“YOU’LL DIE. BUT YOU CAN’T DO THAT WITHOUT PEACE OF MIND IN THE GRAVE. ARE YOU READY FOR ME?”

That message sounded more like Crucifix’ peace of mind and it couldn’t be anyone else except Linda. But how the hell did the girl know that she was his peace of mind and how could she possibly give that to him because, truly, Crucifix was really restless, troubled, restive, anxious and unsettled especially now the police was fastly closing up on him on the murder of Lucy Oman?

He stood lostfully beside their mud house, reasoning all that with the phone in his hand. He just wanted everything to stop in any way possible, so if Linda could do that, he wouldn’t mind to accept any condition given to him. But if it was entangling with her s-xually or emotionally forever, he wasn’t sure if he could do that. Nevertheless, he replied the message thus: I’M READY.

“But wait.” he began to think. “She said I’ll get this peace of mind in the grave. If I’m gonna die, then why does she care to give me a peace of mind? Oh, shit! This is so confusing!” Just then, a reply message vibrated his phone: KINGS LAYOUT. 30 MINUTES.

Briskly, he returned to the house, flung his bag and carried his bicycle. Fast and furious, he rode on the road like someone on a life race. The sunset reflected behind him as he wanted to overtake a trailer, but the scary horn of the trailer nearly scared him to the gutter. He held the break of the bicycle, put down his legs, waiting for the trailer to passed with her trouble. Immediately the trailer zoomed off, a black van double-crossed him. He watched the door roll aside to see men in black and guns.

“Get in here, mind reader.” One of them commanded.

Crucifix hilariously carried his bicycle on his head to enter into the van. Getting to the door, one of the men kicked the bicycle off and dragged him in,side forcefully. The door rolled closed.

“Man, that bicycle was the only thing I had.” Crucifix lamented in the van. Yet, none of them talked to him. “Listen, whoever you are, you gonna pull those triggers on me because I’m already a walking corpe. My life will never gonna get better, unless in the grave. So i don’t give a f-ck what you gonna do to me, but you must get my bicycle back.”

“You’re a clown.” one of them replied……

On the other hand, Ero just came out from the casino with a stick of weed in his mouth. He wanted to get into his car when policemen surrounded him. Some smoke of weed saturated the place when he blew off a large quantity to the air, staring at Foster whom he was familiar with.

“Hey, Foster.” he grinned with hands spread. “For what do I owe this visit? The last time I checked, I’ve not broken any law.”

“We didn’t come for you, Ero.” Foster approached. “We came as a result of one of your men, James Amos. We did a background check on him and confirmed that he was one of your men shot dead at Crucifix’ residence. He was protecting the mind reader for you, wasn’t he?”

Ero exhaled. He didn’t reply rather drew another smoke of weed through his mouth and popped some through his noise.

“Ero, you know me. If you don’t want the feds to start looking into you, you have to tell us what you know.” Foster persuaded.

“Fine, James died, protecting the mind reader.” he replied.

“What of the second time someone attempted to kill him? What really happened that day?”

“Come on, Foster. You’re making me look like a snitch. Wait, why are you even investigating the boy instead of those that wanted him dead?”

“I think the boy knows those that wanted him dead and he’s covering up for them for a reason.”

“The second time, his girlfriend, Margret was kidnapped and they requested for his presence alone. I couldn’t allow it, so I sent some men after him who saved him again? You’re not gonna arrest me for being the boy’s savior, are you?”

Foster smiled. “No, but where did this take place.?” he asked.

“In one uncompleted building at Krest.” Ero replied.

“Krest?” Foster repeated. “That’s the same place Lucy’s body was found.” he murmured thoughtfully. “Thank you for your time, Ero.” he stepped away from there.

“Do not hurt the kid, Foster. He’s a good kid!” He finally entered into his car.

Sadly, the police were very close in catching the mind reader for the murder of Lucy Oman.

At the airport, one could see Emmanuel in the black Camry with his father. The boy drove him to the airport through which the father would make a fast journey to the neighboring state, so the man stepped down from the car.

“Safe flight, Dad.” Emmanuel told him.

“Thank you, son.” The man began to walk into the reception.

