“Eve!!” Rose yelled shaking Eve roughly but she sounded far.
Turning to the Doctor in fright,she asked.” Doctor will she be alright?”
“Yes it was just a syncope.. I’ll take it from here..” The Doctor replied toting a stethoscope around his neck.
“Okay Doctor..” Rose got up and stood against the wall to watch the Doctor change his patient lying possition before checking her pulse and temperature.

Rose did not go home neither did she leave the emergency ward 1,which housed Eve. Instead she stayed with her till she regained consciousness and got discharged. With her assistance Eve walked out through the reception lobby of the hospital,towards the main entrance and out of the hospital building altogether. She had a deep frown etched on her face and her heart was exceedingly troubled.
Why is Eve under so much stress? She thought as she revved the engine of her Honda Accord.
Why would any man allow his wife do all those shopping and carry such heavy loads?
Why was she in such a hurry to leave?
why did she pass out on hearing the news about the pregnancy?
And most disturbingly,what did she mean by he is going to kill her?
The Belle thought more and more about the circ-mstances that led to her meeting Eve,but the more she thought about it, the more confused she seemed to get.
Unanswered questions, Amazing puzzle,enmashed complexity were phrases she used variously to qualify the happening around her since she met Eve.
There must be something fishy about her restless behavior..she concluded as she pressed down on the accelerator.
With some difficulty,she ran her mind methodically through the happening events, searching for clues,a missing link in the chain of what might turn out to be a tale of woe.
Eve’s reaction on speaking about her husband was cold and unhappy. And she didn’t say anything about him. It’s so unlike her who is always speaking about him.
Where is the link!
With a sigh,she slowed the car to change the gear. Gradually the Honda began to pick up speed in respond to the increase pressure in the accelerator.
Then slowly she turn her attention to Eve who was sitting on the passenger seat besides her with her head resting on the headrest. Trails of moisture were visible on her cheeks,she was crying.
“Eve…” Rose called and she quickly wiped her tears with the back of her hand then turned to her with a raised brow.
“You don’t seem very excited about this baby,what is it, don’t you want to give Philip a child.?”Rose questioned and she gulped.
How is she going to tell someone she just met,what is supposed to remain a secret to her?
How will she begin to narate everything?
“What are you talking about, I’m over the moon..” Eve lied, trying to hide everything under a smiling facade.
“Oh, come on you can’t fool me,I know we haven’t spent good time together but I know you well enough to know you would’ve been jumping for joy right now if you were excited..” Rose whinned.
“I’m excited but you don’t expect me to jump in your ride..”Eve contoured working her brows lazily.
“Yeah I don’t but you know what I’m talking about right?” She queried her friend.
“Rose I’m fine..”
“You’re not fine, you were crying…” Rose coaxed.
“I wasn’t..”
“Am a liar but girl you lie more than I do, infact you’re a guro in it.” Rose admonished fixing her eyes on the road.
“Am not lying Rose,I wasn’t crying.” Eve puckered her l-ips.
“Look if there’s something you want to tell me,go ahead and say it. Remember a problem shared is a problem solved…” Rose cajoled but Eve was persistent.
“Rose I’m fine,it was just tears of Joy..”
“Tears of joy I see. First you were acting all strange,next you said he is going to kill you if you don’t get home quick, you passed out when you heard about the pregnancy,a minute ago I saw you crying and now you’re telling me you’re fine. Real tears of Joy” Rose taunted, trying to cajole Eve into opening up but it was a failing grade.
“I’m fine,don’t worry about me.”
Inspite of her peaceful effort, Eve was expecting her to bark her usual insultive remark; carry de matter go grave na(Take the secret to your grave).
But,to her utmost surprise she kept away from saying anything silly,rather smiled while she carefully studied Eve’s mood.
Then,with a calmed voice she tenderly questioned. “Are you sure you don’t want to tell me something?”
“Yes, everything is fine..” Eve insisted.
“If you say so,I won’t push it..”Rose gave up, at least she has tried.
“Please don’t..”
For the nine minutes it took for her to complete the rest of the journey to Eve’s destination,a floodgate of happening shrouded her thinking faculties.
Now and again,her mind would switch from one thoughts to another.
What was happening to this young lady besides her?.
As she slowed the car again to negotiate a bend into the area Eve had pointed out, another sigh escaped the African Beauty.
The Doctor’s report about stress have been incredibly puzzling. But Eve’s reaction towards the pregnancy wasn’t. She’s come to understand that such reactions only occur when Babies are not expected,or when it has long been expected.
