Chapter 15

(The duet….)

Chan stared at Lee’s door as he once again heard her sigh and gro-n in frustration from in,side her bedroom. Ever since she brought her piano, everyone was made painfully aware of just how frustrated she was with her trials with playing it.

She would scre-m and yell Everytime she failed, and he was starting to get really irritated. All week long he had to endure that, and it was stopping him from practicing his own singing. And it seemed that stupid cat, Neon or whatever she called it, was adding to the noise, always meowing alongside Lee’s shouts of frustration.

He felt like pulling his hair out.

On one particularly loud day, after giving it a lot of thought, he walked up to her room door, and knocked on it angrily.

She opened it after some seconds, and all the anger he had previously had dissipated upon seeing her face.

He felt his cheeks heat up, as he averted his eyes from her. She had tied her hair into a messy bun, and she was wearing a jumper.

He saw the stupid cat meow at him. Was it wiggling it’s eyebrows at him?

“Uh… I have a proposition to make.” He said, clearing his throat.

“Oh….uh…what could it be?” Lee looked down and noticed that Chan was holding his guitar.

“It looks like you’ve been having a hรฆrd time, trying to play that stupid thing.”

Lee’s mouth dropped open. “Well, you’re right, but you didn’t have to put it that way.”

“Anyway… I came to help.”

Lee narrowed her eyes. “How?”

“You….you…” Chan’s cheeks turned red. “You said that…the last time you saw me play, you were inspired. So…I decided that maybe if you saw me play again, it could help you. I mean, we both have our weaknesses. I can’t sing for now, and you can’t play, so let’s use what we have to help each other.”

Lee’s eyes wยกdened. “O-oh….”

She looked around her room nervously. “C-come in…”

She opened the door wยกder, and he walked in.

Lee’s hands trembled and fidgeted, as Chan walked into her bedroom. She felt her palms getsweaty, as Chan looked around her room.

“Where should I sit?”

“A-anywhere!”

Chan’s head snapped up at her sudden outburst. She bowed her heard, turning red. “Uh….sit anywhere you like.”

Chan pulled a stool by the piano and sat on it, placing his guitar on his laps. Lee gingerly sat on her bed, feeling her heart beating rapidly.

Chan was in her room! And she was freaking out!

Calm down Lee. Calm down!

How was she he only one overreacting?

“Could you stop fidgeting? You’re acting like you’ve never talked to someone of the opposite sโ‚ฌร— before.”

Lee snapped her head up. “What are you talking about?! Of course I’ve talked to boys before! I’ve even k-ssed one!”

Chan’s eyes wยกdened at her confession, and she bit her lip.

“Wow. I didn’t need to hear that.”

“You were teasing me!”

“You were the one that too my teasing too literally.”

Lee pouted, her face turning completely red.

“It wasn’t even a real k-ss. It was a dare.”

Chan’s mouth dropped. “What an utterly stupid and immmature way to lose your first k-ss.”

“I know okay! And I regret it! I was fifteen then, and totally stupid. I wish I didn’t give into peer pressure as well. It didn’t even feel good. I felt so dirty afterwards.”

Chan stared at her quietly, feeling an unusual displeasure at the fact that someone else had taken her first k-ss. “You might regret it but the deed has already been done.”

Lee sighed. “And I’ve had to live with that for the past three years. Why are you getting so annoyed anyway? I’m sure you’ve k-ssed thousands of girls.”

Chan rose his eyebrow at her. Fifidi

Lee’s mouth dropped open.

“You’re kidding. You’ve never been k-ssed?”

“Is that such a bad thing?”

“No…..it’s just, with how popular and handsome you are, girls would be throwing themselves all over you!”

Chan’s face went red, and he quickly turned round to hide it.

“I wouldn’t just go around k-ssing anybody. It’s a big deal to me. And I’d prefer to go into a relationshยกp with the right ideals and values. Unlike someone who allowed herself to be k-ssed on a dare.”

Lee grit her teeth. “You’re being a jerk you know that?”

Chan rolled his eyes. Of course her knew he was being a jerk. He just didn’t know why.

“Well, enough of all this talk. Sometimes I forget what you’re still a little kid.”

“You’re only two years older than me.”

Chan didn’t answer her, but instead began to strum his guitar.

“So? What song do you want?”

“Y-you want me to choose?”

Chan looked up and saw her twirling her hair nervously. He felt his heart thump loudly. She was so cute.

Wait, what was he thinking?

He cleared his throat.

“You don’t have to act so weird Everytime I say something to you. It’s starting to creep me out.” She frowned, and he sighed in relief. Her shy expressions and unplanned blushing were really Messing with his head.

She began to scan through her phone and finally settled on a song.

Chan knew it, and he slowly began to strum the tune on his guitar.

Lee watched him begin to play, her heart thumping so loudly that she almost forgot that she was supposed to start singing.

He really was an amazing person. Underneath all that pride and attitude, was someone he had buried, someone that was caring, and kind, and who was willing to let others help him.

