Rebecca jammed her palms together and pushed it into her clasped thighs.
“So? What does it say?” She turned to Jeremy, her eyes holding nervousness and uncertainty.
Jeremy stared at the phone screen, purposely holding up his smile, when he stared back at her he made sure his gaze revealed nothing, his expression blank.

“Well, it says here that..” he made a dramatic pause, lowering his gaze.

“Come-on Jeremy! I’m dying of nervousness right now!” Rebecca frowned at him, “just tell me what it says”

“That you got in”

“Jere-” she was about scolding him before his words got registered in her head, “wait, I got in?” She asked amidst heavy breathing.

“You sure did!” He smiled.

“Oh my goodness” Rebecca breathed out, releasing her palms as she clapped in happiness, jumping up.

“Congratulations Rebecca” Jeremy said.
“Thank you, you’re the brain behind it after all” she smiled at him.
“Well, it also reads here that the stage one of the event commences on Friday–
“Friday? That’s next tomorrow!” Rebecca gasped.
“Yeah, it’s by three, all contestants are to be there by two for a brief physical introduction and then the audio competition starts” Jeremy read from the phone.
“Phew..okay, now I’m nervous!” Rebecca breathed out.
“Well look where the last nervousness got you, you got picked. So it’s okay to be nervous” Jeremy smiled.

“No, thinking of this physical stage is nerve wrecking. I’ve never done this before and I don’t even know how it works”
“Come-on Rebecca, you’ll be told everything once you get there. And like my mom usually say, there is always a first time for everything. You don’t think everyone participating have done this before, do you?”

“No, you’re right” Rebecca breathed out. Her expression suddenly wiped off and she plopped to the bench, a sigh passing through her l-ips.
“I don’t know what song to sing-

Jeremy twitch his l-ips at her, “aren’t you going to sing your song?” His brows raised.
“My song? You think I should?”
“Why shouldn’t you? It’s your dream to perform to a crowd, right? Take this as a dream come true, do your best and I believe you’ll get in and then you’ll be able to fulfill your dream”

“Really? You think my song is..that good?” Rebecca eyes lit up.
“Of course it’s that good! Come-on Rebecca, be positive and just do this thing”
“Yeah, you’re right” she nodded in agreement.

She never would have thought she would feel very nervous and confused on this matter, especially since she refused it at first. Suddenly she has forgotten all about her dad and his troubles, all she can think about now is the contest and her will to do her best. She wants to see how far it’ll lead her.

When she breathed out again, Jeremy placed a palm on her shoulder, “if you’ll allow me, I can come cheer you up while you practice and honestly tell you if you’re doing great” Jeremy suggested.
“You’ll do that?” She asked and he nodded, “I would really need it. Thanks”

“It’s nothing”
“And there’s this new song I’m working on, I could just do a bit of reediting and maybe you could rate it for me”
“I’ll love to” Jeremy smiled, “So, I’m getting a private concert?”
“Yeah, looks like you are” she smiled back, “so, after school we’ll work for an hour. My dad returns from work by six, hopefully we’ll be done before he arrives. How’s that?”
“Great!” Jeremy readily agreed.
“Now, all of that aside, let’s celebrate you getting into the first stage of one of the biggest contest in the city at the moment” Jeremy brought a lunch takeout cellophane out. “I didn’t find wine at the cafeteria since it’s unlawful in the school, So I just got orange juice”
“Wait..you bought all this?” She stared at the stuffs he packed out, “what if I hadn’t qualified?”

“Let’s just say I already sensed your qualification,” he began uncapping the juice pack, he handed it to her when he was done and went for another “now, let’s make a toast…”

“Why isn’t Jeremy here yet?” Alicia asked in frustration, rejecting the plate of ch¡ps Harrison offered her, “there’s literally just five minutes left until break ends”

“I don’t know. He just said to save him a seat here and that he’ll join us soon” Harrison replied.

“This is the third time in a row that he’s running late to eat with us. What the hell is he up to?” Alicia stared around the cafeteria and scoffed silently.
Of course McCoy is absent too, just like Jeremy.

“I’m sure he’s just busy studying or doing something smart. Oh I envy his perfect grades so much!” Fiona breathed out.

“Do you guys not notice anything suspicious about him lately?” Alicia asked, “he’s been acting really out of place these days and he doesn’t hang out with us like he used to”

“Suspicious? No. Not hanging out with us like he used to, yeah. But I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. At least, we see that he’s fine and he speak to us”

Alicia threw Fiona a distasteful look, “it’s everything to worry about!” She snapped at her, “I have a feeling he’s ditching us to hang out with Rebecca”

“So? If he chooses to hang out with her over us, why should we bother about him?” Harrison asked.

“He’s our friend! She’s probably bewitched him or something and poor Jeremy, he’s too righteous to think bad of anyone” Alicia shook her head. “We can’t let him hang out with her”

“We can’t stop him if it’s his choice. It’s not like we don’t hang out too, I don’t think we should worry–” Brianna was cut halfway by Alicia’s frown.

