โœ๏ธ CHAPTER TITLE โœ๏ธ: I PROMISE TO COME TO YOU.

“Did the thought of me having a loving affection towards you ever cross your mind, Princess?” Damien interacted, not finding it difficult to call her by the title, which he just realized in the morning.

First, it was him acting nice to her all of a sudden, and now this question? What would she say to it? Vera was confused about what to think. Confused to the extent of not uttering a word.

“You can say anything to me and I won’t treat you badly. If I would hurt you for finding out the truth, I would have done that earlier and not waiting till this moment,” as if he could sense the confusion in her, Damien uttered kindly.

His eyes didn’t blink away from the hair, he combed it neatly, and the transformation of it surprised him. One would not have known that the butler had such lengthy hair, as she successfully hid it for months.

She has done a great job in keeping it away from Damien and everyone’s eyes. Maybe because Vera hasn’t gotten a haircut in a long time, the hair has started growing back like it was.

If she was to be at her father’s mansion, she would have gotten it trimmed as usual. She was never a fan of lengthy hair, and keeping one suddenly annoys her, each time she combs it. But she’s helpless to do a thing about it.

Vera was enjoying the tingling feeling that came from Damien’s fingers that were working on her hair, but the pleasure didn’t last because when Damien was satisfied that it looked well-combed and pretty, he took the band which she dropped on her lap without saying anything to her.

Mumbling incoherent words which she could not hear but she knew that he muttered something, Damien put the hair in a ponytail for her.
A step away from her so he would glimpse her face clearly, he could not help but smile at his handwork. The last person to receive such treatment from him was Annabel. Damien didn’t have it in mind to do this, but he could not stay away when his mind was tempting him to do it.

Now that he satisfied his urge, he was pleased with the way Vera looked different than he expected. Her face came out looking flawless and pretty. The way her eyes were trying to avoid his gaze made her look so innocent to him and fell for that.

“You don’t look bad,” Damien complemented like it was a casual word for him to say, not minding the sudden expression from the butler, as Damien’s compliment gave her tension.

He did not want to keep himself busy while studying her expression, so he returned the comb and went back to sit beside her. Ready to pour out everything on his mind.

Damien has been cold-hearted for many years, but it was who he forced himself to be. He used to be a nice and carefree guy, who doesn’t seek attention with his words but rather with actions.

Damien was a sweet and caring person. But maybe everyone has a hidden side that only a single mistake could bring out forcefully.

Being a cold-hearted person was a big decision for him to make. Making use of words that were as sharp as the tip of a knife and could penetrate anyone’s mind was what he suddenly developed.

As much as Damien has grown to be tired of women, the butler’s approach is different. He might have not had any special encounters with the princess in the past, but he knew his sharp words would have hurt her before. There was no doubt about it.

It was a woman who broke him. It was a woman who turned him into the beast that he was. The twist in the story which he never expected was that another woman was ready to sacrifice anything for him to be mended.

Not only was she ready to sacrifice anything, she put it into action by coming to him. If Damien wants to roar and punish her, his mind would not do that.

The butler had managed everything and the task given to him well. Damien would not want to be unfair to her by rendering everything useless.

He liked the butler, just that he could not admit it earlier because it was not a good thing to do. There was no tangible way to acknowledge his likeness to the butler because he thought he was a man.

“I was robbed of my family and the presence of my sister years ago,” Damien’s body remained stagnant with only his mouth moving as he decided to share.

“Everything that ruined my family was entirely planned by my stepmother. Although my mother was an accomplice because she was the reason why Crystal got into our home,”

“Let me not say too much about it, I know you’ve gotten to know about the story but it may not be all,” Damien said, without blinking away from her.

“I don’t know whether my body was preparing for it, but I adapted quickly to another version of me that came when I felt betrayed,” he muttered.

“I couldn’t help but blame women entirely for everything. Their stomach is shallow and it carries evil proudly,” Damien gritted his teeth and winced his eyes as he explained, but it wasn’t to scare her.

“Starting from hating Crystal and then judging other women to be like her, there was no second thought to that anyway, they are all callous,” He sharply confirmed, not feeling wrong for all he was saying.

“I consider them evil, and I was not expecting a woman to do what you did for me. Neither have I thought about giving any woman aside Annabel a special place in my life,” he said to see her staring helplessly at the floor. What does he have on his mind??

“I can overlook the effort you put into coming close to me if I want to and settle my wandering mind with the excuse that I wasn’t responsible for that because truly I wasn’t the one who called you here,” Damien spoke without hiding his emotion.

“But I can’t do that, because I’m still convinced. I’m convinced that for a princess to neglect her magnificent home and go after love, she doesn’t have a negative ambition towards it,” He said to see her raising her head at him in astonishment. This must have been the longest words he used when they were talking.

