also living a life you were proud of. I might not have the answers to all the questions you seek, neither do I know why God allowed a fate like this befall you, but all I want to tell you this very moment is that everything happens for a reason. Just trust that there’s a reason for what you are going through right now. It might not make sense now but it definitely would someday. Free your heart from every burden and trust God; who knows? Your healing might be around the corner. I hate to see you this way, so please get yourself together and retrace your steps back to God. I really care about you and certainly want the very best for you dear” David calmly said. When he was done talking, it felt as though the wh0le atmosphere suddenly became calm. One could tell that God’s presence was evident in the car and emotional/mental healing had taken place in Faith’s life.
At that moment, Faith was touched beyond words could say. It’s evident that David’s words touched her heart. Due to lack of words to express the gratitude in her heart, she look towards David and said the most heartfelt “Thank You” ever. David told her not to mention and assured her that he would help her retrace her steps back to God. It was a huge commitment and goal but he was determined to be by her side and help regain her love for God.
That day ended on a good note and marked the beginning of something beautiful. It wasn’t going to be easy for Faith to become the once zealous and firebrand lady for God she used to be, but a tiny drop of water eventually makes up an ocean. The good thing is that she wasn’t going to do it alone because David was there to guide her all through the way.
The next day, David sent Faith few audio tapes on healing and also on prayer and fasting. The tapes were gospel messages from a minister that functioned very well in the ministry of healing the sick. David gave her a deadline to listen to the tapes and give her remark afterwards. In just a space of one week, Faith had listened to four tapes on healing. Every morning, David sent positive affirmations to her and gave her action plans to carry out during the day. He sent meditational tones, sounds and messages to her as well, so as to calm her nerves and make her more in control of her emotions. She wasn’t feeling the impact at first but with time, she began to see the results of every drilling David was subjecting her to.
Before a month elapsed, Faith had soaked herself so deep in those healing tapes to the extent that she could even finish the sentences of the ministers. She became a walking power and a beaming light reflecting God’s glory. At that time, she still hadn’t resumed going to church because she didn’t know how to face her brethrens and explain why she went MIA (missing in action) on them for a very long time.
David figured that Faith was having a hærd time with the decision of going back to her former church so he suggested that she comes with him to his own church, since no one might recognize her there and possibly judge her. The suggestion seemed like a good one to Faith so she didn’t hesitate to go for it.
This new development made David a lot happier than before because he knew his influence over Faith would be more effective now that she had decided to become a member of the local assembly he worsh¡pped in. The fact that she even accepted his offer showed that she had come a long way in her healing and was headed towards total redemption from her past. Despite the fact that Faith’s scars were still fresh and evident, she didn’t want it to define her anymore. Life somehow looked promising for the once devastated young lady whose life was headed for a ditch. Faith wasn’t the happiest woman on earth but she was now in a good place; far much better than where she used to be.
Fortunately, Sundays became a day to look forward to for Faith. She loved the way the ministers in David’s church preached the word of God in it’s simplest form. They broke things down in such a way that she understood the word of God like never before. David always sat close to her to give any assistance she needed during service. It was always a good time well spent in the presence of God and this made her want more even after service had ended.
One fateful day as they headed home from Sunday service, David engaged Faith in a discussion about what was taught in church that Sunday. “How was service today?” He happily asked, “It was awesome, I had a good time and was blessed by the sermon” she replied with a smile on her face. David was relieved by her response and probed further. “Do you now believe that God can do anything?” He asked, “absolutely” she replied and looked towards his direction, in anticipation of what he would say next. David paused for while and dropped a shocker; “Do you believe God can change your HIV status from Positive to Negative?” He outrightly asked and she was mute.
At that moment, there were over a thousand thoughts in Faith’s mind. She was hesitant in replying because she knew there was no scientific cure for HIV yet. Despite the fact that she had listen to dozens of healing tapes and read books that centered on healing, she was still in doubt that God could perform such miracle in her own life. It seemed easy to believe what she read in a book or listened to, but it was hærd for her to envision it in her own life. It’s safe to say that Faith had ‘zero faith’ that God could heal her from the deadly virus. After thinking of the perfect answer to David’s question, she finally broke the silence.
