CHAPTER 38

Nwanneka was distracted that night. She could guess Paul wanted more than she could give at the moment. His presence was making her do things she knew better than doing. She didn’t want him to try what he tried again tonight as she might be unable to resist him. She felt she had control but with Paul he had more control over her which wasn’t good.

She decided not to meet with him again until she graduates. If he was still available, then they could continue. If he wasn’t, she would move on.

Paul smiled on his way to hotel. “Damn, I was so close” he said to himself. He wanted to k-ss her and nibble at her l-ips. He liked her. He knew he wanted to be serious with her. She ticked all he desired in a woman and more. He wanted the relationsh¡p to blossom. He planned on hitting it before going back but she acted like a V-rgin when he made advances. He believed she wasn’t one; she was too bold and outspoken.

His friends’ girls have spoken about her. They shared how her uncle who was in the military dealt with a lecturer who s€×ually harassed her. He feared the man already. But he only heard things that helped him with his resolve to be with her. She didn’t have a boyfriend in school. Her mother is rich. She is very intelligent. They claimed she was full of herself but what he saw was confidence.

He had to deal with Anne in Warri. She was his favourite second place. She was also confident, spoke with authority, feared no one, had a s€×y body although she was very slender with some h¡ps. She had a good job, she worked at the refinery. She was from a good home. Her parents worked at the refinery too. Her father had been indisposed for some time. He was bedridden. Paul had been unable to visit him. Anne’s family was comfortable. She had two siblings but he hadn’t met anyone of them. She was good in bed and they always had a good time. They were together most of the time in Warri; Port-Harcourt was an escape for him to have fun. She had requested repeatedly to come to Port-Harcourt but he had refused.

As he walked back into the hotel, he realized he had just one more week left. He also had two weeks break before he resumed work. He decided to stay another week so he would see Nikky everyday of that week. He wanted to spend more time with her. As he prepared for bed, he wondered what she was doing then. He would have loved to see her tomorrow but he knew she might not entertain him after what happened today. He would wait until Sunday to see her.

Nwanneka was becoming distracted so she left school for home on Saturday. Her mother was excited to have her around. Nwadiuto hugged her. She entered her room and locked herself in there. She day dreamed half of the time. She wondered what Paul would taste like. She had memories of k-ssing and liking it. Would Paul be a better k-sser? She remembered hating the s€×. She had shared with her cousin Chioma who made her understand she can have a different experience with another man. Maybe because it was her first too.

She laid down filling her head with imaginations. She couldn’t believe an attempted k-ss would trigger this much emotions in her. There was a knock on her door. It was her mother.

“What’s wrong dear? You seem different”

“Nothing mama. It is the stress of school”

“My dear, put in your best. Don’t allow anything distract. What would you eat so I can cook it for you”

“Anything ma”

“Uloma called to tell me uncle Onyedika is ill. She said she is with him in Lagos and the drugs he is on aren’t working”

‘What is wrong with him?”

“He got another promotion. You know how envious people can get. He hasn’t resumed the position and now he is treating malaria and typhoid. I want to travel to Lagos to see him”

“Ok ma. I will write him a letter”

“Ok nne. When are you going back to school?”

“Tomorrow”

Nwanneka sat down to study. She tried to read but her mind kept travelling. She didn’t need this right now. She needed a wakeup call. Something to make her realise what was at stake. She didn’t think her mother would do it well enough; she would just throw instructions without understanding her feelings.

Sunday night, Paul was at her hostel. She met with him there and asked why he came.

“I came to see you. How are you doing?”

“I am fine”

“Can we have dinner together? I discovered a new place in town”

“I will pass please. I went home yesterday and didn’t read at all. I have had dinner already; it is time for night class”

“Is there a problem? Why are you so cold towards me?”

“I am not. I have tests lined up for this week. I haven’t prepared to my satisfaction. I won’t be available next weekend as my mother will be travelling and I have to stay home”

“But you will be back on Sunday. I know you will never miss class. Let’s hang out on Sunday. You can pass the night at my hotel; I promise you, nothing will happen that you don’t want. You leave home and stay with me. I will bring you back early Monday morning. If you are comfortable, we can consider other days of the week. I will stay another week just to be with you. Do you agree?”

