🙆WHO KILLED ATIM🤷
Episode 3.

Story by Miriam Edem.

As Ekpenyong left, I quic-kly took a towel to clean up Atim and he entered dialling a number.
“He’s not picking o, he told me.
“Mbok fiak kod, I said getting up to meet him and he picked up.

“Ekpenyong? A hoarse voice called out.
“Uncle mbok ku yad esit, there’s a problem that’s why I called, Ekpenyong said.

“What happened? Can’t it wait till morning? The man asked.
“Its my Neighbour Ayi, someone died in his house and it looks like poisoning, Ekpenyong replied.

“Who did it? The man asked.
“Is not me o I swear. We ate the same food and drank the same water but I’m still alive. Mbok di wam mi, I don’t know what to do, I replied.

“Young man this is a serious case and not a wam mi story. We have to wait till morning and contact the police and yes I’ll be there, but are you sure you have nothing to do with this? The man asked.
“Oh sir I swear on my late father grave, yak abasi amia mi ufen if I have a hand in this, I replied.

“Its okay, and ermm….. An aut©psy will determine what exactly happened anyway but for now nothing can be done about it. I’ll make a contact to a friend of mine who is an officer and let’s see how it will go in the morning, The man said.
“Oh sosongo akwa ete, thank you sir, I said.

“thank you uncle, thank you, Ekpenyong added.
“Its okay I’ll call back in the morning, The man said and dropped the call and i heaved.
“Thank you, God bless you for me, I said to him.

“For what? You’ve cleaned her up? Ekpenyong asked and i nodded.
“I can’t bear to see her like that na, I replied.

“Its okay, let’s just hope everything goes well in the morning, we have to be positive even though the situation looks scary, Ekpenyong said and i nodded.
“Let’s keep her well plea-se, I said and arranged the scattered be-d, and together we carried Atim lifeless b©dy and laid her neatly covering her face.

I stood akimbo looking at her still not believing its really happening and Ekpenyong held me,
“Let’s go have our rest in my room, he said.
“I feel like she’s going to wake up, what if she’s sleeping? I asked.

“Ayi st©p this and accept the fact that she’s dead and we have been in the same room with a corpse for more than 30 minutes, let’s go, Ekpenyong said dragging me while i took one last glance of her before stepping out with Ekpenyong but surprisingly a police van drove in and our mouth flew open.

“Who called them? I asked Ekpenyong and the woman who left my house c@m£ out and welcomed them,
“Its him, there’s a dead b©dy in his room, the woman said to the police pointing at us and Ekpenyong looked at me as the men approached us.

“Officer plea-se i can explain, i immediately said but 2 men ignored and went in unveiling Atim face,
“Its true, 1 shouted and the men who was outside sternly looked at me.

“Officer i didn’t do it plea-se, i didn’t kill Atim, i shakily said before they said anything.
“Who killed Atim? Who! 1 of them shouted.

“Oh abasi! I shouted not knowing how to answer the same question I’ve been asking myself.
“Officer I think she ate this elsewhere before coming here, Ekpenyong c@m£ in.

“Did you inform the authorities about this and were you trying to escape? An officer asked.
“Yes, i called my uncle who works in civil defense and he promised to call his friend who is a police but he asked us to wait till morning, Ekpenyong replied.

“We are not escaping plea-se, i only wanted to rest in his house, i added pointing at Ekpenyong door.
“We can’t wait till morning and you’ll have to come with us, its important, An officer said and i fearfully looked at Ekpenyong.

“Can’t it wait till morning? My uncle is coming here, Ekpenypng said
“And whats our business? Will your uncle come teach us our job? An officer angrily asked.

“Okay no problem, I’m coming but I’m innocent mbok, I said but I was alre-ady handcuffed while Ekpenyong weakly looked.
“Your house key? An officer asked and i simply told them the door is not locked and they took me away but few men remained………….

We arrived at the station and i was very re-ady to say all i know but i was asked to wait till morning before giving any statement. I was alre-ady Suffocating there and if anyone had told me Ayi Solomon will be in police custody for a crime he didn’t commit, i wouldn’t have believed it.

I was so uncertain of what my fate will be with the look on the officer faces, I’m sure they didn’t believe my story and that made it more scary.

And again, i thought my neighbor said i was a good guy? But the face she c@m£ out with to meet the police was not a friendly one… She didn’t trust me. Besides, how was she able to contact the police that quic-k after giving a bad suggestion concerning Atim? I thought and frustratedly sighed ru-bbing my head.

“Your name? An officer asked me.
“Ayi Solomon, i replied.

“The deceased name, he asked again.
“I only know Atim, i replied.

“Where does she stays? He asked again and i heaved and weakly gave out her address.
“is she staying alone? He asked.

