Cassandra’s pov πŸŽ‹πŸŽ„

Brad flashed a tight smile as he paid the waiter for our meal, his eyes moved around the empty plates on the table,, he dared not complain.

“Thank you, sir, please patronize us next time” the waiter said.

Brad glared at him in return, he must be cursing the innocent waiter in his heart right now.

“Sweetheart? Why are you frowning? Is it because you don’t like the food they serve here?” I asked him, anyone who’s watching us would know I’m teasing him.

He cleared his throat, broke into an overly sweet smile.

“The food’s great” he replied.

“Yeah, I thought so too” I piped in.

I waved the waiter off, he quickly gathered the plates and rushed off somewhere, it should be their kitchen.

“Are you satisfied?” Brad asked me through tight l-ips.

Judging from his grimaced face, he should be cursing both me and the waiter in his mind,,in fact, he must be thinking of ways to murder me right now,,,but I don’t care.

He landed himself in this mess and he should pay the price, I didn’t ask him to lie about me being his girlfriend.

“Are you satisfied? Or do you want more?” he asked in a daring tone.

I barked out a laugh, but shut up immediately he glared at me.

“Let’s go” I said.

He eyed me, snatched my bag from the table and headed towards the exit door, I got up and quickly rushed after him.

“You’ve spent so much time with me, aren’t you gonna get scolded by your superiors?” I asked.

“Superiors?”

I nodded.

“He’s not gonna scold me, I took permission from him earlier before you came”

“Oh”

“Yeah, by the way, I don’t have much work to do,,,, I’ve sorted out all the tasks I was given” he explained.

We arrived at the road separating JJ construction and this restaurant, Brad looked at both sides of the road as though he wanna cross.

“Do you want me to go back to work with you?” I asked him.

“Nope, I’m trying to get you a cab” he replied.

As if God heard his words, a cab stopped in front of us. He leaned over and talked with the driver, after a few moments, he faced me again.

“You’re going to Vero’s cafe, right?”

“Yeah”

“Good, I’ve already paid him and given him direction, he’s gonna drop you there”

“Awwn! That’s so sweet,,, thanks sweetheart” I smiled, overly sweetly and pat his shoulder.

He shuddered and shoved my bag in my hand, the grabbed the backseat door and pulled it open.

“Don’t call me that, it sends shivers down my spine,,, and trust me, those aren’t good shivers” he said.

I laughed at his words, then slide into the car and blew him a k-ss, which he caught and stamped it on his chest.

“This, I can take!” He said.

I shook my head. “You’re one funny character” I told him.

He sent me a wink, waved at me and mouthed.

“I love you, sweetheart”

“I love you too, honey” I replied.

He turned to the driver and signaled him to carry on, he waved at me once more and the driver drove off.

Grassi estate!

Jayden stayed focused on his laptop, as Kelvin drove through the big gates of the community, he’s got a lot of mails pilling up and lots of doc-ments that needed his urgent signatures.

Kelvin drove past so many houses, but slowed down when he reached a particular gate.

He horned and the gates opened, he drove into the compound, drove straight to the garage and parked the car.

“Mr Grassi, we’re here” he said.

Jayden nodded wordlessly, he shut down his laptop and kept it aside. He looked out the window and sighed, he adjusted his tie.

He grabbed the flowers laying on the seat next to him, he grabbed the door handle and pushed it open, then alighted the car.

He studied the car’s tyres for a moment, as if he’s checking for something, after a brief moment, he faced Kelvin.

“We’ve got a flat tire, go get it fixed” he told Kelvin.

“Yes, sir” Kelvin replied.

Without another word, Jayden turned and headed straight for the main building.

Some of the workers, like gardeners, security men and cleaners, whom he walked past, stopped whatever they were doing and greeted him.

“Good afternoon, sir” they chorused.

He simply gave them a curt nod in response, but none of them grumbled or took an offense, they all knew he’s a man of few words.

He took long str-de towards the door, he reached for the doorbell and waited for someone to come get it.

Not up to a minute, the door snapped opened and a woman of about 50years appeared, she broke into a smile when she saw Jayden.

“Aunt, good,,,,,”

“Wonderful, my little bundle of joy is here!” she exclaimed, cutting him off.

She opened her arms, waiting for Jayden to give her a hug. Jayden lowered himself slightly and pulled his aunt into a hug, but she hugged him real tight and Jayden chuckled.

“Aunt, I’m gonna have a stiff neck if you keep hugging me like this” he said, teasing her for being short.

His aunt pulled away from the hug and slapped his shoulder lightly, he laughed.

“I can still beat you up even though I’m short” she said.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m your child after all” Jayden agreed.

His aunt’s eyes moved to the flowers in his hands, she smiled.

“How considerate of you, you even bought Merry a gift” she said.

She tilted her head and stared at a girl in,side, Jayden also took a peek and shook his head.

