đš EPISODE TWENTY-TWOđš
When Adrienne arrived at Yuanâs apartment, her friends
knew instantly that something was wrong.
âWhat?â Yuan asked. âDid he break your heart? Was
he cheating on you? Where is he? I will kill him!â
Adrienne sat on the couch silently. She stared into
space, still unable to recover from her shock. How could this
happen to her? A few hours ago, she was happy. She was
floating on air.
But that seemed so far away as she sat with her heart
broken like shattered glass. She didnât know how she would
be able to recover from it. Her world had fallen apart.
âAdrienne, what is wrong?â Jill asked, taking her hands
in hers and gently squeezing them.
She stared at them for a long time.
âPlease donât tell me you caught him cheating on
you?â
Adrienne shook her head. âHe wasnât cheating on
me.â
âThen why are you like this?â
She took a deep breath. âApparently⌠Justin was sort
of⌠cheating with me.â
âWhat?â
âIâŚâ She took a deep breath. âI shared the elevator
with his parents. They didnât know me. They havenât met
me. But his Mom was so upset, she couldnât help talking
about herâŚdilemma with her son.â Pain came rushing to her
again. âShe saidâŚthat Justin has this obligation to the
family. An arrangement that goes way back when he was
still very young.â
âWhat is it?â
âThey⌠arranged for him⌠to be married to someâŚ
rich heiress,â she stammered and then tears rolled down her
cheeks.
âOh my God!â Yuan and Jill breathed together.
It took a moment for her friends to recover.
âMaybeâŚmaybe itâs not his parents. How could you
know? You havenât met them.â
âI saw a picture of them,â Adrienne replied. âAnd his
father looks exactly like him. Thereâs no mistake about it.
They mentioned his name. So Iâm pretty sure itâs them.â
âHave you spoken to him?â
Adrienne shook her head. âNot yet. I justâŚwant to
org-nize my thoughts first.â
âHe never mentioned this to you?â
âNever. But there were moments in the past when he
would look worried or sad when he remembered something.
He mentioned a family obligation that he forgot about. He
didnât say what it was. He was always changing the topic
after that. Iâm pretty sure this was it.â
âBut maybeâŚmaybe he doesnât want to do it.â
Adrienne remembered Justin say, âItâs too late. I donât
want to do it anymore.â
âOkay, you said they agreed on this a long time ago.
Maybe because you came alongâŚJustin wouldnât want to go
through with this anymore. His parents wanted him to do it.
But did you hear him say that he would?â
Adrienne shook her head. âBut his parents will
disinherit him if he defies them. And I know how much
Justinâs family means to him, guys.â
âBut you mean something to him too.â
Adrienne took a deep breath. âHe hasnât told me he
loved me. But I know he loves his family more than
anything.â
âJust because he hasnât told you doesnât mean he
doesnât,â Jill said. âBecause we see him. And we know he is
deeply in love with you.â
âBut why didnât he tell me about this?â
Yuan sighed. âI donât know. Maybe heâs trying to fix it.
So when he does tell you, there would be nothing for you to
worry about anymore.â
Adrienne wiped the tears from her face. Her friends
were right. Justin probably did want to fix it. Thatâs why he
went back to Chicago with his parents. He said he would
prepare his family first and then he would ask her to come
to Chicago with him. He wouldnât say that if he still planned
on pushing his engagement to some other girl, right?
âOh God! I hope he can convince his parents,â she
breathed. âBecause I donât want to let him choose, you
know. I wonât let him sacrifice his relationshÂĄp with his
parents for me. I know what itâs like to live with a mother
that hates you and a father who couldnât stand up for you. I
wonât let Justin have that life, guys. I love him too much for
that.â
âSweetie⌠weâre sure you guys will be okay,â Jill said.
âBelieve in Justin. He wonât hurt you. He will fight for you.â
âI really hope youâre right. IâŚI donât wanna lose him.