And it’s not long since she got married,so the second option doesn’t count.
But what about the first?
Was she not expecting this baby?
She sure has been expecting it,so what is it then?.
God,she needed a divine inspiration to get her friend to open up.
Even if she behaves like everything is fine,she sure knows that something is wrong somewhere.
“Thank you so much Rose, you’re a life saver.” Eve acknowledged wearily as Rose pulled up in front of the Mansion which was edifice,as she described it.
“Not to worry,what are friends for.?” She said amids smile.
They both alighted and Rose unlock the trunk. Opening it,she offload the bags and shut it then proceeded to gather all the bags while Eve
stood slouched over the other side of the car watching her wearily.
“What are you doing?” She asked as she noticed Rose pick up all the big bags.
“Helping you out..” Rose muttered airily and moved towards the gate.
On an impulse,Eve summoned all the strength she had to bolt away from the car and stopped in front of her.
“Eve…” Rose called,surprised at her friend’s behavior.
“It’s fine thank you,I can take it from here..”
Eve resist for fear of being chidded by Hale.
“Are you sure, I’m only trying to help.”. Rose narrowed her eyes down at Eve.
“I Know but I can take care of it. I’ll handle if from here.” She resisted trying to get the bags from Rose but Rose wouldn’t give in.
“This is just too much for you, remember the Doctor said you shouldn’t stress” she rasped.
“I Know but this isn’t a big deal. I can do this alone, you’ve already done enough,let me not bug you..”
Eve wh¡pped her head slowly.
“You don’t bug me Eve,I just want to help.” She said trying to pass but Eve was in her way.
“It’s alright, we’re home, there’s really no need for that..”she feigned a smile.
“You’re pregnant Eve..” Rose pointed out dropping the bags on the floor.
“It doesn’t matter Rose I can handle it. I’ll just call the driver to take them in,side..” she said skeptically.
“Okay your wish, I’ll leave now..”
“You have my number, we’ll talk..”
“Sure, I’ll pay you a visit some other time..”
“Alright,thank you..”
“Bye Evelyn..”
“Bye Rosie..”
Eve did not go beyond the doorway of the gate. She stood, leaning by the gate watching her departing friend. As if on a second thought,Rose turned sharply and dive towards Eve.
“Take care of yourself alright” she whispered as they embraced.
“I will..” Eve assured.

Hale sat down in front of the plasma,just as an action packed triller was about to be displayed.
He turned down the volume and dropped the remote control on the table infront of him.
Thinking was proving a difficult task but he was determined to think.
He ran his fingers through his thick sleek black hair and a sigh escaped him.
Where is Eve?
Why is she not yet back?
Why is she not taking her calls either?
What is keeping her ?
Could it be that she ran away?
What is this woman up to?
Hale ran his fingers down his hair again. He had no clue as to where to start looking for Eve. She did not know anyone in this country. This he was sure of.
A gentle hand on his shoulder, jerked him out of his reverie.
“What’s eating you up babe?” Came the contralto voice. It was Ashley.
She sat besides him on the sofa and threw her arms over his shoulder.
“It’s getting late but she’s not yet back,what could be keeping her?” He whinned,a trace of unfeign concern in his voice.
Ashley raised her brows.”So this is about her?”
“Yes it’s about her.” He affirmed hastily. “since when did she leave this house, wasn’t it five hours ago or more.?”
“Eve isn’t a child,she knows her way home..” she snapped.
“But what if she gets involved in an accident,or possibly gets kidnapped.?” He capped in the same spirit.
“And what do you care?”
Ashley rolled her eyes,she was hoping for a change of topic. She apparently didn’t feel too comfortable with this talk about a woman she was trying to get rid of.
“You know she’s my wife right,if anything happens to her I’ll be held responsible” he wriggled his brows and raked his hair.
“And this marriage is a fake, you still have to kill her remember” Ashley reminded, running her fingers down his back.
“So?” He questioned.
“So,you don’t have to worry about her..” she said and k-ssed him on his l-ips.
“You’re right,I don’t have to worry about her, she’s nothing to me.” He shrugged, ignoring the nagging feeling in his subconscious.
“Yes you shouldn’t,cause I’m right here besides you..”
She smiled, switching on her charms.
“Your hair smells nice..” He sniffed and k-ssed her deeply .
She returned his k-ss hungrily and smiled..” Thank you love..”
They k-ssed again and again,deep k-sses borne out of geniune desires for two people,but their k-ss was short lived.
Eve walked into the living room clutching many bags. She stopped on her track on noticing the two lovers.
