✍️ CHAPTER TITLE ✍️: TALKING ABOUT “US” ____ Part 1

With Damien’s eyes on her, there was nothing she could say even after hearing what Annabel said. Her body was shaking against her wish and her mouth felt suddenly heavy to even move, not to talk about uttering a single word.

Damien stood still, with his two hands perfectly kept in his pockets, as he watched all of the butler’s movements.

Damien had seen her expression when Annabel told her the reason why they were there, and it was shocking to see her gaze admitting to it.

The butler didn’t dispute what Annabel told as be a lie, and that was a fuss that made Damien’s mouth quiet. For the first time after a long time, Damien didn’t know what to say.

The more he stared at the butler, the more he became confused. How did she do it? Coming here in disguise and she has spent three fucking months living with him.

Damien had allowed the butler to touch him severely while thinking that she was a man. No wonder her massages drew him closer to her. It was all because of her true identity. She was a woman. The first woman to be close to him after many years that he had stayed away from those creatures.

The difference which Damien still doesn’t want to admit was vividly there. Damien always wants more from the butler whenever he massages his head. Missing the butler’s touch on his body, and craving to get more.

Damien had wondered how the butler could possess such humanity, that makes her loving to everyone. Damien never had reasons to complain about the butler, if his cold heart is left aside.

Everything the butler had been through here, how could a princess willingly go through that, just because of love? Damien wondered.

Didn’t she think about what he would do when he found out? What sort of nuisance act was that? She put herself at Damien’s risk willingly. Leaving and breeding with him pretence.

“Didn’t you think about what I would do to you when I found out?” Damien’s rigid voice asked. That was the first word he said, since he stepped in the room. His eyes didn’t leave the butler who looked like she would soon pass out.

Vera’s head raised from the ground to his face. How could what she isn’t planning to do ruin what she’s planning? She had begged Annabel not to ever tell Damien, why did she do that and leave her in this dilemma?

Vera tried speaking, but she couldn’t. It was like her mouth was paused, and there was no how she could force word out of it.

“Damien?” Annabel seeing them being in awkward state called and left where she was standing behind Damien, to meet Vera who was almost shedding tears.

Damien’s eyes left Vera’s face and went to Annabel’s, who was hugging the butler, with tears still rolling down her cheeks.

“You’re making her scared,” she muttered to Damien angrily. She knew Vera was upset with her, but the last thing she would do was leave her to pay the price for the mistake she caused.

Damien furrowed his brows at Annabel like she just mentioned something stupid. He hasn’t even done or said anything to the butler.

How Damien wanted to feel about the matter isn’t how he was feeling right now. He wanted to shout and show the butler the devil’s side of him, but somehow he couldn’t.

When Damien looks at the butler, all he sees is her recent good acts. How she spoke to him when he was grieving. How she didn’t judge him for what others judged him for.

How the butler took care of his sister. How the butler spoke tangible words that would help him trace his steps back to goodness. He couldn’t see himself doing anything that would hurt the butler, and this is what is making him angry right now. Why was he feeling the restriction to vent out his annoyance? Or maybe he isn’t even angry about what happened.

“Annabel I didn’t do anything to him-her,” Damien corrected while staring at Annabel sharply.

“I have not touch her. Neither have I started shouting. I just need her to explain everything to me by him- herself,” Damien stated calmly.

Annabel stared up to meet Vera’s teary eyes. Vera was not sniffing and if you didn’t look at her face, you wouldn’t know that she had started crying.

Vera felt tired for putting herself in such a situation. Why did she even do this? How could it have been heard that a princess trailed after love while acting like a slave? It’s a stupid act. A stupid act that she effortlessly did out of love.

“Please tell him the truth,” Annabel tugged her pyjamas trouser as she said. Her hands were still wrapped around Vera. Annabel wanted to console her, and that was why she couldn’t see herself being scared of Damien presently. Damien had promise not to hurt her again; she was sure that he wouldn’t do anything to hurt her now.

“What do you call her name again?” Damien asked, and Annabel knew that the question was for her answer.

“Vera,” Annabel quickly said. Her palm was busy wiping the tears from Vera’s eyes. One part of Damien softens, merely by the view of Annabel doing that. No one needs to tell him again, Annabel’s affection for the butler is beyond what he could guess or think about.

“Vera?” Damien called in a sharp voice. Slowly, Vera raised her eyes and looked at him helplessly again.