“Aunt, I don’t even know who Merry is,,, ”

His aunt eyed him, he cut himself off and cleared his throat.

“Anyway, these flowers aren’t for her, they’re yours” he said.

“Mine? But,,,”

“Just take it, aunt” he said.

He shoved the flowers in her hands, he knew she’s not gonna accept it without being forced.

His Aunt stared at the flowers, she perceived it and inhaled its fragrance, then sighed deeply.

“Such a beauty flower is gonna be wasted on an old woman like me” she sighed again. “Do come in” she said.

His aunt rushed in and Jayden followed quietly, though not before shutting the door which his aunt left open.

“Aunt” a female voice called his aunt when they arrived at the living room.

“Oh, Merry” his aunt responded.

She signaled Merry to come closer, then threw an arm around her shoulders,,, the faced Jayden.

“Jay, this is Merry”

“Merry?”

“Yes, I mentioned her on the phone earlier, have you forgotten?”

Jayden studied Merry, she’s avoiding his eyes and smiling shyly, she’s playing with her fingers nervously.

But somehow, Jayden managed to discover she’s not a delicate girl, she’s just pretending to be one.

*pretentious!* he scoffed mentally.

“Jay?” His aunt called.

He raised his head and averted his gaze to her, she smiled.

“I mentioned her earlier on the phone, have you forgotten?”

“Yes, I forgot” he replied.

“Oh, well this is Merry, she’s my best friend’s daughter, I invited her over to have lunch with us”

“Oh”

Jayden walked towards a sofa, he took off his jacket and threw it carelessly on another sofa.

He sat down and threw his head back, loosening his necktie. His aunt frowned, she walked closer to him and smacked the back of his head.

“Ouch, aunt, that hurt” he cried quietly.

“I kept telling you to stop this your bad habit of throwing your clothes everywhere, when are you gonna change?” she asked.

“But I didn’t threw it everywhere, I threw it on the sofa” he defended himself.

His aunt scoffed, grabbed the jacket and threw it on his face.

“The sofa isn’t the right place to put it, there’s a coat stand right there” she pointed at a coat stand near the door.

“Coat stand?”

“Yes, now go put it there!”

“Oh” he got up and walked towards it.

His aunt facepalm herself, she placed her hands on her wa-ist and grunted.

“I don’t know how I survived these years with your stubbornness!” she said.

Jayden simply chuckled from where he was, his aunt eyed him briefly.

“Merry and I will continue preparing lunch” she said and went to the kitchen with Merry.

Jayden walked back to the sofa, he slumped down and reached for the TV remote control,,, he turned the TV on and settled for a random show.

β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’

Dinning table!

Sounds of spoons hitting plates were heard as everyone’s focused on their food, except Merry.

Her eyes were wholly fixed on Jayden, she’s watching his every move with a smile on her face,,,,she was admiring his handsome face.

Jayden’s aunt noticed this and cleared her throat, which caught Jayden’s attention and he raised his head.

Merry quickly torn her eyes from Jayden, though she wasn’t tired of staring at his face yet.

“Jay, how’s the food?” His aunt asked.

“Delicious” he replied.

Merry’s smile wΒ‘dened at his words, she reached for a slice of bread.

“That’s great, Merry made them” his aunt said.

Jayden’s hand stopped midway, he was about shoving another spoon of rice in his mouth. He stylishly dropped the spoon, and reached for a napkin and wiped his mouth.

“Right, Jay, what do you think of Merry? Isn’t she a beautiful girl?” His aunt asked.

Jayden faced Merry, she seemed like a normal girl to him, honestly, she’s not in anywhere near his ex-wife in terms of beauty.

Rather than saying something that would offend his aunt, or break Merry’s self-esteem, he opted to stay silent.

“You know, her father is the founder of Reynolds groups and they own series of hotels too”

“Oh”

“Merry is a very smart girl, do you know that she studied at Cambridge?”

“Cambridge, that’s excellent!” Jayden exclaimed in fake enthusiasm.

“Yes, she’s smart, beautiful and a good cook,,,, she’s fit to manage a home properly”

Jayden’s brows furrowed instantly, he took a second look at Merry and shook his head, with a smirk at the corner of his l-ips.

“I hope you can consider her and,,,,”

He coughed loudly as if he’s choking, his aunt quickly poured him a glass of water which he gulped down.

But the truth was, he simply wanted to cut his aunt off and that’s the only polite way he knew to do it.

“So,,,, aunt, what’s the main reason for this lunch?” He asked.

“I just wanna introduce you to each other, you know, it’s good to make new friends everyday,,,, what do you think, Merry?”

Merry nodded quickly. “Yes, yes, aunt is right” she smiled.

Jayden did a mental eye roll *too desperate!* he complained mentally.

“Jay, I planted some orchids in my garden, how about you and Merry take a stroll around,,, you know, just share your views about it”

Jayden frowned, he gave his aunt a look, then averted his gaze to Merry,,,she flashed him a sweet smile.

