The cock crowed. Another brand new day emanated in the blessed kingdom of Ukra. Julius was still in bed when chattering of traders vibrated his eardrums. He stretched his body and rolled over to another position when a sound from a blacksmith, hammering a metal totally woke him up. He opened his eyes to see that Maximus was no more on the bed with him. He stepped out of the chamber to a larger room where Maximus just dropped two plates of baked bread and two cups of coffee.

“Right on time!” Maximus announced, pointing at the breakfast while his eyes fixed on his friend.

Julius smiled. He was pleased and it could be seen on his smiling face. Sluggishly, he walked to the table and sat down opposite a plate while Maximus occupied another seat opposite him as both began to dine together silently. Maximus occasionally glanced at his friend who seemed worried. Therefore he asked him, “What?”

Julius kept quiet.

Maximus totally stopped eating, but a bread rested in his hand as he gazed at his friend. “I noticed you were not yourself throughout the night. What’s going on?” he asked again.

“Nothing really.” Julius replied with a smile to cover up his grief. “I really admire you, Maximus.” he changed the topic. “You’ve been fending for yourself ever since your parents died during the war. You’re the strongest person I have ever seen.”

Maximus also smiled. “Thanks.” he began to eat again. Silence returned to the table while the chattering and activities of the blacksmith filled the air.

“Max” Julius called. “I’ve been wondering, you know who Kadura is, yet you haven’t told anybody except me. Why?”

Maximus didn’t look at him as he replied saying, “I might be jovial and ridiculous but I’m not stupid, Julius. Kadura who chose to keep his identity a secret knows why. Then why should I be the one to reveal his identity to people? It’s actually non of my business.” he drank a coffee and hit the cup on the table while Julius watched him silently.

“I have more questions, Max.” he said.

Maximus then looked at him. “Shoot.” he said.

“Assuming Avera loves you like you love her so much and you discover that you’re Kadura who is meant to marry the princess and save the kingdom. What will you do?”

Maximus wrecked his brain and twisted his face, wondering why his friend would ask such a question. He couldn’t put a finger on it, so he said, “The question is critical while the answer is a delicate one. Another thing you need to understand is that no two individual is the same, hence our choices also defer. Some will choose to fulfil the purpose of which they were created why some will rather let the kingdom collapse for the love of their life which I’m one of them. I’ll love Avera till the end.”

Julius exhaled. He sipped his coffee and took a bite of the bread, thinking critically on how cleverly his friend answered the question.

“But how can I not know that I’m Kadura?” Maximus broke the silence rhetorically. “How possible is it for Kadura not to know that he’s Kadura?”

“It’s possible, Max. It’s also possible for those who are not Kadura to claim to be Kadura.” Julius stood up. “Thanks for your hospitality. I won’t forget this.” he walked out, leaving Maximus thinking about his statement.

Bruce’s door opened. The old man looked up to see Julius entering boldly. He suspended a mixture of herbs he was hitting and faced him. “Thank goodness you came. I have been meaning to summon you, Julius” he began to dry his palms with a fabric.

“I came to pick something before returning to the castle.” Julius walked towards his room.

“Julius!” Bruce shrieked.

The boy stopped, slowly turned to him in a way both glared. “Why do I have the feelings that I already know what you’re about to tell me?” he asked.

“It doesn’t matter if you know or not.” Bruce walked closer to him. “You have to step up and embrace your destiny.”

“Like how do you expect me to do that?” he spread his hands.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. Travel is never a matter of money but of courage. Every day is a journey and the journey itself is a home. We often get nervous when it comes to going to new places, experiencing new things or meeting new people. We worry about what happens to those we leave behind. Then at the end of our journey, we experience something so amazing, so breathtaking and so astonishing that we finally break free. We get so excited that we reach out to others so we can share our joy at the end and allow them to experience it for that moment through our words and maybe one day, for themselves.” he gradually placed a hand on Julius’ shoulder and staring into his eyes. “Let’s start by loving lady Adriana and leaving Albat behind.”

Violently, Julius flipped off his father’s hand from his shoulder and walked away from him. “You think is that easy?” he turned back aggressively. “Have you thought of how she will feel or how I feel about it? Do you actually think I do not want to make things right, following how hazardous it will be if the king knows my true identity, and how emotionally committed I am already with Albat? The whole thing is just heavy for me! It’s too much for me!!” he lamented bitterly. He grabbed the doorknob and banged the door when he left the chamber. Bruce, for the first time, felt his pains and regretted ever trying to talk him out of his emotions.

