CHAPTER SEVENTY: Laughter and a Frightening Moment

I slowly roused from my slumber as I heard the sound of Queen Hua waking up. My gaze shifted to her, observing how she gradually opened her eyes and surveyed her surroundings. Confusion was evident in her eyes.

“You’re awake,” I murmured, and she looked at me with a quizzical expression. “Queen Hua, are you okay?” I inquired, attempting to rise from the bed. However, my legs felt unsteady, and I found myself sinking back onto the mattress.

“Who are you?” Queen Hua asked, her voice laced with confusion. “And why am I here?”

The confusion in her words struck me. Had Diamond erased everything about me from her mind? It seemed like an extreme measure.

“Excuse me,” I watched Queen Hua leave, her exit inadvertently resolving many of the problems I had regarding her. Now, all that remained was to find Muchen and ask him why he had been in such a hurry earlier.

Finally on my feet, I made my way toward his quarters. But when I arrived, I was taken aback by the sight of Muchen and Reon laughing together on the floor. The bizarre turn of events left me feeling bewildered.

“Milady, you look stressed,” Li-Mu’s voice brought me back to reality.

“What’s going on?” I inquired.

“Lord Muchen was in an intense battle hours ago,” Li-Mu explained, “but now, it appears they’ve resolved their differences.”

“So you mean they’re friends?” I asked in astonishment.

“They were friends years ago,” Li-Mu replied. “I just have no idea why they stopped being friends.”

My gaze shifted back to the injured Muchen, and I couldn’t help but approach him. I cupped his face, drawing his attention to me. “Are you okay?” Worry crept into my voice. “How could you let yourself get this hurt? You’re bleeding!”

Muchen stared at me, a smile on his face. “I’m fine, Jing.”

“You don’t look fine to me,” I retorted.

“I truly am,” he assured me. “I’m not finished here.”

“What?” I asked, confused.

“Reon is still alive,” Muchen declared, and my gaze shifted to the frowning Reon.

“I can see that. I mean, you two were laughing just minutes ago,” I pointed out.

“That was just the beginning of the fight,” Muchen explained. “We’re not done, and you’re not safe here.”

“Are you two joking?” I asked incredulously, standing up and stepping closer to them. I placed my hands on my hips. “You just wasted lives for a joke? If you’re going to fight to the death, do it now. If you won’t, I will demand that you two forget about this, stop acting like children, and forgive each other for your past actions.”

Reon attempted to speak, but my stern gaze silenced him.

“I haven’t forgiven you for earlier,” I told him.

“I have no desire to harm you, Jing,” Reon growled. “But your husband, I can never forgive.”

“You two were laughing!” I couldn’t comprehend their strange behavior. “Why would you two laugh about such things if you still hate each other?”

“Some things you can’t just forgive, Jing,” Muchen said, looking at Reon. “I can’t forgive him, but killing him might have been harder than expected.”

“Don’t sweat it. You should have killed me a long time ago,” Reon commented with a wry smile. “You just enjoy seeing me bleed.”

Muchen chuckled, and I stared at the two of them, who clearly had a complicated relationship but refused to forgive one another for reasons known only to them.

“Excuse me,” I said, turning to leave. I needed some time to rest and make sense of everything that had transpired today. Muchen was acting strangely, and I needed a moment to process it all.

“Jing,” Muchen called out as I turned to leave. I faced him again, and to my shock, I saw a sword through his chest. He hadn’t expected it either.

I stood there, unable to move, frozen in shock. Reon suddenly disappeared, and the guards rushed to Muchen’s side. What had been a lighthearted moment had taken a sudden and horrifying turn. My legs propelled me forward to Muchen’s side.

“Muchen?” Tears welled up in my eyes. “Someone, please call the physician.”

“I’m not dying,” Muchen reassured me, though he coughed up blood again. “Reon intentionally missed all the vital organs.”

“What are you saying?” More tears flowed. “You’re bleeding.”

