” Serena.”
” Hi, nice to finally meet you.” I force a smile.
” You’re a pretty one. Dinner is this way.” Albert says and gestures to the dining room.
Todd rests his hand on my lower back and leads me to the table. We sit down opposite his parents. I look at Charlotte. With all the emotional trauma I’m sure she’s going through right now , she still had to smile.
” Oh my God, I’m so sorry that I’m late.” A girl waltzes in as she sits close to me.
She has a straight blonde hair which was bleached. Tanned skin and she looks like my age. She wears a pink crop top and a short black skirt. She’s kinda pretty, looks a lot like Charlotte.
” Really, Diana. You know every Friday is the family’s dinner, you don’t have to be late.” Charlotte says.
He had a sister, how come I’m not aware of this? I scan her features and she looks like someone who just had a nose job. She looks like Charlotte, just the plastic version.
” Mom, I’m sorry. I stopped by at Sam’s place.”
” That sick boyfriend of yours?” Albert says as he picks up his fork to eat.
” Samuel isn’t sick.” Diana retorts. I think she hasn’t noticed me yet or maybe she chose not to.
” How can you be so blind? Samuel is after you because of the family’s wealth and you know it.”
” I don’t give a f-ck.” Diana says.
Todd doesn’t look all that pleased. He drinks his water and flash me small smiles, probably to calm down my nerves. I don’t feel comfortable here. I feel out of place.
” Watch your tongue Diana.” Charlotte says.
Diana scoffs and pour an orange juice in her glass.
” I still don’t get it, when are you gonna stop being an ass.” Todd says and scoffs.
Diana turns to look at Todd. Her eyes settles on me first as she w¡dens her eyes. I get it , she just realized she was sitting close to a human all this while. She moves her gaze to Todd as she scowls.
” Shut the f-ck up Todd. For once you brought in a pretty woman. Who’s the ass, you d*ck?”
Oh I get it. Now I know why he didn’t mention he had a sister. They don’t like each other, it’s obvious.
” Guys, that’s enough.” Albert says slamming his hand on the table.
Everyone keeps quiet.
” Can we have dinner in peace now? And you Diana, you have to mind the way you talk to your older brother, you lack manners since you started following men around.” Albert says. Diana mutters something under her breath.
” What did you say?” Albert asks. His forehead crease as he glares at Diana.
” Nothing.” She mutters.
” Good.”
” Serena, I’m sorry about all this. It’s not always like this in our family weekend dinner.” Charlotte says.
I smile and nod in understanding.
” It’s fine, I understand.” I say and look down at my food.
I’m not even hungry. How am I supposed to politely decline the food.
” So when did you and Todd meet?” Charlotte asks.
” Three and a half months ago.” I reply.
” That’s sweet. You’re in college?” She continues.
” Yeah, I am. Sophomore year.” I answer.
” Wow, you look really young and beautiful. How old are you?” Charlotte asks. This looks like an interview.
” Twenty one.” I say and look down at my plate.
” That’s nice. You look young and beautiful though. Who are your parents? Sorry for the questions, Todd doesn’t really bring in women for our family dinner.”
” No, it’s fine, I understand.” I smile.
” Actually, she’s late Sebastian’s daughter.” Albert answers for me.
” What? Oh my God, I’m really sorry.” Charlotte apologise immediately.
” It’s okay, I get it , I understand.”
” We heard what happened. It must be a terrible sight to behold. I mean loosing everything you called family in one night hurts a lot. I’m really sorry about that dear.” She says and that triggers my heart.
I can’t cry. They can’t see me cry, not in front of them.
” Okay, seriously. She doesn’t need your sympathy right now. You don’t have to remind her that she doesn’t have a family, it’s not cool.” Diana speak up for me and I’m grateful. I don’t really need all this speech right now, it’s like adding more fuel into a burning furnace.
” Yeah, Diana is right.” Todd says beside.
” We’re sorry. I apologise. I was a little surprised that you’re Sebastian’s daughter. Any trace of who’s the killer?” Charlotte asks.
“No, not really. We’re still hoping.”
” What do you think they are after by the way? I mean why will someone wants to do such a thing?” Can they just quit talking about my family.
” Maybe something precious. Something priceless.” Albert says and i look up at him.
How did he know that?
Nobody knew my family had a heirloom. Did my father mention it to him before he died?
” You know I was actually brought to the station for questioning the other day.” Albert says.
” What?” Charlotte asks.
” Yeah. They thought I murdered her family. The detective called me in and indirectly called me a murderer.” Albert continues, still staring at me.
” Are you aware of this Serena?”
” Aware of what?” I ask Todd. What’s even going on here? How come no one cares about Charlotte’s bruise. For Pete’s sake, she’s got a black eye and a torn lip.
” You thought my father killed your parents? Serena, how could you think that? I mean we’re in a relationsh¡p, why would you think such.”