“Look who we got here…” Ashley chuckled, recoiling from Hale on seeing Eve.
“So you’ve finnaly decided to come back.?” Hale capped and she made light of her load by dropping them on the floor but remained mute.
“Good evening…” She said on an impulse.
“You breached my instructions..”
,Hale pointed out, getting up..
“I’m sorry..” Eve winced fear creaping into her wh0le being.
“You’re sorry,is that all what you got to say Eve?” He queried the woman who bowed lightly.
“I_ I_ I didn’t mean to disobey you..” she stammered jerkily.
“Then you must have a good explanation for coming home this late.” Ashley quipped in a venom laced voice.
“What happened.?” Hale asked nonchalantly.
“I fainted…”she expounded and Ashley chuckled.
“You what?”Hale asked with an eyebrow raised.
“I passed out,at the mall. I’m sorry..”
She replied, her voice quiving.
Hale c*cked his head and stared at her through the corners of his eyes.”You lie again..”
“I’m not lying,I swear I passed out. The Doctor said it’s stress..”she splutered.
“The Doctor said it’s stress..”Ashley rephrased, laughing in her head.
“Stress, what stress. Eve where did you go to?” Hale muttered under his breath, taking few steps to her.
“Nowhere.. just the mall..” her voice cracked.
“I won’t ask again…” He thundered.
“I’m telling you the truth…” She backed up a couple of steps but stopped as he shot her an angry look.
He drew close to her.”You’re telling me the truth?”
Eve couldn’t utter a reply but only nodded wordlessly.
“Eve you’re lying to me!!” He huff and raked his hair then made to slap her but stopped as she yelled. I’m pregnant..”.
Maybe that will stop him from snuffing the life out of her… She thought as she watch his hand froze on mid air.
“You’re what?” He asked, dropping his hand slowly as he stood transfixed with shock.
“I’m pregnant..” she rephrased,tears streaming down her pretty face. “Hale I’m carrying your child..”
“You lie Eve,you lie.!!” Ashley snapped and she flinched but didn’t loose her composure.
“I’m not lying, I’m pregnant and it’s for my husband..” she replied dryly but to hurt.
“Then you have to get rid of it that thing can’t come into this world..”
Ashley said and she tensed.
“No!!”
“I’m not lying, I’m pregnant and it’s for my husband..” Eve replied dryly but to hurt.

“No!!” Eve cried. “I won’t let you do anything to it.”
What is she to do?
Even though she isn’t excited about the pregnancy,she won’t let another woman make her get rid of it.
That will be killing someone_ an innocent soul.
“As if you have a choice..” she sniggered walking up to them.
“I do have a choice and I’m going to keep my baby,I won’t let you do anything to it. It’s not an underwear that you get rid of easily.” Eve quiped in her own defence.
“Your opinion doesn’t count..” she pointed out standing besides Hale who stood mute,he still had that dazed look on his face.
“It does, you’re not the one carrying it. ” Eve snapped in-between sobs but Ashley didn’t flinch.
“And your baby is not needed. It’ll just add to our many problems.” She capped, arms folded.
“Why are you this heartless,what did this innocent baby do to you, that you want to get rid of it. It’s not like you’re the one carrying it.” Eve said and bit her l-ips as if to muffle her cries.
“I don’t care what you have to say Eve,that thing you’re carrying can’t see the light of another day, you..”
“That’s impossible…”
Hale who has been silent,muttered under his breath cutting her off.
“What? Ashley narrowed her eyes at him,then at Eve who sniffled loudly.
“No, you’re not to tamper with the pregnancy till I give my word..” he stated with a finality in his voice.
“What? Babe you don’t mean what…”
“I mean everything I just said now.” He said cutting Ashley’s disappointed voice off.
“But she can’t have,that will just ruin the wh0le plan..”
Eve stared at the angry lady,her face was a vicious mask of hatred but that didn’t get Eve’s attention.
What plan was she talking about?
“Is there a plan?”Eve questioned.
“That’s no business of yours…” Hale replied sharply but in a nonchalant voice.
“Am I not your wife, don’t I deserve to know whatever is happening around you.?”She queried the Man but he didn’t say a word,instead he touched his forehead and walked away leaving the two ladies to stare at each other..
Silence stuck in between them.
“You’ll get rid of that alien…” Ashley ordered, cutting off the lingering silence.
“What I’m carrying is not an alien, it’s a human being. And I’m sorry to disappoint you but I won’t get rid of it…”
Eve affirmed and made to saunter pass her but stopped as she held her by her wrist, stopping her movement.