Itâs too soon.â Adrienne let out frustrated sigh. âGod, canât I
have likeâŚa monthâs peace?â she asked, looking up. âI
mean⌠Justin and I have been together officially for like a
week. And now this.â
âIf he really loves you, he will fight for you. Maybe he
went to see his parents this weekend to call off his
engagement with this bitch.â
âNo wonder Justin was non-committal before. Maybe
this was the reason why he never did relationshÂĄps. He
couldnât commit becauseâŚhe was already committed to
somebody else. And the other girls were all like flings. To
pass the time. To have some fun before he finally serves life
imprisonment with some bitch who earned the right to be
his fiancĂŠe just by being born.â Adrienne said, thinking out
loud.
âBut you werenât just some pastime, Adrienne. He got
serious with you.â
âMaybe he never meant to, but he couldnât help it,â Jill
suggested.
Adrienne sighed. âI canât hold him back from his destiny. I
canât make him leave his family. He was a twin, you know?
His brother died at birth. Heâs the only one his parents got.â
Jill and Yuan smiled at her apologetically.
âJust wait. Iâm sure heâll fix this.â Yuan said.
âGod, I hope he does. And soon! Because I need some
strength to face my parents.â
âWhy? What happened?â
âMy parents called me. Apparently, news of Troyâs
black eye reached them already. My Mom is pissed with me.
Kim failed to mention to them that I found her on top of
Troy, mo-ning her lungs out!â
âOf course. Whoever makes it to your parents first
gets to throw the first stone.â Jill rolled her eyes. âOoohh! I
want to poke her eyes out!â
âIt doesnât matter whether they cheated on me. I
cheated on Troy, too. And I was going to break up with Troy
even before I found out. This was doomed to happen. My
best bet is for my parents to understand that for once, Iâm
doing something I want. Being with the person I love. And
not just to please them.â
âAny parent should understand that!â Yuan gro-ned.
âNot my Mom. Apparently, she was doing me a favor
for pushing me to date Troy. She said, Iâd never do good in
life. My best chance was to marry somebody successful.
How pathetic did she think I was?â
âI wanna bitch-slap your Mom sometimes!â Yuan said.
âIâm sorry. But I really donât get how mean she is to you!
Like you didnât come from her! How could she demean you
like this?â
âAnd thereâs nothing to demean! Sheâs got a smart,
beautiful daughter whose only wish is to please her! What more could she ask for?â Jill said.
âWell, now at least you can tell her that her choice
wasnât good enough for you,â Yuan added. âYou managed to
snag one of the richest bachelors in the country. Eat that
Kimberly!â
âIt doesnât matter. Justin didnât have to be rich. Iâd still
fall in love with him. Remember, when I did fall for him, we
were just having dates in our apartments. We barely went
out. I never got first-hand experience of knowing how rich
he really was. We kept things low-key⌠quiet and simple.
And I still fell in love with him.â
âBut still, it must have been quite a shock for
Kimberly!â Yuan ass**ted. âI wonder how she reacted when
she first realized who youâre dating now. And how Troy felt
when he found out who he lost you to.â
âYeah! Justin freaking Adams!â Jill said cheerily.
âMust have been quite a shock for them,â Yuan
continued. âUnfortunately, they werenât shocked enough to
have a heart attack. That would have been lovely!â
âSeriously, guys! I should be the one wishing them
dead, not you. Whatever happens between Kim and me,
sheâs still my sister. Sheâs still family.â
âTell that to her. She doesnât seem to know!â Yuan
rolled his eyes.
âSo you still need to go to Boston?â
Adrienne nodded. âYes. And I was hoping Justin would
come with me.â
âHe would,â Yuan said confidently. âHeâs a decent guy.
He wonât leave you in the air.â
âAnd not for some bitch whoâs only connection with
him is a business tie-up,â Jill added.
Adrienne buried her face in her hands and prevented
herself from crying. âOh, God, I hope you guys are right.â
That night, Adrienne decided to spend the night in
Justinâs apartment, instead of hers. Justin had given her keys
to his apartment they moment they got back from the resort. It was the first time she used her key without him
actually being in the place.
She wanted to feel close to him. She laid down on his
bed, the bed they usually spend their nights in. She hugged
his pillows. They still smelled faintly of his aftershave.
She flipped her phone and dialed his number.
âHoney,â he greeted her after one ring.
His voice sounded so sweet to her and she
immediately felt like crying. She realized just how much she
loved him and wanted to keep him forever.
She took a deep breath. âI miss you,â she whispered.