Through the glass of the driver’s seat, Emmanuel saw a beautiful damsel, coming down from an airplane through a read carpet. She wore a black elastic trouser over a black jacket with a zip from the base to the top. She also wore sunglasses and bold earrings. In her hand was a black traveling bag while on her feet were high heel shoes. She was the same age and height with Crucifix. Oh, Emmanuel said he didn’t want to fall in love again, but this girl must not pass him by. Quickly, he drove to her and said, “Looking for a taxi? Here I am. Where are you going to, pretty girl?”

The girl looked at him in the eyes then smiled. She opened the back door and entered. “Take me to the main town.” she said.

“Give me an address, please.”

“Just drive. When I say stop, you stop.”

“Anything you say, my love.” he ignited the car as the girl smiled again. Emmanuel kept admiring her through the center mirror. “So I’m Emmanuel. What are you called?” he asked.

The girl ignored him. Her phone rang at the moment then she picked up. “I’m just leaving the airport now.” she said through the phone. Just then, police car passed, wailing it’s siren continuously. Seeing it, Emmanuel remembered Crucifix and how he was in trouble with Lucy’s murder directly or indirectly. Already, the girl at the back seat had been staring at him through the same mirror.

“Who is Crucifix?” She asked him.

“What?” Emmanuel glanced at the mirror. “How did you know that name?”

“The same way I knew that you’re not a taxi driver. You just thought about someone named Crucifix.”

Immediately, Emmanuel pulled over. He fully looked back at the girl. “You’re a mind reader.”

“My name is Hee, Emma, and I’m nobody. Now, can you keep driving?” the girl frowned…..

The sun had totally gone down when the van drove into another warehouse and pulled over. The door rolled open slowly. The men jumped out followed by Crucifix who saw the gate of the house gradually closing. He looked around to see nothing but heeps of carton, probably filled with drugs. He turned to see Mr. Adams and Nelson then exhaled sharply as he was being dragged to them like a criminal.

“Let me believe that you’re not the one that sent me that text message.” Crucifix’ voice echoed in the house.

“Let us also believe that you know you’re going to die since you saw the message.” Mr. Nelson replied.

Crucifix shook his head because for a moment, he thought Linda was the one and would have helped out in any way possible, not knowing that he just walked into his doom. “Now, what? You both gonna kill me? For what exactly?” he spread his hands.

“You have been running your mouth like a tap!” Mr. Adams’ voice angrily soared.

“You revealed my identity to my daughter! How dare you!!” Mr. Nelson shouted too.

“I did no such thing!!” Crucifix shouted on top of their voices. “Raina is very smart. She has even figured out that I killed Lucy! She believed you sent me to do it though. I swear to God I’ve been hundred percent pure to you both!! Trust me!”

Tension rose among them along with quietness. Mr. Adam signaled one of the men to aim his gun at Crucifix then wait for his permission to pull the trigger. Seeing the gun pointing at him, Crucifix looked up at the two men without knowing what to say. “So this is how I’m going to die?” He found his voice. It was very low and heartbreaking.

“We just want to do what we should have done long ago” Mr. Nelson said.

Crucifix turned to Adams. “We had a deal. You made me kill Lucy because you promise to make sure your daughter marries me. We had a deal!!” he shouted in tears. “It’s not even that. I love Margret so much and she loves me too. Please, don’t do this.”

“We have to.” Adams looked at the man with the gun.

“Wait wait wait..” Crucifix stretched his hands forward defensively as the tears continued pouring out. “At least, listen to my story before I die.” he began. “I’m close to eighteen now. We moved to town, running from problems which I created unwillingly. I was humiliated and expelled from several schools that I swore never to go back to school again. But the very day I set my eyes on Margret, I forgot all that. She made me to register at Kenny High where I struggled to be of good behavior and stay away from trouble, yet, Jimmy happened to me again. Not after someone used my identity to f-ck your daughter, Margret, because she thought the very person was me! All of a sudden, bullets started flying over my head from both of you!!” He pointed his finger at the two men who listened to the boy’s lamentation. “Where did I go wrong? Huh, tell me. What did I do to you both? Because of the fear of lovcilia, I agreed to kill my friend Lucy!! Lucy loved me regardless how I humiliated her. I didn’t love her, yet she prayed for me to be alive! She was a good friend but you made me kill her. Oh, God, forgive me.” he broke down in a total cry. “Where did I go wrong? Is loving your daughter a crime?” He sobered.

Immediately, his cell phone rang. As he reached out to his pocket to bring it out, the man’s hand engulfed the trigger, still waiting for the permission to pull. Crucifix looked at the caller and showed it to the men. “See, Margret is the one calling.” He continued. “How do you think she will feel if I’m dead. Think about it, please.” He swallowed hærd. “If you let him pull the trigger, sir, and your daughter finds out later on, she will never forgive you. So I’m just gonna walk out here, hoping I don’t catch a bullet behind me.” He turned and began to walk towards the gate, sniffing in tears and drying them at the same time.

Just before he got to the gate, Adams called him, “Crucifix..”

The boy turned.

“Margret isn’t my daughter and I will never let her marry you. Unless you do that six fit under the ground.” Adams finally gave the order and the man pulled the trigger once. Sadly, the boy caught the bullet on his stomach and fell down….

in,side Margret’s room where she was still trying Crucifix’ line, pacing restlessly in a bomshort, the energy of Crucifix’ death pushed the phone from her hand and hit the floor. The phone broke beyond repair. “Oh, my God!” she gasped, walking back to the wall of the room where she slowly slide down on the floor, staring at the phone. She couldn’t explain the scene…

At the same time at Raina’s, the young girl was bringing down a pot of soup from a gas cooker, all of a sudden, it slid from her hand and poured on the floor by the energy of Crucifix’ death. She gasped, feeling the increasing rate of her heartbeat. Quickly, she ran to the living room where her cell phone was. Unlike Margret, she could explain the scene. So she dialed her father’s number first which he didn’t pick up. Secondly, she dialed Crucifix’ yet no answer. The girl bursted out in tears…

Back to the warehouse, Crucifix laid on his own pool of blood with a hand, covering the bullet would as blood kept pumping out from his mouth. Silence creeped into the warehouse over the painful death of the innocent boy who only was in pursuit of education, love and peace of mind like every other teenager. Suddenly, Mr. Nelson’s shoes echoed, surging forward to pick the boy’s cell phone. Instantly, the gate of the warehouse open. They all saw a black girl with black attire all over. On her feet were black high heel too while in her hands rested M2 raffle. Yes, you’re correct; it was Hee!

The girl opened fire on everyone in the warehouse who also returned the fire, but she quickly took cover behind a pillar, yet releasing bullets occasionally. Mr. Adams luckily found an escape route, but Nelson wasn’t so lucky. Hee killed the last man with a gun then hurried to Mr. Nelson who wanted to find his route too. “Stop and turn around.” she commanded.

The man turned frighteningly, shivering like a wet rat. “Please, don’t kill me. I have a daughter.”

“Yes, which her name is Raina and you’re Nelson. Do you know who I am? I’m Hee, the mind reader.”

“Wait, you’re the mind reader revealed to us by the chief priest? I thought he said he was a ‘he’ not ‘she'”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but yes, he was correct, I’m ‘Hee’.” she pulled the trigger on the man’s head. Mr. Nelson did not only fall down, he also urinated on his body as he journeyed to the land of the dead. Immediately, police siren wailed from afar and Hee disappeared.

Wow, could she be Crucifix’ sister or twin sister because definitely, she was a mind reader just like the boy, a descendant of Omar. Emmanuel could testify on that. But if yes, why was she sent to kill the two men which, of course, one of them was still alive. Oh, poor Crucifix, after everything, the boy was the wrong target by the drug lords. He actually suffered and died for his sister, probably. But Hee never knew there was a mind reader like her in town who was actually lying dead behind her.

Nevertheless, the police arrived to the crime scene. Foster first saw Crucifix then shook his head pitifully. He placed a finger under his neck then shouted. “The boy still has a pulse. He’s still alive! Call an ambulance!!!”

Thank God, Crucifix fought death and was still fighting to be alive regardless how worthless and useless his life was…..
