Chapter 5 :- MONEY, the root of all evil

🌹 Writer’s POV 🌹

Smiling and sitting alone in the comfort of his air-conditioned home, Justice Udozie sighs satisfactorily as he reads the Sunday times. As the fat judge was busy reading his newspaper, his young lovely wife Anna appears into the living room, approaches him, collects his newspaper and sits on his laps stroking his chin.

Anna ➡ Hello darling.
.

Udozie ➡ Annabelle, what is it you want?
.

Anna ➡ What every wife wants! Her husband’s attention.
.

Udozie ➡ Honey, you know I haven’t been neglecting you.
.

Anna ➡ I know but its not enough and besides our sex life isn’t as active as it used to be.
.

Udozie ➡ Come on woman. Times are different now. Our kids are here and you can’t expect us to doing that rampantly.
.

Anna ➡ Which is why I want us to go to a hotel. Jesus Udozie, where’s the man I married?
.

Udozie ➡ Okay, fine. Find a hotel for us and fix a date for us.
.

Anna ➡ Gladly.

Udozie ➡ Can I have my paper now?
.

Anna ➡ No, you have visitors.
.

Udozie ➡ Visitors! Why didn’t you say so?
.

Anna. ➡ Come on downstairs to tend to our guest, they’re waiting in the living room.

Udozie ➡ Anyone we know?
.

Anna ➡ Yes just one. It’s Attorney Desmond and some other two lovely ladies.

Udozie ➡ I’ll be down shortly.

Anna ➡ Okay.

Moments later, Udozie comes downstairs where he meets Desmond, Judith and her sister who stood up and exchange pleasantries with him. After that, Udozie takes his seat and then listens to why his guests were here.

Udozie ➡ Barrister Desmond, young ladies, you’re welcome to my home.
.

Desmond ➡ Thank you sir for giving us your time. We won’t take much of your time.
.

Udozie ➡ Alright then, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?
.

Desmond ➡ Well sir, we’re here to talk to you about a certain case in which you’ll be hearing.
.

Udozie ➡ Which case is that?
.

Desmond ➡ The recent murder case sir. The one that the husband brutally murdered his wife.
.

Udozie ➡ Well, we don’t know that until I’ve seen and heard the facts represented in court.
.

Desmond ➡ That’s why we’re here sir.
.

Denise ➡ Sir if I may?.. My name’s Judith and the deceased is my sister. I was there when I saw her husband standing over her.
.

Udozie ➡ That’s horrible. Did you see him kill her or did you see him with the murder weapon?
.

Denise ➡ No sir but he was standing over her.
.

Udozie ➡ Young lady, that’s not how it works. There must be evidence. Your words mean nothing in court, what matters is evidence and if this case has none then, there won’t be a trial.

Judith ➡ Surely sir there must be something you can do.
.

Udozie ➡ I’m afraid not. You’ll just have to wait until the court proceedings.
.

Judith ➡ Sir, we can not allow this bastard to walk free. He killed my sister, I’m sure of it. Which is why my sister and I came with this.
.

In that moment, Judith lifts a briefcase from her side, drops it on the table and opens it before Udozie to see. Inside the briefcase lies new bundles of crispy 1000 notes all neatly arranged. Udozie who had gasped by the sight of the money, remained silent and began to exchanges glances with his guests and the briefcase before him.

Udozie ➡ What’s the meaning of this?

Judith ➡ This here is 1.5 million which will be yours right now if you can help us out with a small favor.

Udozie ➡ Which is?
.

Judith ➡ To handle the case in our favor.
.

Udozie ➡ (chuckles) Desmond, are you aware of this?
.

Desmond ➡ Yes sir.
.

Udozie ➡ Wow, I must say that I am disappointed but still I can’t say no.
.

Judith ➡ That means you agree.
.

Udozie ➡ I will make sure I grant the judgment in your favor, that is if you have evidence on the suspect. Without that, I can not do anything.