“Brianna darlin, can you get me some fries from the stand?” Alicia interrupted her opposition, “please?” She pouted, her expression faux.

“Er sure” Brianna said hesitantly, wondering why Alicia was suddenly speaking so freely to her. She stood up and left.

“Such a pest!” Alicia breathed out the moment Brianna was off earshot.
“We need to cut off Jeremy’s and Rebecca’s relationsh¡p, if there’s any going on” Alicia began again.

“I’ve never seen you bother this much about anyone”

“That’s because this involves Rebecca, I don’t know what she’s feeding him with to make him hang out with her but I’m sure she’s manipulating him and soon Jeremy will fall victim of her freakiness like I did”

“Jose likes Rebecca, you know. I don’t see you trying to stop their relationsh¡p” Harrison ch¡pped in, suspicious.

“What are you insinuating?” Alicia now looked disturbed, “Jose and Jeremy are two different people. Jeremy’s my friend, our friend! Jose isn’t”

“I guess you have a point” Harrison agreed with a shrug.

Alicia huffed at him, chugging down her entire drink. None of her friends seemed bothered as she was about Jeremy and Rebecca’s friendsh¡p.
She didn’t know how deep it was yet but she was sure it was growing and it upsets her to her stomach. They were even close enough to exchange text messages and give invitations to eat lunch together.

Just like before Rebecca was once again taking over a guy she admired or maybe liked.
Wait. . Is she in love with Jeremy?
Alicia’s brows narrowed as the realisation hit her. A grimace rested on her face as she rejected the thoughts. No, she isn’t in love with him, she’s only preventing Rebecca from winning. She wanted Jeremy around her and she was going to get him to be that way.

“Harrison, can you find Jeremy and bring me his phone?”

“I can but why?” Harrison asked.

“My Instagram deleted again”

“Oh great!” Harrison snapped, earning a glare from Alicia.

“How’s that great!” Fiona who has been quiet all along spoke up and Alicia nodded in agreement.

“Cos I downloaded the app and I have it saved on my phone right now” Harrison looked fulfilled as he spoke.

“What? I thought you didn’t like Instagram!” Alicia palmed her forehead.

“I don’t but I did it in case an issue like the last one pops up and you need the app again.” Harrison’s smile deepened, “I didn’t want you to search far. I’m so considerate, right?”

“No, you’re dumb!” Alicia snapped at him, “what am I supposed to do with your phone?”

“You just said you wanted–

“I can get it on my own. You shouldn’t have kept it in your phone if you didn’t like it”

“Okay but why do you sound mad-

“Cos you make me mad, Harrison. Just one task, one simple task and you had to ruin it!” Alicia fisted the table and stood up, her misunderstood anger boiling even hotter.

“But–

“Don’t follow me” Alicia kicked a chair as she stomped out of the cafeteria, Fiona running after her to catch up.

Jeremy walked Rebecca to her class after lunch,
“You should head back to your classroom too, Jeremy”

“Yeah” he dryly replied. “So five pm at your place?”

“Yes” she nodded. “I’ll go in now”

“Um Rebecca?”

She turned to him again, curiously. “Yes?”

“Nothing,” he laughed awkwardly, “just.. good luck”

She laughed, shaking her head at him. “Goodbye Jeremy”

Jeremy strolled down the hall to his class, he had only just passed the staircase when he felt an arm pull him back, stopping his movement.
He discovered it was Alicia, “hey” he tossed a dry greeting at her.

“I didn’t see you at the cafeteria” she said, looking pissed.

“I decided to not go to the cafeteria today” Jeremy replied, “is there a problem?”

“After noticing your absence, I also discovered Rebecca wasn’t in the cafeteria either”

“Okay?” Jeremy arched a brow at her.

“This is the third time you both skipped lunch at the cafeteria and at the same time too.” Alicia grimaced, “it’s not a coincidence, is it?”

“What are you trying to do or insinuate, Alicia?”

“Nothing. I’m just asking you and hoping that you prove me wrong. Were you with Rebecca during lunch period today and two days ago?”

“I just didn’t use the cafeteria, that doesn’t mean I was with her–

“Well, were you?” She cut him off.

“What if I was? I told you she’s my friend. Can I not have lunch with my friend–

“Don’t you dare shift from the subject, Jeremy. Were you with her or not!” Alicia suddenly yelled.

“Okay If you’re not going to speak gently to me and yell, then you shouldn’t be talking to me at all”

“Jeremy” Alicia seemed speechless.

“Look I appreciate your friendsh¡p, Alicia. But don’t you think you’re crossing the line questioning my choice of friends? I never question yours” Jeremy chided, “please stop being so over-interested in my life, it’s starting to get annoying”

“I’m only looking out for you, Jeremy, how can you say–

“Then stop” he cut her off, “I’m in high school just like you. Thank you for looking out for me, Alicia, but at this point, I think you should just stop. Please, look out more for yourself from now on, I do not deserve your care”
