Episode 4
Trisha

Where is my life going? How did my life get complicated in just a day? I have a troublesome ex who won’t leave me alone then I have an evil mother in law and a child who yearns for a mother’s love. After that little encounter I had with Emily, I took her to spend the night at my father’s place. Dad was shocked to find out that Henry has a child he claimed he didn’t even know a thing. He wanted to call Mr. Tyson but I made him stop… I don’t want the evil mother in law blowing up in my face.

As for mom she tried to act surprised but her face sold her off, she said this was the excuse that I was supposed to bring up for this marriage to be cancelled. I just couldn’t believe my own mother would do that to me.

This week I was really trying to get along with this family. I have realized that the kids are so closed in and too reserved. Emily is like the only child who knows how to open her mouth. All the women are house wives and the man all work in the same company. Mrs. Tyson makes me cook and I have never really cooked in my mother’s house so I just Google recipes of food and try my best.

Even though they do different breakfasts they make one big lunch and supper. I have started picking up Emily at school and dropping her at home during my lunch hour. And right now she just made me get in a shop because she wants a chocolate. She picked every kind of chocolate she came across.
Me: baby isn’t that enough?

Emily: this one is for Troy, Kevin, Elizabeth and Rose.

Me: ok can we go now I am really running late.

Emily: mommy that man has been watching us for a long time.
I looked at where she was pointing and Zenzele was coming our way now he was just becoming annoyance now. I grabbed Emily’s hand and moved to the counter. He came and stood right beside me.
Zenzele: hey baby

Emily: why are you calling my mommy a baby?

Me: Emily… don’t talk to strangers okay.

Zenzele: mommy? That man has a child.

Me: I don’t see how that involves you.

Zenzele: so this is it… You are leaving me for a rich guy with a child

Me: at least he didn’t cheat on me… And this is my child.

Zenzele: your child do you even know how old you are?

Me: is it impossible for me to have a child Zenzele… I had her when I was 17 what’s your problem.
People turned their head to look at me, probably surprised by my statement.
Zenzele: you know it’s not like our relationsh¡p was intimate, we never did… (Pauses and looks around) because I respected you and your wishes that’s how much I love you. So I don’t really know why is it’s so hærd for you to give me another chance.

Me: I cannot believe this, is that why you cheated on me? you know what, you are right…you never took away my beauty and my dignity and I am glad I never gave them to you. I really don’t know why I am so hurt by the fact that you cheated on me… wait, maybe it’s because before then I didn’t see my future without you but now I realize that I have so much to live for.

Zenzele: I know that you love me and you will never stop loving me… This engagement is just for a while… You won’t be able to say I do to a man you don’t love so stop torturing yourself.

Me: you got it all wrong, I am going to marry him that’s the wh0le reason I am wearing this ring… Just watch me Zenzele by next week I will be Mrs. Tyson. Just watch me.
What the hell did I just do? Oh well i have nothing to lose right.

I left the shopping basket and picked up Emily then headed out. My heart was beating so fast. I was a little hurt by his words and I was afraid that I will never get over him. I was afraid that what he said might be true.

Emily: mommy my chocolates.

Me: we will get them next time.
I tried to drive home carefully but my mind just couldn’t focus on the road. I kept on telling myself that I have nothing to lose that I was doing this for Emily but how the hell was I going to deal with my mother in law.

The moment we entered Emily ran to mother in law who was busy roasting Chloe for burning up melon porridge. And I returned to work.

Dinner time was usual until Emily decided that she wants to sit on my laps and let me feed her. I kept on looking around at the family that was soon to be my family. And I honestly wanted to ask them why they decided to live as an extended family but this woman scared the shit out of me. Jeez Trisha if you are going to live in this family then you might as well start making your place comfortable. For how long are you going to keep silent?
Me: mother… why did you decide to live as an extended family?
Everyone looked at me, I don’t know if it was because I asked the question or because I spoke up since I am usually silent.
Mr. Tyson: it’s our culture.

Mrs. Tyson: besides the fact that it’s our culture this kind of environment is safe for my family I am able to make sure that my family doesn’t go the wrong way, I am able to instill discipline and as long as we are like this I know that none of my sons will be divorcing any time soon.

I swallowed hærd. Can someone tell me what the hell is wrong with this woman? Doesn’t she believe that his sons are able to take care of their own families? She has serious issues
Me: oh… well why aren’t the women here working?
That look again?
Mrs. Tyson: there is no reason for us to work… we have more than enough money?
The hell!
Me: I hope you don’t expect me to quit my job.

Mrs. Tyson: no one is going to force you… you are going to it all by yourself when the time is right.
What is that supposed mean?
Sam: and about your job… how the hell did you become a lawyer at such a young age.

Me: (smiles) I started school when I was 5 years old and skipped a couple of grades along the way then started at law school when I was sixteen. I graduated a month ago.
Everyone seemed impressed by that.
Sam: how did you get a job so fast and that too at one of the biggest law firms?

Me: you know how the world works right… money talks and I have an advantage because of who my dad is… don’t get me wrong, I am qualified for this job.

Sam: Henry… your wife is a beauty with brains.