Judith ➡ But you said..

Udozie ➡ Young lady, listen to me. The court is a civilized and formal place. I can’t just hand the outcome of the case just like that. It doesn’t work. I said I will make sure I grant the final judgment in your favor if you have evidence. I don’t care how you get it cause it’s your problem not mine. My own is to judge. Desmond as a lawyer you should be tackling this or talk to the detectives handling the case.

Judith ➡ Looks like there’s no need to give you this money then.
.

Udozie ➡ Oh no. This money stays here with me. You insulted my dignity by bribing me and you think you’re just going to walk out of here like that. The money stays.

Denise ➡ This is absurd.
.

Udozie ➡ Take the money and face the consequences. Look around, I can have small cameras planted in the house. If I show the video of your trying to bribe me a job, the three of you will be finished. So do the smart thing and walk out of my house.

Judith ➡ This isn’t right.
.

Udozie ➡ So’s your proposal but I will hold my own end of the bargain. The rest is up to you. Have a good evening.

Feeling detected by this outcome, Judith and Denise take their leave with Desmond following behind them and as soon as they were gone, Udozie bursts into tremendous laughter on his couch. His wife who hears him laughing so hard appears in the living to see what was making him laugh so much.

Anna ➡ My love what’s making you… JESUS CHRIST!!!

Udozie ➡ Relax honey, just relax.
.

Anna ➡ Is that what I think it is?
.

Udozie ➡ You better believe it. That’s 1.5 million you’re staring at.
.

Anna ➡ Let me guess, is it a bribe?
.

Udozie ➡ It’s a bribe. Those ladies are nothing but idiots. What do they take me for?
.

Anna ➡ But you accepted it.
.

Udozie ➡ Why not? I had them what happens if they bribe the wrong people.
.

Anna ➡ Is this about the murder case?
.

Udozie ➡ Yes it is. Those two women were the deceased sisters. They want me to bring down the hammer on the husband.
.

Anna ➡ That’s not right. There has to be a trial first.
.

Udozie ➡ That’s what I told them but they wouldn’t listen.

Anna ➡ So Desmond brought them here?
.

Udozie ➡ The idiot! I’ve never felt so insulted in my life.
.

Anna ➡ It’s not like you’ve never taken a bribe before.
.

Udozie ➡ You know very well, that was different. I had no choice.
.

Anna ➡ It doesn’t matter now. So what are you going to do with all this?
.

Udozie ➡ Do you really have to ask me that?
.

Meanwhile here out Udozie’s house, Judith and Denise bitterly lash out at Desmond over their loss of cash to the judge. Desmond however didn’t take it lightly with them by defending himself.

Judith ➡ This isn’t what you promised us. You said that this judge would roll with us.
.

Denise ➡ If we had know we could have talked to the detective in the first place. This is all your fault.
.

Desmond ➡ Hey! The judge said he would help us if we have evidence. He never said anything about not helping out. All we have to do now is to stick the suspect with something that will get him convicted.
.

Denise ➡ And how do you propose we do that?
.

Desmond ➡ Let’s find the detective and make him an offer we can’t refuse.

🌹 KEVIN 🌹

Days has passed since I was locked up and through out I haven’t had a decent meal or sleep. Besides how can I sleep when I’m being charged with a crime I didn’t commit? Damn you Antonia, even after your death, I’m still suffering because of you. I hope you burn deep in the depths of hell. Why did fate ever align me with such a woman? After all I’ve given and sacrificed for her, why did she stab me like this in the back. I wish I had been the one behind her demise, at least I won’t feel bad even if I was arrested. Presently as I was sitting in my cell, one of the police officers came and made an unexpected announcement.

Officer ➡ Hey, you get visitor. Get ready.
.

Honestly, I was expecting to see my lawyer after I left my cell but to my surprise it was my mom. She looked pretty nice but was a little bit sad. As soon as I got to her place, she gave me a warm hug with last for couple of minutes before letting me go. After that, we both sat and began to discuss and the first word that came out of her mouth was a common thing that every mothers says.

