“Alice…” Samuel muttered

“Is she your wife?” Fred asked.

Samuel hesitated a little before answering.

“Yeah, she is..” He said almost in a whisper.

“How come she’s involved in in vitro fertilization? Besides that name is ringing bell in my head…I’ve heard that name somewhere…but can’t really remember.” Fred said.

Although, Fred was Samuel’s friend back in school, he haven’t seen the reason to tell him everything happening even if he would…it wouldn’t be today.

“I gotta go now.”

“Your contact…so I’d call you later.” Fred said giving him his phone

Samuel typed his number and gave it to him back.

“Thanks. Are you sure you’re okay? Can you drive?” Fred asked worriedly.

“Yeah ..I’m fine. Thank you. We’d talk later.” Samuel said and left Fred’s office after they shook hands together.

Samuel head was light…it’s as if he was a living dead.

Different questions were forming in his head but got no right answers to them

He drove to the hospital anyways…although he didn’t feel like doing a thing. All that’s in his head that time was Alice.

Fred was still thinking about where he had heard about the name – Alice.

He picked his phone and made a call to his old friend – George.

George was in his house drinking as usual. As well as smoking. He was seated on the floor in his sitting room.

He was in deep thought…

“How do I go about this?” He thought.

“Alice really wouldn’t go scot free not after making me into who I am today. She MUST PAY!” he scre-med loudly smashing a bottle of alcohol to the ground angrily.

It shattered to the wh0le place.

“Alice….you bastard. You dare think you could have a fulfilling life after what you did to me? NO!!!” he scre-med again.

Just then, his phone rang.

Drunkingly, he located his phone that was right beside him. He stared at it in his drunk state and despite staring intently at it, he knew not who the called was.

📲hello…do you who is speaking?

He replied drunkingly.

📲It’s Fred

📞 ohh….” He laughed sarcastically.

📞i thought you said you’re never gonna call me again if I don’t desist from my act. Well, for your information, I’m still very much into it.

📲okay. Put that aside. Alice…do you still remember her? I mean…were you able to marry her as your wife?

George laughed hærd.

📞that motherf-cker will never be my wife.

No response…George has slept off. His phone has slipped away from his grip.

Fred sighed heavily.

“No wonder…I knew I’ve heard about that name before.” He said.

George has been his childhood friend before he went to school and met Samuel.

George was known to be a wayward guy all his life and when he didn’t quit being wayward, Fred cut all ties with him telling him he’d only be friend with him again if he stop being a bad guy.

But, Fred knew about Alice since their primary school days.

Although, Samuel didn’t say a word to him earlier, he understand the wh0le thing.

“Samuel must heard about this…” Fred said and made to call him but a nurse walked in telling him he’s needed in Emergency ward.

He stood up with his stethoscope and followed her.

Samuel drove slowly like a snail to the hospital and eventually reached there after some minutes.

He entered the building absentmindedly with heavy thoughts. He was at the verge of breaking down into hot tears but he’s a man and has to behave like one.

Cindy on sighting him rushed to him after seeing his mood and the expression on his face.

Without hearing a word from him, she knew something was up.

“Samue….. doctor Samuel What’s up with you?” She asked eagerly.

“Cindy…Cindy…Alice… Alice is a devil.” he tried to say.

Cindy was confused.

“Devil as how?” She probed.

Samuel didn’t know what else to do…he engulfed Cindy into a hug…tight hug filled with different emotions.

Cindy didn’t asked him any other thing. She knew this is what he needed for now. She helped in patting his back like a baby telling him to calm down.

Samuel rested his head on Cindy’s shoulder with his eyes closed.

When Cindy knew he’s not ready to break the hug anytime soon…and they’re at work even some souls has been watching them already.

She parted from him making him to face him. She said no word as she just held his hand and walked towards the exit.

Soon they’re in Samuel’s car. She had collected the car key from him when they got outside.

She had opened the car door for him to entered and she had closed it back before walking to the driver’s seat.

Samuel was just watching not able to do a thing or say anything.

Cindy drove out of the hospital heading to her mansion.

Yeah…Cindy gave herself a mansion for her last birthday. She’s still preparing her next birthday gift in earnest.

The drive to her large mansion was in silent. No one said a word to each other. Samuel would sighed heavily sometimes.

Soon, they were at the entrance…the security opened the giant gate for her after verifying it’s really her.

The only two souls in the mansion is the security man and a cleaner.

She drove in and parked the car besides her two cars. She killed the engine and stepped out of the car.

“Welcome miss.” The security man greeted beaming in smiles.

“Thank you.” Cindy answered walking over to open the car door for Samuel.

He got down exhaustedly walking beside Cindy till they got in,side the large and spacious living room painted white.

“Have a seat.” She offered.

Samuel sat down heavily on a couch – two sitter couch.

Cindy sat beside him and unbuttoned his first two shirt buttons.

“I knew what you’re gonna say isn’t what to be said in public. I’d have taken you to a restaurant or my office at work. I guess we need some privacy.” Cindy said.

Samuel gave no reply.