She tried to keep her voice steady. She didnât want to let
him know that something was up. She didnât want to tell
him yet that she knew about his engagement. Especially not
over the phone.
It took him a moment to respond. âI hate being away
from you,â he responded. âIf I didnât have⌠some things to
fix here, I wouldnât have gone at all.â
âYes. I wish you were here, too.â
âWhere are you?â
She sighed. âIn your bed.â
He paused for a long while. Then he said, âIf thatâs
your way of making me suffer even more, youâre
succeeding.â
She giggled. âIâve missed you. I thought if I spend the
night in your bed, Iâd still somehow feel like youâre just here
next to me.â
âIâd come back right now, if I could.â
âItâs okay. Weâll see each other on Monday.â
âUntil then, it will be torturous.â
They both fell quiet for a couple of seconds⌠just
feeling each otherâs presence, no matter how far they were
from each other.
Then finally, Adrienne said, âGood night, Justin.â
âGood night, honey,â Justin said soberly. âIâll be
making love to you⌠in my dreams.â
When Adrienne hung up the phone, she hugged his
pillow and let all the tears fall.

đšEPISODE TWENTY-THREEđš
It seemed like an eternity before Adrienne faced Justin
again. During the two days that they spent apart, she tried
to act normally. Heâd call her at least three times a day. She
didnât want him to think that something was up. Because
knowing him, he just might fly back to New York earlier than
scheduled and he only got two days to spend with his
family.
Monday evening, he appeared on her doorstep.
âHi,â she greeted him, pasting a smile on her face.
He stared at her for a while. And without a word, he
pulled her to him and crushed his l-ips to hers.
âJustin,â she whispered against his l-ips.
âI missed you,â he said, lifting her off her feet and
carrying her to the bedroom.
When he put her down on her feet, she stared up at
him. She could see fatigue in his eyes. âI missed you, too.â
He smiled at her, but she knew him better now. His
eyes didnât sparkle and it looked like he was forcing the
smile on his face. Adrienne already knew that something
was up.
âAre you okay?â she asked.
He nodded. âI am now.â
âJustinâŚâ she started.
He silenced her with a k-ss. She k-ssed him back. Their
k-ss became passionate. It was evident that he didnât want
to talk. He just wanted to lose himself in her. And she
allowed him.
Within minutes, they were in bed, p-nting. They rode
the tide of passion that threatened to consume both of
them.
âAdrienneâŚâ Justin whispered. He was more urgent
than usual. She matched his k-sses, his passion with equal
fervor. She loved this man and she didnât want to lose him.
She wanted to claim him, as much as he was claiming her.
When she reached her peak, she scre-med his name
in ecstasy. In the midst of their passion, she managed to
remember that they got lost too soon, Justin wasnât even
wearing protection.
âHoneyâŚwe donât have protection,â she p-nted.
He stared back at her in eyes drunk with passion,
consumed by desire. His expression was so intense, she
almost didnât recognize him.
He took her mouth in his in a rough, passionate k-ss.
She k-ssed him back, holding him close to her.
Then he leaned his forehead against hers and he
whispered in a hoarse voice, âTell me you love me,
Adrienne.â
She blinked back at him, finally gaining back some of
her senses. âWhat?â
She stared back at him, unable to understand what he
was asking of her.
âTell me⌠that youâre in love with me,â he said, his
voice pleading. He drew in a deep breath. Then he added,
âThe same way that I am so, so⌠in love with you.â
Her heart pounded in,side her chest and she struggled
to find her voice. Emotions enveloped her all at once and
she fought for air. She smiled at him, tears glistening in her
eyes. âJustinâŚyou know I am.â
A slow, triumphant smile spread across his face. âI
wanna hear you say it, honey.â
She pulled him to her and k-ssed him passionately.
When she came up for air, she said, âI love you, Justin
Adams. With all my heart.â
He k-ssed her back. âI love you, Adrienne Miller. With
all my heart. With all my soul. With all that I am,â he said.
And with that, she felt him move within her, more passionately and more urgently that it brought her once
again to her peak.
âJustin!â she scre-med.
âAdrienne, I love you so much!â he scre-med her
name and within seconds she felt his body rock within her.
