Chapter 10

(Your harmony…..)

Lee’s eyes softened as she slowly pulled Chan’s sweater over her head. The sweater smelled clean and like aftershave, also mixed with the fruity after scent of what she determined was his cologne. She felt her stomach flip over.

What was this feeling?

“Uh… thank you…” She began awkwardly.

Chan scoffed. “I don’t need your thanks. I only did that because your pathetic attempts at hiding yourself were getting too painful too watch.”

Normally, Lee would have found herself cringing at Chan’s unique habit of always managing to sound like a puffed up waste of space, but now, strangely, she felt herself not only being tolerant, but almost chuckling at how she was getting used to his attitude.

She pulled the hood over her head, and held onto it gently.

“Aren’t you gonna ask what that was all about?”

“I don’t care.”

“Oh. That’s okay I guess.”

They both found their way to the store, and as Lee heaped stacks of chocolate milk into a basket, Chan stared at the TV.

They were playing one of his music videos, and he felt his heart twinge in pain. He watched himself dance and sing on the stage, full of life and a joy that nothing else could ever make up for in his life. He missed that. Terribly.

When exactly would he be able to return back to his old life? As more time passed, he felt more and more apprehensive. It was like a part of him was missing, and nothing could ever fill that h0le.

The store clerk recognized him and asked for an autograph, and though he would have enjoyed the attention, today, he didn’t really feel all that elated.

He sighed, looking for anything that could distract him from his thoughts. He saw Lee once again pull the hoodie around her face, biting her lip slightly as they began to head out of the store, and he rolled his eyes.

For someone who acted so fiercely, she was a bit dense. He had seen how shocked she had looked when he gave her his hoodie. Was that all it took to take her? What, had no one ever been nice to her before in her life?

It was cute.

He found himself chuckling quietly, then his eyes wยกdened in the realization that thinking about Lee had managed to help him forget his worries temporarily.

He scoffed. Well,at least she was good as a stress reliever.

They both walked quietly back to the house, although Chan noticed that Lee was no longer walking ahead of him, but rather walking in step with him, even though she managed to keep a distance between them.

The sun had already begun to set, and the street lights started to flicker on one by one.

They had walked a few meters when they noticed a small crowd gathered ahead of them. Chan was about to ignore them and walk past, when he caught a glimpse of the front, and saw a guitar laying on the ground by a woman pacing around frantically. He tapped one of the by standers and asked what was going on.

“Oh, this lady, Reva, she always does these street shows and performances every week. But today her band member cancelled last minute, so she has no one to help her play the guitar. Man, this is annoying. I paid to see some music not this. Wait a second… aren’t you…”

Chan had already begun to squeezed his way past the crowd before the stranger even finished his sentence. Lee tried to reach out to him.

“Chan…where are you going….?” But he moved so fast, and she ended up getting lost in the crowd, as he retreated further and further in, and all she could see was his back. She tried not to panic, and tried to find a way out of the crowd, but that effort was proving futile as the crowd began to cluster even tighter, on seeing the mysterious man walking into the center.

Meanwhile, Chan on the other hand, had seen this as an opportunity to showcase his skills and superiority. Even though he knew that his voice was his biggest selling point, he would show all those useless fans that he was more than just an angelic voice.

He ignored the voice of reason, which happened to sound like Cynthia’s voice, telling him that people weren’t supposed to know he was on the Island at all.

He made his way to the front and stood in front of the panicked singer.

“Hey. I heard you need a gutarist.”

The singer looked up, and her eyes wยกdened. “Oh my God! You’re Chan!”

The people in the crowd began to murmur, and Lee pulled her hoodie over her head tighter.

He flashed her a smile.

“I want to….help.” He could practically see the stars twirling in the singer’s eyes, and she got up quickly.

“This is great! Um…this is the song. Do you know it?”

Chan took the phone from her hand and plugged the earphones in his ears, giving the song a listen. It was a relatively good song, one by one of the less popular singers.

“I would have loved to play one of your songs instead, it would be so fitting, but I’m not prepared…”

“It’s fine.” He said, as he picked up the guitar, and sat gently on the concrete. Sitting down like that, playing for small groups of people, it felt so weird and strange to him.

The singer clapped her hands to get the people’s attention.

“Okay guys! Once again, I’m so sorry for the delay, but we have a special surprise! Sitting right here with me, is the one and only Chan!”

The scre-ms that erupted from the crowd were unexpected and expected at the same time. Chan chuckled to himself. Just the reaction he had wanted.

People began to clamour over each other to get a glimpse of him, and the singer hurried to try and calm them down.

“Uh! He has promised to play for us tonight, and once he’s done, I’ll leave him to you guys!”

Well, she sure knew how to take charge of the situation. She sat beside him as the crowd began to calm down.

“Ready?” She asked, and Chan nodded in affirmation, although he thought in his head that it was a stupid question.

He began to strum the guitar gently, feeling his hands fluidly moving in tune to the song. The singer smiled at him, obviously satisfied and impressed, and she began to sing. They took over the air and seized the hearts of everyone present.

Lee watched in amazement as Chan began to play. The singer had good vocals, but it was honestly something about the way he played, his charisma, and the emotion poured into every note, that made the wh0le performance magical. It dawned on her again just why the wh0le world was so enamoured by this man.

His talent was no doubt something God given, and extremely rare, the ability to touch people’s hearts directly through his sound.

He seemed like a completely different person when he played, and she found herself staring at him alone, everyone else, even the singer had disappeared.

She wished…for the first time in three years, she wished she could play alongside him.

She didn’t know when the hoodie fell off her head, and she was jerked out of her bliss by someone tapping her shoulder.

