Unfulfilled Promises
season 2

Episode 6,7,8,9,10 &,11

Oleng got to her car and placed her head on
the steering wheel What was she going to do?
How could she have gotten herself into this
mess that had befallen her? She kept
wondering what Dave’s reaction would be at
the news of her pregnancy. Would he be joyous
or suspicious? In her misery, she didn’t put it
into consideration that Eric had done in oneafternoon what Dave hadn’t been able to do in
five years.
“O God, please help me. Please.” she prayed
frantically as she put the key in the ignition.

“Oleng,” Dave called his wife as she entered
their bedroom from the bathroom.
“Yes honey.” she answered weakly as she used
her towel to wipe her face.
“Come here.” He firmly said, making her
surprised at his tone.
She walked quietly to where he was lying on the
bed, reading a magazine He sat up and swung
his legs to the ground She sat by him looking exhausted.
“What’s wrong with you?” he enquired after she
sat down.
She inwardly shook but shrugged nonchalantly.
“Nothing. Why do you ask?”
“Because you’ve thrown up twice before me now yet you don’t look sick, only pale.” he
informed her.
Oleng held herself from scre-ming. Was Dave
suspecting her?
“I was sick but I didn’t want to inform you
because you’ve been so busy.”
“Really?” he asked in disbelief. “Have you taken
drugs?”
“Yes, the doctor said I’m reacting to the drugs.
It was a drug I hadn’t taken before.”
Dave smiled. “Oleng, don’t lie to me. Are you undergoing signs of pregnancy?”
His wife was so shocked her towel fell from her
lifeless hands. She however got a grip on
herself.
“Pregnancy? Why would you think that? Oh!
Because I threw up twice? Of course not.”
He stared at her and laid on the bed again to
resume his reading. Oleng was at her wits end.
“Would it be bad if I’m actually pregnant?” She
held her breath after saying it.
He didn’t bother to look at her but simply said,
“It depends.”
“It depends? It depends on what?” Cold fear
gripped her but he kept her quiet but she
pressed on. “Honey, tell me what you meant by
it depends?”
“Oleng!” he said in his no nonsense tone. “You
just said you’re not pregnant, so let it rest.”
“Okay.” she said, picked up her towel and
walked out of the room She felt his eyes on her
as she left.
Oleng went to the spare room and cried her
eyes out. She didn’t know what to do. She was
four months pregnant now. She had
successfully hidden her morning sickness from
him. She had been exceptionally glad when he
had traveled three weeks out of the one month
ago that she had found out about her dilemma.
But now that he was back, she had had to hide
her morning sickness from him though it was
almost impossible because she always threw up
in the mornings after he had gone to work.
Today being a Saturday, he hadn’t gone to work
and she had had no time to go to the bathroom
of the spare room as she usually did whenever
she wanted to throw up and he was around.
She had thought he was in the living room and
had nearly cried when she heard him come to
their room and she was still feeling nauseous.
She wiped away her tears. Tears wouldn’t solve
anything but she was so teary these days. She
assumed it was because of the baby. She
remembered when she had been pregnant the
first time. She had been so scared and now as
an adult, she was still scared Why was Eric
always the one to impregnate her?
“Because he’s your soul mate.” a tiny voice told
her.
“No!” she denied vehemently. “Eric, that
bastard, that liar. It can’t be.”
Oleng continued hiding her pregnancy from her
husband. She wanted it to be five months old
before telling him. She had no choice but to
pass off Eric’s child as his. She would live with
the guilt and deception all her life. No telling
what Dave would do if he found out he wasn’t
responsible. She wasn’t afraid for herself. She
was afraid for him. He might attempt to commit
suicide again and she didn’t want blood on her
hands. A thought had always crossed her mind.
What if the baby looked exactly like Eric? Dave
was dark in complexion but Eric was very fair in
coloring. What if the baby looked like a half-
caste like his or her father? She would be the
one to commit suicide then.
Despite the fact that she hid her pregnancy
symptoms very well, she couldn’t hide the
changes in her body. Her br-asts were fuller
and softer, her stomach was already protruding
slightly and she had gained weight. She was
grateful to Dave for not even making an
attempt to touch her. Just a sight of her
stomach would tell him all he needed to know.