“Tell me everything and why you deceived me,” Damien urged. His voice was not as harsh as she thought it would be. His words sounded like he was pleading with her to speak to him.

Seeing Annabel nodding her head, while assuring her to speak, Vera let out a tear before saying, “I-I’m sorry for what I did,”

“Okay. Now tell me the reason for doing everything,” Damien’s eyes didn’t leave her. They stared at her pretty face. Once in a while, Damien would try to view the butler’s masculine face on her presently, but it was hard to see that. She truly resembles a pretty lady, and he couldn’t dispute the fact that she was beautiful and worth being called a princess.

Maybe because he has now found out the truth, and all the memories that are related to lies became blurry.

“I’m a princess,” Vera said, for her words to get interrupted by him. “Annabel told me that,”

“I came here in disguise just because—” her voice trailed off. Vera was scared to complete the sentence.

Annabel’s hand came right on her shoulder, and that gave her the boldness to keep on speaking. “I’ve always loved you, Damien,” taking away the normality between them, as she called Damien by his name.

Damien didn’t react to what the butler did. He acted normal like he didn’t mind hearing that from her.

“I wanted to be close to you, but you wouldn’t let me speak with you. I didn’t have another choice than to do this,” She paused to see him gesturing for her with his head, to continue speaking.

“I love you and I’ve always done that. That was the reason why I didn’t think about the rumors concerning your cold attitude before coming here,” Damien felt a thumb in his heart.

“I was scared about everything at first. I didn’t plan how I would face you when you finally find out the truth, but what I thought you were, isn’t what I encountered after living with you,” Vera bit her lips, but not to the point of allowing it to bled again.

“Didn’t you know that I could kill you if I find out?” Damien asked. That was the same question that was constantly coming that to his mind. Didn’t the princess think for once that she was trailing after death?

“I knew and was scared. I was helpless because my love for you didn’t let me think about it then,” Vera simply replied.

As her back was resting against the wardrobe, she uses her right hand to hold Annabel on her back. Vera knew Annabel must be feeling sober, and she didn’t want her to be sad over her incapability.

Annabel didn’t do anything wrong. She has only helped Vera to say what she found difficult to say. If it was left to be for Vera, she wouldn’t have told Damien the truth before leaving.

Vera would have left them while they might never find out the truth, and she may never tell him because of fear.

“Why didn’t you tell me you’re a woman when I wished it in your presence? If you were here for my love, was that not the right time to claim it?” Damien’s words dropped after another. The way he could keep up with this side of him surprised him.

He wondered why he hadn’t yelled at the butler yet. It was just yesterday that he made up his mind to turn a new leave, but something to feast his anger on was here, but he could not do anything other than ask questions.

“How was I supposed to tell you?” Vera asked and she didn’t miss the relentless expression that appeared suddenly on his face before it disappeared like it was never there.

“The difficulty to speak then was too much for me. I wanted to be with you, but I also feared you despising me after I told you the truth,” Vera let go of the expression she saw from him and started speaking.

“I would only act the way I was supposed to after finding out. Were you expecting me to throw a celebration after finding out that you were not what I thought you were?” Damien questioned instantly, not allowing the butler get away with an excuse.

“Not at all, Master Damien,” Vera returned the normality and Damien frowned at the hearing of that. Was it necessary after he found out everything already? There was no need for that again.

“I knew such a celebration wouldn’t be thrown for me. What I was scared of is what I am seeing in your eyes right now; disappointment and anger. Maybe I should have told you earlier and face it same then,” Vera sighed sadly after she finished saying.

“Humm…” Damien hummed. His two eyes wouldn’t stop poking at the butler’s body. Deep down in his mind, Damien was happy that this happened. Maybe the test to confirm his coldness is this, because up until now, Damien has been handling this better than anyone would have thought.

It would have been thought of him to scream and give the butler the severe punishment any servant who fell in this situation would receive.
Damien used to be a very rude, cold-hearted man and never stopped his words to fly around, in other to hurt others.

“Go and sit down,” he said calmly. Annabel and Vera were surprised to hear that. He didn’t take a step away from where he was standing, and as the door was locked already by Annabel, no one would know that something was going on in the house by this hour of the day.

All the workers and even Caleb must have been sleeping by now. If not for Annabel who was sober last night, Damien wouldn’t have been here.

It was because he tried stopping Annabel from leaving that caused all this to take place. Now he wonders what Annabel wanted to say, that made her feel like speaking with the butler urgently.