“Share views about flowers?” she nodded. “I know nothing about flowers, I think I’ll pass” he said.

His aunt banged the table softly, glared at him pointed.

“Did mean you should actually talk about flowers, you should get to know yourself better” she said.

“Oh” he shrunk on his chair.

His aunt faced Merry, she smiled at her and reached for Merry’s hand on the table,,, she squeezed it gently.

“My Jayden is not much of a talker, don’t take it to heart if he doesn’t talk much to you” she said.

Merry shook her head. “It’s fine aunt, I can cope” Merry said.

Jayden’s aunt nodded, she turned to Jayden and gave her another pointed look.

“Quick, take her to the garden!” His aunt said in a commanding tone.

He wanted to protest, he wanted to let his aunt know he doesn’t like Merry and don’t wanna get to know her,,,,but his aunt’s eyes shut him.

“Merry is a lovely girl and you would enjoy your time with her” she said.

Merry smiled as if to prove his aunt’s words, Jayden rolled his eyes. He took a deep breath and for up.

“Let’s go” he said.

He shoved his hands in his pocket and stormed out, without waiting for Merry or even glanced back to make sure she’s following him.

β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’

“,,,,,,I couldn’t believe my dad would actually say that, I was like, dad stop saying that you’re embarrassing me!” Merry said and burst into laughter.

Merry looked at Jayden’s face for the umpteenth time, to see if he found her words funny, but as usual, Jayden’s face remained blank.

She’s been talking non-stop, which Jayden was already finding annoying, but didn’t try to stop her,,,, it’s her choice to talk after all.

“You know, when I was studying at Cambridge, there was this guy in my class that kept hitting on me,,, he’s from a poor family and was attending our school on scholarshΒ‘p,, his name’s Stephen Colbert,,,,, ”

Jayden glanced at her for the first time since they came to the garden, he arched his brows at the mentioned of Stephen’s name.

“Stephen Colbert is from a poor family?” he asked her.

“Yeah” she replied with a smile, happy that Jayden was actually following her gist.

“Oh, how come I don’t know?” he asked rhetorically, in a mocking manner.

“You know him?” Merry asked.

Jayden cleared his throat, he bite his inner cheek and shook his head. He saw a bench a few steps away, he took long str-de towards it and sat down.

Merry also sat next to him, dropped her small bag on the empty space next to her and continued talking.

“So,,, Stephen was always hitting on me, I warned him to stay away from me but he didn’t listen, so I gave him a public disgrace and,,,,,”

“Oh, a public disgrace”

“Yeah, can you imagine how annoying he was? He was always dirty and sweating all over, I can’t even swallow my own spit thinking about him,,, I mean, what made him think I’ll date someone like him, he was pig!”

Jayden reached for his phone, he checked the time and puffed out some air,,, he’s looking for a reasonable excuse to escape from here.

“Wait, I haven’t ask you, what’s your ideal wife?”

“Ideal wife?”

Merry nodded quickly, a perfect smile on her face.

“What kind of women are you into?” she asked again.

“Em,,,, I prefer not so crazy ladies”

“Really? Who?”

Jayden grinned. “Definitely not like you” he replied.

“Me? What’s wrong with me? I’m perfect, we’re perfect for each other”

Jayden gave her a *what the heck?* look, he slowly moved away from her, creating more space between them,,,, he’s suddenly feeling suffocated by her words.

“You don’t talk much, but I do,, that’s a perfect match, we complete each other” she said.

He closed his eyes and inhale deeply, just when Merry was about saying something else, Jayden’s phone started ringing.

As if he’s being expecting the call, he quickly answered it without even bothering to check who called him.

“Hello?” He answered.

“Yo! Man, where are,,,,,”

He smiled at the familiar voice that invaded his ear, this is exactly what he wanted.

“,,,, I’m waiting for you in your office. Wait, is he even listening to me? Or he’s dead already?!” Stephen said jokingly, from the other side.

Jayden glanced at Merry, she’s eagerly waiting for him to finish his call so they can continue their conversation,,, or her speech rather.

He cleared his throat and sprang up, he put his free hand on his wa-ist.

“The meeting has started already?” he asked seriously, then peek at Merry.

“Meeting? I didn’t say anything about meeting” Stephen said.

But Jayden didn’t have that, he continued with his act.

“I’ll be there soon, give me ten minutes!” he said.

“Jay, what’s wro,,,,, ” Jayden hanged up before Stephen would complete his words.

He faced Merry, he gave her an apologetic smile.

“I’m sorry, duty calls!” He said.

“But we,,,,,”

“Tell my aunt some very urgent came up” with that he rushed off.

Merry’s mouth hung opened as she simply stared wordlessly, at the direction he had just rushed off,,, she’s feeling quite embarrassed.

“What the heck? Is he normal?” she asked herself.