Kevin ➡ Hello Mama.
.

Angela ➡ I told you so. I told you but you didn’t listen. Now look at what is happening.
.

Kevin ➡ I’m sorry mama.
.

Angela ➡ I knew that lady wasn’t to be trusted. Don’t worry my son, I will everything in my power to get you out. I know you didn’t kill that bitch, there’s no way you could have done that. I know you well enough that you can’t even hurt a fly.

Kevin ➡ Thanks mom
.

Angela ➡ Don’t thank me yet not until I’ve gotten you out of this place. I’m sure you’ve met your lawyer.

Kevin ➡ She looks like a model than a lawyer.
.

Angela ➡ Believe me, she’s a good one. We’re doing everything we can to get you out.

Kevin ➡ Where about the kids?
.

Angela ➡ What kids? Those are not your kids anymore. They’re back to their mother’s place.

Kevin ➡ They don’t deserve this.
.

Angela ➡ It’s harsh but that’s on their mother. You no longer have to concern yourself with them any longer.

Kevin ➡ But I have a bond with them.
.

Angela ➡ No. You had a bond with another man’s children. I will not allow you to see them ever again. They’re nothing but an embarrassment to you and your family.

Kevin ➡ They can’t be dragged into this.
.

Angela ➡ How can you be thinking about those kids right now? They might not have the same feelings for you not after what everything thinks you did.
.

Kevin ➡ So you’re saying I should forget about them.
.

Angela ➡ You should. I bet they have too.
.

Shortly after my mom said that, My father in-law and my supposed kids appeared into the station as well. The atmosphere was intense and uncomfortable for everyone. For the first time in my life, I felt nervous to face my supposed kids. They looked at me squarely without blinking their eye. I began to wonder what they thought about me, I wouldn’t be surprised if my in-laws brainwashed them to despise me. My mom who had sensed the presence of my father in-law and her former grand kids, a long vicious hiss escaped her lips indicating her loathing for them.
I couldn’t blame her not after what that bitch Antonia did. It’s not easy to accept the fact that the kids you once thought to be your grandchild were not yours. I remember the joy mom felt as three of these kids came into the world, she gave them the best gifts money could buy. Her love for them was strong until now.

Angela ➡ Mr. Man, better take those kids away from here. Your presence is not welcome here.

Jonathan ➡ Don’t you dare raise your voice at me, woman. My business here has nothing to do with you.

Angela ➡ As long as it involves my son, it is. I always knew your whore of a daughter is not a fit for my son. I hope she burns deep in the depths of hell.

Jonathan ➡ Your son will soon join her.
.

Angela ➡ My son didn’t kill your daughter. Maybe it was one of her regular lovers. Whatever it takes, my son will not remain here. It is you that will bear this humiliating shame forever. With the reputation that stupid daughter of yours has built, it will be had for your other daughters to get married.

Kevin ➡ Mom, that’s enough.
.

Tony ➡ Dad, is it true that you killed mom?
.

The question made my body shiver with shock. I couldn’t help but wonder what my in-laws told this boy whom was once a son to me. I was even more surprised about the boy’s sudden boldness. Why would he ever think that I would do something like this after all I’ve done for him. In that moment, I glared at Tony viciously with rage burning inside me. The boy trembled with fear and looked away as he saw my face but I wasn’t going to allow him to leave not until I answered his question.

Kevin ➡ Tony, I did not kill your mother. Whatever it is you kids heard about me is a lie.
.

Angela ➡ Don’t bother yourself Kevin, their minds have been poisoned against you. Justice will prevail Mr. Jonathan and once all is said and done, I’ll have the last laugh. Your shameless daughter has ruined our family name with her loose ways and your family will be the one to suffer greatly for it. If you ever come to see my son again, you’ll regret it. Mark my words. Let us all meet at court.

