EPISODE 59

It was as though both Kathleen and Pete had been holding in their laughter, the moment they got into the car Pete started laughing first, and then Kathleen joined in the laughter. They laughed so h@rd that tears fell from Kathleen’s eyes.

“Of all days to come to church!” Pete exclaimed when the laughter finally died down.

“I’m sorry, I swear I had no idea it was family weekend. That’s the most awkward prayer I’ve had to pray.” Kathleen said ma-king Pete chuckle.

“Well, it’s okay. Let’s just go home. It’s late.” Pete said as he turned on the ignition and started driving.

“Why don’t you tell me more about yourself? I’d like to know more about you.” Pete suggested ma-king Kathleen turn to look at him.

“What would you like to know?”

“Well, you could start by telling me why you were asking God to forgive you when I was k!ss!ngyou.” Pete said with a chuckle ma-king Kathleen look away in embarr@ssment.

She had been trying to forget all about the k!ss, and had almost succeeded in pretending like it hadn’t happened, so why was he suddenly bringing it up? Kathleen wondered.

“For a lady of your age, you do seem quite innocent and naive.” Pete observed when he noticed how embarr@ssed she looked.

“…” Kathleen said nothing and just focused her attention outside the window. Luckily the traffic wasn’t very bad so the road was quite free. Now that he had raised the subject of the k!ss, she couldn’t help wondering why he had k!$$£d her. At least she knew why she had allowed him k!ssher, but she didn’t want to make any @ssumptions about he reason he had k!$$£d her. Was it because he found her attractive, or because he just liked her, or he was curious about what k!ss!ngher would be like?

“You’re not going to tell me about you?” Pete asked when she remained silent.

“Why did you k!ssme?” Kathleen suddenly asked, ma-king Pete turn to spare her a glance.

“Why?” He asked in confusion.

“Yes. Why did you decided to do that?” She repeated.

It was Pete’s turn to be silent as he thought about the question. He definitely couldn’t tell her he had started k!ss!ngher initially only because he wanted to see if she was telling the truth about d@t!ngChuka, but had allowed himself become carried away the moment hisl-ips brushed hers.

“I’m attracted to you. So I guess I k!$$£d you because I wanted to know what yourl-ips taste like.” Pete said ma-king her swallow nervously.

“I’m not…” She paused as she tried to arrange what she wanted to say in her head, “So you k!$$£d me out of curiosity?” She asked ma-king Pete frown.

“No. I k!$$£d you because I am attracted to you.” Pete corrected.

“By attracted to me, I suppose you mean S-xually attracted?” Kathleen asked ma-king Pete sigh. He was trying to un-derstand why she was asking all these questions. Was it because she wanted them to fight or quarrel? Or was she genuinely just asking to know?

“Kat, you’re undeniably beautiful and attractive, and only a blind man wouldn’t be S-xually attracted to you. So yes, I k!$$£d you because I am attracted to you.” Pete said, deciding to settle for the most honest response he could give.

“I see.” Kathleen said before looking out of the window again. So was it that he just wanted to sleep with her? Wasn’t that what it meant to be S-xually attracted to someone? He just wanted to have S-x with her like he had done with that lady he had sle-pt with? She wondered.

“What do you see?” Pete asked ma-king her turn to look at him. He had no doubt that she was going to twist his words against him. It was what women knew how to do best after all. They could make the most harmless statement sound like something abominable.

“I see what you said.” Kathleen said with a stiff smile ma-king Pete go over all they had said earlier in his head again so he would see if he said something wrong.

When he couldn’t find any faults with what he had said, he decided to turn the table, “So what about? Why did you let me k!ssyou?”

“I was just… curious.” Kathleen said ma-king Pete raise a brow.

“You were curious? About what?” He asked in confusion.

“I guess I wanted to see if sparks would fly as they do in movies and novels.” She said with a shrug. No need telling him she had actually wanted to see if it would be as she had dreamt about several times. She would die of embarr@ssment and humiliation if he ever found out she had such £r0ticdreams of him.

“But you probably didn’t feel anything because your eyes were open and you were praying to God to forgive you instead of focusing on the k!ss.” Pete guessed, but Kathleen said nothing.

“Was that your first k!ss?” He asked after some time ma-king Kathleen shift uncomfortably in her seat.

Why did she have to feel uncomfortable and ashamed to admit that it was her first k!ss? Wasn’t it supposed to be something she was to be proud of? Yes she knew she was supposed to be proud of it, but the people of the world had succeeded in ma-king something so Honorable feel very shameful. She didn’t want him to start think she was naive and silly for having had her first k!ssat the age of twenty-eight.

“It was your first k!ss.” Pete said, sounding genuinely surprised by the knowledge that a beautiful grown up lady like herself was this pure.

“I didn’t say so.” Kathleen murmured.

“You didn’t have to. And I must admit I’m disappointed in you for feeling ashamed over admitting something like that.” Pete said with a shake of his head.

“I never said I was ashamed.” Kathleen said defensively.

“You don’t have to. It’s quite obvious that you feel embarr@ssed by it. I’m really glad my daughter has someone like you as her caretaker.” Pete said ma-king Kathleen relax a bit.

“So I gave you your first k!ss.” Pete said with a grin, “Remind me next time, to k!ssyou until sparks fly.” Pete added, and chuckled when Kathleen hissed something inaudible un-der her breath.
______________

“Haba mummy! Relax nau!”

“I was just asking a simple question nau. What is the problem?” She asked with a smile.

