A WIFE FOR MY SON

Chapter 1.

“Happy birthday Mom” David cheered his mother with a radiant smile.

“Oh thanks son, can’t believe I just clocked 54… gosh am really grateful to God Almighty!” Maggie said enthusiastically waving her hand to a few of her guests that smiled her way.

The Johnson’s big family house was all filled up, celebrating the lady of the house’s birthday is something that every d*ck and harry waits expectantly for every year.

David’s father, the man he’s named after, the great Davidson was an influencial man.He died two years ago after his 60th birthday celebration.

It was really a great loss to the wh0le people,the demise of an icon,a man like no other.

Though today is not as good as those days when he’s still alive, but people littered the wh0le compound even to the outside.

All the gates where widely open with security men on guard.The only place with a few people is in,side the parlour.

David met his mother talking to one of her friends Florence over a bottle of wine, he decided to spend time with her when her friend left since they will soon be sorrounded with friends and well wishers on the family table.

“Well, I didn’t know what to get for you as a birthday gift,but I got something anyway”David said watching his mother in a guess-what manner raising his brow.

“And what is that?”Maggie asked praying inwardly that God finally answered her prayer,David had brought a woman!

“Guess what!”

“Mmm, you brought a lady! Oh David I can’t wait to see her” Maggie exclaimed looking around for his date.

“Mom?…what’s that?, you are joking right?,I mean when did a lady become a birthday gift?”David said making a pft sound.

“David don’t tell me you don’t have a date”Maggie said lowering her voice.

“Mom, happy birthday, this is for you” he gave her an emerald necklace and added “age gracefully mom” he left her moping after him.

“Jeeez!”Maggie took a deep breath and looked at the necklace he handed her, very expensive and beautiful but a woman would have made a best gift for as far as she’s concerned.

She needs to carry her grand children and not a necklace, she already has alot of that.

“Trying to make me look stupid huh?”Maggie mumbled, she didn’t know when her daughter came behind her.

“Mom here you are! the guests are waiting we need to join the table now”Tricia whispered close to her ear.

Maggie almost jumped at the moment but Tiana’s hands where on her shoulders,it steadied her;”Mom, easy! what are you so caught up with?… where’s David?”Tricia urged on.

“You don’t have to give me heart attack just to ask me too many questions,which one should I answer first?”Maggie replied heading for their table, Tricia fell into step with her, they moved gracefully to their positions.

Tricia gave her mom a disdainful look demanding that she stops beating around the bush and go straight to the point.

“Your brother left simply because I told him to show me his date, obviously he didn’t have any, so he zoomed off, that’s why you saw me like that. Am I gonna have some sweet breath now?!”Maggie explained hurriedly.

The guests are filling up the table, which didn’t give them more room for private talk, so the event went on without David around, Maggie didn’t much appreciate that.

David better watch out he’s in for alot of trouble after this celebration, he has alot of questions to answer to.

“Why did you leave the house yesterday?”Tricia asked David taking care not to cut her finger, she’s doing her manicure.

She sat beside David who was too engrossed with whatever he’s doing with his laptop.

“I know your Mom must have told you a hell load of trash about it so don’t give me headache now,too busy for your worries”He said hissing and pressing the buttons h-rder.

His laptop has been giving him alot of trouble, and he couldn’t fix it, he so much despise it.

“Oh wow!,am worrying you right?,no problem….. I shouldn’t have come here in the first place, I know I made a huge mistake and am sorry,bye”Tiana said in a final tone , raising her hands in surrender,she took her bag to leave.

“Hey common,it hasn’t gotten to that baby, you have got to understand”he snapped his laptop shut and ran to grab her hand.

He should have known how easy it is to get his sister angry, sometimes he pities the man that will put a ring on it, he will live the rest of his life begging for forgiveness over simple matters.

“Please don’t touch me jhoor, I mean what bad have I said to you, simply because I asked you a question, you have to talk to me in such manner, anyways am going back to school tomorrow so don’t bother getting more worries from me”She said avoiding his face because he knows the implications of her last sentence, he will give her money for school of course!.

“Ok fine,hope you will forgive my bad use of words at Least”he said eyeing her.

“Yes but that depends on what you can do”she looked at his face smiling.

“Mm I know, I will see what I can do,trust me…now sit down let me get us a wine”he pushed her to a seat.That’s it!, sister and brother…….best of friends….

“Are you about to bribe me?!”she shouted after him.

“You can call it anything!”he returned.

“But it still surprises me that you of all people,MR LOVER BOY ‘don’t have a girl ,I don’t quite understand that”

David came in,side the parlour, offered her a glass of wine and took a sip from his own glass then replied;

“It’s then,not now,..those ladies are all bunch of gold diggers ,all of them…when I meet her,I will settle down,for now let me enjoy my freedom,

am not ready for all their naggings,am not done dealing with yours! you can go get married you know?” he dralwed and they laughed over the last words ……

Maggie and her best friend ‘Agnes’ where sitted on the corridor, each held a glass of orange juice at hand.

“Agnes dear, thanks for coming yesterday, I really appreciate” Maggie said grateful to her friend who came to her birthday party.

