🌹CHAPTER 4🌹

👩‍🦱 MATILDA’S POV👩‍🦱
“Matilda stop it please! let bygone be bygone, I told you he’s apologized for what he did” Anita pleaded.

The last time I checked I didn’t ask you to follow me, I told you I was coming to thank him for what he did to you and that’s what I’m doing right now… I said while I continued dealing with him.

Thanks for your cooperation, I hope you learn how to be patient before judging people next time… I said to the fool I just finished beating and pulled Anita along with me. ‘Still you shouldn’t have done that, you should’ve just let us prove to him that we’ve got a good heart than he does’… she said and I shot her a glare in return.

Let’s just sleep for now, I’ve got gist for you, it’s about how my day went but I’ll have to tell you tomorrow… I said to her and she giggled. I tutted at her reaction upon hearing that I have gist for her, she can do anything because of listening to gist.

The following day was weekend, so it took us some time before going out to search for our daily bread, make sure you ret-rn on time, so we will go to the place on time. “Remember and early bird catches the worm” she said to me as we set to leave.

“Also remember that a patient dog eats the fattest bone” I said and she hit my shoulder playfully but that doesn’t mean I’ll return late… I added and we hugged each other before finally departing.

🌹ANITA’S POV🌹

I was busy pleading to a trader to give me the fruits she wanted to throw into the bin with the thought that it’s rotten when it seem perfectly fine to me, when I felt someone tap me. I turned only to see a guy who looks so much like my late brother, I almost hugged him, but not until I realized he can’t be the one because I was there when he was being carried into the grave.

Excuse me! How can I help you? I asked him trying to sniff back the tears I was trying to hold back, I hate myself for being the weak type.

My boss seeks your attention… he replied and I arched an eyebrow with a questioning look. And who is your boss? wait a sec, are you sure you’re not mistaken? I asked and he pointed at the car parked at a distance. “that’s the car she is in, why don’t you come with me to check who it is” he replied.

Of course I need to be careful as it’s so hærd for someone in a lexus jeep call on a poor lady like me… I said again.

Lady! You’re not gonna enter the car, no one mean any harm towards you here, I’m just running the errand I was being sent… he replied

Fine let’s go! I said but not without collecting the fruit I was begging for earlier. Can I ask you a question? I said to him as we walked. “Well! I’d answer any question you ask me except the one that pertains to who called you and why”… he replied

What’s your name? I asked Desmond he replied perfunctorily

Oh! That was too fast” I said disappointed. By any chance, did I offend you? Mean what have I done wrong, you answered in a way that shows you’re not interested in any conversation… I said.

I’m sorry about that, but us conversing while we walk to meet the boss is somehow disrespectful I wouldn’t want the boss to be pissed… he said and I nodded in assent.

“Good afternoon ma’am” I said to the woman I guess is the boss as I got to the car. Why does she look so familiar? I murmured softly

“Yeah I ought to” She replied and my eyes w¡dened. You heard that? I asked and she nodded.

I’m the woman you helped with the things I bought from a supermarket a long time ago. I’ve always thought of meeting you again because I have an offer for you which I’m not sure you’d accept. She replied

Oh! No wonder why you seem familiar to me. It’s really been a long time. What’s the offer you have for me? I asked hoping it’ll be a good one that’d suit me.

I need a house help urgently and you happen to be the first person that came to my mind. I don’t know if you’d like to be my house help, I’m sure it’d help you a little.

I seriously don’t like the fact that you beg before feeding yourself, so would you like to work for me? She requested and I almost jumped on her.

Sure, why won’t I, when it’s always been my prayer to leave this begging lifestyle. I replied with much excitement.

Ma’am I’d gladly accept the offer, but we’re two. I mean, I’ve got a friend who is like a sister to me and we’ve been hoping to have a better lifestyle.

I don’t know if you can find a job for her too. I’m sorry for making the request because I’m not in the position to do that, I just have to. I’m so sorry ma’am… I begged

I like and appreciate the fact that you’re considerate. I promise to help her find one soon though not now because I’ve got nothing right now… She replied

Alright thank you so much ma’am, so when do I start and how do I know where I’ll be working at? I asked again

You can follow me to my house now if you don’t mind and you can start immediately as well… She replied

Ma’am I can’t start now, I have to discuss it with my friend first. I can’t just leave her like that and besides I wasn’t prepared for this but I’d love to go with you now so I’ll have a view of my new workplace.. I said

“That won’t be a problem, hop in” she said

But ma’am, I’m not well dressed, I can just take a cab and follow you to your destination, I wouldn’t wanna stain your car… I said sincerely and she laughed.

Did you just say stain? If only you know how happy I am to have you accept my offer right now, you wouldn’t be saying this. She said and I entered reluctantly.