“You remember Amaka?” He asked ma-king the smile vanish from his mother’s face.

“That stupid girl that broke your heart? The one you made me pay her fees for three years yet she left you for older men?” She asked ma-king Eric wince.

“Yeah.”

“What about her? Don’t tell me you’re still interested in her.” His mother asked harshly.

“No. I’m not. The thing is, I found out she’s married to Kimberly’s father.”

“What? When did you find out?”

“Mom that isn’t the point right now. The thing is she’s acting all silly and coming close to me, asking me to forget the past so we can move on…”

“Move on? I don’t un-derstand. What does she mean move on?” His mother asked angrily.

“Mummy calm down na, I’m not done you’re angry alre-ady.” Eric said with a chuckle.

“You know me. I don’t like to hear nons-en-se. Don’t tell me that idiot thinks she can come back into your life o, cause even if she uses Jax or anything to make you change your mind about her, I will kill her. You know me.” His mother threatened.

“Don’t worry, I’m really not interested in her. I’m just wondering whether or not I should tell Kimberly about it, and what I should also do about her. I don’t want her to cause problems for me.” Eric explained.

“They haven’t given birth to the person that will cause problems for any of my children. She won’t even try it! If she comes anywhere close to you, I will personally disgrace her. And as for Kimberly, it might be too early for her to know about that, so spend time in building your relationsh!pwith her, when you’ve established trust, you can confide in her about it. Besides, telling her about your past relationsh!pwith Amaka is synonymous to telling her who you truly are, and you can’t do that yet, can you?” She asked ma-king Eric sigh. She was right.

“I can’t.”

“Good. So don’t worry about Amaka. s£nd me her number and I’ll take care of it.” She promised.

“Why am I feeling like mummy’s boy right now?” Eric asked ma-king his mother laugh.

“We both know you’re far from that. And we also know had you not been on this bet with your father you would have handled things as you should. The only reason I’m stepping in is because I know you don’t want Kimberly to know about you yet. So don’t worry about it.” She @ssured him.

“Alright. I’ll text you her number, thanks. I’ll be waiting for the phone numbers of the thera-pist.” Eric reminded her before disconnecting the call.

He returned in,side to find Kimberly seated at the dinning table with her phone in her hand and a frown on her face, “You finally decided to come out of hiding?” He asked with a teasing smile.

“Where were you?” She asked, looking at him with a stony facial expression.

“I was speaking with my mom over the phone. Why?”

“I’m just wondering why you have to go outside to take a phone call. The last time she called you excused yourself from where I was too. Are you married?” She asked ma-king Eric look at her in surprise.

“Of course I’m married to you.” He reminded her.

“Not to me. Are you really married? Is there a woman somewhere you’re in a relationsh!pwith? Is she the one you’re always excusing yourself to talk to? Is that why I can’t meet your family?” Kimberly asked ma-king Eric wonder where her suspicions were coming from.

“What is this about?”

“You know you can tell me the truth, right? It’s not like we are in love or anything. It’s just a fake contract marriage so you’re free to do whatever…”

“Shut up!” Eric told her quietly.

“… You like. So there’s absolutely no need for you to hide when ma-king your phone calls.” Kimberly continued, ignoring the warning in his voice.

“Where is all this coming from?” Eric asked in confusion, but Kimberly said nothing as she stood up and headed for her be-droom. Immediately she got into her be-droom she locked the door with the key, and raised a hand to her che-st where her heart was aching and beating heavily as she sat on the be-d. Her head was beginning to ache and she was beginning to feel like she needed a drink. She rummaged throu-gh her be-droom drawer, and then her bags until she found her shisha pen.

“Kimberly? Kim?” Eric called as he knocked on her door. What could possibly be the problem? One minute she was running away from him because she was embarr@ssed about k!ss!nghim, and now she was indirectly accusing him of not being honest?

Kimberly said nothing as he knocked, but she focused on puffing from her shisha pen. She had been busy with the do¢vment when Amaka’s call had come in earlier.

“Why are you calling when you only just left here?” Kimberly had asked Immediately she took the call.

“I was worried about something earlier, but I couldn’t air my mind because I didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable especially in the pres£nce of your father.” Amaka had said ma-king Kimberly frown.

“What is that?”

“Your husband, how much do you know about him? Like where he comes from, who his family are, where they live etcetera.”

“I know his house.” Kimberly had said with a confused frown as she wondered what Amaka was driving at.

“I’m asking because it doesn’t make s-en-se that as a Nigerian lady, you don’t know anything about your husband’s background. What if he is a bad person and he steals all your money, how will you trace him? Although I don’t un-derstand how you both got to meet, but your marriage seems like one of those contract marriages we re-ad about in novels and see in movies. I hope you know that one happens only in the western world where they can easily trace criminals with f!nger print and all that. We don’t have such technologies in Nigeria, so even if he does something to you, he could disappear without trace.” Amaka had said, giving Kimberly goosebu-mps at the thought of it.

“…”

“I’m not saying he is a bad person o, I’m just saying you should watch him carefully to make sure he isn’t hiding anything from you. He could even be married with kids and you won’t know. So just be careful, okay? I need to go prepare your father’s dinner now. Goodnight.” Amaka had said before ending the call.

Since Eric was bent on using Kimberly to make her jealous, she was going to make sure he wouldn’t have peace in the marriage, Amaka promised herself. She intended to see how he was going to enjoy the stupid honeymoon.