SHe wished she could see that side of him everyday, all her life.

He stopped playing and caught her staring. “You’re not singing.”

“S-sorry. I kinda got lost in the moment.”

He didn’t reply again, and started playing.

Lee opened her mouth and began to sing softly.๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽต

The lyrics floated around them both, filling the rooms and both their hearts. It was a warm feeling, and Chan found himself staring at the girl singing before him.๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽต

He got distracted, and missed a string, messing up the melody. Lee stared at him, her mouth slightly open. He brown hair shone in the setting sun, and the look on her face was pure and innocent.

Chan gulped. What was going on?

He…he…..

The door opened at that moment, and they both startled back.

Aster stood at the door, his eyes wยกdening.

“Chan…? What are you doing…?”

Chan bit his lip.

“Oh…um….he was just…” Lee began but shut her mouth, not really knowing how to explain things.

Chan stood up. “I think your brother needs you. We can do this some ohter time.”

“Chan, wait….”

Chan had already stepped out.

He wasn’t leaving because of Aster, but because if how he was feeling towards Lee.

He went out to the front porch, and began to sing the song that keeps was singing softly.

His voice was getting better day by day.

Soon, it would be back for good, and he could return back to his old life.

But…but….

Now, he wasn’t sure if he really wanted to leave anymore.

(The praise song….)

Aster gave his sister a long, hรฆrd look after Chan left them both alone in the room. She rubbed her arm nervously, and Aster really began to wonder if she and Chan had done something wrong.

She cleared her throat, and finally looked up at him with cautious eyes. “You and Chan still haven’t made up have you?”

Aster appraised her carefully. Something about the wh0le situation displeased him.

“Lee….do you…like Chan?” He asked, ignoring her previous question. Lee’s face went red, and she panicked.

“W-what kind of question is that?”

“Because it has to be the only explanation.” Aster gulped, taking deep breaths.

“For three years, Lee. Three good years. I tried. Mom tried. We tried so badly to get you out of your shell. We tried so hรฆrd to get you to come out of your self induced prison. But, it felt as if we were walking round in circles, and never getting anywhere. You never even saw what your behavior was doing to our mom, you just continued to shut yourself in. And now, some stranger comes in, and all of a sudden you’re letting him in faster than you did any of us. He’s affecting you more than mom or I ever could three years ago. I can’t help but wonder, if the problem was with us, or with you.”

Aster’s hands were balled into fists, as he finished speaking.

“Are you done?” He heard Lee’s voice and looked up.

Her eyes were cold, and her fingers were trembling.

He bit his lip. She continued.

“I’m sorry for being such a burden. I’m sorry for causing you and Mom such pain. And I’m sorry for being so shallow as to open up to someone, just because I might like him.” She said, every word coming out of her mouth being laced with pain.

“I understand how you feel now big bro, so you don’t have to worry anymore. So…can you please leave?”

“You want to shut yourself in again?” The words left Aster’s mouth before he could stop them, and he saw a tear drop from Lee’s eye.

She didn’t answer him again, and he turned round, and left her room, stomping out.

Why…why had he said those things? Why had he gotten so angry?

What was wrong with him?

He passed his mother in the kitchen, and she was quietly reading her Bible. He grit his teeth, remembering how she would always do this three years ago, when Lee had shut herself in.

‘Who exactly are you angry at Chan?’

A calm voice asked in his heart, stopping him in his tracks. He stayed still, thinking over the question.

“I…I don’t know.” He finally answered.

‘Do you want to know?’

“What does that matter? What matters is that I keep hurting my sister. I love her, but I’m just….”

‘Anger will get you nowhere Aster. It will only build strife, and contempt, even amongst the tightest of families.’

“I said I don’t know who I’m angry at! I’m angry at myself perhaps for being such a fool!”

‘Aster, I can’t help you if you won’t let me in.’

“Aster?”

Aster looked up at the voice that was coming from in front of him.

His mom was standing before him, holding his hands tenderly. “I’ve been calling you for awhile now, but you didn’t answer. Are you okay?”

Aster yanked his hand out of his mother’s grip, and walked off, teras already pricking his eyes.

Mrs Peterson stood alone in the corridor, her heart heavy. She leaned against the cool walls, holding her hand to her chest.

“Dear lord, I don’t know what is going on. I have this disturbing feeling that something unpleasant is bubbling in my children, and I feel like there’s nothing I can do to stop it. Please help me. Help my children. Heal our family of the wounds of the past.”

๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

Lee lay curled up on her bed, shaking with sobs.

She knew she was a coward. She knew she was weak. What she didn’t know was how much her weakness had affected those around her, and had hurt her family.

Had Aster really been so angry? Just how much had she hurt him with her foolishness?

Hot tears flowed down her eyes. And now here she was, frolicking around with Chan, whom he had only known for just a few months. Aster had every right to be angry.

She glanced at her piano. Maybe she shouldn’t have brought it down… maybe…

No! If she displayed more cowardice, Aster would only be more disappointed.