“You’ll do as I say,else I’ll make this house more unbearable for you..” she threatened.
Eve wriggled her wrist free from her grip.”And I believe you heard from him. That’s the only person who has a word over my baby,so apart from him I won’t take pregnancy related orders from anyone least of all you…”
“Ugh!! You’re stubborn but this is not the end..” Ashley sneered and walked away flinging her hair on Eve’s face.
“Babe,babe you can’t be serious! Babe you have to listen to me,that alien is going to destroy our plans.” She yelled climbing the stairs hastily,to meet up with Hale who was halfway through the hallway.
“Witch!!” Eve cursed under her breath as she watch Ashley racing up the stairs yelling at the top of her voice.
Eve sighed, relieved that everywhere was quiet now, except for Ashley’s voice which reverberated round the wh0le building. She frowned at herself realising that in daring Ashely she was bringing in trouble to herself but then, maybe the man is on her side this time.
With a little sigh,she picked up all the bags and stuck them carefully by the stairwell,then wearily she climbed the stairs and into the hallway till she got to her room. She opened the door and in no time was asleep on the bed.

“So you won’t do anything!!” Ashley barked in silence amid pacing round the room.
“What do you want me to do?” Hale complained trying hærd to conceal his irritation towards the lady’s stubbornness.
She looked across the bed where he sat undisturbed. “You should tell her to get rid of it.”
“Eve will have the baby.” He pressed his fingers on his forehead then run them through his hair.
“No,this isn’t what we planned. I’m getting tired of this game, I’m even surprised I agreed to all this in the first place. Honey please..” she pleaded sitting by his side. “Let’s find an abortionist tomorrow,we need to get rid of the baby. We can’t let this baby come into the picture..”
“I understand..” Hale said. “But just calm down and take things easy. I have told you to give me some time,we need to give this some clinical thoughts.”
He was playing for time. In the heat of the moment,all he needed was time. Time to put his thoughts together. Time to try to sound convincing to the distraught woman.
“What do you mean take it easy,calm down and swallow a toad for breakfast?” Ashley lashed out,her anger taking a greater part of her. ” I told you about using protection but you wouldn’t listen,instead you choose to go on that slut like that look what you’ve….”
Her voice trailed off,as he impatiently got up from the bed.
She had noticed a change in his facial expression when he made to get up. She had seen those expressions before and she knew he was angry. She knew she didn’t have to speak to him that way but she was too fargone with frustration.
Ashley watched as he took time to take off his watch. He huffed and hissed,a very long one. The hiss also heightened the suspense that seemed to have permeated the room.
“This is the problem with you;” he said at last,with such venom in his voice that jolted and frightened her at the same time. “You never listen,you just give out orders like a boss.”
Mellowing his voice he continued.” You think you’re the boss and I’m your puppet,what do you take me as,a fool?”
“No but babe you need to look at this from my own angle. This baby will just ruin everything,she needs to get rid of it.”she pressed.
“Not so fast Ash,not so fast..” he said shrewdly, regaining control of the situation.
“What do you think Sonia would have to say if she hears about this?” She taunted.
“Don’t bring her into this..” He warned through clenched teeth.
“I guess she’ll be tumbling in her grave right now,you disappoint me..!!” she shrieked in a sudden outburst that startled Hale but he regained composure soon enough to grab her by her elbow and pull her to himself.
“Briddle your toungue, I’m warning you!!” He warned still clutching her elbow.
“Why are you being this timid,Eve is not needed so is her baby..”she complained her voice growing wild.
“Look young lady,this child were talking about isn’t part of the picture and it isn’t here to stop anything,so keep it out of this game. How can you be so relaxed about killing my own child.?” Hale crapped, pressing out his l-ips.
“Did I hear you say your child?,that thing she is carrying is a bastard and it’s not welcomed into this house,whe…..” She trailed as he let go of her, pushing her roughly to the floor so that she smack against the wall.
“Ash don’t make this a thing,that baby she is carrying is mine and I won’t deny it. Even though I don’t need it’s mother..” he stated as she gro-ned in pain.
“But it’s not needed..” she snapped, scrambling to her feets.
“Says who?” Hale replied savagely,the venom raising in his voice again.
“What?” She questioned, flustered.
“That baby she is carrying is mine,I put it there…” He paused to let this piece of information sink in. “And you can’t tell me what to do about it..”Hale tensed himself,ready to hit her if she as much tried to throw a tantrum, shrieked or argued again.
“Then you’d have to choose between the both of us,me or your baby..” she stated and shashayed out of the room.