Li-Mu arrived just in time to help Muchen, and they headed to the physician’s ward. I remained outside, unable to think straight, consumed by worry.

“You can see your husband now,” the physician announced as he emerged from the room.

“How is he?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“All the vital organs were missed, and his healing is rapid. He should be fine,” the physician assured me.

“Thank you,” I said, and then I rushed into the room. The door closed behind me, and I gazed upon Muchen, who lay unconscious on the bed, his eyes closed. He looked pale, and I realized that he needed blood, but at this moment, I didn’t have enough to give.

I moved my hand close to his face, lightly touching his cheek, eyebrows, and lips. Tears streamed down my face. “I’m so sorry that you’re hurt. I should have asked you to be more careful with Reon. It appears he’s more cunning than ever.” I managed a weak chuckle through my tears. “Please don’t die.”

“I won’t die”

” How are you so sure”

” Because am talking to you”Muchen’s voice reassured me, and I blinked as I stared at him. His eyes opened, and he greeted me with a smile. “You’re so beautiful when you cry.”

“That’s not funny,” I retorted.

“I’m sorry I scared you,” Muchen said, lifting his hands to wipe away my tears. “I just didn’t expect Reon to stab me. But I’m fine now.”

“How about we run away? Leave everyone behind—Margaret, Reon, Alexander, Fang, Mona,” I suggested. “I’m starting to get scared. What if one of us dies?”

“If anyone will die, it should be me,” Muchen said.

“Muchen,” I protested.

“It’s a joke, it should be funny too,” he responded.

“It’s not funny,” I insisted.

“I know,” Muchen said. Slowly, he sat up, nodding to assure me that he was fine. He leaned against the wall and then opened his arms, inviting me to join him.

“Are you sure?” I asked, a hint of worry still lingering.

“Trust me,” he urged. I moved closer and settled against his body, resting my head on his chest.

“As long as you’re alive, I will always be alive,” Muchen whispered, his words soothing my anxieties. “This heart will always beat, so be careful.”

“You too,” I murmured, closing my eyes and feeling the rhythm of his heart beneath my ear.

“I love you, Jing. Trust me, I will always be with you, always.” Muchen’s voice was filled with sincerity and affection, and it wrapped around me like a warm embrace. As I nestled closer to him, I had no idea when I drifted off to sleep, lulled by the comforting presence of the man I loved.

In the dimly lit room, I gazed at Jing, who was asleep on my chest. Her cheeks were still wet from the tears that had streamed down, but now they slowly dried up as she peacefully rested. I couldn’t help but smile at her serenity, the gentle sounds coming from her lips as she slept.

My attention drifted to the window, and I furrowed my brows. In the coming days, staying alive would prove to be harder than expected. Dealing with Lady Margaret was never easy, and not being at my full strength might put me at a disadvantage. I pondered my options and realized that I couldn’t rely on intimacy with Jing every time to regain my strength. It wasn’t a sustainable solution, and I couldn’t bear to see her in distress.

My gaze returned to Jing, and the smile on my face grew wider. Love for her swelled within me, and I whispered to her sleeping form, “To think I can die for you.” Leaning down, I gently kissed her forehead. “My beautiful wife.”

As I held her close, I knew that the only way to win this easily is to take the key from Jing but that will kill her and I can’t have that happening, I love her too much for that to happen, too fucking much.

CHAPTER SEVENTY ONE & TWO: Laughter and a Frightening Moment 2

I open my eyes slowly, attempting to regain my sight as I find myself in an unfamiliar location. Trees surround us, and there’s nothing else in sight. Jing shifts slightly in my arms, still asleep, and I wonder if this is another manifestation of her power.

“Jing?” I call out, but she doesn’t respond.

“She has been with you for too long!” I hear an angry voice, and I turn to see Diamond, Crystal’s sister.

“Diamond?” I inquire.

“You constantly being with her and drinking from her is draining her powers,” she explains.

“I don’t understand,” I furrow my brow, looking down at Jing, who’s still peacefully asleep.

“Being intimate with you should give her enough power, but you keep draining her blood, making it hard for her cells to regenerate,” Diamond continues. “If this continues, she’ll be more like a human with your life which is the key, in her.”

“Are you saying I should die?” I growl, stunned by her words.

“You need to die,” Diamond states firmly. “If you keep draining her, she’ll be unable to regain her powers, and you’ll just be a burden to her.”

“Did you bring us here?” I ask, referring to our current forest location.

“Jing did,” Diamond responds. “That’s one of her powers, instant teleportation. It goes off sometimes when she’s relaxed. Once she wakes up, you’ll find yourselves back in your chamber.”she mumble ” drinking from her one more time, will ruin her chances of regaining her powers”

Diamond disappears after her explanation, leaving me to contemplate what I’ve just learned. I look at Jing, who remains blissfully unaware.

I realize that taking her blood constantly is harming her more than I thought. “Hmmm,” she moans slightly as we suddenly find ourselves back in our chamber. Jing opens her eyes.

“You’re awake?” I smile, greeting her.

“It’s morning,” she replies, sitting up and yawning.

“You do know that this bed should only be laid upon by one person.”

“Am I making your nights horrible?” She tease.

“On the contrary,” I responds then change the topic”Do you wish for power?” I ask her.

“Power?” She frowns. “Of course, that way I could stand by you.”

“Then you need it?” I inquire.

“I do,” she says. “Why are you asking?”

“No particular reason,” I respond. get up, kiss Jing’s forehead, and leave her in the physician’s ward to deal with some important matters.

In my chamber, Li-mu and Alexander await my return. “Why are you back so early, Alex?” I question.

Alexander steps closer. “Mona is dead, killed by Margaret.”

I’m indifferent to Mona’s fate. “Do you know the reason for Mona’s death?” I ask.

“Mona tried to kill Lady Margaret because of her plans to end your life,” Alexander replies.

“How tragic,” I smile and then remove the bandage from my chest. Everything has already healed. “What did Margaret say about the current location?”

“She will be there by 8 this evening,”

“How interesting,” I mumble.

“I’d like to see Fang now.”

“Not until I’m done,” my words still remain unchanged”I don’t trust you, You might set up to betray me later.”

“Am nothing like Reon!” Alexander growls.

“I know that, and that’s exactly why I don’t trust you,” I explain. “Reon will say whatever he wants to say, but you, on the other hand, are sneaky.”

“Whatever,” Alexander huffs.

I watch him walk away and start to feel the pull of my vampire instincts, my eyes beginning to turn red. The taste of other people’s blood is far from pleasant, but I need it. Unfortunately, it’s nothing compared to Jing’s blood, which makes me feel like am filled with powers uncontrollable.

“Milord,” Li-mu enters with a tray filled with glasses of blood. “You might need these.”

“From the maids?” I inquire.

Li-mu nods. “Yes.”

“You always know when I need these,” I acknowledge. I take a glass and sip it reluctantly. The taste is not pleasant, but it’s necessary. I contemplate drinking more in an attempt to regain my strength for the upcoming battle, but after the third glass, my chest feels as if it’s about to burst.

I let go of the glass, and it shatters on the floor. Li-mu looks worried. “Milord?”

“I can’t take other people’s blood,” I growl. ” And I can’t keep drinking Jing’s blood, or she might lose all her powers.”

“What do you mean?” Li-mu is concerned. “You can’t live on Jing’s blood?”

“It’s quite funny, isn’t it?” I furrow my brow. “It appears I’m not meant to live at all, I need to come up with a plan, I can’t take anymore of Jing blood or else, she will lose everything, to think she would have manifested some powers if it wasn’t my drinking problem”

” Milord, you planning on dealing with Margaret without drinking from Jing is impossible” li-mu argued

” I know ”

” Is like going on a sucide mission”

” Hopefully both Margaret and I die in this mission”

” You think you dying will help Jing, she will just wish to die the more ” li-mu move closer ” why don’t you drink from her, don’t tell her about it …..she doesn’t know what it feels like to have powers, it won’t hurt if she never knows, you will be with her to protect her ”

” That’s rubbish” I growl ” deceiving her when I know the truth? I can’t do that!!!”

” That’s the only way” Li-mu insists. ” You can’t face Margaret without your full strength.”

looking at li-mu, he truly did bring more things for me to think about ” leave ” I mumble and he did just as I said, I remain seated with thoughts, I can not do what he said, I can never do that to Jing. though it’s clear to me that I cannot follow that path. I love Jing too much to deceive her in such a way.

Li-mu’s suggestion leaves me with a lot to think about, but I realize I can’t go through with it. I can’t deceive Jing like that. I want her to be strong enough to protect herself.

Jing’s voice breaks my contemplation. “Muchen?”

I look towards the door as she enters, her beauty striking as always. She seems somewhat sad, and her question catches me off guard.

“You really plan on not telling me about this?” she asks.

“What are you talking about?” I respond, puzzled.

“I’ve been listening to what you’ve been saying,” Jing explains, “and Diamond talked to me.”

“Don’t worry about it,” I try to dismiss it.

She raises her concerns. “I’ve been listening to what you’ve been saying. And, honestly, I don’t care.”

I smile, moved by her words. “Jing…”

She interrupts me. “Li-mu is right. I don’t know how it feels to use power. I can’t miss what I never had.”

I’m touched by her selflessness. “But you might keep wishing to have it.”

“And you think your death will make everything right?” Jing’s anger is evident in her voice. “I’ve always told you I love you, and losing my powers for you is a small price to pay.”

I don’t want to take away her dreams, but I’m worried. “But I don’t want to steal that from you.”

Jing stands firm. “I won’t mind. I just need Margaret and maybe Reon dead.”

I shake my head. “I can’t kill him.”

“Why not?” Jing asks.

“Because he’s more like a brother,” I explain.

“Then forgive him!” Jing insists.

I sigh. “I can’t do that either.”

Jing seems exasperated. “Why not?”

I find myself unable to forgive Reon, no matter how hard I try. Jing’s persistent requests for me to forgive him fall on deaf ears. There are some things I just can’t forgive.

Jing seems frustrated with my inability to forgive Reon. “Why is that?” she inquires, folding her arms.

I respond with a smile, as it’s a feeling I can’t fully explain. “Just can’t forgive him,” I reiterate.

She concedes with a resigned “Whatever,” and I can sense her disappointment.

“I be meeting Margaret this evening,” I announce.

Jing expresses her concern about the short time frame. “That’s soon,” she notes.

“Yes,” I agree, noticing the nervousness in her expression. “But we still have time. We could eat breakfast. I’m sure you’re hungry. And then we could have some fun in my chamber.”

Jing’s eyes widen as she attempts to voice her objection” not today, am kinda in my ……” I understand her hesitance immediately.

“That’s horrible,” I frown. “I was hoping you might be pregnant by now.”

Jing retorts, “You don’t seem like someone who wants a child.”

“It’s not written on my head” I explain, furrowing my brows. I can sense that the topic makes her uncomfortable, and she clears her throat.

“Then maybe speak about your thoughts often” she suggests, her tone a mix of annoyance and humor. The argument seems trivial, but I’m frustrated about not being able to be intimate with her during her menstrual cycle.

She suggest, “I should go.”

But before she can leave, i hold her hand and smiles. “Wait, forgive me.”

I look at her inquisitively.

“Why don’t we take a bath and relax?” I suggests. The mention of a bath makes her furrow her brows. “I don’t see anything wrong with wanting to be close to you, even when you’re on your menstrual cycle,” i insists. “don’t give me that look, you being on your menstrual cycle has nothing to do with me wanting to see you naked ”

” Muchen ” her cheek flush from embarrassment

” I will still like to make…..”

She cut me off ” it’s a big no ”

” Amor ”

“Muchen.”

Jing remains resolute, shaking her head, and says, “No.” Then she exits my chamber, leaving me with a sense of longing. I still don’t see anything wrong with wanting to be close to her, even when she’s on her menstrual cycle. After all, the bloodier the better.

As I left Muchen’s chamber, the weight of everything seemed to press down on my shoulders. Sitting in my carriage, I couldn’t hold back the tears that welled up. Nothing in my life has ever been easy, and losing my powers is something I never expected to hurt this much.

The sound of Diamond’s voice startled me. “I told you to leave him,” she said. I didn’t even bother to lift my head. “Lying about your menstrual cycle is not right either.”

“Diamond, can you go away?” I muttered, feeling too vulnerable to deal with her right now.

“You’re too hurt to spend time with him,” she continued. “Can’t you see that you’re the one always losing something close to you? He never loses anything.”

My heart ached. “I don’t want him to die.”

“But he wants you to lose your power for him,” Diamond pointed out. “He is really selfish, Jing. He wants nothing more than to keep taking from you.”

I couldn’t bear to listen to Diamond’s words any longer. I needed to be alone with my thoughts. “Stop the carriage.”

The moment the carriage came to a halt, I got off and decided to walk the rest of the way to my quarters. My mind was filled with a jumble of thoughts. Diamond’s assumption that I was lying about my menstrual cycle was almost comical. I would never lie about something like that. But the thought of Muchen being eager to be intimate during this time both embarrassed and flustered me.

The tears continued to flow as I walked. But it wasn’t just about my powers; it was the feeling of helplessness that weighed on me. I was unable to support Muchen in the impending war he was about to face, and that thought cut deeper than anything else. If I insisted on going with him, I might end up becoming a hindrance. I didn’t want to be in his way.

Lying in my chambers, my eyes closed, I refused to eat after my bath. Time passed by like a slow, agonizing crawl. Morning turned to noon, and eventually, it was evening. I had no desire to see Muchen, not in the state I was in. My heart felt broken, and the mere thought of him facing Margaret alone added to my despair.

By 6 in the evening, I moved to my balcony, my gaze fixed on the stars. The night air was cool against my skin, but inside, my heart ached. The sound of my door opening without a knock alerted me to Muchen’s presence. Without a word, he approached and hugged me from behind, drawing me close.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice laced with regret. “I knew you were upset when you left earlier. I should have gone after you. I’m truly sorry.”

My mind jumped to the conclusion that he was here for my blood. I asked, “You’re here for the blood?”

He shook his head. “No.”

My confusion grew. “What do you mean? You need it to win.”

“I don’t want to win this if it means you’ll hate me.”

My heart ached as I realized he was talking about our previous conversation. I was about to protest, but he continued.

“I don’t want to be the reason you’re unhappy. I don’t want to see you suffer,” Muchen said.

Tears welled up in my eyes, and I struggled to keep them at bay. “Can you please stop?” I growled, the tears finally breaking free. “I know we both don’t want to do this, but I can’t lose you. I’m not sad about not having powers. I’m just sad that I can’t be with you while you fight. I feel useless.”

“Jing,” he called my name gently.

“I feel so useless,” I repeated. “You keep doing everything for me. I hate it. I want to do things for you too.”

He raised his voice, catching my attention. “Jing, they are many things you have done for me. You love me. Nobody but you has ever done that. Despite how I treated you, you didn’t leave.”

“But…”

He interrupted me, determined to make his point. “What I need right now is a child. Give me one, okay? Nothing else but a child. I’m the man. Let me do all the hard work while you sit down and relax. Okay?”

I nodded, feeling my tears drying up. “Okay.”

“Come here,” he said softly, pulling me closer.

As his lips met mine in a quick, tender kiss, I felt a sense of reassurance. I understood that he didn’t want to face Margaret alone any more than I wanted to be left behind.