“Let’s go” she said to the driver and he obeyed immediately.

Today has really been a great day for me, I just don’t know why I keep having a good and positive feeling.

Hey! Someone called as I was sitting on a bench under a shade and I looked at the direction the voice came from.

I guess you’re the beggar who isn’t ashamed of yourself and instead you keep causing trouble for yourself. You beat my brother up and ran away like that.

Imma let you know today that you can’t be having everything in your favour at all times… He said and brought out his phone. I smirked and stood up to leave quietly to avoid trouble.

I dusted my dress and set to leave but he pulled me back instead, I’m here because of you, so where on earth do you think you’re going to!!! He barked angrily and I scoffed “Let go off me while I’m being nice” I said calmly and innocently.

And what if I don’t? He said, just then I sighted some guys walking towards our direction.

I grabbed him by the hair immediately and started giving him series of slaps making those coming stop walking.

I gestured for them to turn back, but some of them chose to be mules as they ran up to us.

Good evening, sirs! Please I need something to feed on, could you assist me with anything? I said as soon as they got to us as the beggar that I am. And they all stood transfixed

I know you all are aware that I’m a beggar, so please I just need something to feed on. Don’t mind this man right here, I seriously did nothing wrong, yet he’s trying to fight for his kid brother when he knows I have no one to fight for me.

Had I have anyone to take my side, I wouldn’t be on the street begging for alms.. I said putting on some acting and giving a fake tears.

They brought out their wallets and gave me some cash. “Thank you sirs” I said thankfully and sauntered away. “Fools” I made sure I mutter before leaving their presence.

I got home later and met Anita waiting for me outside the house with a wide grin on her face.

Yo! What’s up girl… I said cheerfully. How was your day? She asked.

Fine, and I’m sure yours was fine too. Your face says it all, tell me what the matter is. I said pulling out an old chair we got from a dumpsite a long time ago that we use as our chair.

Please have your sit and let’s talk… I said and she did.

“I got a job offer today” she said. Really!!! I scre-med and she nodded.

Wow! I’m so happy right now, I said and hugged her tight.

I’d be leaving you for the house I’ll be working in. was told I’ll be living in the house since I’ll be their house help. Trust me I asked for a job on your behalf and she promised to help me find one for you… She said and I could sense disappointment in her voice.

C’mon girl! You needn’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. Just make sure you don’t forget about me, you know I’ve always wanted the best for us both and here’s an opportunity for you to quit begging forever

Please make sure you do your work diligently, I wouldn’t want any misfortune for you anymore… I said and she did nothing but hug me.

I’ll miss us… She said with a hoarse voice. I will too, but we can’t be together forever. I’m sure something good Will definitely come my way soon… I said

I went to get something for us to eat and was returning when I saw a figure trailing behind me. I acted like I didn’t notice at first.

I continued walking and turned suddenly to see who the person was. He was so quick to hide himself but I saw what was so shocking about him.

I took to my heels immediately and noticed he was running too. Oh Lord! Why is this happening right now… I said as I kept running while he follow.

👩‍🦱 MATILDA’S POV👩‍🦱
I kept running and suddenly saw a guy on bike riding towards me and ran to his front which made him halt. “Help me please, I’m being chased” I begged he didn’t wanna stop at first but I snatched his helmet from him and hopped on the bike.

That’s the person get going already!!! I yelled and he zoomed off. I watched the guy as he hit his fist on the wall as he gro-ned out of frustration.

Thank you so much… I said to the guy as he parked at the front of our house.

Don’t mention it, just be careful make sure you stay alert always we don’t know if he’s trailed us already… He replied and I nodded

“Where have you been, why did you get me so worried” Anita said, hugging me as soon as she saw me arrive.

I only disengaged from the hug and went to a corner to calm my nerves. Why is this happening now, what do they want from me? How come he’s able to find me? I asked

What are you talking about and whom are you talking about? What happened exactly? Anita asked in a worried tone.

I’m scared Anita, he’s found me… I said

Make me understand and stop being afraid, everything’s gonna be fine.

I saw him, I saw my worst nightmare the one who caused misfortune in my life… I replied

Elon? She asked and i nodded.

Huh! What…why…how…when? She asked all at once

I don’t knowwww… I said and bursted into fresh tears

I’m so scared right now, I don’t even know if i should leave you or not. Come to think of it, that means they’ve been searching for you all these years.

What if he’s gotten enough information about you and your whereabout? That means we’re not safe here any longer… She said buh all I could do was cry as all the memories came flashing back to me.

Let’s just sleep for now, we’d think of a solution tomorrow. Stop shedding tears please or you’ll find yourself being sick tomorrow… She said as she laid the mat for me to lie on.