Acrino day is a popular day for women dancing competition in Ukra. All young girls from age sixteen who wish to participate take time to practice and prepare for the day. Now, the day has come. People gathered at the coleisum, chanting and hailing their favourite contestants. Avera never seized to be glowing in the midst of the contestants who dressed in a short tied fabric on their w–sts and another across their chests like an ancient dress pattern of Igbos in the Eastern part of Nigeria.

The king and the princess could be seen on their seats while the judges officiated the competition. Everywhere became quiet when Avera, the first girl took the stage to wiggle her body. First, a base-drum blasted from the music areana followed by scabellum, Lute, Lyre and a Cithara which rhymically sounded melodically in the ears of everyone.

Avera wiggled her w–st, rotated, pinned her toes and wiggled her hands up like the movement of a snake. Maximus admired her from his position and was the first to start applauding followed by many. Suddenly, the sound of a warning bell paved around the kingdom thereby disrupting the competition. People became terrified. Sooner did they see a swam of strange insects clustering the coleisum. Everybody began to run hecter skelter. The king and the princess were secured immediately and taken into the palace with all the windows and doors locked as they anticipated a report from the kingdom physician. Just then, Bruce walked in. He could see the king, Adriana, Julius, Albat and other knights and counsel of elders.

“Tell us, Bruce son of Divit; what’s the situation report?” the king asked.

“My lord, many has been infected by these insects. Many are lying in my chamber, on the street and other places. I fear, they do not have an hour to live.” he replied.

“The disease has no cure?”

“I’ve never seen such pathogens before, my lord. I guess we’re experiencing our first plague which can only be eradicated by the translation of it’s event to idioms in the lions den.”

All stared at the king. King Corbatt turned his back on them, thinking critically as he walked to his throne. He sat down on it, utilizing the quietness that had emerged in the palace. Swiftly, he stood up and began to walk towards the entrance to the basement where the great lion waited patiently to devour him if he wrongly translate the event.

“Father!” Adriana called him.

The king turned. He did not only see his daughter looking at him, he saw all staring with much anticipation and expectations.

“Be careful, father.” Adriana told him.

The king swallowed hærd and continued his motion to the basement. He got there to see the great lion already pacing around the cage, waiting for him.

“I can see you’re already waiting to have my blood gush down your oesophagus.” The king waved his stick of fire.

“Hohohoho..” the lion laughed. “I’ve learned that waiting is the most difficult bite, and I want to get use to the feeling, knowing that you’re with me, even when you’re not by my side to have not only your blood gush down my oesophagus but also your bones and heartless heart.”

“Well, you won’t see any of my piece. More of me is hidden than is seen. I am an Iceberg!!” the king boasted as he continued. “I never was, am always to be. No one ever saw me, nor ever will. And yet I am the confidence of all, To live and breath on this terrestrial ball.”

“Clever!” The lion stopped pacing and glared at him. “At the sound of me, men may dream or stamp their feet. At the sound of me, women may laugh or sometimes weep. I am a music of death hungry for your soul!!” he boasted too and continued. “You saw me where I never was and where I could not be. And yet within that very place, my face you often see. I am a reflection of horror to your evil deeds!!”

“My decisions are of good not of evil!”

“Hohohoho.. your heart is as black as charcoal. First think of a person who lives in disguise, who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies. Next, tell me what’s the last to mend, the middle of middle and the end of end. Finally, give me the sound often heard during the search for a hærd to find word. Now, string them together and answer me this, which creature are you unwilling to k×ss?”

King Corbatt waved his stick of light. “I have no time for riddles!”

“Then tell me the idiomatic expression of the first plague in your kingdom which you’ve rendered heirless with only a feminine sp×rm accumulated in your scrotum.” the lion began to pace again while he waited for the king to answer.

A wrong answer opens the cage automatically and the lion rushes the king to devour him. King Corbatt understood that therefore he took his time to answer the question. His heart accelerated while his confused face reflected on the stick of fire.

“Hohoho… i can smell your blood from here already, King cockroach.” The lion mocked him.

“Stop being a jerk. First, I heard the bell before the plague. The disease caused by it is unknown. Therefore the idiomatic expression of the first plague in Ukra kingdom is: ‘It does not ring a bell'”. The king answered.

“Clever!”

“Yes, I’m always smarter, cockroach in a cage” he also mocked and began to walk out of the basement.

“You may be lucky now. You might never be again, king cockroach!” the lion roared….