“I know God is capable of healing me but I don’t think it would ever happen” Faith sadly revealed. “Why do you think so?” David curiously inquired, “Because I find it hærd to believe that God have time for me when there are other people that are worth his time and healing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I don’t believe in God’s ability to heal the sick, I just find it hærd to believe that I am that special for God to have my time. Besides, if God wanted those in my condition to get better, then he probably would have given doctors and scientist the knowledge to find a cure for HIV. Why allow so many people get the virus and heal only few later? What then happens to others infected with the virus? Won’t they receive their healings too?. I know what I am saying might not make much sense to you but it does to me. There’s just too many water under the bridge for me to ever believe that God loves me so much to allow something of this magnitude happen to me and then heal me after. Why allow me to contact the virus only to heal me later? There are just too many questions that I need answers to, otherwise, my faith in God for a healing might never be enough to trigger a miracle from him” Faith bluntly said. Immediately she voiced her last word, David froze and was utterly speechless.
For over 20 minutes as David drove the car, he still didn’t have the right answers to Faith’s numerous questions. Deep down, he knew that if he didn’t come up with the perfect answer fast enough, he might lose the only chance to ever convince Faith that God wasn’t her enemy but her friend and that he wanted to heal her more than anything in the world. He knew that if he didn’t correct her rigid mindset, she might live the rest of her life perceiving God the wrong way.
As David got closer to Faith’s house, he kept praying within for the perfect reply to give to her. He asked the Holy Spirit to take charge of his tongue and do what he knows how to do best. David didn’t want to lose this rare opportunity to make things right between Faith and God. It was a long shot but the good thing about the holy spirit is that whenever you invite him to take charge, he actually does.
Finally, they got to Faith’s house and David parked beside her gate. He turned towards Faith, looked into her eyes and broke the silence. “If there was one bad thing you could change in this world, what would it be?” He calmly asked. Faith was quiet for few seconds and replied “I would make sure that there aren’t any sick person in the hospital because I would heal them all” she replied. “Good! now how many sick people have you visited in the hospital to pray for, pay their hospital bills or give gifts to since you were born?” He further asked and she was speechless. After another few seconds, she replied “Maybe 2 or 3, I can’t really remember”.
Immediately Faith gave that response, David chuckled and looked even deeper into her eyes. At that point, her palms became sweaty but she still comported herself. “Ok, let’s agree that you have visited 3 sick people in the hospital since you were born; could you have done more if you wanted to or not?” He asked, “I could have done more if I wanted to” she replied, “then why didn’t you do more?” He inquired and there was another round of silence in the car.
On seeing that Faith couldn’t get herself out of the trap David had set for her, he then knew he had gotten her right in the place he wanted her to be. At that point, the Holy Spirit had taken over and knew it was time to strike. Without hesitating, David began to school Faith.
“You see why it’s so easy to point a finger at God, while forgetting that the other 4 fingers are pointing back at you? We were all created in God’s image and likeness so that means we behave, think and act like our heavenly father. Whatever problem you see in this world and expect God to handle is something you can as well handle as a child of God. So far as we live, there will always be good and evil because of the fall of Adam in the garden of eden. The way this world is presently, wasn’t what God originally intended for us ‘his children’. The fall of Adam brought about this hærdsh¡p, sickness, hunger, war and deaths that we see today. It isn’t God’s intention for anyone to be sick, that’s why Jesus came after so many years later to correct some things and also give us the authority and power over the devil that now rules over this world with his cohorts. Do you ever think that God would intentionally let something bad happen to his children? Do you think God was the one that allowed this sad fate befall your health? Have you forgotten that the devil roams around looking for whom to devour at any slightest chance God’s covering leaves his children? You have to begin to see things from a different perspective if you ever want to experience God’s healing in your life. If you want the world to be better place, it first starts with you and I because we are the God we see on earth. I told you the other time that Jesus no longer have authority here on earth, that’s why he equipped us with the same power he functioned with while on earth before ascending to be at the right hand side of his father. In order for you to be healed from this virus, you have to first believe that it possible and also have faith that it would happen to you. Forget about the reports of the doctors and scientists who says there is no cure for HIV. My question to you is ‘whose report do you believe? God’s report or that of scientists and doctors? It’s about time you totally surrender to God and drop every doubts you have at his feet. Nothing happens unless you believe and have faith. I wish you can have a glimpse of how much God loves you. He never stopped loving you even when you turned your back against him. It’s ok to backslide in Faith when crisis happens but don’t go too far astray and forget every other good thing God ever did for you in the past. Open your book of remembrance and refresh your memory of all the good things God did for you in the past; that way, you would have so many reasons to be grateful and hopeful” He said.