“Erm…. there’s nothing to eat or drink here but I can place an order. What do you care to take?” Cindy asked staring at him.

“Don’t worry. Do not bother placing any order. I’m fine.” Samuel answered.

“but…You need to take something. This state you are is scaring me.” Cindy said care written in her voice.

“Cindy…tell me. do I have what it takes to be an husband f?” He asked.

“Yes, Samuel. The time I’ve spent with you really shows you are one. Best one at that.” Cindy replied.

“What happened to Alice?” Cindy asked eagerly.

“I’m divorcing her right away!” Samuel said rising to his feet.

He took three steps forward backing Cindy who was still seated shocked to hear what Samuel just spat out.

“What?! What the hell do you mean by DIVORCE?” do you know what divorcing your wife means? Samuel, what has your wife done to deserve a divorce paper from you?” Cindy asked.

She heard him chuckled.

“You talked like that in favor of Alice ’cause you thought she’s like you whereas she’s not to be called a wife.” Samuel said.

Cindy sighed.

“Tell me more. Make me understand.” Cindy said.

“Alice couldn’t conceive for me for the past 2years going to 3years now. So, she went for in vitro fertilization, this is the fourth time spending millions of naira on it. But this time, I was told she didn’t go for the IVF last three weeks whereas she told me they’ve implanted the thing in her.” Samuel explained.

Cindy was short of words. It’s too much to swallow at once. She knew Alice hasn’t given birth but she never knew she has issues with giving birth.

Samuel seeing she didn’t say anything continued.

“On your mum’s party, the guy you said she’s seeing came to us.” He was interrupted.

“What?” She almost scre-med.

Samuel sighed sadly.

“He was about to show me the evidence he has when your boyfriend’s sister showed up. immediately she came to us, Alice fainted.” Samuel explained.

Cindy was too overwhelmed with shocking astonishment. She couldn’t utter a single word even when her head was full of questions.

“Tell me, isn’t that enough to divorce her? If she didn’t find money to give to George to keep her secret again, won’t she get rid of me to get money for him?” Samuel said putting his two hands in his trouser pockets.

Cindy stood up and walked to him.

“She can never do that to you. I know how you feel but exercise more patience. If you break up with her now, how are you gonna find out about what she is keeping away from you? Please calm down for a little while if not for her but for me. So that we’d get to know what else she’s keeping. I feel there’s something more bigger than this that she’s hiding from you.” Cindy said.

“I’m divorcing her right away. I don’t want to know any other f*cking thing she’s hiding from me. All I want is that I dont wanna see her again.” Samuel said angrily.

Cindy hugged him from behind. Her hands wrapped around his body.

“Calm down at least for my sake Samuel. This is a delicate issue. We gotta handle it gently with steps. Don’t let’s rush things. Even if you’re gonna divorce her like you said, it shouldn’t be in a hurry. Breath in and out and stop your anger. Please…”. Cindy said soothingly.

Samuel was silent not saying anything or removing her hands from his body.

Cindy continued..

“I can’t believe your wife is like this but we need to exercise patience. Don’t even let her know you’ve got to know about her not going for the IVF stuff. Just act like you knew nothing for you to get access to the truth.” She said.

Samuel removed her hands away from his body and walked away from her to sat on a nearby couch.

Cindy watched him and went to him.

“Please….Sam.” Cindy pleaded.

“Cindy….it’s not easy like you said it. Do you know how I felt after getting to know my wife…the one I’ve loved and cared for betrayed me? Even if no one believes me, you yourself knew I have no other person except her. Seriously, I don’t know what else she want? Should I just behead myself for her?” Samuel said.

Cindy sat beside him.

*I understand what you’re saying and how you felt. But still, act like a man. You don’t need to do like a coward. Act like a man you are!” Cindy shouted.

“My wife…Alice.” Samuel muttered.

“Calm down…you..” She winced in pains.

“What happened?” Samuel asked.

“My…ouch uhh” she gro-ned.

“What happened to you?” He asked worriedly.

The pains subsided.

“I’m okay now. Just some pain in my abdomen.” She replied.

“This is the second time you’d be feeling that same pain in the same s₱0t in my presence. Are you sure you’re okay?” Samuel asked holding her hand.

“Yeah…I’m fine.” Cindy answered smiling a little.

“Okay…as I was saying, calm down for you to know what rely she is hiding. I’m sure the guy will come back. And that time, make sure no one interrupt.” Cindy said.

“Okay…thank you.” Samuel said.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.”

Then, his phone rang.

Unknown number… He picked it anyways.

📲Samuel…

📞Fred?

📲yeah. Where are you? Can you talk there?

📞yeah. What is is?

📲your wife…I just remembered where I’ve knew her.

📞okay…what is that?

📞tell me! He almost scre-m.

📲according to her previous ex boyfriend, he told me she can never conceive due to the series of abortions she HD when with him..

Samuel felt the time stopped for a moment.

Cindy was wondering but seeing Samuel’s phone was almost falling from his phone, she collected it and places it on her ear.

Cindy was quiet for a while before responding.

“Really?” Was all what Samuel could utter.

“Yeah.” Cindy answers.