“Please dear don’t mention it, if I were in your shoes, you will do much more than coming, I feel really bad that I didn’t get you something nice for a gift… something worthwhile, but not to worry, I won’t promise you anything now, but I will do more next year” Agnes said with so much alacrity.

“No dear, stop that, what could I have done yesterday without you, I am really happy dear ….a friend in need is a friend indeed”

“Oh yeah…what are friends for”
They took a sip from their glasses almost at the same time, then Agnes cleared her throat thoughtfully and asked;

“How about David, why did he leave early yesterday?”

“Well dear, I don’t know what’s wrong with my son, anytime marriage issue is brought up, it pisses him off, actually, I asked him yesterday if he has a date, he simply left angrily” Maggie is worried, it’s written all over her face as she speaks.

“That really surprises me, because I remember vividly when you report his excess date of girls to me. I mean I saw for myself how he carries women around.How he suddenly turns to be the David that you are referring to now is what I can’t fathom” Agnes said thoughtful .

“I don’t know what to do Agnes, people are talking dear and I can’t blame them, who would have a son that’s aged 33 whom is not seen to have a lady in his life and would not hear people talking behind. Sometimes I fear that my son has turned g-y”

“God forbid! don’t talk such nonsense against your son Maggie”Agnes rejected snapping her fingers.

“What do you suggest I do? Apart from me wanting so dearly to hold my grand children, I also do not want my son to remain lonely, he needs a woman in his life” Maggie said lowly.

Agnes responded quietly;
“Why don’t you get him a wife”

When Maggie rolled her eyes, she added….
“I mean you should arrange a woman for him, if you wait on him, with the way things are going, am afraid it might get out of hand”

“That’s odd you know, he won’t even hear of that”

“You don’t have to tell him, anyways, however you are going to do it, do it. Don’t let your son remain a bachelor Maggie…Everyman needs that perfect woman in his life, and you are in a better position to know what’s good for him, don’t tell me that’s odd, sometimes old school kind of life is the best”Agnes took a sip of her juice and practically crossed her legs.

“Well then, I will see to it. Enough about my son Aggie, let’s talk about your daughter’s suitor, your daughter really has eyes for good things I must confess” Maggie changed the subject.

“Oh yes! Am so happy for my baby girl, she deserves the best dear”

They laughed over the comment when Tricia drove in .She packed her car right beside her mother’s car and jumped out, all smiles as she approached them.

“Hey Mom, aunty Aggie”she hugged Agnes and gave her Mom a peck on the cheek.

“Thought you have gone back to school” Agnes stated.

“Nope, actually I will leave tomorrow, have gone to get some things and then to David’s” Tricia explained plainly.

“Alright honey, ahm .. Maggie I must take my leave now, my in-law is visiting this evening, I need to touch some certain things before he arrives” Agnes said standing.

“Aunt? am I chasing you away?” Tricia asked flatly.

“Help me ask her sweetie” Her mother supported.

“No, that’s not the case.You should understand Maggie, don’t make this more awful old lady”

They laughed and Maggie stood to see her off.

“Tricia? let me see the young lady out” Maggie teased, they choked over laughter.

“This means I am a baby lady, so the babylady should be in,side waiting for the old lady who’s seeing the young lady out”. Tricia added to the list of cracked joke.
Their voices roared in laughter.

***. *****. ****.

Tricia picked a few of her clothes and threw it on her queen-size bed, she brought her traveling bag and started packing her clothes fold by fold into it.

She had stuffed two earpiece safely into her ears and it played Celine Dion’s ‘I’m alive ‘single song loudly, she shaked her head to it, she was too engrossed that she didn’t notice her mom come in.

“Tricia?!” Maggie received no response from her, she sat quietly on the bed and touched her lightly on the arm.

“Oh Mom!” she beamed taking off the earphones, all smiles.

My baby that smiles always but gets angry easily, some man is really going to suffer in her hands; ‘Maggie thought looking at her proudly.

“You leaving me alone tomorrow huh?!”

“The housekeeper is here Mom don’t make me miss you already” Tricia said hugging her .

“You know, it would have been really easy for me if David is married, I wouldn’t mind you leaving, Grace the housekeeper is always busy, we have little time to chat ”

“Mmm, that’s true, and…..Mom I wonder what’s keeping David from getting a wife, I mean he suddenly changed and now he always fuses when I talk to him about it”

“I don’t know o…..I don’t really know,I feel so bad about it,I don’t know what to do Tricia,my enemies are at work”

“Don’t worry Mom, he will get over whatever it is and he will surely come around, he’s probably still searching for the right one”

Maggie nodded and mouthed amen towards heaven as if she’s seeing God and communicating silently with Him.
She helped her daughter pack her clothes.

“Mom there’s nothing to worry about, our holiday is on the way,it’s two or three weeks from now, I will be back to spend it with you, so don’t miss me alot”she laughed huskily.

“Mom is always here waiting with a welcoming arm” Maggie felt relieved.

At least she won’t spend much days lonely,till God answers her prayer.