Vera wiped the tears in her eyes away. Annabel released her body from Vera’s, but she immediately locked their hands together, and then she walked her to the bed.

Vera took a sit on the bed and Annabel did the same beside her. “I’m sorry,” Annabel whispered to the beautiful princess who had tears in her eyes presently.

Vera faked a smile, then she ruffled Annabel’s hair while saying, “Thank you for telling him. I wasn’t expecting you to be brave like that,” Vera not minding Damien’s eyes that were gawking at them drew Annabel’s body closer to herself, while placing a peck on her cheek.

Annabel allowed Vera to do whatever she wanted with her, and when Vera released her hand from her cheek, Annabel said, “Damien, she’s sorry,” Annabel said in expectation.

She wanted Damien to be pleased with the princess and also see to the situation, that love lead her into it. Damien was supposed to be glad that someone made such a huge sacrifice for him.

When everybody was busy staying away from him, the princess didn’t stay back, she came for him instead. The princess left her status and royal lifestyle behind, just because of her love for him.

Some people don’t sacrifice even what they have for others. It’s not many that would care about how others’s life ends up. The little one who cares are called guardian angel. Vera is Damien’s guardian angel.

There was nothing Damien wouldn’t do to make Annabel happy. If Annabel wants Vera to be spared, he would eventually do that. It’s just that, as of now, Damien doesn’t find himself being angry with the butler for a long time. A part of him was happy that what he had once imagined came to pass.

“Annabel, why didn’t you tell me when you found out about it? I’m your brother, what if it’s someone that wants to harm us and she lied to you?” Damien asked Annabel strictly. Hiding the smile that wanted to show.

“I trust her not to do that. You even burnt her tongue and she was mute about it. If it was me, I would have yelled out that I’m a princess and get you punished,” Annabel started speaking fearlessly, taking Damien and Vera in awe.

“If she wanted to harm you, she would not have spared you for that. She’s a princess, vengeance can’t make her leave her parents, just to stay with you,” she pointed out, incase Damien was blind to see it.

“I believe her that she loves you, and you should love her too. It’s not everyone who sees people occasionally to make sacrifices for them,” Annabel completed her words.

Damien scratched the back of his head like he was guilty about everything she said. What was the need for Annabel to use her sharp tongue on him now? It wasn’t Damien who asked the princess to leave her house.

“You betrayed your brother and now you’re scolding me? Was it because you love the princess?” Damien asked, with his eyes raised at her.

Vera sat there, watching and listening to their conversation, and as time passed by, her heart started calming down. She was feeling relieved with each passing minute.

“The same brother that didn’t allow me to have a pet? Nope! You’re the one who betrayed me by scaring her after begging you not to,” Annabel flaunts her brown-long hair to the side after speaking.

”Annabel I got you a bird, and I got a luxurious house built for it. And Vera, have I shouted at you since I got here? Did I do anything to scare you?” Damien asked and looked at her. Making Vera happy that he called her name again.

“No, master Damien,” Vera answered truthfully. It was true, even when it was strange. Since Damien came inside, he hasn’t said a single word in a raised voice. He had maintained his calmness up until now.

“You heard that? Now give me another reason for your betrayal,” Damien taunted. Seeing Annabel’s shoulder drop, he knew that she did not have any more lies to tell.

“I’m sorry. I just wanted her to stay with us, and if I had told you, you might have sent her away,” she replied truthfully.

Damien shook his head, then he let out a deep breath. Annabel was right. Damien was not as calm as he is now days back. All thanks to the butler for building this side of him, for him to live with.

“I don’t know what to say about that.” He told to Annabel, who shrugged her shoulder at him, without saying anything.

“I have an important meeting in the morning, and I don’t know when I’ll be back. Are you still going to leave tomorrow?” He directed his question at Vera.

“Yes, I have to. I’ve promised my sister that I would be home then,” Vera replied.

“Caleb’s girlfriend?” Damien scoffed and saw Vera smile over his question without answering, but he didn’t feel offended by it.

“I don’t know how long the meeting would take. Can you continue to disguise till we get to talk about it? I mean, dress like you always do. I don’t want anyone else to find out about this,” Damien asked and she agreed with him.

“Alright then. I’m going to continue the sleep which Annabel didn’t let me. When I am back at night, you and I will discuss about us, Vera.” Damien stated hesitantly.

Smiling at Annabel who was grinning over nothing in particular, he turned around and quietly left the room.
