Chapter 5

*
Right in the council chamber at the state governor’s official residence:
Twenty honorable men were seen as they chaired a long conference table, ten on this side and ten on the other side.
Among the twenty men, 17 out of them were in similar attires:
Pure black modernized suits, male black hats, and shiny black eyeglasses which gave them a bold and gentle look.

The remaining three were also in similar attires, but their suits were brown. Also their hats and shoes too.

“Greetings your excellency.” they all greeted and stood up to welcome the chief Host.

He maniacally stepped into the auditorium and gently settled down in a seat that was specially prepared for him.

“Good evening!
with great delight, I welcome you all that came to this important program. Please have your seats.”

They all gently settled as commanded by the host, which was no other person but governor Christian Chukwu.

His appearance was royally adorned, he was in this popular dress with Lion heads design, mostly referred to as “ebube agu” in the eastern part of Nigeria.
He also had a red cap that matched the color of the red lion heads that were printed on his cloth.
His eyeballs were also covered with black sunglasses which he could have possibly used to avert the case nervousness.

He went through some files on the big high table and looked up to fully address them.

“Once again, To you all: the 17 wise councilors and the three honorable senators of this great state; you’re highly welcome.
I want you all to know that without you, this state wouldn’t be working competently, without you, there’s no way forward, thank you very much for honoring this humble call”. Chris recited boldly.

“We’re honored, your Excellency”, they all replied in accordance.

“So, gentlemen, I called this meeting regarding the current development in this state, we all know the seriousness of the financial and security crisis we’re currently facing in this state.
It’s getting worse each day,
I want every one of us to bring our minds together and discuss this matter in a way that we’d come up with a permanent and one-time solution to this
problem.”

When he was done speaking, he gently sat down and applauses sounded in his respect,
A light-skinned and average-in-height young Man identified to be one of the councilors through his outfit stood up and sought permission to speak.

“Your Excellency, this week alone in my region: three men were kidnapped on their way to their workplaces, a bank was robbed and about 100 million Naira looted away, and just this yesterday, a Young Man was shot while coming back from work.
The insecurity is worsening every day, it’s getting out of hand, whatever we can do to tackle and terminate this crisis, I’m ready and up for it.”

“Huuuurh,” Chris grumbled tiredly as he uncontrollably landed on a soft couch at his resting chamber. He removed the red cap to cool off his head.

“Hmmm”. he heaved sadly,
“The word “Rulersh¡p” is only enjoyable in the eyes of the beholder and not to the rulers themselves;
It’s so unfortunate that many people including me were thinking that anyone with rank in society got absolutely nothing to worry about, but now I’m beginning to realize and concur with the saying that” The bigger the man, the bigger the trouble.
A poor man always deals with poor problems while a rich man deals with rich problems….”

Chris was still busy in thought when his phone beeped, gazing at the screen; he discovered a missed call from Jackson.
“This guy will never change.’ he muttered with a sigh.
Since Chris became governor, Jackson had never called him with his airtime for once, he would just beep him and wait for him to call back.

“I will never use my hærd-earned money to call a governor.” that was his response one day when Chris challenged him for the abnormal behavior.

Chris would have quickly called him back on a normal day but that particular day was a different one, the meeting he had with the senators and councilors was such a long one that made him feel so tired and exhausted, but being tired was not even the main reason why he refused to call him back, he was still nurturing the last phone conversation they had earlier that day.

He wanted to keep the phone but a WhatsApp text from Jackson popped into the notification window,
Without opening the message, he read from the pop-up.
It reads:

“Hey, buddy! I never knew it has gotten to the point of snubbing my calls, well I just wanna give you a little hint on the next step to take in order to get back your rightful diamonds.
Just meet your lawyer and thank me later 😉.

After reading the message, a warm smile appeared on Chris’ face,
“How come I never thought about something like this before, hmmm, I must confess: Jackson is now a pro, all I just have to do is take the case to the court and those little cuties will be on their way back to papa”.

“Huh, what kind of person is that, if he really cared about the kids, he should have shown up those days the poor girl was still going through hell”. Frank said after hearing the whole narration from Steve.
Frank, Steve’s friend came to his house upon his request to come.
Steve actually invited him to inform him about Chris’ visit and also get his opinion on the right action to take concerning his threat.

“Wait, you mean he opened his mouth to say: it’s either you succumb in peace or pieces?” Frank asked and sat up peering straight into Steve’s eyes.

“Yes, he said that to me”, Steve replied expressionlessly.

“Whoever makes such a statement is guilty and punishable, you can use that against him.

“Really?”Steve implored curiously,

“Yes, you can even sue him for life threats or false accusations”.

“Is that so?”, Steve asked interestedly,

“Exactly”.

They were still in their discussion when the doorbell rang drawing their attention to the door,

“Let me get that”, Steve announced and walked straight to the door.

As he opened it, his gaze met a shiny dark-complexioned young man, his dark nature was such that even his eyeballs and l¡ps were darkened.

“Good afternoon OGA” he greeted and held an expression that it takes only scientific results to know whether he was crying or smiling.

“What’s the problem, Musa?”Steve asked as he rested his left arm on the doorpost.

“As I Sidon for my security post dey listen to the news for my radio, I Kon hear as pesin dey knock for gate, when I put my eye for that small hole as you tell me say make I dey do, nahim I kon see say na one white yellow pawpaw girl, I ask am wetin she dey find and she kon give me this envelope say make I give my OGA”.

“Hmmm, Musa, so all this up and down sermon is just to simply tell me that a fair lady gave you the envelope to give me right?”Chris asked tiredly.

“Yes, OGA”.the man replied.

“Alright, you can go”. Steve said and slammed the door behind ignoring the “thank you OGA” he was saying.

As Steve entered the room, Frank gazed up
“Who was that?”, he asked.

“My gateman and his talkative lifestyle”, Steve replied as he slumped on a mini couch and tore the envelope open. He gazed at the legal document for a full minute.

“What is it?” Frank asked.

“Chris is suing me for 50 million Naira for detaining his biological kids”.

“What! Are you kidding me?

To be continued.