” I don’t know what you’re talking about. For crying out loud, your father was caught on our surveillance camera leaving our house. I didn’t say he killed them, the detectives were only doing their jobs.”
” Okay, rich girl, my father might be really aggressive and all that shit…” Diana says.
” What are you saying Diana?” Charlotte asks. Albert glares at his daughter.
” We can’t just sit and eat and ignore the fact that, dad gave you all these marks on your face. He’s started beating you up again. When is this ever gonna end?” Diana says. For once someone said what i wanted to hear.
Why haven’t they pressed charges against him. Who abuses their wife in this mordern world.
” Shut your mouth, Diana.” Albert orders.
” Yeah, so much for a perfect family? So much for trying to keep up with the good name of the Winston’s.”
” Diana…” Albert warns again. His anger so obvious.
” And you assh-le, what have you done to stop dad from hitting mom?” Diana asks and the next thing that happened scares the shit out of me.
Albert raised his hand and smack it across Diana’s face. Charlotte jolts in her seat. I’m startled as I stare at Diana. Her hand is on her cheek as she stares at her father. Todd isn’t saying a word.
Alrighty, I think I better get the hell out of here. I pick up my clutch and stand up.
” Um… I’m leaving.” I say and turn around to leave.
” Serena wait.” I hear Todd’s voice as he follows me.
” Go to your room now. I’ll make sure I discipline you tonight, you slutty daughter of mine.” I hear Albert says as I hasten my steps to the front door.
” Now!” Albert yells at Diana and I hear Diana scre-m.
I rush out of the house and breathe freedom, but a hand grab my forearm. I turn around and I’m face with Todd’s angry face. Oh he has a right to get angry now? I’m the one who’s supposed to be angry. His father just slapped a grown up woman like she was ten, and in front of me. I mean who still abuses their wife and kids. This is insane. This family is insane.
” What the f-ck is wrong with you? You can’t just leave like that. In front of my parents.”
” Oh really?”
” Yes, Serena. You don’t have a right to do that. That was my parents and what you did was disrespectful.”
” You’re f-cking serious right now. Your father just slapped an adult in front of me, wasn’t that disrespectful?” I ask as my nose flare in anger. I can literally feel my ears bring out smoke.
” Disrespectful? Are you saying my parents disrespected you. You’re so spoilt that you don’t even notice it whenever you sound rude.” He yells at me.
” What’s wrong with you? You’re an adult , Todd. Your father beats up your mom and you can’t even do anything, and now you’re trying to act angry like I’m the cause behind your family’s problems.”
” Don’t you dare talk to me like that.”
” Or what Todd? What you’re gonna do? I’m sick and tired of your egoistic attitude. You don’t listen , you don’t even listen to anyone. I’m sick and tired of you telling me what to do. I’m sick and tired of your sick attitude.” I yell at him.
” And I’m sick and tired of your slutty attitude. First you walked out on me at that restaurant and left with Judah, I didn’t say shit. And then you wore his shirt, you think I didn’t noticed you smell different? I’ve been ignoring all your bullshit attitude and here you’re standing in front of me like you’re any different. You’re a f-cking slut, Serena.”
” Watch your tongue, Todd.”
” Or what? You bitch.”
I bite back the tears.” You’re just like him. Your sick psychotic father. You’re an assh-le and a sick f-ck. There’s no f-cking difference between you and that man in there, you’re…” I’m surprised and interrupted at the same time as Todd slapped me.
I’m in shock. With my hand still on my cheek, i glare at Todd. The eyes I’ve always adored three months ago is red as hell. He looks like a monster as he glares back at me. I remove my hands from my cheek and wipe the tear that slip out of my eyes. He won’t see me cry and then call me weak.
” We’re done. It’s over Todd. Don’t ever come close to me or ever call me. Judah might be an assh-le but I’ll gladly f-ck him, with your f-cking microp*n*s, you impotent bastard. You’re an idiot and a coward.”
His jaw clenches as he raises his hand again.
” Try it, I dare you. The fact that I don’t have a family doesn’t mean you’ll take advantage of me. Hit me again and I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your miserable life in jail , you stupid piece of shit.” I yell.
I watch as his face softens.
” I’m sorry, Serena.” He plea. His eyes are different like he was manipulated.
” F-ck your sorry. F-ck all of you. Don’t ever come near me again. It is over Todd, we’re done.”
” Serena, I’m sorry, you made me do this.”
I ignore him and turn to walk away.
” That’s enough Todd, let her be.” I hear Albert says.
” Serena, I’m sorry.” Todd calls after me.
” Don’t you dare cross that gate, Todd, or you’ll cease to be my son.” Albert says.
I shake my head and hasten my steps. Sick father. Who knows what he’s doing to Todd. I walk out of the gate and I’m faced with the dark night and an empty street. I don’t even know his family’s street or it’s location.
Shit, where am I gonna go from here?