He tightened his arms around her as he buried his
face into the mass of her hair, taking in her scent, feeling
her every heartbeat, listening to her every breath. They
remained joined, still one with each other. And all Adrienne
could think of was how he told her he loved her.
Justin continued k-ssing her, nuzzling her neck. Her
eyes were half-closed. She was consumed by the power of
their lovemaking. It was intense. And she knew that she had
just given herself completely to him. Her heart and her soul
now both belonged to Justin.
âYouâre beautiful,â he whispered to her.
She smiled. âSo are you.â Then, she again
remembered that they werenât wearing protection. âJustinâŚ
you werenât wearing any rubber.â
He stared back at her. She expected him to panic, and
realize what just happened. They were both lost in their
passion that they actually forgot about the risks. But he
said, âI know.â He leaned down and k-ssed her once again.
âJustin, Iâm not on the pill.â She remembered that she
should have thought about this since the day she lost her
V-rginity.
âI know,â he said again.
âJustinâŚâ
He silenced her with a k-ss.
âDo you think I would worry, Adrienne?â he asked. âI
love you, honey.â
She bit her lip and k-ssed him back. âI love you, too.â
He smiled back at her. âThen we have nothing to
worry about.â
Finally, he pulled out of her and rolled on his back. He
gathered her in her arms. She rested her head on his shoulder.
They got lost in their thoughts for a while. Justin
silently car-ssed her arms and k-ssed the top of her head
once in a while.
She wondered what happened in Chicago. Did he
manage to convince his parents not to go through with their
arrangement to marry him off? Did he win? Is he finally free?
She took a deep breath. âJustin⌠is everything all
right with you and your parents?â
It took a moment for him to answer. âNothing I canât
handle.â
She stared up at him, searching his face. Again, his
eyes werenât dancing. Something was there beneath their
depths. Something that worried Adrienne.
She didnât want to tell him that she knew about his
engagement. She wanted him to tell her at his own time.
When he managed to fix things. When heâs ready.
âIf somethingâs wrong, you would tell me, right?â she
asked.
He smiled at her. âThe woman I love just told me she
feels the same way about me. Right now, Iâm invincible. Iâm
the king of the world! Everything is perfect.â
âJustin!â she pinched him on his side.
He pulled her to him and k-ssed her forehead.
âNothingâs wrong, Adrienne. Everything is just fine.â
***
The next day, Adrienne tried to concentrate on her work.
But she stayed anxious. She should be happy. Justin loves
her. Everything was perfect. But somehow, she still couldnât
forget that nagging feeling that this bubble she was in
would just blow up in her face. That she would lose Justin.
Because even though his heart belonged to her⌠he was
still Justin Adams. And his name⌠belonged to somebody
else.
âSo, did you talk to him?â Jill asked, sitting on the
chair in front of her desk.
âNo. I tried to get something out of him. But he
wouldnât talk. He just tells me that I have nothing to worry
about.â
Jill stared at her apologetically, not really knowing
what to say.
âHe finally told me he loves me.â
Jillâs eyes wÂĄdened. âWow!â She suppressed a scre-m.
âThenâŚyou have nothing to worry about, Adrienne!â
âI know. But I can see it in his eyes. Somethingâs
bothering him and he doesnât want to talk about it.â
âMaybe itâs not yet all peachy. Maybe heâs still trying
to sort it out. But he loves you. And thatâs your assurance.
Heâs fighting for you.â
Adrienne took a deep breath. âI know. I just hope he
wins, though.â
She decided to cook that night.
Something special for
both Justin and her. She knew that even though heâs happy
with her, things still seemed off when it came to his parents.
His mother was determined to change his mind and make
him fulfill his promise to go through with their arrangement.
He loved her. And she knew it must be tough for him to defy
his parents.
âSomething smells good,â he said when he entered
her apartment and found her in the kitchen.
âHey!â she greeted him. âI hope youâre hungry. Dinner
will be ready in fifteen minutes.â
He stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her
wa-ist. He gave her a k-ss on the neck and looked at what
she was cooking.
âStroganoff?â
âYes.â
âMy favorite,â he said. He k-ssed the top of her head.