“We will decide on Sunday. All I want to do now is prepare for my tests”

“Ok baby. Nikky baby. I can’t wait to see you on Sunday. Let me drop you off at the faculty”

“No thanks. I am going with Priye and some other girls”

“You are avoiding me”

“Good night Paul”

Nwanneka couldn’t believe how she resisted his charm. She decided to focus for her tests and will tackle his demands later. She felt loved when he said he would stay another week to be with her. She knew she wouldn’t spend the night with him but she would see him on Sunday. She already had the outfit for the date.

As agreed, Paul came around to pick her up. She wore a denim gown and flat sandals. Paul couldn’t stop staring at her. It made Nwanneka smile whenever he turned to look at her.

“I can’t believe you going back to the hotel with me. I am so excited. I left since 3pm for your school. I was driving around. Now you are here with me. You must spend the night; we will talk all night. I just want to be with you”

“I am not spending the night. No matter how late, I want to get back to school”

When they got to the hotel, Paul took her up to his room. She was skeptical but she knew he will be easy to wrestle. He kept assuring her he would be a gentleman unless she wanted otherwise.

A few minutes after they had settled down, the intercom in the room rang. Paul picked it up. It was one of his friends.

“You don come back”

“Yes”

“I get surprise for you, come open door”

Paul went to get the door and couldn’t believe who was there. All Nwanneka heard were voices.

“Aren’t you happy to see me? Let me come in” a female voice asked.

“Anne, let’s talk in Fidel’s room. Please, don’t create a scene. Let’s go there and talk”

“Who is in the room with you? Did you pick a pr-stitute for the night? I came all the way to surprise you only for me to meet you with another woman in your room. Who is she? I want to know who the lady is”

“You are raising your voice, you are trying to create a scene and embarrass my guest. She isn’t a pr-stitute; she is my visitor. I would rather respect her by taking you to Fidel while I arrange for her to leave. But if you embarrass me or her, then I will call your bluff”

“Paul, what are you saying? Are you trying to insult me? I caught you redhanded cheating and all you can say is I shouldn’t create a scene? What nonsense!”

Nwanneka had heard enough. Luckily, she had a substantial amount of money in her bag to charter a cab so she walked to the door and asked Paul to excuse her to leave.

“Nikky, don’t go. I can explain everything. I wanted to tell you everything tonight. Please, let me drop you back in the hostel, it is too late to enter a cab”

Anne was offended even more, “What are you saying? You want to abandon me here and leave with her? Paul, have you forgotten I am a Warri girl so soon? Cross this door to follow her and I will deal with you accordingly. …….”

Fidel and another friend came out of their rooms due to the shouting. Fidel asked “What’s going on?” He peeked into the room and saw Nwanneka standing behind Paul. He realized he goffed; he should have asked if he was alone. He asked Paul to step aside so Nwanneka could come out. Paul did. Then he took Nwanneka to his room, took his car keys and came out to Paul’s room. Paul still refused to let Anne in. He said to Paul, “We will take Nikky back to the hostel. Allow Anne to enter the room so she won’t create any more scenes. Anne, I know the girl and they are just friends. I am surprised she agreed to enter Paul’s room today. She’s not a pr-stitute. Please go in and discuss with your man”

Paul made a way for Anne to enter the room. Then he stepped outside and thanked Fidel. He wanted to see Nikky but Fidel refused. He insisted. Fidel stayed with Anne while Paul went to his room to see Nikky.

Nikky’s eyes were red. He knew she was hurt and he caused it indirectly. He sat down beside her and said, “I am so sorry for the embarrassment; I wasn’t expecting her. I wanted to tell you all about her today before she showed up. She came to surprise me. Please, don’t take this to heart, I beg you. We will talk better tomorrow. Fidel will take you back”

Nwanneka didn’t say a word. He came out with her. By the time he went to call Fidel and the other friend, Nwanneka had left. Three of them rushed downstairs to look for her. They saw her walking towards the gate. They stopped her.

Paul took her I his arms and whispered in her ears, “Don’t do this. Please they will take you back. I love you. I swear, I will make this embarrassment up to you. Don’t enter a cab, it is dangerous”

Nwanneka didn’t respond or react. When Fidel’s vehicle arrived beside them, Paul helped her get into the car. “Please drive safely” he said to Fidel before he left. The tears began to flow then. In the darkness, she let out her pain without being noticed.

