“Now, there was this guy in our class, a new student and the last son of a mayor. He was my seat partner and I was assigned to take him through some school stuffs because of my good grades. It was during that period that Alicia suddenly started talking to me again, her approach was completely strange and neutral. I remember Josh, the new student and I were in the cafeteria, eating while I was telling him about our sporting activities. Alicia joined us, crossed her arm around my shoulder and began asking me stuffs like we never had an argument nor called off our friendsh¡p,” Rebecca shrugged, “it was after lunch that day, I found out why she suddenly started talking to me” Rebecca grimaced, straightening her back.

“Apparently, she liked Josh. And she wanted me to play out a perfect meet-cute for the both of them, so he falls naturally in love with her, without her having to make a first move.
I did it, I mean it was the best I could think of but it didn’t work out, Josh just didn’t have a thing for her and there was a lot of horrible reasons why he didn’t and he told me everyone of it. It turned out, he liked me instead and it wasn’t like I didn’t feel the same way but, I felt it’d be betraying on Alicia’s part if I reciprocated his feelings, so I didn’t”

“When I eventually told Alicia what he said about not liking her, so she could stop making attempts at him that might make her seem desperate, she flared up and blamed me for it. She said I was the one who turned his mind against her and I was jealous of her and stuffs, in summary, she stopped talking to me again and honestly, I wasn’t bothered anymore.

It was just a month after that things turned around, I came to school one morning and I was everyone’s enemy, Josh instantly stopped talking to me and every student at my class scorned at me everywhere I went. Josh and Alicia surprisingly grew stronger, they even started dating and when I tried talking to him, he asked me to stay off and he doesn’t want to be found talking to a girl who sells her body for good grades, I was dumbfounded, I couldn’t even do anything,” she scoffed, “well, I let it go. With the amount of hatred, I began talking to my dad about wanting to change my school, he refused.
Two months after, I found out Alicia left our school. And years later, we relocated and I had to change my school, much to my relief.
But then I didn’t know I just got into another round of hatred. After finding out I was classmates with Alicia, she made every move to prove how much she hated me. It was only weeks later and I was doing very well, I made friends too but then, I wasn’t interested in friendsh¡p any longer. Soon, the rumors started again, that I was sleeping with teachers in exchange for good grades; there was photoshopped proof too and hatred followed immediately. No matter how overwhelming it was, I made sure not to relent in my grades, it was going great until that day; where everyone accused me of pushing Alicia down from the third floor because of a test…” She halt, going down the memory lane.

*Flashback*

Rebecca walked down the hallway, taking her backpack off her back and flinging it across her shoulder as she made her way to class.

Pausing at her locker, she quickly exchanged her backpacks for her Notebooks before slamming the door shut. Holding the notebooks on her palm and making it fling as she continued her journey to class, Rebecca paused at the doorstep when she sighted a new notice on the bulletin board in her class.
Walking in fully, she shut the door; ignoring the desperate looks on her as usual. She didn’t skip to notice that the looks had a mixture of desperation and something else, she waved it aside and stopped in front of the board, checking out the papers on it.
It was the test result, the test had been conducted just few days after resumption.

She perused through, running her finger through the list of names. She paused at the first when she didn’t find her name on it, scrolling down; Rebecca realised she took third place instead.
The second was Fiona, one of the girls that moved with Alicia and the first was… Alicia.
She gulped at the revelation and the thoughts of what her dad would do to her when he finds out about her performance, made her shudder in,side.
She gripped the book with an unmatched firmness and as she made her way to her seat, she could hear the muffled laughter at her and mockery stares from her mates. She tried her best not to look back at Alicia whose gaze was already eating her up.

Setting her books on her desk, she lowered her head for a moment, as if letting the realisation of her failure and thoughts of her dad’s future actions to her, settle within her.
Raising her head, she stood up and walked out of the class; the mockery getting louder with every step she made out.

“Someone finally dropped to third place!” Alicia accosted her before she could reach the staircase.
Rebecca shut her eyes and breathed out before turning to her.
“And I finally took my rightful position” she added with a smirk, closing up on Rebecca.

“Congratulations on finally achieving your biggest dream” Rebecca returned the smirk.

“Biggest dream?” Alicia scoffed, “you wish! I was the best before you came here and stole my position as usual, like the thief that you are!” She spat.

“Well then, I hope you enjoy it while it lasts cos ‘thieves’ don’t give up” Rebecca said, making her sarcasm unhidden.

“Tch..this position have come to stay, Rebecca. It’s a new section and I’m back to being whom I’ve always been before your arrival. I’ll keep beating you in everyway I can, just like I always did” she said, her expression blank.

“Well, good luck on that–

“Why don’t you just get out of here? Why did you even come to this school in the first place?” Alicia cut in, seething.

Rebecca laughed, “why? Thought you became a smart bitch now, does my presence still intimidate you even after everything you did?”
Alicia eyes w¡den.
“Yes, Alicia, I know it was you who made up that absurd story about me doing dirty things to boost my grades. I know you just too well, Alicia, and I know the petty things you can do”

Alicia’s palm curled into a fist by her side and suddenly, she released it, raised it up and slapped Rebecca hærd across her face. The sound of the slap sent students pouring out of classes to the hallway where the sound came from.
Furious, Rebecca grabbed her by her collar and pushed her to the rail, holding her firmly on it after her back hit the iron bar.

Taking a deep breath to calm herself, Rebecca decided to let her go; she didn’t want to create a fight and definitely not now nor with Alicia.
As she made to leave her, Alicia raised her both legs to kick her just at that same moment and as Rebecca released her, she went flying off the rail and down the building floor to the ground.

Gasps and horror filled cries rented the air as Rebecca stared at the situation in a confused and surprised state.
She shook her head, facing the students..

“I–I didnt–
She tried to tell them with their shaky voice but almost immediately they accused her.
“You pushed her! You pushed Alicia, you freak!” The accusations rang up in the air and Rebecca shook her head negatively but with everyone present and with the bad reputation Alicia painted her with; she was never believed.

“..I was expelled, almost transferred and all of Alicia’s hospital bills was covered by my dad. Of course, I got his own share of accusation but he wasn’t very harsh on me like other times. And after that day; I became even more hated at school” she ended.

“Wow!” Jeremy breathed, “this is so..so–

“Unbelievable?” Rebecca completed.

“Yeah and I’m speechless. I can’t believe Alicia is such a horrible person. She should’ve spoke the truth but instead she let everyone think you pushed her; even me” Jeremy expound.

Rebecca smiled, “yeah but to be honest, I’m used to the hatred–

“But you’re not a bad person, you should tell everyone”

“No. No one will believe me,” she smiled, Jeremy could see the sadness in it. “I’ve been painted black already, it’s a stain that’s hærd to wash off. And honestly, I’m not concerned about anyone’s feelings towards me cos it doesn’t restrict me from doing what I love to do best”

“I’m sorry, Rebecca. I’m sorry you had to go through all of that and I’m sorry for blindly accusing you in the past”

“No,” Rebecca shook her head, “you didn’t accuse me, Jeremy. I was just being unnecessarily mean to you but still, you came close. You’re the reason I’m about to take a big step, you’re a great guy”

“Thanks” Jeremy smiled, “and you’re a great person too. And one Day, I’m sure our school and the world will be able to see that” Jeremy assured and she nodded.

“Hug?” She opened her arm wide.

“Sure!” Jeremy nodded before moving into her embrace.

I apologise for the unannounced leave, I work double now so it’s not easy to keep up with regular posting. But I’ll Try very hærd to post whenever I’m chanced to type this story.