Chan knew from the moment he began playing that the air had shifted. Everyone was silent, as most audiences always were whenever they heard him sing or play. He smirked. Even though his voice was gone, he was still the best. He had completely outshone the singer.

He was brought out of his thoughts by a sudden commotion in the crowd. He stopped playing, and looked up, as people in the crowd began to turn towards the source of the commotion.

“What’s going on? Is everyone okay?” The singer asked, looking a but irritated that someone had interrupted what Chan knew she must have thought to be her most killer performance yet.

He sighed and crossed his leg, , waiting for the singer to enter the crowd and pacify whoever was causing the commotion, when he heard something that made his blood run cold.

“Answer me Liana!”

He sprang to his feet, and dashed into the crowd, wondering just why on Earth he was panicking and reacting this way.

He dashed into the crowd, and felt an unexplainable emotion when he came across the source of the commotion.

Lee was on the ground, and he could see from the movement of her shoulders that she was shaking. A girl was standing above her, while some people held her back, as she continued yelling.

“Tell me! What gives you the right to be happy?! What gives you the right to smile? My brother died! How could you have been the only one to escape unhurt?! So many people died! And yet here you are smiling?!”

Chan felt a rage he couldn’t understand boil in his veins.

“HEY!”

Everyone went quiet and turned to him.

He marched up to the girl and stood in front of her, shielding Lee.

“What…what the hell do you think you’re doing?!”

The girl stared in shock at him, then began to stutter.

“Chan….? I….why are you defending that girl?! You don’t know who she is! She is a witch! I’m sure of it! How could only her come out unscathed….!”

Chan had no idea what the girl was talking about, and his rage only intensified.

“What gives you the right to treat her that way? A witch? Is that your opinion? Why does she have to live by your own opinion or rules?”

The girl stared at him open mouthed. “See? It’s easy for you to talk and rage when the other person is weak and you feel you are in control.”

“You don’t understand!!! I know what I’m saying!!”

He ignored her, as well as the whispers of the crowd around them, cursed under his breath, then crouched down.

He grabbed Lee’s arms. She was shaking terribly, and her eyes were not in focus.

“Lee? Lee.” He called softly.

She glanced at him, her eyes filled with tears. He helped her up, and slowly began to lead her away.

No matter how he tried, he couldn’t get the stricken and horrified look on her face out of his mind, as well as the continuous voice that kept on repeating itself in his head, telling him that what had happened was every bit his fault.

They arrived home, with Aster and his mom looking as worried as they could be, especially at Lee’s countenance. She didn’t talk to anyone though, and instead ran to lock herself in,side her room.

They turned to him for answers, but he honestly had none to give them.

“What is the meaning of this mom? Does this mean she can’t go out again? Why is she still….?!”

“Aster… please…give your sister some time. You can’t rush her. She’ll heal when she’s ready.”

“Time? It’s been three years mom! How much longer is she planning to waste away like this? Is this because we always let her be? She can’t keep living like this!”

Chan stared at Aster, whom he had never seen lose his cool this way. Aster had always been so understanding, always so easygoing and respective of anyone’s plight.

He felt pressed down and heavy with guilt.

‘Lee went through that because of you.’

He clasped his hands around his head, hoping to drown the voice out.

No! It wasn’t his fault!

How was he supposed to know that would happen?!

‘But you knew that she had been trying to hide from people all day. Yet you still left her just because you wanted to do something for your own selfish reasons.’

He stormed into his room, and shut the door, but he couldn’t shut the voice out.

“Why can’t you ever see anyone but yourself?!” Cynthia’s voice rang in his head, and he felt it throbbing in what was fast becoming a headache.

Lee’s stricken and horrified face flashed through his mind, parelleling with the same look on a face he knew all too well,a look he knew all too well. One he had seen too many times, one he had been running away from his wh0le life.

No!

He had said he wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. He wasn’t going to allow someone to control his life. He wasn’t going to allow anyone to dictate anything to him. He would follow his own way, and not listen to anyone. He had risen to a position where no one even dared speak up to him, so why was he still being haunted by that look?!

Was it a crime for him to want to live his life by his own rules?!

‘I am the one who owns your destiny, Chan. It’s all good and fine if you don’t want anyone to rule your life. But once you start including me in that category, I have to step in. You have strayed too far away from me.’

Chan held his head together in anger.

“You own my life?! No! No one owns me! I listen to no one! I follow no one’s rules! I can do whatever the hell I want to! Where were You when I needed you?! When she needed you?! Now you just want to step in and say that you own me?! It’s too late! Too late!”

He s-cked in tears, feeling anger and sadness boiling in his veins.

What happened to Lee wasn’t his fault. He was not to blame.

In fact, she had caused it for being so stupid.

Yes. That was right. He wasn’t wrong. Fififif

No one had the right to say he was wrong.

He kept repeating the words in his heart, but no matter how many times he said them, he couldn’t bring himself to believe them.

The internet blew up with news of what has happened that night. Some people bhad even managed to record videos and posted it all over the net.

It was pure chaos.

Chan couldn’t go out for days, and even with all their efforts, the buzz wasn’t dying down. Cahn knew that it was only a matter of time until people figured out that he was staying with Aster.

Although Chan had gotten the attention he had wanted, he was not enjoying it in any way.

He kept on thinking, at what cost had he gotten the attention?

Lee had shut herself in her room ever since that day, not bothering to come out, even to eat. Aster’s mom took her her meals, and many a times Chan had thought of going to see her,but decided against it.

On one of such days, there was a knock on the door, and Aster opened it to see, to the shock of everyone, Cynthia.

And she looked extremely pissed.