“Nikky, I swear I was the one that messed up. I should have told Paul it was Anne. I should have asked if he had company. It was because he never has a girl with him. I made this mistake. It is all my fault, please forgive me. Nikky, please say something”

Nwanneka calmed down and replied, “It is not your fault; it was designed by God this way. He wanted me to know Paul has a woman so I won’t deceive myself. Now that I know, I will do the right thing”

“But Anne no try. I didn’t expect her to react like that. Why did she choose to embarrass Paul like that by creating a scene and calling Nikky a pr-stitute?”

“How do you expect her to react? She doesn’t know me. She met me in her man’s room. Her man didn’t respect her. She reacted the way any hurt girlfriend would react. She called Nikky a pr-stitute but that’s not my name; my name is Nwanneka and I am not a pr-stitute”

“We know that for sure. The girls from your university said so. They were shocked you hung out with Paul. I must be honest with you, Paul loves you. There is no girl Paul will chase and he will not get down with her that night. He sees you beyond a girlfriend. See, truth is that he talks about you everyday. This is new to him too. Please forgive him. Paul is a good guy.”

The tears began to flow again. She couldn’t talk anymore otherwise they would notice her voice was shaking. She continued her silent tears which Fidel and his friend noticed but let her be.

Paul was upset with Anne. When he got back into the room, he refused to talk to her. She wanted to fight him but he ignored her. He took a bath while she was ranting, came out to the room and laid on the bed to sleep.

“Wetin you dey try do? You wan sleep? For where? Who be that big nyash you carry?”

“Anne, if you don’t want to sleep allow me to. You have ruined my day already. I just want to sleep ok”

“You want to sleep. Just tell me who she is”

“She is a pr-stitute I picked up. Is that ok?”

“So, why did your friends go to drop her off?” when she got no response she went to take a bath. She laid down unclad beside Paul. She drew close to him and k-ssed him. He didn’t respond. She placed his hand on her left br-ast and k-ssed him again. He withdrew his hand and said to her “Not tonight. I’m sorry”

“Is it because of what happened earlier? I was angry seeing another woman with my man. I knew you might want to catch some fun but the way you responded to me at the door made me realise there was more, much more” still Paul didn’t respond. She continued, “I was wondering if I had been replaced so easily in one month. Paul, you know I love you, why would you treat me like this? Why won’t you apologise and make love to me? You know how much I love us making up”

“Anne, she’s a friend. I don’t have a s€×ual relationsh¡p with her. Tonight was the first time she was coming into my room. I had no plans of having s€× with her. I also wanted to tell her about you because both of you are alike. You embarrassed me. You should have left when I told you to knowing you will be spending the night with me. Why did you create a scene? What point were you trying to prove? You should have gone to meet Fidel and allow me clear up my mess. You know I will always choose you over any girl. This is the character I have been talking to you about. You are not mature and you like to prove you are a street girl. Did she answer? Didn’t she just leave? Did she insult you? She’s mature, she obeyed simple instructions even though she was upset. in,side the room here you would have fought me, insulted me or do whatever but you instead you decided to create a scene”

“Paul, I won’t allow another woman snatch you away from me. I can’t do gentle girl and you will slip out of my fingers. Please, forget it. Is this the first time I am catching you with a babe? You defended this girl. It means you have interest in her. I won’t be deceived. I’m staying for the week and we will stay together. Let’s make up, it has been long” Anne said as she laid on top of Paul.

Nwanneka cried all through the night. She coiled into a ball on her bed and cried herself to sleep. She was heartbroken and didn’t have anyone to share it with. By the next day, she felt ill. She took a taxi home. Nwakaego was shocked to see her daughter in the condition she was. She took her to the hospital. She was diagnosed of stress and asked to rest. She stayed home for another day before resuming.

On Monday, Paul sat with his friends at breakfast. Anne was still in the room tired out from the night’s activities. He purposely did that so he could talk to his friends and go and check on Nikky.

“That girl is something else. She was defending Anne asking what should she have done catching her man with another woman. I didn’t know her name was Nwanneka”

“She said Anne called Nikky a pr-stitute, she is Nwanneka and not a pr-stitute. I almost laughed if I didn’t see the tears in her eyes. She cried last night. It looks like the girl was also into you”

“I’m going to the university to explain to her. I will have to kneel down to beg her. Anne embarrassed her yesterday”

“What will you tell Anne?”

“Nothing, if she asks you, tell you don’t know where I went. I need to see this girl”