âI love you.â
She smiled and turned to him. She reached up and
k-ssed his l-ips. âI love you, too,â she said. âNow, go wait in
the living room, so I can finish this.â
Just after they sat down for dinner and Justin had
taken a taste of what she had cooked for him, he stared
back at her in awe.
âWhat?â she asked.
âWow! You really can cook!â He took another bite.
âThis is awesome!â
She smiled. âIâm glad you like it.â
âLove it!â he said and ate as if he hasnât eaten the
wh0le day. And it made Adrienne feel proud and happy.
After she washed the dishes and tidied up the kitchen,
she found Justin on the balcony. Lost in his own thoughts,
drinking beer and staring into space.
Her heart almost broke. She knew the burden he
carried. She promised she wouldnât pressure him about it,
but at that moment, she felt like maybe itâs time for him to
share that burden. She realized that it was bad enough that
heâs defying his parentsâ wishes. He carried the burden of
not telling her, too, because he feared he would hurt her or
he would lose her. She wanted him to know that she knows.
That it was okay. That she trusted him.
She took a deep breath and said, âYou donât have to
be strong all the time, you know.â
He turned around to face her. âHey,â he whispered
softly.
âJustinâŚâ She took a step closer to him. âI knowâŚI
know whatâs bothering you.â
He blinked back at her. âNothingâs bothering me.â
She raised a brow at him. âLiar,â she said softly and
she smiled at him ruefully. âI know youâre engaged, Justin.â
He stared at her. Blood almost draining from his face.
She stepped closer to him. âJustinâŚyou donât have to hide it
from me.â
âAdrienneâŚIâm not engaged.â
âI know you are. Stop pretending that everything is
peachy! Like thereâs nothing wrong. I know you have a
fiancĂŠe somewhere and youâre scared to tell me about it.â
He closed his eyes for a moment. He took a deep
breath and said, âAs far as Iâm concerned, Iâm not engaged.â
âJustinâŚplease!â Sheâs getting frustrated. âHow could
you say that? I know whatâs going on with you!â
He gro-ned softly. âI am not engaged, Adrienne!
Because if I was, then you would be wearing a huge rock on
your finger!â He sank on the chair and refused to look at
her.
Adrienne took a moment to think about what he said
and what that meant. Her heart swelled at the thought that
if Justin was free to ask somebody to marry him, he would
ask her.
She went to him and knelt in front of him, taking his
hands in hers.
âOkay. Youâre not engagedâŚby your own free will. Your
parents arranged you to be married to some heiress they
chose for you. Am I right?â
He gave her a hĂŚrd look. He squeezed her hands.
âHow did you know?â
âIt doesnât matter how I knew. But I do. And I know itâs
bothering you.â
He shook his head. âItâs not bothering me, Adrienne,â
he began in a broken voice âItâs killing me.â
She knew that. But whatâs important is his choice.
What did he really plan to do about it?
She took a deep breath. âSo whatâs your plan, Mr.
Adams?â she asked. âBecause Iâm only willing to stand by
your side if you say that your choice isâŚme.â
He released her hands, leaned down and gave her a
hĂŚrd k-ss on the l-ips. Then he said, âWhat are you talking
about, Adrienne? The choice will always be you!â He pulled
her up so she could sit on his lap. He drew her closer to him.
They stayed quiet for a while. She rested her head on
his shoulder. He gave her a tight squeeze. Then he said,
âYou donât know how relieved I am to hear you say that you
will stand by me.â
She looked up at him. âIs that what was bothering
you?â
He pushed a lock of hair away from her face. âThe
only thing thatâs killing me is the fear of losing you if you
found out.â
âI love you, Justin. And I know it wasnât your choice.â
He took a deep breath. âIâve already made my
choice,â he said. âMy parents wonât be happy about it, but
there was never a question of ever giving you up for some
rich brat I havenât even met.â
âYou havenât met her?â
He shook his head. âAll my life, my mother told me I
would marry the daughter of her best friend. Their family
had been very good friends with mine. Even our
grandfathers were the best of friends. They got it in their
heads to join our families and they believed the only way to
do that is through marriage. Unfortunately, my mother
never had a brother. And the girlâs mother was an only child.
