Finally the day I had been waiting for arrived, it was the day I was going to be admitted to my new school. I was joining form one in a school many miles away from home, it would be my first time to be away from home for so long and that made me excited but at the same time it gave me Goosebumps.
I was excited that I would be away from all the house chores and I would make new friends. My dad usually was away for work during the weekdays and he used to come home over the weekends; he was the one to drive me to school since he was on leave.
“Jayne, I know you feel scared but you will be away for just three months and also mummy and I will be dropping by to check on you once in a while.” My dad said.
His name was Steve; my mum’s name was Lucy. Dad thought that I was scared but on the contrary, I was actually anxious to meet new friends and finally have the prestige of being in high school.
“Jayne, have you packed everything?” My mum asked.
“Yes mum, I packed everything. I am ready to leave now.” I said.
My mum hugged me tightly and bid me goodbye, she had a crucial meeting so she was not coming with us. I got into the car and we drove off.
Dad seemed excited to be the one driving me to school because most times when I was in primary school, it was mum who used to drop me off. The school was about eighty miles away from home; it would take us a couple of hours to get to the school. After about an hour’s drive, we were stuck in traffic.
Dad did not want us to late for admission so we took an exit off the highway, it led into the woods but it would then connect back to the highway ahead of the traffic.
We had barely driven for two kilometres when something struck dad’s jeep. Dad stepped on the acceleration pedal and the car accelerated off leaving a cloud of dust behind us. I looked at the rear mirror and saw a car trailing us from behind.
“Dad, I think we are being followed.” I said.
Dad looked through the side mirror and saw the car trailing us. He observed it for a while then said;
“Jayne, hold on as tight as you can, I got this.”
I always believed in my dad, he was always brave and taught me to be brave. He had even paid for Karate lessons so as to help me to be able to defend myself. I tightened my safety belt and held on to the handle on the edge of the car’s door. Dad sped off and the road was bumpy and rocky, the jeep could not withstand the rough ride for long.
The people chasing us were driving an off-road Ranger, a car meant for such rough roads. The problem was that dad had no idea of what was ahead of him since it was his first time to drive through that route; he followed it just because the car’s GPS indicated that the route would take us back to the highway, ahead of the traffic jam.
Dad accidentally hit a rock and the jeep overturned, he was hit on the head and fell unconscious. I tried waking him up but it was all in vain, the people chasing us finally caught up with us. I saw two men get out of the ranger, they were both holding machetes. One of them grabbed me out of the car and handed me over to the other guy; he then went ahead to feel my dad’s pulse.
“He is alive, just unconscious.” The guys said after he felt that dad still had a pulse.
They were only the two of them, I decided to take my chances and apply what I learnt at the karate school. The two men were so masculine; one blow from any of them would send me to the ICU.
“Take him as well, carry him to the car.” The guy holding me said.
He never expected that a 13year old girl would be rebellious to two giant looking men; I took that to my advantage. I waited until the other guy had placed dad on his shoulders, I then bit the guy holding me on his right hand. He let go off me and I snatched the machete from his left hand. Without any hesitation I chopped off his fingers and rushed towards the guy carrying my dad.
The guy dropped dad and raised his machete, he almost chopped off my head but I dodged and kicked him in his nuts. He dropped the machete and held his balls gro-ning. I stabbed him on both legs and went to deal with the guy I chopped off his fingers.
“Please do not kill me.” He begged.
“I am not a killer but people like you deserve a permanent mark that will make you to forever remember that tables do turn and hunters become the hunted.” I said stabbing him in his both legs as well.
I then took my dad and pulled him to the ranger, he was a tonne of a man. Despite his heavy weight, I managed to get him into the ranger. He had taught me how to drive although he never allowed me to drive on the highway because I did not have a driving license and I was too young to have one.
I could not just watch my dad die in the middle of the woods; I started the car and decided to follow the road to wherever it took me. Before I got to the highway, my dad woke up.
“Hey Jayne, where are we? Whose car is this? He asked.
I stopped the car, looked at my dad and smiled. My dad looked confused, he could not figure out a lot of things.
“Welcome back daddy.” I said smiling.
“What happened? Why is my head aching so bad?” Dad asked.
“Dad, what happened does not matter right now, what matters is you seeing a doctor to be sure that you are fine.” I said.
“You know you cannot be seen by the police driving, right?” Dad asked.
“That is where you come in daddy. But if you cannot drive, I am willing to risk it all for you.” I said still smiling.
Dad got out of the car; he was seated on the back seat since that was where he was lying before he woke up. He opened the driver’s door and hugged me tightly.
“I love You Jayne.” Dad said.