Danny: why are so suddenly interested in this family Trisha… I mean you are normally quite.

Emily: mom is getting married next week
What the!
Mrs. Tyson: next week… really?

Me: uh… yes mother

Mrs. Tyson: why so fast?

Emily: because the man at the…. (I stuffed some potatoes in her mouth)

Me: (smiles) why should it be slow?
Henry
I looked at her as she replied mother and I wondered what she was doing, didn’t she say she doesn’t want to get married yet? Suddenly everyone looked alive. I looked at Emily, Trisha was busy stuffing her with potatoes, my poor child was helpless. She finally held Trisha’s hand and she spit out.
Emily: mommy I can’t breathe

Trisha: Emily you spit on your clothes.
She carried her and went to the upstairs, I followed her upstairs to Emily’s bedroom. Where she changed her into her sleepwear
Me: and then?

Trisha: (looks at me) I changed my mind.

Me: am I the reason why you changed your mind

Trisha: don’t fool yourself… honestly I don’t know why I decided to get married to you.

Emily: it’s because of the man at the shop.
Trisha held her breath and looked at Emily… the man at the shop. The look on Trisha’s face just said Emily was talking about Zenzele. This guy clearly has no intention of leaving her alone, I have to inform Trisha’s father.
Me: the man at the shop?

Emily: he was really stupid, he referred to mommy as a baby.

Trisha: Emily! Emily baby… go to sleep okay, you have school tomorrow.

Emily: ok mommy… I love you.

Trisha: I love you too
Trisha went out and I followed her.
Me: so you decided to get married because of Zenzele

Trisha it doesn’t matter or does it?

Me: do you understand what you are getting yourself into?

Trisha: a life time commitment…it’s not like your family worsh¡ps the devil or does anything dark, it’s just your terrible mother

Me: don’t get me wrong i want to get married to you but I don’t want you getting into this marriage because of the wrong reasons.

Trisha: yeah…
She left and my heart was jumping around with joy, I knew she was going ahead with this marriage for the wrong reasons but I am going change that. I got to my room and called Tracy.
Tracy: and to what do I deserve this call?

Me: you were right… I did nothing… Zenzele did all the work for me

Tracy: what do you mean? Did she agree to the marriage?

Me: yes

Tracy… (Silence)

Me: Tracy… are you there?

Tracy: you know it’s not right

Me: I will make it right

Tracy: do you know how much I love her…

Me: what is wrong are you having second thoughts?

Tracy: it doesn’t matter, now let me warn you… if you dare make her shed a tear I swear I will send you to your ancestors.

Me: trust me I know that.

Tracy: I am not joking, you do know that I still hate you.

Me: and I am still grateful to you

Tracy: okay friend, make sure you learn what a commitment is… oh I have to go I am receiving a call from her.
The story between me and Tracy is quite amusing. It all started one night at a bar. She was with Trisha and she was so drunk but Tracy was not drunk. Trisha she kept on dancing on tables and that’s when she caught my attention, she ended up passing out in her arms.

I offered to take them to her house. I actually wanted to take her to Trisha’s house but she led me to her house. The next day I wanted to check up on Trisha and she was gone but by the end of the week I was dating Tracy mainly because I found out about Trisha’s relationsh¡p, it was pathetic.

In a month’s time she broke things off and offered a friendsh¡p because she said she noticed that I have a crush on her best friend. She even offered to talk to her for me because apparently she hated Trisha’s boyfriend and well as I suspected Trisha refused even to meet me.
Stanley.
He entered my study followed by two guards and, motioned for them to leave. He was angry but I couldn’t care less. Just looking at him I wanted to eliminate him from this world because he was troubling my daughter. I received a call last night and I knew that moment that I had to do something about him but eliminating him was out of the question, Trisha would go crazy,
Zenzele: your daughter is not here to plead for me today so what are you going to do kill me?

Me: Kill you… for what?

Zenzele: I know you keep tabs on your daughter.

Me: don’t be ridiculous my daughter is a grown woman she can take care of herself.

Zenzele: so she can take care of herself but cannot choose a man for herself

Me: look at yourself and look at her… it’s ridiculous anyway I summoned you here because I want you to keep away from my daughter

Zenzele: or else I will have a bullet blowing my brains… right.

Me: you are too forward… I want you to gather yourself and make yourself as better person so that you won’t be an insult to the girl you are going to marry?

Zenzele: (laughs) and how exactly are you going to do that sir… give me a job?
I wonder what he found amusing. I pushed the brown envelope to him, he looked at it for a while and finally took it.
Zenzele: what is this?

Me: it contains the details of a person who is your mother or maybe not. But she is definitely the person who abandoned you.
His face tightened and he threw the envelope on my desk. He banged my desk with his hand yelling.
Zenzele: just who the f-ck do you think you are? some big shot. You think you can just control other people’s lives. I won’t let you do that to me… no I won’t.

Me: she is still alive?

Zenzele: if your guys didn’t take my gun I would kill you right now.