So marriage was impossible in their generation. They
thought about making me miserable instead.â
âHow long have you known?â
He sighed. âEver since I was boy,â he replied. âI
promised my grandfather I would do it. Back then, I thought
my Momâs friend was beautiful. So her daughter couldnât be
that bad. And I didnât care about those things yet. Even
when I became an adult I never found somebody I could fall
in love with. So it never bothered me.
âI was raised with this arrangement like it was a part
of my system⌠a part of who I am. And besides, my mother
and my father came from that sort of arrangement and they
were so in love with each other. It worked out well for them,
so I thought, maybe, I would fall for the girl, too.â
Adrienne rested her head on his shoulder as she
listened to his story.
âThatâs why I never committed to anybody. Because I
knew not to become emotionally attached. I know every girl
I got to be with is just⌠temporary. In the end Iâm still going
to marry my motherâs friendâs daughter. So it didnât matter
if I never had a relationshÂĄp before. What was the point?â
âYou were a bachelor for a reason,â she murmured.
He took a deep breath. âThen I saw you one day, in
your office. You were beautiful and I was entranced. The fact
that you ignored me and didnât seem interested in me got
me fascinated with you even more.â
Adrienne giggled. âThatâs your ego talking.â
Justin chuckled. âI always watched you. You didnât
seem interested. I saw you move into this apartment and I
got excited because it meant I would get a chance to get
your attention.â
âMaybe I presented a challenge, thatâs why you were
interested in me.â
âMaybe at first. But the more I watched you, the more
I got intrigued by you. You were always serious, but I felt like
you have a shell that I just had to crack and something even
more beautiful would come out. That night at Gypsys, I saw
a crack in that shell. So I pursued you. Because I knew that
was my only chance.â
Adrienne giggled. âJamila McBride gave you a
chance.â
âThat was hilarious. I already knew so much about
you, and when you gave me a fake name, I tried so hĂŚrd not
to laugh.â
âI thought you would easily forget me.â
âNow, you know, I wonât,â he said. âI never meant for
this to be just a one-night thing. And the more I got to know
you⌠the more drawn I became to you. You have layers in
your personality that I find enthralling. You were smart,
funny and tough. And I felt privileged that you showed me sides of you that you donât allow anybody else to see. The
fact that I was the guy you gave your V-rginity to, made me
feel like somehow, I did something right in my life to
deserve such a special prize.
âOur secret made me live in your world⌠the world
you try so much to hide. After two weeks of being with you, I
realized that I was way into you for this thing to be called
just a fling. When I saw that guy, Jin Starck, looking
interested in you, I felt a pang of jealousy that I never felt
before. I became possessive of you. I wanted you all to
myself and I didnât care anymore if I was previously
arranged to somebody else. I donât want her. I want you.â
âDid you tell your parents about this?â
âYes,â he replied. âLast weekend, I told them that Iâm
calling off the wh0le arrangement. They canât choose my
wife for me. I already know who I wanted to spend the rest
of my life with.â
âHow did they take it?â
He sighed. âBadly,â he whispered. âMy mother was
threatening to disinherit me.â
She pulled away from him and looked into his eyes.
âJustinâŚshe couldnât do that to you, can she?â
He smiled ruefully. âI was hoping she would get it
someday. She didnât know what it was like. She accepted
her fate willingly. She was never in love with somebody else
when she married my Dad. And then they got to know each
other and fell madly in love. So after a few months, it wasnât
a business arrangement anymore.â
âHow sure are you that you wonât like this girl, too?â
Adrienne asked him.
Justin shook his head. âHow could I even like her? Iâm
already too far in love with you.â
She leaned forward and k-ssed his l-ips. Her heart
swelled with joy and broke in pain at the same time. She
was happy to hear him say he loved her enough to fight for her. But she also knew that heâs sacrificing his family for
their love. And a part of her didnât want that for him.
âWhat are you going to do now, Justin?â
He smiled at her ruefully. âI canât live without you
now, honey. I wonât. Even if it means I lose everything.â
âAre you ready to do that?â
âWill you stay with me even if Iâm not Justin Adams
anymore? Even if I make a living bussing tables?â
âYou know I will,â she replied. Then she grinned.
âMaybe I just might love you even more.â
He stared at her for a while and said, âThen you just
made me the happiest man alive, honey.â He leaned forward
and gave her a passionate k-ss on the l-ips.
