“Wake up Candy, wake up!” I flew up from my bed, finding myself standing on my feet. I sighed heavily, time to find out what is in that library. I wore my slippers, picked my night jacket and wore it. I headed to the library, trying to be as silent as possible.
When I reached the library, I walked to aisle 23 like I saw in my dream, then I was confuse on where to turn to.
“Candy, turn left.” Her voice echoed in my head, I turned left and walked forward until she whispered “Right.” I followed her instruction until once again I was standing in front of the painted wall.
“Where is my tail?
Where are my wings?
Where are my scales?
Where is my life?
Do not hide from me what you have
Do not forget the key
Remember the shell scaled tail
Remember the me you have.” I repeated her words.
If the past experience have thought me well about Victoria, this particular key must be with me. I thought back to everything Victoria have to me, the ones I can remember. A valuable asset she gave to me, it had to be something.
Nothing related to a tail or mermaid. I sat down on the floor and rest my back on the book shelf, nothing came to mind but there had to be something. I closed my eyes and continued trying to remember, but I dozed off.
It was me as a little girl, I was two. How I was able to remember that was probably my brain. My parents took me to the park, rather took themselves to the park for a rom-ntic dinner and left me with my nanny. A young man came over to her, smiling flirtatiously. My nanny smiled back.
“Hello Becky, we meet again,” he said with his best Mr. Cool smile. “Remember the promise you made to me? If we meet again for the…”
“Fifth time, I know. Have you been stalking me?” Nanny Becky asked forming a frown.
Oh my God! He found me again! The seer was right!
I could hear her thought, probably because it’s a dream.
“No, I just keep praying, can we talk please? Please don’t… Is this your baby? Are you married?” He asked with sad eyes.
“I work for the parents of this child, they are having some time alone,” he sighed with relief. “Okay Idalia, I’ll be back, just play with your teddies before I get back.” She stood up, caged me with the teddy bears and played my favourite song for me.
I have always been a music lover.
“Be back baby,”
“Okay,” I giggled. She k-ssed my forehead and left with the man. I continued playing with my toys, not until I saw a baby bunny creep out of a bush.
“Baby bunny! Mommy look! Baby bunny!” The bunny hopped back into the bush because of the way I shouted. I pushed the bears away, stood up wobbly and hurried after the bunny. I pushed the leaves out of the way, pushing myself further into the bush.
I made it through the bush and hurried after the bunny who kept hopping away. I kept running after the baby bunny, calling after the bunny. I ran out of the park, heading to the connected woods. The urge to catch it coursed through me, my feet moved so fast and before I could blink, I caught the bunny and hugged it in my arms. I pet the bunny as I giggled.
“Cute baby bunny,” I heard a snarl. I looked up to see a jackal, but of course I thought it was a puppy. He snarled again, causing the bunny to tremble with fear. “Hey, stop scarwie bunny, get haway!”
He rushed at me, I simply waved my hand and a bright white light emitted from my fingers, forming three twisted whΒ‘ps. The whΒ‘ps flogged the jackal on his face, sending him flying back and hitting a tree. I giggled, the bunny hopped free from my embrace and ran for it life.
“Hey bunny! Come back bunny!” I threw myself on the ground and began to cry, scre-ming at the top of my voice which was very very very high. I mo-ned, the memory was hurting my head. I could feel my eyes changing colour, all the colours in the world was turning plain white.
“Idalia,” I paused for a second and looked up at the woman hovering over me. My mouth fell open with awe, she was flying. As a child, I had no idea who she was, but as me I knew she was Tori.
“Fairy! Cawie me!” I shrieked with enthusiasm, stretching my hands to her. She smiled at me and lowered herself down.
“You have grown so big my candy,” she scooped me into her arms and pinched my nose. “How are you? Someone’s power is starting to unlock,” she teased, rubbing her nose against mine. “Your powers shouldn’t be open yet, Cressida will be able to feel it from where she is and come after you, I can’t let that happen my angel, I must protect you. It isn’t everyday I can find one that can take my place, so for your own sake, I’ll take your powers and bestow it back when you come of age.”
“Fairy Queen, can I meet Puter Pam?”
“Of course,” she laughed. She pulled out a strand of her hair, the strand whirled around her index finger, crawled into my left hand and entered my vein. It felt like I was stung by a bee, the pain was there but yet I wasn’t crying, I was amuse. She picked out a strand of my hair, a single lock that had turned white.
The strand of hair wrapped itself around her wrist and whirled along her forearm to her shoulders, around her neck and onto her right arm. The hair reached her right index finger then she whirled it in the air like a ballerina dancing with a ribbon.
“My tail, my wings, my scales, my life, this is the key I give to you.” The hair zipped through the air and into the necklace on Tori’s neck. The necklace was beautiful, a tailed fairy as it pendant. The necklace appeared on my neck and disappeared into my body. Me the little girl was dozing off, I felt weak.
