💘 chapter 3💘

I held my breath as I opened the door to the apartment, I prayed Vina was in a deep sleep.

“Where have you been?”
I heard her voice from behind me and jumped almost peeing from the shock.

“Gosh Vina!”
I touched my chest and tried to calm my heartbeat.

“What? You’re the one sneaking in as always.”
She said from where she was sprawled on the couch.

“We closed late today.”
I said taking off my shoes.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore. If you’re seeing someone just admit it.”

“I’m not seeing anyone, I told you already relationsh¡p is the….”

“…. the last thing on your mind…blah blah blah, I know.”
I eyed her and went to the kitchen to grab something to eat.

“Grey came to look for you.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to hang out according to him.”

“Hmm.”
I hummed, Grey and I were good friends but not as close as before, a lot had changed and none of us could deny that. I have been avoiding him since I returned from Cuba. He was dating some girl named Gabriella, they looked good together.

Vina was the last person I wanted to hide things from. I wanted her to know about Kayden, but I couldn’t tell her without the thought of her telling someone else. To be honest, I had more trust in strangers than someone close to me.

:;
Friday came in a flash, the diner was full tonight. We were only three at the cashier, Kate took the orders while I served them.

It was a long and busy night so when I saw Adrian enter the room, a wide smile made its way to my l-ips.

“Hey.”
He said stopping at the counter, it seemed he just left the office. His white button-down long-sleeved shirt was tucked into his black suit pants, the jacket was nowhere to be seen.

“Heyyy.”
I dragged mine with a big smile.

“Still working?”

“Yeah, I get off in ten minutes.”

“Okay, I will wait for you at the last booth over there.”

“Okay.”

I helped Kate clean up shortly after my shift was over, I took two cups of chilled chocolate Milkshake and joined Adrian, he looked so drained.

He was the only one managing the company now, the Sanchesters left Beverly hills after what happened. Should I call them cowards for running away or pretend I wasn’t the happiest when I got the news?

I didn’t know if they were ever coming back, it’s been three years now and they weren’t back, I hope they never return.

“How have you been?”
He asked and s×¢ked from his straw.

“Fantastic.”
Big lie.

“Are you sure? You look so thin.”
I glared at him.

“Sorry, I just hate to see you working like you don’t have anyone to help you.”

“I’m not complaining, I will get there. How are you?”

“Good,” he flashed me a smile

“You call pale eyes and sleep bags, good?”

“It will be gone tomorrow morning.”

“Yeah, right,” I scoffed.

“Uhm before I forget, Tristan is back. He returned last night with his family. I just wanted you to know in case you….uhm…you wanna avoid him cause he’s been asking about you.”
Shared on whatsapp by Martino.
They are back? Where can I find the most affordable flight ticket?

They are back?

“Hey, relax, ” Adrian said placing his hand on mine which had unknowingly balled into a fist on the table.

“I don’t think he is going to bother you anyway. He promised to stay away even if he’s asking for your home address,” He said removing his hand and leaning back on the seat.

“Did you tell him?” I asked already feeling betrayed. After the incident, I couldn’t help but feel like everyone close to me wanted to hurt me.

“No, he might be my best friend but I never wanna see you get hurt again.”

“Good,” I said under my breath and took a long sip through the yellow straw in the Milkshake.

I couldn’t really trust Adrian, I remember Tristan calling me one night a year ago. He only said my name and ended the call. I knew Adrian gave him my number but he never called back again.

“When are you returning to school?”

“This fall.”

“If you need help let me know.”

“I don’t need any help, Adrian,” Everyone assumed I needed help, I was the source of pity and I hated the feeling.

He gave me a skeptical look, I ignored him looking down at my cup that was about to go empty.

“Chlo.”

Kate called walking to our booth.

“Yeah?”

I stared at her golden locks instead, I really loved her hair. I have known her for a year, her dark eyes took a glance at Adrian before resting on me.

“Sorry to interrupt your date. I’m leaving, I wanted to know if you have your key.”

“Yeah, I do.”

“K, goodnight.”

She flashed me a smile and waved at Adrian.

We both exchanged a look after she left and laughed, I didn’t know why we never corrected her.

We talked a little more before we decided to leave.

“Why are you still single?”

I asked him during the ride back.

“I should ask you that too.”

He said taking a glance at me.

“I have commitment issues and trust me, I’m loving the single life.”

But not the single mom, I was not prepared for motherhood and I knew at s×¢k at it. Adrian wouldn’t waste a second to tell Tristan about Kayden once I tell him. I didn’t trust anyone with my secret except Mrs. Porter.

“Same here.”

He said taking a U-turn to my street.

I still felt sorry for him about Karen, he’s been sleeping around since the incident and burying himself in work, I assumed it was to distract himself.

My apartment wasn’t far from the Diner, sometimes I walked home. I stared at the street lights that swallowed the darkness.

“How is Vixen?”

Adrian asked and I laughed knowing he was referring to Vina.

I didn’t know how Vina went from crushing on him to hating him, she told him straight in the face the first time he visited our apartment, she hated him. I suspected it was because of what happened with Tristan, she hated Tristan more than I did.

“She is good, she is preparing for her internsh¡p.”

“Great.”

He said with a weird smile.

“Thanks for bringing me home.”

“It’s my job, mention not.”

I laughed at his choice of words and came out of the car.

“Tell Vixen I say Hi.”

“Will do.”

That was if she’d give me a chance to even say his name.

I waved at him and climbed up the steps to the tall building. I rode the elevator with a beautiful olive-skinned lady and her adorable daughter.

I smiled at the little girl who kept staring at me, I waved and she smiled running to her mom’s side.