“One thing that I can’t do is for the love to grow in me suddenly. You know I didn’t plan for things to turn out this way when I wished for you to be a woman,” He reminded her like she didn’t know.

“I wanted it so badly because I thought of how to stop you from leaving us and that seems to be the only way. Seeing that you came to me by yourself with love in your heart for me as you claimed, I can’t let you leave without being happy,” Damien and she sighed.

“Initially you have come for me, but while focusing on that you’ve won my sister’s love. Annabel would do anything to ensure that you’re with her. I’m even scared that you’ve stolen her from me,” Damien accused and she could not help but smile.

“I feel indebted to you, but I can’t make a decision that would be in our best interest now, Vera. The truth is still hard for me to admit,” He said to see her face that was calm earlier start turning pale. She was feeling restless.

“Don’t be sad yet, I’m not done speaking,” Damien stated, going closer to her than he had done earlier and placing his hand on her shoulder. He cajoled her slowly not happy to see her wanting to shed a tear for him.

“I- I love you, Master Damien,” Vera murmured under her breath, she didn’t know where the conversation was heading, but it felt like Damien would ask her to stay away from him and can’t ever hold any importance in his life.

Vera feared him saying that to her, and that was why she left the difficulty aside and decided to confess her love for him again. Maybe Damien didn’t hear it when she told him in the morning, she doesn’t mind telling him again.

“I- I didn’t mean any harm by coming here. I was not intending to hurt you. I just came to satisfy my heart with the emotion it always craved for,” she was speaking out of a very pained voice, not happy with what she was doing, but she couldn’t get any other chance to correct it.

“Trust me, Damien, I was going to leave without telling you. I didn’t want to be on your hatred list, because you find out the truth, that was why I didn’t speak up earlier,” Vera talked and he listened with a straight and concerned gaze.

“But I promise that I’m not bad like your stepmom. I’m a good person, and everything I did was because I love you,” Vera assured, letting tears drop from her eyes and didn’t bother to wipe them off or neither hide the emotion from Damien.

“It’s fine-” Damien was saying, but she didn’t let him finish before speaking up again, “I promise that I won’t make you sad or regret changing your mind for me,” she sobbed and turned her head around to look at him with tears in her eyes.

If love can be sensed just by staring at people’s eyes Damien would have seen it. But even as it wasn’t imprinted on it, he could still realize it just by looking into them.

“Calm down… I’m not going to hurt you,” Damien assured then he tried calming her down by rubbing her back soothingly.

Vera could not nourish at the moment as she was too busy crying and scared of Damien’s intention for her.

“I’m not doubting you to be like my stepmom. I just need the space to think about everything before concluding,” he said to see her looking confusingly at him.

“Don’t cry,” he murmured, wiping the tears away from her face with his soft palm. Annabel would not have taken this sight lightly if she had been here and seen the butler crying. Damien didn’t know that he wasn’t gentle enough with her, and he ended up scaring her. Caleb had warned him not to do that.

“I’ve promised not to hurt you. But you see now, I’m so busy hunting after my stepmom that I don’t think I would be able to provide you any happiness. My heart still holds the revenge dearly,” Damien truthfully shared, sharing the truth of the situation, maybe she would understand him.

“Crystal is busy keeping a close watch on me, I’m sure of that. If she finds out that someone else aside from Annabel is important to me she could harm you to get back at me, and I would not want that for you,” Damien clarified.

“I’ll only be at peace if I am done with her chapter. We don’t even know who’s bound to win between Crystal and me, but I know her evil can’t win this time again,” he stated like he could predict the future.

“Before then, I can’t drag you into danger. Can you try to understand that?” Damien completed, his hand didn’t stop rubbing her back, even when it wasn’t necessary anymore. Vera sighed, she had listened to him but couldn’t come to conclusions of what he was still trying to say. Is he pleading with her to wait for him?

“Master Damien, what-”

“Stop the formality, I don’t want to hear it from you again,” Damien snapped, not hiding the ordering tone and his distaste towards that. “I’m listening,” he reacted.

“What should I do now? Are you asking me to go away?” Vera asked in a shaking voice, finding it kind of difficult to call him simply by his name.

“I need space for everything, Vera. The space to focus, think, and make everything right.” He said to see her eyes squinting down to her lap in disappointment.

“The space to get the evil doer punished, and I will need enough time to do that. I promise that I’ll come to you afterward by myself. Then we can finally share mutual feelings because presently it isn’t so,” Damien replied.

“I’m not refusing your love, but I can’t agree to it now as I am not sure of mine and I don’t want to put your life in danger, Vera.”