“Idalia! Idalia!” I heard Becky shout in panic, “I’m going to jail for sure…”
“We’ll find her before they notice…”
“Don’t touch me! If anything happens to that child, I will never forgive you!!!” Becky roared.
“Right then, time to go. I’ll tell you a word girl, remember…”
“Idalia!!!”
“Ailadi.” She whispered. I opened my eyes, I was back at the library. For a brief moment, I can swear I saw Victoria crouching in front of me, tears streaming down her face.
“You have always been looking out for me from the very beginning, did you choose me from birth?” The wind only blew my dress up, ordering me to stand. I stood on my feet, using the shelf to support my weight.
I placed my hand on neck and whispered the word she told me. I felt something form underneath my hand. I looked down at the necklace. “Okay necklace, open this wall if possible.” The tailed fairy lit up, she pulled out and flew into the painting, joining the other mermaids in swimming.
I was awestruck, the mermaids in the pictures were laughing as they played and danced in the flowing waterfall. The picture had come to live. I took in a deep breath and walked into the wall, the force that went through me was like nothing I had ever felt before. I fell down on whatever ground I was, green. I raised my head, my mouth fell open, I was in an enchanted forest.
“Don’t get too excited,” I scre-med and jerked to my feet. “Is she really the one Victoria chose to succeed her? She’s jumpy.”
“Shut up Mimi,” I looked around for who was talking, I couldn’t see anyone. “Down here miss, down down!” I bent down and peered, something was moving.
“Talking c*ckroaches?”
“c-ckroaches!” About five voice exclaimed in shock and annoyance.
“She called us vermin, what an insult,”
“Sorry,” I apologise, I knelt down.
“Hey! Careful where you put those heavy knees of yours! We are tiny you know!”
“Sorry, I can’t see you…”
“Your hand,” I looked at the back of my hand, a small person was standing on it. “Hi, I’m Thumbelina, I’m the chief’s daughter. Are you Mistress Victoria’s successor?”
“I guess so,” I couldn’t even see their faces.
“You will have to shrink to our size so you can visit her office,”
“Er…” I said nervously.
Shrink?
“You can’t,” she sighed, “repeat after me, higher than trees,”
“Higher than trees,”
“Smaller than one can see,”
“Smaller than one can see,”
“One born full and one tall,”
“One born full and one tall,”
“Will now be small.”
“Will now be small.” She jumped off my hand which was getting smaller, the ground became closer and before I knew it, the grasses were taller than I was.
“There you are,” I turned to the girl, the pretty blue haired person. “Hi, what’s your name?”
“Idalia,” I said with a little fright, looking at each of the little person. They all had coloured hairs and a mark in their faces that matched their hair colours.
“Come, you can’t stay here for long,” Thumbelina said hastily. She led the way, I quietly followed her while the others walked behind. We climbed over broken twigs and huge leaves. We finally got to a big rock, the rock was old and ugly.
“Come on,” the one I had come to know as Mimi said before she disappeared into the rock. Thumbelina held my hand and pulled me along with her into the rock. It was the second thing I was walking through that night.
“Oh…me…gosh,” I gasped slowly, it was like I was in a movie.
“Welcome to the enchanted office, you have to hurry before your time runs out, come on quick now,” Thumbelina urged. She led me to a rose. The pink rose spread it petals down, she pulled me into the flower which closed up on us. It was like an elevator made of petals.
The flower rose up, lifting us up to wherever it was leading to. The rose shook to an abrupt stop and slowly opened again. She jumped into the floor we ought to be, a wooden floorboard with small flower tables, books made of leaves and other tree materials and two tall firefly lamps.
“What exactly am I looking for?” I asked Thumbelina in hope that she knew what I ought to look for. She shrugged her shoulders.
“All I know is that you can get whatever here, all the books in the library are sealed and only the one you are meant to open will open, I’ll be downstairs.” She said with a beam. I walked to the biggest table with the lamps.
I pulled the chair back and sat down, then scooted closer. The biggest book on the table suddenly flipped open. The book turned for three seconds and stopped. The perfect drawing of four girls was on the page. They were dressed in old style, all smiling at each other as they shared their meal under a tree. The page flipped, another picture of them playing at a stream. The page turned again, this time they looked like they were singing under the oak tree. One of them was Victoria.
“Show me what I need to know, who is Victoria?” I asked the book. The page flipped open fast and stopped at another page. This time, it was written words. I drew the book closer and began reading.
“Dear journal, it’s me again. I’m afraid I have once again seen that odd dream, I am haunted by that dream. This time it is different, I didn’t just see the spirits in the hall, they saw me too and tried to kill me. Journal, I am afraid, I don’t know if I should speak to mother about my dream, she is more advance in her magic than I am, but I fear she would wave it off as mere imagination again. Oh journal, please tell me what to do.”