Oh My! Words would fail me to fully explain how Faith felt at that moment. The magnitude of wisdom that left David’s mouth was enough to reset her mindset and get her thinking right again. The rush of feelings were too intense that she didn’t even know when tears began to fall from her eyes. That day was the first day she felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in a way she never did before. It was clear that God spoke to her through David. A change of heart was inevitable!
As Faith sat there crying, David reached out to her and gave her a warm hug. Immediately he hugged her, the cry became even more intense to the extent that he had to wipe her tears with his handkerchief. “It’s alright, don’t cry anymore” he said as he gently wiped her tears with his handkerchiefs. Faith thanked him from the bottom of her heart but he told her not to mention.
From that day henceforth, Faith’s ‘faith’ decked. She went from having little faith to having faith that could move mountains. Amazingly, she began to believe God for a HIV negative result. She wrote “Negative” on sticky notes and paste all over her room. She changed her phone wallpaper and screensaver to a write-up that had “I am Negative”. Her miracle was a long shot but she wasn’t going to back down ever again. With David by her side, everything seemed possible.
Day in day out, they believed God for a miracle and even fasted occasionally too. Their faith could move mountains and they channel all that energy and prayer to only one request, which was ‘a Negative HIV Result’. Everything seem alright till Faith realized that she had developed feelings for David along the line. They only saw each other as close friends and nothing more; sadly, she now saw him in another way but was scared of revealing her feelings to him because she felt he would never love her in return, due to her health condition. She continued to live in denial till one fateful day.
It happened one evening that David was supposed to meet up with Faith after work at a restaurant for them to talk and have dinner. This was their usual ritual every week but it seemed as though he couldn’t make it that day. She tried calling him severally but network was bad so she decided to pay him a surprise visit at his house; since they usually visited each other’s houses.
On that particular day, Faith didn’t call before stopping by at David’s house because the call wasn’t connecting. When she got to his apartment, she knocked on the door thrice and someone scre-med “Hold on, I’m coming” from in,side. That voice sounded nothing like David’s voice but she kept her cool and waited for the door to open.
Few seconds later, the door opened and a beautiful damsel was standing in front of it. Shocked and dumbfounded, Faith wondered who the mysterious lady was. As she was lost in her thoughts, she was brought back to reality when the mysterious lady asked “please who are you looking for?”.
Faith manged to put herself together and answer the question. “I am looking for David, is he around? I called but his phone wasn’t connecting” she said. The lady paused for few seconds and asked “Are you the sick lady my boyfriend has been hanging out with? He has told me so much about you. You are Faith right?”.
At that moment Faith didn’t know when tears began to fall from her eyes. The fact that a lady she hadn’t seem before in her life referred to her as “Sick lady” shattered her heart into tiny pieces. Just as she stood there trying so hærd to hold back the tears that fell from her eyes, a voice from behind the lady said “Valarie, who’s at the door?”.
Before Valarie could reply, the person walked from the livingroom to the balcony and opened the door w¡der. Lo & Behold, it was no other person than the owner of the house ‘David’. Immediately his eyes locked with Faith’s eyes, she walked out on them and ran towards her car crying.
David immediately pursued her but before he could get to where her car was parked, she had already zoomed off.