I missed Kayden, I wished I could spend more time with him, I couldn’t remember the last time I slept with him in my arms. It was better this way, just Mrs. porter, Kayden and me. Once I make enough money to settle my school loan, I will move to another state.

I admit I would never be the perfect mother, but right now I felt like I was making the right decision. I didn’t even know what was right or wrong anymore, I just wanted my baby to be safe.

I missed him terribly and I wished I could spend every moment with him, but I didn’t want to give Vina more reasons to be suspicious about my whereabouts.

I walked out of the elevator immediately it opened. I typed my password not sure Vina was awake.

I stretched immediately I entered the room.

“I can’t believe you are still hanging out with him.”

Vina said immediately I walked into the living room.

“Adrian is a nice guy.”

I gr0×ned already tired of telling her.

“He is probably feeding that asshole with information about you.”

“Like what? That am a waitress? A housekeeper? That my life s×¢ks?”

“I’m just saying don’t trust him, he is still best friends with him.”

“I don’t trust anyone.”

I walked away, I wasn’t ready for an argument.

I hated Saturday night shifts, teens decided it was the best night to crowd the Diner.

It was more annoying when high school boys are trying to flirt with me when I was taking their orders. I refrained myself from banging their faces on the table.

“Please take the next order.”

I begged Kate when I returned, she agreed cause she loved the attention.

I stood behind the counter after taking the order to the Kitchen. The bell at the door rang, I stared at Nora Sanchester as she walked in with some friends, it was hærd to recognize her at first, she looked so different.

Her blonde hair was now blue with purple highlights, she was wearing a mini plaid skirt, net stockings beneath her Dr. Martins and turtle neck crop top.

She stopped laughing when our eyes met, what she did next surprised me.

She gave me a dirty look and walked out of the Diner, her friends shared a confused look before following her outside.

I laughed softly to myself and focused on work, I didn’t know what that was all about.

Mrs. Carter gave me more rooms to clean today, I tried my best not to argue with her.

Mrs. Porter called me during my break. She just left for the hospital with Kayden for his monthly check-up.

My reckless drinking before I found out I was pregnant was going to affect Kayden’s health, the Doctors already told me after my first antenatal.

The monthly check-up was to monitor his health, I was glad he was okay for now, but I was scared it wasn’t for long. I wish I didn’t consume so much alcohol, if I had known about the baby I would have stopped.

The group therapy I joined three years ago really helped, now the thought of alcohol made me nauseous.

I blinked the tears that were welling up in my eyes away, I didn’t want anything to happen to Kayden, I loved him so much to watch him suffer any health issue because of me.

“Are you okay?”

Jane asked looking closely at my face.

“Yeah, my eyes are just itchy.”

“Sorry.”

Her soft voice said.

Her ginger red hair was tied in a blue scarf that looked too good on her even with the uniform, she was really pretty. She felt insecure about her size that was why she refused to date.

I smiled at her, I wish she knew how amazing she was, her presence always made me smile. When I first started working here, I kept to myself and pushed everyone that came too close away. That was the reason some of my colleagues didn’t like me.

To them, I was the spoilt rich girl who fell from grace to grass.

Hope and Jane kept trying until I eventually gave in and agreed to be friends.

Mrs. Carter dismissed some of the staff early including me which of course came as a surprise.

I called Mrs. Porter and she told me they were still at the hospital, I decided to meet them there.

I took an Uber to the hospital, I was wearing my yellow floral dress and white sandals, I left my hair which was now short down. Honestly, the new haircut was more comfortable, I wanted to dye it black but changed my mind. I just woke up one morning and grabbed a scissor; I cut my hair till it stopped at my shoulder, I was six months pregnant then. I loved the new look, so I maintained it.

I met them on the second floor, Kayden was crying non-stop when I entered the room.

“What happened?”

I rushed to the bed where he was sitting and wiped his tears away, he moved closer and held my dress.

“He wanted to play with the Syringe the Doctor used.”

Mrs. Porter explained.

“Kayden, that’s not right. ”

He just snuggled closer burying his face in my neck.

“Where is the Doctor?”

“He left not long ago, he will be back soon with the results.”

Kayden slept off on my shoulder before the Doctor returned. We didn’t stay for long, we left after we got today’s test result which was good.

“Wait here, I will get the car.”

Mrs. Porter left while I stood at the sidewalk next to the hospital with Kayden asleep on my shoulder.

I stared at the Mall next to the hospital, my eyes caught a familiar face from a short distance.

My heart stopped beating when I saw Morris, he was sitting behind the wheels in a black Porsche car.

He still looked the same except the mustache above his l-ips, he looked surprised immediately our eyes met.

I turned away when I saw Tristan making his way to the car, he just came out of the Mall.

I said a silent praying hoping Morris won’t tell him I was here.

Nothing happened for some seconds, I turned around and the car was gone, I exhaled in relief.

Mrs. Porter arrived telling me a car held her back, I put Kayden in his booster and fastened the seat belt. I entered the car and we left.

That was close.

It’s been a week since I almost ran into Tristan, I guess Morris didn’t say anything or maybe he didn’t recognize me.

Sunday, I decided to take Kayden to the park to play. Mrs. Porter allowed me to use her car. This was the only day I had to spend the whole day with him.

Kayden started running around immediately I dropped him, I watched him closely. He giggled as a white puppy moved closer to him.

He played with an old Lady’s puppy, maybe I should get him one. I wasn’t a big fan of dogs, I was into birds.

I reached for my phone to text Vina. I left the house while she was still sleeping.

I thought of the perfect lie, I typed on my phone with a frown. I didn’t like that I was lying to her.

“Cassie?”

I froze.

Tbc….

Who do you think called her ..
