Episode 16.
“Did he take you to an amusement park?” My aunt’s voice snapped me back to reality.
After yesterday’s little fun at the man made forest, all the scenes kept popping up on my mind and I can’t help smiling at each memory of it.
“Sorry Aunt, what did you say?” I asked because I didn’t hear what she said.
“I was asking you if Chris took you to an amusement park yesterday because I can’t define this your radiant smile” she repeated patting my shoulder.
“Yeah” I lied rolling my eyes, she simply shrugged and left the kitchen.
I grinned and continued arranging the plates which I just finished washing, it’s Tuesday morning and everyone is ready to leave.
My uncle had left immediately after eating and am sure Chris must have left too because I have been busy in the kitchen, Aunt too is off with Nancy, she will drop her off at her school as usual.
“Any other thing?!” I talked to myself looking around the kitchen to see if there’s anything else I would do before going outside.
When I found nothing, I went into the parlour to watch television though it’s not one of my favorite thing…it makes me sleepy and I prefer reading a book.
I mopped at it for a while and lost interest in whatever Nollywood actors and actresses are doing, I changed the channel to an American action movie, that got worst because my eyes kept closing.
I hissed at it and switched it off, I went outside to meet the gatekeeper, he was dancing to music streaming on his radio cassette, I joined him.
“Ah! Small madam!! I sabi dance oh” he showed off his yellow teeth and I think he has to receive an award for his good English.
“Before nko? Oya na, let’s dance!” I kept shaking my wa-ist.
I laughed when he said; “No! You be temptation, I don’t want to loose my job.
He switched off the radio and went in,side his quarter with it, I sat down on his chair and waited until he came out again.
“So, my friend, where’s that your chess game?” I asked, at least, let me not die of boredom.
“I sabi play am?”
“Yes nah, go bring am make we play together, I go beat you like small pikin” I said trying to imitate his accent, the way he speaks his English is always very funny.
“I no fit beat me, me na baba for chess kwo” he said and dashed in,side his quarter again to bring it.
He brought it out and we played for a full hour, he won all the rounds and I could only use him to catch cruise, we talked about useless things and was only interrupted by a knock on the gate.
“Let me check who’s at the gate” I said standing up but he refused saying that if it’s his boss or madam, they might scold him.
I accepted and allowed him do his job, after all, he gets paid for it. I looked at the gate to see who it is though, I wished that it would be Chris but I already know he’s only going to be home in the evening.
He spent the wh0le of yesterday with me but I miss him already, I even miss him when he looks elsewhere and not at me. I’m not sure I’m normal.
“I’m looking for Christian” A female voice said to the gate keeper, I stood up to go and see what she looks like and what exactly she wants.
“Musa, let me talk to her” I said and invited the girl in,side.
She’s my age mate though I can’t tell her precise age, she looked nervous and speaks calmly as if a mosquito entered her throat.
I didn’t need to ask her questions to see that she’s rich because she’s pretty, hot and her ear rings alone can pay my school fees at the government school I went back in primary school.
We sat down on a couch at the corridor and I could only offer her a friendly smile; “well…can I get you anything?” I asked to make her at ease a little bit.
“No, don’t bother yourself, I’m fine…I’m alright” she said quickly looking at my face for a while before she diverted her eyes again.
“You said you were looking for Chris?” I questioned her again and added when she nodded, “he isn’t around, hope there’s no problem?”
“Oh no! He’s my friend and I only came to see him so we would talk about something he wants to help me with” she was quick to respond.
“Okay, he left for work this morning and he will be coming back in the evening, I wouldn’t ask you to wait for him so it’s better if you go and come back or go to his work place”
“I guess I had better get going home, just tell him that I came around” she said and that brought my mind to what her name is.
“So…what’s the name?”
“I’m Lisa, just tell him Lisa and he will understand it’s me” The girl said and stood up to leave, I saw her off and didn’t bother to tell her my name since she didn’t request for it.
When the girl left, I kept wondering who she was and what exactly she is to him till dawn.
In the evening when everyone came back home, I really wanted to tell him about it but I didn’t get a chance because my aunt told me to loose her hair.
She said she wants to make a new one tomorrow and I would go with her to her shop for more hands are needed since one of her client is celebrating her wedding anniversary.
The rest of the week went fast and I really missed him alot because I had to go to my aunt’s shop and keep a busy schedule till weekend.
On Saturday morning, he was the one that woke me up and k-ssed me goodbye before he left for work, he gave me a flower and promised to come home early on Sunday.
I longed for him till Sunday morning, he came home early and woke me from bed as he had promised and I love him more because that proves that he’s a man of his words.
“Lazy girl, it’s Sunday morning… aren’t you going to church?” He said on a very low voice as he threw light k-sses all over my face.
“I miss you so much, Chris” that’s all I said and it’s true, I hugged him.
We were in that position when Nancy barged in, she isn’t in her cheerful mood and she held a toothbrush “Mum is calling you, brother”
She was almost out of my room when she said another thing, “are you two going to make a baby because my teacher said that when a boy and a girl hugs each other, they are going to make a baby”
That one choked me, I fell on my bed and threw the sheets over my face, I’m tired of this girl!
“Hey! That teacher is the best liar of our time, common let’s go outside and please, do me a favor” Chris was saying as she took her out with him.
“What?” She asked arrogantly.
“Don’t tell anyone about this, I promise to take you to see father Christmas on December and I will buy you cheese balls” Chris was trying to talk Nancy out of broadcasting a boy and a girl hugging.
This little girl will put me into a big trouble one day.
I ran out of bed, freshened up and ran downstairs to see if everyone is ready for church but I saw a different scene.
“Mrs Paulina, please calm down let’s settle this amicably” My uncle was saying in his usual calm and collected voice.
“Settle amicably?! Did you just say settle amicably, there’s nothing to settle other than your son taking responsibility for what he has done to my daughter!” A woman retorted.
I went to stand beside my aunt and I helped her hold Nancy whom was trying to get her attention but she’s too withdrawn and she looked really sad.
My uncle was sitted and Chris stood behind him, his eyes had been on me from the time I was coming down the stairs, I noticed that but I wanted to know exactly what’s going on first.
It was when I glanced at the woman whom was still ranting about Chris taking responsibility that I noticed the girl that came to look for Chris on Tuesday standing behind her.
She was in tears and I didn’t need to think to see that the woman is her mother, they looked alike and are all dressed up in expensive clothes.
“Chris, are you responsible for the pregnancy?” My uncle asked looking at Chris and my heart sank.
Pregnancy?!
Chris?!!
No way!!!
I looked up slowly at him and he was still looking at me, maybe he’s trying to relate a message to me but I didn’t understand as he kept dimming his eyes at me.
So, this is it? I should have known…..
I suddenly felt depressed and I had to force myself not to cry because my heart ached.