Me: satisfy yourself with your imaginations boy… but this brown envelope, you know you need it.
He stormed off my study. He was furious and that means this has got to him he is lucky I am doing this for him and this should keep him busy until my daughter is happily married. He should know that when it comes to my daughter I don’t take any risks. I called one of the guards and gave him the envelope so he can send it to his place. I know he won’t resist the urge to check out what is in,side the envelope.
Trisha
The “experience the marriage” week finally ended and I have never been so glad to be back at my house, in my bedroom with breakfast ready when I wake up. Mom was over the moon with the fact that I was getting married. And my baby girl literally refused to stay at the Tyson house. She told Mrs. Tyson that there is another granny who doesn’t scare people.
Dad: so how was your stay at the Tyson house?

Me: it was just fine.

Dad: so you are really going to leave me and get married

Me: it’s not like you don’t like it dad

Dad: (smiles) your friend is coming today… Tracy.
It’s weird how dad likes Tracy but she belongs to an average family.
Me: nice…

Emily: Grandpa… why do you wear glasses

Dad: because grandpa can’t see without glasses

Emily: is it because you are very old.
Dad laughed and I just looked at Emily. I mean my dad is not that old, he is like 42 years old. Since their last encounter dad has grown fond of this talkative girl. Just then there was a nock and Henry entered.
Dad: son in law… please join us for breakfast.

Henry: good morning father… I just came to check on my two favorite ladies. I want to take them out today.
Mom looked at me and smiled.
Me: good morning Henry. You can take Emily out, I have to go to prison and meet my psycho client and then appear in court today.

Mom: but it’s a Saturday

Henry: I can accompany you to work. I will pick Emily later. It will give her time to bond with your family.

Mom: of course… Trisha you have had enough breakfast go or you will be late.
In the car,
Henry: will this be the first time you appear in court

Me: not really, I often did when I was still studying and often they looked at me like I am a clueless kid. I was so tiny.

Henry: is that why you wear such big shoes

Me: I think so… Emily likes them.

Henry: I do too. I found her wearing them one day.

Me: (laughs) that kid though… she talks none stop

Henry: she listens to adults conversations

Me: and she comments when she isn’t supposed to… which often lends me in trouble with your mother.

Henry: she doesn’t know the difference between right wrong.

Me: when is her birthday?

Henry: next month

Me: next month? She will be five next month

Henry: is that surprising?

Me: no it’s just that she went to preschool so late. Why?

Henry: no she didn’t, we just moved her to different schools because of her behavior. The teachers complained that she was beating up other students or she would just cry in class asking for her mommy then refuses to go to school, I think that was caused by other students talking about their parents.

Me: oh… I am sorry

Henry: hey, it’s not your fault

Me: when will you tell her that I am not her real mother?

Henry: it’s not necessary… you will make a great mother.

Me: I found certain DVDs in Emily’s bedroom… what are doing making a child watch teenagers smooch around.

Henry: don’t worry, I cover her eyes,

Me: oh my… don’t you ever wonder why Emily sounds like a sixteen year old

Henry: I just concluded that her mother was a talker.

Me: gosh… does your mother know that Emily watches those

Henry: if she knew… I think Emily would be an orphan.
Did he just crack a joke…? I held my breath then burst out in laughter. It was really nice having to chat with him without me feeling hurt about Zenzele. The lobola negotiations were going to take place during Monday and don’t ask… I don’t know why they chose mid-week. Mr. Lokgaba and I met up with the client we were supposed to defend. Mr. Lokgaba wanted our client to plead guilty so that the judges can take it easier on him but this man was just adamant on the theory that he was innocent. And at he actually seemed so innocent before the judge. Something was wrong with him… I suggested that they should check him for mental illness. I mean the other party had a concrete proof that he killed his family.
Zenzele
I grew up without my parents and I hated the woman who gave birth to me just so she can throw me away. But growing up I had told myself that I will look for her and find the reason why she just had to throw me away… I was never really lucky with finding the lead until that man… until this envelope that I am looking at right now. I just despised the fact that it had to come to a man who I hated with all my heart if it wasn’t for him I would still be with my love right now. But on the other hand this might the only lead that I might get throughout my wh0le life. After swallowing my pride I eventually went to the address written on the paper.

I looked at the house. It wasn’t that big but surely the people who lived here were were not that poor. I knocked on the door and a beautiful young lady opened up… her eyes, my heart jumped she had Trisha’s eyes I decided to let it brush off, she smiled and greeted.
Her: how can I help you?

Me: my name is Zenzele can I see Mrs. Molatlhi please.

Her: mom! Someone is here to meet you.
An older version of the girl came to the door… all smiles.
Me: Mrs. Molatlhi

Her: yes how can I help you?

Me: my name is Zenzele.
Her smile disappeared. Anger took over her… she remembers me. no doubt
Her: what do you want?

Me: answers

Mrs. Molatlhi: get the hell out of my yard and stay the f-ck away from my family

Me: I have no interest in your family I just want to know why you gave birth to me and left me in the dumpster.

Mrs. Molatlhi: hei wena! Get the hell out of my yard, I am not your mother… I am not your mother. I don’t want to see you again. You want to destroy my family. Bad luck. Nxla! gaa! (slams the door on my face)

What the f-ck just happened!