She prayed the day would not come before she
told him her secret.
After throwing up in the guest room one
particular morning, she went to her room
thankful that Dave just left for the office. She
had to call Aunt Vien to ask her what to do
about her morning sickness. She was sick and
tired of it. She was almost five months pregnant
yet she was still throwing up. It hadn’t been like
this with the first one. She had told Aunt Vien
about the baby leaving her to assume it was for
Dave but she had pleaded with her not to call
Dave to congratulate him because she wanted
the pregnancy to go far so she wouldn’t
disappoint him if something happened to it.
“Aunt Vien! Thank God I got you. Aunt Vien, this
baby wants to kill me o! I’m tired of throwing
up. It wasn’t like this during my first pregnancy.
What do I do to stop it?” she sounded
exhausted.
Aunt Vien actually laughed before suggesting
things to her and asked if she had told her
husband about the baby.
“No Aunty. I haven’t told him. I’m waiting for it
to be five months old before telling him. I want
enough evidence for him to see though I’m
showing.” she lied. She felt bad for doing such
to such a nice person. Her aunt advised her to
tell him soon. “I will. Thank you very much. I’ve
wanted a baby for so long and now that I’m
pregnant, he or she wants to kill me first.” she
chuckled and her aunt laughed again.
She ended the call feeling better. She sincerely
missed her aunt. She would have told her what
to do in such a situation. She planned telling
her everything when she visited at the birth of
the baby as she had promised.
“So you’re really pregnant.” Dave said as a
matter of fact as he came out of the bathroom
with arms akimbo.
Oleng nearly fainted on the bed. “Dave! I…I
thought you had gone to the office.”
“You thought wrong. I came back to ease myself
and I’m glad I did. You bitch! You’re actually
pregnant yet you’ve been lying to me and
hiding it from me. I noticed the symptoms but
kept quiet waiting for you to tell me Do you
think I’m blind?” Dave yelled and advanced
towards her
.
Oleng immediately got up and moved
backwards. “Dave, it’s not what you think. I…I
wanted…to tell you…but… but I wanted it to be
showing first so…so that you won’t doubt me.”
she stammered.
“You filthy liar!” he scre-med and slapped her
hærd across the face She fell to the ground sobbing and holding her sore cheek. She was in
shock. Dave had hit her?
“Who’s responsible?” He looked murderous.
“What?” she was stunned.
“I said who’s responsible for that bastard you’re
carrying?” he advanced towards her again and
she crawled backwards.
“We’ve been hoping for a child for the past five
years now and now that I’m pregnant, you’re
asking me who’s responsible?” She tried to put
on a bold face.
“Don’t you dare lie to me I know I’m not
responsible for that bastard. Now tell me who
is responsible before I kill you.” he threatened
and she shook inwardly.
“Dave please.” she pleaded desperately.
“Please what? Please what? I thought you were
an angel yet you could stab me in the back like
this. How dare you? Who’s responsible, you
bitch?” he yelled.
“Why are you so bent on believing that you are
not responsible?” she retorted.
“Because I’m sterile!”(infertility Of a man to Reproduce) he yelled.
There was silence for some seconds

Episode 7
“What!” She was scandalized.
“I can’t father your child or any other for that matter Why do you think you haven’t gotten
pregnant for the past five years? I cannot
father a child That’s why I know I’m not
responsible for that bastard Now who is
responsible?”
Oleng was dumbstruck Dave was sterile So all the tears and worry were for nothing She had
always called herself barren for nothing Eric’s child hadn’t destroyed her womb as she had
thought. Her so-called angel of a husband had
been deceiving her for five years, always telling
her not to worry; they would have their own child. He had been lying, probably laughing at
her for being such a gullible fool. But Dr. Ekang,
their gynecologist had carried out tests on him
and said he was okay. How could she have
been so foolish? Ekang was Dave’s good friend.
Dave had probably told him to say so No
wonder he had refused to go for tests from other doctors maintaining that Ekang had
schooled abroad and so was better than other
doctors. She had been such a fool. She forgot
her predicament and stared at him with so
much pain in her eyes.