After that, the police were attracted by the noise and everyone was ordered to leave. Amidst all that commotion, I was taken back to my cell and all was quiet once again.

🌹 ANDREW 🌹

Solving a case such as this should be pretty easy cause everything is so obvious, the husband finds out that his wife is cheating, he loses control and kill her, the end! But no, something was missing, something I still haven’t figured out.
For starters, the deceased has only one lover who unfortunately is also dead but could it be that there was someone else out there she was having an affair with, someone that nobody knows about. Perhaps that person might have been the one behind her demise but this wouldn’t fly. Another possible scenario that could have played out was Kevin hiring an assassin to kill his wife but that didn’t happen, his phone was thoroughly checked and there was nothing relating to that. Another weird thing was the absence of any kind of evidence that showed Kevin is the killer not even a print. Based on the investigations I’ve gathered on Kevin, he doesn’t have the smarts to pull off something like this. Committing a crime without leaving any kind of evidence is a job of an extremely smart crook and Kevin is no crook.

Based on what I’ve gathered Kevin is innocent and without evidence, there won’t be a trial but the fact still remains that murder has been committed. Somewhere out there, there’s someone playing chess on this whole case. My first suspect is ofcourse Kevin’s Ex Kate cause her past with her him and his deceased wife shows that she could be the culprit but still who’s sending the pictures?
If Kate is the culprit and she’s besides the pictures leaking , why would she bother to kill Kevin’s wife when exposing her alone guarantees her place as his new wife?
Something doesn’t add up cause it just doesn’t make sense. Kate might be my top suspect but there’s definitely another player out there who has a part in this murder. Whoever it is, it looks like he/she has a massive grudge of Kevin’s late wife. Presently, here I was in my car driving alone wondering about the case in my head. A case like this would have been dropped but there’s more to it than it meets the eye. After driving around for a while, I decided to stop by at Kate’s house to interrogate her. Minutes later, I arrived at Kate’s home and after alighting from my car, I went straight and knocked at her door.
As I waited by the door, I heard soft music being played inside the house. It was quite captivating honestly but nothing captivated me more than the delicious aroma of food coming from inside the house. In that moment, my stomach grumbled hard after perceiving the aroma. It’s been a long hard day and I was exhausted and tired. Minutes after my first knock, I gave another one but this time it was harder and louder than the first one. Shortly after that, I heard footsteps and then Kate’s voice asking who was it. I answered her and she hesitated for a while before opening the door and as soon as she did, I was blown away by her appearance.

Kate ➡ Detective! What a pleasant surprise.

Andrew ➡ Uh. Good evening.
.

Kate ➡ How may I help you?
.

Andrew ➡ I’m just here to ask a few questions. That’s all.
.

Kate ➡ (sighs) Alright but I hope you won’t take long.
.

Andrew ➡ That depends on how truthfully you answer my questions? Can I came in?
.

Kate ➡ Sure.
.

Some women just don’t know how to reduce the heat. Kate’s outfit definitely turned me on, It was difficult to control myself in front of her. Her outfit consists of a tight black leggings and a white T-shirt which showed her lovely physique and braless breasts. They might be a little bit saggy but Kate’s milk jugs were definitely arousing and her pointed nipples didn’t help matters either. After allowing me into her home, Kate walked in a seductive manner heading to her kitchen. It was difficult for me to take my eyes off her bouncing but cheeks as she walked.
Some guys just have all the luck. That Kevin sure has a good taste in women. With his wife now out of the picture, I’m pretty sure Kate would jump on him and I’m pretty sure things are going to work out between the two of them. After taking my seat, Kate returned moments later with two bottles of coke and a plate filled with rice, beans laced with sweet delicious sweet mashed with multiple meat. She sat across me and handed me one bottle of coke before digging into her scrumptious meal.

Kate ➡ So Detective, what is it you want to ask me about?