The page flip again to the next one.
“Oh journal! My dream has come to pass! The spirits in my dream has risen and are slaying students, ending their lives. I cannot handle this alone, my magic isn’t strong enough and mother still won’t listen to me. I tried to report this to the council of witches, but mother caught and bind me for weeks, I just got out. Journal, I am so confuse, I have to stop this before more gets hurt.”
The page flipped again.
“Journal, I finally told the girls, they were shocked at first but agreed to help me. Maybe together, we will have enough powers to put an end to it. We leave for the oak tree that brought us together, the spirit of the oak would know what to do… Hopefully that is.”
“Journal, we now know what to do, we also know who is doing this to the town. We are going to the school tomorrow to finish it up, I hope we would return safely. Journal, I also have a bad feeling about this, I still feel like something bad would happen but I’m not sure to who. I’m terrified, I hope we are sake. But I will take precaution and go to the tree myself, I need to make sure I am well prepared.”
I didn’t understand what I was reading, she had three friends. Is that why she picked us? To make us four?
“They are gone! They are all gone! How did this happen?! How did we end up like this?! All we did was save them and we have been punished for that. How am I her daughter? How did I end up with that witch as my mother! I will stop her, I will stop her before she completely ruins this town even if it claims my life!”
I tapped my nose, they died? I still needed to find out what was going on but the book wasn’t explaining well.
“Goddammit Victoria! Just tell me already! I can’t keep living like this!” I yelled, slamming my hands on the table. The book flipped to the final page.
“See through my eyes, see my memories. Pass through like a dream, know who I am.” Immediately the last word left my mouth, a light from the book zapped my eyes. I scre-med, pushing myself back. The chair tumbled over, throwing me down.
I gro-ned in pain, my head throbbing from the pain. I opened my eyes, I was in a quiet and dark forest. The trees were pure black, not a single leaf on the trees. I looked at myself on the ground, the sand was grey and filled with stones. I stood up and dusted my dress. I wonder how I could see with the darkness.
“There she is! Shoot her!” I looked at the set of men holding guns. They were looking at me with so much hate.
“Please, I didn’t do anything, please don’t…” I heard myself saying. One fired a bullet, I found myself disappearing far away. My feet took off, tears in my eyes and heart racing.
I ran and ran, they were going to shoot me, they were hot on my tail. I kept running blindly, crying convulsively. I couldn’t hear them anymore, I was far ahead of them. I slowed my pace down to calm my heart. I backed a tall bush, my hands on my chest as I breathe heavily.
“I’m safe, I just hope Victoria is safe,” the words were words of whosever memory I was viewing. “I bet I can conjure her up, summon Tori to make sure she is okay…” I heard a rustle in the bush behind me. I turned around to look but scre-med in panic.
Flying in the air towards me was a huge beast with lots of fur, one I had never seen before but I am sure those gigantic teeth could do me damage. I wanted to run, I could run, but I couldn’t move. It was as if I was momentarily stricken by fear, too stunned to move a muscle.
Move! You’ll get killed!
My inner shout was of no use, my voice was lost. More tears rolled down my cheeks, I saw death coming to me and I was too scared to do anything. Imagine standing and a lion jumping to bite your head off, imagine being in that position. That was the very one I was in.
The creature landed on me, it teeth sinking into my head as he rolled over with us. I felt immerse pain, my head was ripped off but I was still alive. All I did was scre-med inwardly and cried at the pain of my flesh being ripped out and devoured by the beast. I wanted it to stop, I wanted it all to end but it wasn’t ending, it wasn’t seizing. It was like being awake when having an operation, only worse. The beast ripped off my flesh piece by piece, gorged my flesh down to my bone.
“You’ll all pay.” A voice echoed in my head. I opened my eyes with a gasp, jumping up from the floorboard. I was drenched in sweat, I could still feel the pain allover my body.
“This is why I don’t want you to see what happened, to see it, you must feel it. Idalia, be patient.” Victoria’s voice echoed in my head. I was still crying, fear had seized my heart.
“Then why did you bring me here? Why?! To imprint a permanent scar!”
“Open the book to the middle, reach your hand for the cane and take it. Keep the cane safe my dear, you’ll need it.”
I stood up with quivering body, my heart still racing. The face of the beast remained at the front of my mind. I opened the book to the middle and saw the drawing of a cane. I dipped my hand into the book and felt the structure of the cane. I grabbed and pulled it out, ignoring the burning s-nsation. I dragged the cane out of the book, staggering back with the force I used in pulling it out. I fell on the floor, hitting my butt on the floor.
I raised the cane up and scrutinised it, there was a lot of strange writing and markings on it, but the one thing I understood was my name written boldly on the cane. This cane belonged to me.