If she backed down and gave up now, it would only make him more convinced of what he thought of her.

She stood up, and sat before the piano.

She had to show him.

She had to show him that he didn’t need to be ashamed of her or angry at her anymore. She had to make it up to him.

Tears began to fall from her eyes as her fingers only hovered over the keys, unable to play them.

“I…have to….”

Her voice broke and tears clouded her vision.

Why was it so hรฆrd?

Right now, it was even getting hรฆrd to exist, and to breathe.

Why was she so weak?

Why did the smallest things make her want to give up?

But then, was it so wrong to want to give up? She was only human after all. Why was being weak and giving up being made out to be such a bad thing?

‘Liana.’

A voice called her name, and she looked around the room, but there was no one there.

Wow. A phantom voice had just called her name. But surprisingly, she wasn’t scared. She felt this sort of inner peace.

‘A runner who wants to win a race, doesn’t run it while looking back, or with one leg moving backwards and the other moving forward.’

She listened carefully to the voice, her heart thumping loudly in her chest.

‘What is the race you want to win, Liana?’

“I….I want to be able to play again. I want to stop disappointing my family. I want to stop being weak.”

‘Do you think doing that will be easy?’

“No…I don’t think so, because I know who I am. I am not capable. I am not….”

‘You see that? You’re looking back. You can never win the race that way.’

Liana opened her mouth and closed it. Tears streamed down her eyes.

“H-how do I…. stop looking back?”

‘Lean on me. Look at me. I am forward. And I will keep your eyes forward.’

“W-who are you?” Her hands were trembling, and her voice shook.

‘I am your friend. And I am here for you. You already know who I am.’

Liana felt the tears pouring out in torrents. Her mother always said something about talking to Jesus, but she never knew it was possible to hear His voice this clearly.

“Okay. I lean on you. Take control of my life. Heal me God! I don’t want to be weak again. I don’t want to hate myself again. I want to be strong in you!”

After saying those words, a newfound strength filled her. She stood up through tear filled eyes, and made her way to her piano.

Painful memories filled her mind, the fire, the smoke, the death.

She rose her hands up and slammed them down on the keys, not caring about the noise it made.
Her breath hitched, and every muscle in her body scre-med at her to stop, but she didn’t care. She slammed her hands into the keys again, filling the air with a distorted tune. The more she played, the more the memories assaulted her mind, but she kept playing, not actually making music but just repeatedly playing different random keys and notes.

It sounded awful, but it was music to her ears.

Tears coated the keys, and she began to scre-m.

The memories got worse as she continued, but she didn’t stop, until after awhile, they stopped, and so did she.

Everything was silent.

Her bedroom door burst open, and the remaining three occup-nts of the house stood at the door, frazzled and frantic.

She looked at them, then smiled brightly through her tears, before everything went black, and Aster’s panicked face was the last thing she saw.

๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

Cynthia popped a piece of mint into her mouth as she stepped out of the restaurant and what was the third blind date her parents and forced her to go to. She sighed heavily to herself.

At least before, she used to have some sort of respect and interest in these things, after all, she was getting any younger and her job made it hรฆrd to find a good partner, but nowadays it felt more like a chore than anything else.

All the guys felt like paper characters from books she had read over and over, and she More often than not, found herself comparing them to a certain someone.

She mad her way to her car, then rested her head on the staring wheel. She couldn’t be doing this. She didn’t have time for this.

It had been awhile since she had spoken to Aster. She would need to call and find out exactly what was going on with Chan’s Condition.

It was getting h-rder and h-rder to keep things and people at Bay.

Luckily, after the incident with the scandal, she had been able to get thnigs under control, and much to her relief, another celebrity scandal had occured, and had turned people’s attention away from Chan.

She had been very grateful for that, and she now smiled to herself, thinking that if Chan heard that another person took attention from him, he would go batcrazy.

But as of now, she didn’t know how much longer she could hold things off.

She was afraid that by the time Chan came back from hiatus, he wouldn’t like just how much of a toll his unplanned break was taking on his fans, especially because no one really knew what was wrong with him, his announcement had been so vague, and people didn’t like being left in the dark.

She sighed again and started up the car, making a mental note to call either Chan or Aster, and if she couldn’t reach anyone of them, then she would just go ahead and call Aster’s mom.

She drove up to Chan’s mansion, but was surprised to see the security guards she had placed there trying to get what looked like a middle aged man off the property.

She got out of the car, approaching the scuffle. But as she got closer, she froze upon sighting who exactly it was that the guards were trying to throw off the property.

Her eyes wยกdened in shock and anger as she pushed her way past the guards.

“Miss Cynthia….”

“You.” Her voice was hรฆrd with anger.

“What…what the hell do you think you’re doing here?”

The man glanced at her, his handsome features bearing a striking resemblance to exactly who he was looking for.

“Cynthia.” He frowned at her.

“I’m here for my son.”

๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ
