I just laughed out loudly then said;
“Mwikali, i know that you are desperate but please don’t take me for a fool. Yes, I slept with you severally with no protection but I knew your safe days. Secondly, you said it with your own mouth that you were certain, the baby is Teyie’s. Lying to me that the kid is mine will not change anything; my decision is final. I will tell you over and again Benedetta, you are an amazing and sweet lady and I enjoyed every single moment we spent together but nothing at all will change my mind; I now work at Benham and that’s where my future is.”
“It’s okay, there is nothing I can do to change your mind since it was all my fault but please accept back the car I gifted you. I gave it to you with one heart, I don’t need it back.” She then said.
They were unable to convince me to go back to the company but they left the doors open in case I changed my mind and considered their offer.
Mwikali’s sudden change of heart and the all of a sudden humility was what got me curious. After having a secret affair with her for so long, she just changed all of a sudden and pushed me away and then now she was back wanting us to go back to the old us.
Out of curiosity, I began investigating the progress in Bentey and I found out why it was on the verge of it’s deathbed. My resignation was not the main reason for the sudden decline in the company’s market demand; my successor was the problem.
Mwikali had hired another person to take over my office without proper vetting so as to hurt my feelings but she ended up crippling the wh0le company. As much as I did not want anything to do with Mwikali, I owed everything to Teyie and saving his dying company was the least I could do to show my gratitude.
I approached Teyie and asked for Mwikali’s office for just one month and then in return, the company was going to sign a contract with our business with Ben; we were going to be their suppliers for five years.
It was a win-win deal since the company would get back to its feet with the boost of our products and our business would also benefit from that since it was yet another market opened. We talked everything with Benson and I took over Bentey for one month; Mwikali was working under my instructions.
In that one month, my work was to vet employees and hire people with potential and ability to escalate the company back to its feet. Within no time, the company was back on track and with our supplies, it was back to the market. That came as a breakthrough for our fast growing business and we opened yet another branch.
I began becoming busy due to the lots of work, I barely had time to play with Viola. Even when I spent the night at their place, I rarely saw her since I used to arrive home when she was already asleep and leave very early in the morning before she woke up.
Business boomed and as time passed by, I began constructing my own residential house. Mwikali gave birth to a bouncing baby boy who looked exactly like his father, Teyie. At the end of that year, the two got married and moved in together.
Mwikali’s conscience was always haunting her for the guilt of what she did to me and even for lying to me that the kid was mine so as to get me back to Bentey; she did everything it took for me to forgive her and we became friends once more though not as close as we used to be before.
One morning, I woke up on Lucy’s bed as usual but something strange happened. Lucy woke up feeling sick and had a fever.
Since it was my day off, we both had woken up late and Viola had gone out to play with the other kids since she could not wake me up. Lucy’s gro-ns due to pain was what woke me up. She got to a point that she could not even stand due to pain in her abdomen.
I just grabbed one of her dresses from the closet, took off her nightdress and helped her wear the dress which I had picked so that I could rush her to the hospital. As I changed her dress, I noted a mark on her right thighs, just next to her wa-ist.
I had never seen Lucy undressed, it was my first time but the strange thing was that I had seen a similar mark before but I could not remember quite well on whose thighs I saw it.
There was no time for me to start asking about the mark, I just grabbed her into my arms and rushed her to my car. I could not leave Viola all by herself so I called her and together we drove Lucy to the hospital. She was rushed to the emergency room and the doctors said that it was just a minor condition; she was going to be admitted at the hospital for three days.
Since Benson was her brother, I informed him about it and for the three days she was at the hospital, he took over my duties at Benham Enterprises.
I had to take care of Viola and go to check on Lucy every single day for the three days then on the fourth day she got discharged and I took her back home; I was dying of curiosity to know what was that mark on her right th-gh.
She was much better and could be able to do soft tasks like house chores so after I picked her up, took her back home and went to work since Benson had an issue to attend to later in the day. After work I drove home anxious to get answers. I called Lucy to the balcony then said;
“Hey dear, I have something I need to ask you.”
“Go ahead dear, feel free.” She replied curiously.
“When I was changing your dress the other day, I noticed a mark on your right th-gh, how did you get it?” I asked.
“I got it when we were kids. We were playing hide and seek when I got caught by a barbed wire as I tried to hide and it gave me the mark.” She replied.
Her words triggered a memory in my head. I had heard a similar story before but I was not sure which girl had told me that.
“Lucy, have we ever met before? Like, have we ever met somewhere else before we met here in this apartment?” I asked suddenly.
My question made her freeze for a while; her reaction was that of someone who looked scared.
“Why do you think we have met before Ham?” She asked with a shaky voice.
“I have seen that mark before but I can’t recall ever meeting you before.” I replied.
“Yes Ham, we have met before but you could not recognize me because I underwent some changes. I know you will be mad at me because I never told you sooner but I did not want to ruin our reunion.” She replied after a moment of silence then she gave me a sympathetic stare.
“Where did we meet?” I asked anxiously.
“Let us get somewhere to seat dear, it is a long story.” She replied.
We then walked to her house and sat down at the sitting room. I sat staring at her waiting to hear her story.
“My name is not Lucy, I just called myself Lucy to hide my true identify.” She said then observed my reaction.
“Who are you?” I asked anxiously…