“Why?”
Dave didn’t reply. He was sorry for his outburst.
He hadn’t wanted her to find out like that but he had been too angry to think.
“Why what?”
“Why all the lies? Why the deceit? You know I’ve
worried and wept for five miserable years yet
you kept it a secret from me. You made me go
through such pains always thinking I was the
barren one,” Tears rolled down her eyes as she
looked up at him. “You kept quiet even when
your family tormented me. Why?…Oh! I get it.
No wonder they stopped disturbing me. You
told them the truth, didn’t you? You told them
yet you could not tell me who was directly
concerned. I’ve always felt like a failure before
you not knowing you are the failure.”
“How dare you?” he raved. “Who are you to
judge me? Are you any better? Didn’t I
constantly suggest we adopt a child? Because I
knew you would never have one by me but I
didn’t know you were so desperate to the
extent you went to commit adultery. My family
was right. I thought I married someone worthy.
I didn’t know I married a wh-re. For the last
time, who is responsible?” he shouted.
“Eric!” she scre-med in anger also.
“Eric.” he uttered in almost a whisper and
crashed on the bed, bewildered. “My God! I knew it. I knew it. I saw the looks that passed
between both of you that day in this house. I
didn’t know the moment I had my back turned,
both of you would jump on each other like
ravenous hyenas.” he threw at his sobbing wife.
“There I thought,” he continued. “I had found
an angel. The right person who would keep my
secret forever. The one person who wouldn’t
complain about my inadequacies in bed but I was dead wrong. When for five years with me
you never for once complained about my
boring, unsatisfactory performance in bed or my lack of enthusiasm to make love, I loved
you more. Little did I know that you would
jump on your ex-lover to relive the passion you
both once shared yesteryears.” he bitterly told
her.
“It wasn’t like that.” she sobbed.
“It wasn’t like what? Did he rape you?” He
rounded on her in anger. “Did he?” he
prompted when she kept him quiet.
“No.” She shook her head.
“So you did it willingly. Where was the bastard
conceived?…No. No. No. Don’t tell me you
made love here. On our matrimonial bed?” he
enquired in disbelief.
“No.”
“Where then?”
“At his house.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Really? So
you were so hot for him you went to his
house?”
She vigorously shook her head. “It’s not what
you think?”
“Really? So he came to your office, kidnapped
you to his house and put a gun to your head
threatening to blow it sky high if you didn’t
make love to him. Come on, Oleng, don’t be
ridiculous.”
“No. I went to his house to warn him to stay off
you, to leave us alone. He said annoying things
to me and I slapped him. He grabbed me and
started k-ssing me. Then…..” she trailed off and
lowered her eyes.
“Then you went to the moon with him I dare say you told him at that euphoric moment that
we hadn’t made love in ages and I was lousy in
bed.”
“Of course not. I would never discuss such with
him or anyone, not even Aunt Vien.”
“Really?” he snickered. “Such loyalty I can do without. How many times did you do it?”
“Once. I made the mistake only once. When I
woke up, I…” she was interrupted.
“When you woke up? So you slept in his arms
after the rigorous exercise.” he sneered at her
which made her angry.
“I don’t have to explain myself to you after the
way you have deceived me all these years.” she
spat.
He got up and held her roughly by the arm. “I’ll
speak to you anyhow I like and you will tell me
all I need to know. If it were back in those days,
you would have been stoned to death by now.
An adulteress is normally sentenced to death before proven guilty. You should be lucky I’m
interrogating you before passing judgment.”
“You have no right whatsoever to pass
judgment on me after what you did. I agree
that I’m guilty but I didn’t do it intentionally. I
never knew I was going to sleep with Eric and
get pregnant but you; you deliberately hid your
sterility from me. That’s sheer wickedness.”
“Oh! You think I’m wicked, ehn? Well, you
haven’t seen anything yet. By the time I’m
through with you, you’ll wish you’d never set
eyes on Eric.” He pushed her away roughly and
stalked out of the room leaving his wife to
weep profusely.