“With her aunty who she helps in catering business, I replied.
“Your girlfriend or? He asked.

“Friend, i replied.
“Shebi you dey sleep with your friend? Abi na friends with benefit? An officer asked and i heaved bowing my head.

I don’t blame him to say that, and i suddenly regretted why i accepted Atim to sleep over when i could have dropped her off at home. But she insisted to stay that night because her aunty traveled to Uyo for a burial, and to think that she will be coming back today to know her cousin died at my place made it more painful………

🙆WHO KILLED ATIM🤷
Episode 4.
Story by Miriam Edem.

I sat there hearing the men conversations and the various phone calls they made and saw the glances they threw at me and I’ll bow my head.
At a point I didn’t know when I dozed off but felt a tap and I quic-kly woke up.
“You dey sleep ba? You still get eyes to sleep shey? An officer asked and I cleaned my eyes.

“Follow me! He shouted and I slowly followed him behind and saw it was dawn alre-ady.
We got to a room and he pointed a seat for me to sit down which there was another empty chair there.
I sat down clueless looking at the officer but he left the room before I could ask what I was doing there.

I cant tell how long i was there alone, but the door opened and 3 men on uniform entered which I greeted them very anxious. 1 sat down and I noticed he was higher in rank than the 2 who stood by his sides.
He looked at me eye balls to eye balls while I almost urinated where I sat. My legs were shaking with such look from him, the only time someone looked me that way was my late father when i was a child anytime I commit at home which a very serious beating awaits me.

“Ayi Solomon what? The man finally asked.
“Sir? I shakily asked not expecting that first.

“You don deaf ba! One of the standing officers shouted on me.
“Akiba! Ayi Solomon Akiba, I quic-kly replied.

“Akiba? Solomon Akiba? The man asked with a tone that seemed the name sound familiar.
“Yes sir, I replied nodding.

“Where’s your father? The man asked.
“He died, 10 years ago, I replied.

“Is your father Solomon Akiba Edet? he asked and i just breathed out.
Instantly i had hope as i nodded bowing my head.
“Leave us, the man said to the men and i raised my head and saw the police men gone leaving me with him.

“Dah nsi woro fi ntem? I know your father, we schooled in the same primary school, what happened? the man asked and I quic-kly went down on my knees… To me I’ve seen a savior.
“Sir I didn’t do anything o……. “Sit down and tell me everything, don’t worry I’m all ears, the man said and i sniffed and sat down.

“Atim is my friend and she decided to visit me yesterday evening. When she c@m£ it wasn’t long it began to rain and she asked to spend the night at my place. Sir I had abak soup i made the previous day, so i made dinner and she was the one who scooped the soup into the plate after i prepared garri. We ate in the same plate and drank the same water. Sir i lie not, the dirty plates are still there because i st©pped her from washing the plates. Then as we were talking after eating, she began coughing and i gave her water to drink. I saw she was weak and asked if everything was okay but she said she’s only tired and she wants to sleep. She laid on the be-d and that was it, but around 2a.m I heard noises as if someone was hitting the be-d, then i woke up to see Atim struggling to breathe, her eyes were almost out of the socket and foam began to come out from her mouth. Oh Sir that is all i know, God bear me witness, I narrated while the man was quiet listening to me and an officer walked in immediately.

“The deceased aunty is here, the officer said and the man nodded.
“Tell her to wait for me in my office, he said and the man saluted him and left.

“Ayi I’ve heard you. This is a very tactical case one has to be wise and careful, you got unfortunately dragged into the mess because she sle-pt in your room and there’s no witness to attest that it wasn’t you who poisoned her. Your neighbor wasn’t there with you, when i questioned him he said he returned from work very late and retired to his room without even seeing you, looks like you two are very close. Nevertheless the b©dy has been examined, she wasn’t strangled or anywhere beaten up, and we also saw the towel you used in cleaning the foam from her mouth, and yes we have seen the abak soup which have been taken for test and your room has been thor0ûghly checked and its clean. Now wisdom is what we are going to apply when the result of the aut©psy comes out and if the soup is proven safe, the man said and breathed out.

“Don’t worry I’ll help you if you’re truly innocent, what i want you to do now for me is calm down and try to remember the conversation you had with Atim before she died. She must have been somewhere before she c@m£ to your place because there are poisons that acts slowly, probably she ate it elsewhere and it reacted at your place. Let me go hear from her aunty, I’ll be back okay, the man said.

“Thank you sir, thank you, i said and he stood up and left.
Hey God i didn’t know how to express my gratitude, i just left the chair i was sitting on to the floor just to calm my nerves and to remember all that i discussed with Atim just as the man said………….