Oh! I guess he’s finally here… I said to Anita as we saw a car drive towards our direction while we await the driver sent to pick Anita up for her new place of work and living.

Relax! He might not be the one and besides, I didn’t see that car among the ones I saw in her compound the day I went to her house… She deadpanned and I laughed.

What if she’s gotten a new one,bid that probably wasn’t around at the time you went there… I replied

It seems you’re right, she said as she watched the car parked at our front.

I said it!!! I squeaked and she smiled

“Good afternoon” we both greeted and he replied. I hope you will take this opportunity as a great one and don’t misuse it, make sure you remain careful in that house, she has rude and arrogant children and trust me when I say they will do things that would frustrate you. Just always have it in mind that you won’t be there forever… the guy advised her before they leave finally.

Excuse me, why did you tell her all these you said just now? I asked. That’s because I’ve offended her at first and I decided to use the tip I just gave her as an apology… he replied and we both smiled. Woah! I’m sure you’d be a great guy. Please help me take care of her as your sister, I know it’s too much for me to ask and I’m in no position to ask for anything from someone like you, but I will forever be grateful to you if you can do that for me… I said rubbing his back.

“That won’t be a problem” he replied and they both entered the car… I stood at the s₱0t watching them leave with a teary eye, but I’ve got to hide because of Anita.

Now is the time to face the reality of life, I’ve got no partner anymore so I have to be more serious with my life… I thought as I entered the house staring at the space her belongings used to be. I was sitting wallowing in thought when I heard a voice that sounds like Ani’s. seriously? She hasn’t been away for five minutes and I’ve started having hallucination about her.

I can’t believe she’s away from me and I’m missing her right now. I’ve grown fond of her, we grew up together and have had each other’s back ever since we’ve known each other. I wonder how she’d feel for the very first time away from me. How would she cope with rich people?

Babe! I heard and looked up immediately. Anita‼️ I called and hugged her. Is that how much I’ve missed her? I thought inwardly. Why are you here? i asked

And what have you been thinking about? She replied. What do you mean by that, have you been standing here for a while? I asked again. “Of course I have” she replied and I sighed.

Why are you here? I asked again. Desmond wants to see you outside. she replied. “and why is that” I asked but she ignored me instead.
Hey! I was told you drove back because you wanted to see me… I said to him as soon as I got outside. “yeah! I totally forgot what I was told to give you” he said and brought out an envelope. This is yours, my boss told me to deliver it to you… he said and I collected it.

OMG! This is much… I said on seeing the money in the envelope. Please you two should send my regards to her. I said
We will, let’s get going already… He replied and they left leaving me sad once again.

I wasn’t expecting this, i gotta spend this money wisely… I said to myself.

Some days after, I decided to change my environment and also change my means of feeding. I started selling some veggies to people but my base is the main express road though not everyone buy from me which I don’t why because I tried my best to change my look.

I was returning back home one evening when I saw the only person that instill fear in me coming out directly from the store I sleep in.
I turned back immediately and started walking fast. I guess he recognised me immediately as I saw him following me.

I flung the basket I was carrying away and took to my heels immediately running to no where In particular.

I looked back and noticed that he’s no longer following me. I took that as an opportunity to rest as I thought about where to run to while p-nting heavily.

I stood up immediately as the idea of running to the guy I hid in his car the other day came to my mind.

Good evening, please open the gate for me, I need your help. Save me please… I begged the gatekeeper I once dealt with as soon as I got to the entrance.

Get lost and don’t ever show your face here again, you worthless maggot… He cussed at me

Of course he should since I once taught him a lesson. And him calling me a worthless piece of maggot is something I wouldn’t have hesitated in making him regret ever saying that to me, but that isn’t the case right now as I need his help.

I pleaded severally but he paid deaf ears to me. I didn’t give up though, instead I waited at the entrance hoping the real boss would be outside.

I waited until it was around 9:00pm when he returned. My heart leaped when I saw his car drive to the front of the gate. I ran to the car immediately and he came out of the car on sighting me.

What on earth are you doing here and what do you want from me again? He asked

I fell on my knees immediately and begged him to allow me spend the night in his house. I’ll explain to you tomorrow, please just let me stay for tonight… I begged buh he walked out on me instead and ordered his driver to drive the car into the compound while the gatekeeper lock the gate.

Why is life so unfair to me? I said and cried aloud.

After crying my heart out, I decided to face my fear. So is good up and left the vicinity. It was already dark at that time only the street lights shone brightness a little bit.

I walked till I got to the express road and started hunting for cab. I was still waiting when someone let out a hysterical laughter behind me making me flinch in fear.

Look who I’ve been searching for… He said and I felt weak instantly.

I’ve never been afraid of anyone in my entire life but I’m afraid of this very one… I thought and said some prayers inwardly.
