💊 Emma’s POV 💊

I ran to the hospital wing immediately I received the call from Alex

“You’ve found a drug that can cure it?” I asked standing outside the glass door

“Yeah, all we needed was a very strong antibiotics that kill the bacteria and repair…..”

“Just tell me the drugs you need” I said interrupting him

“Streptomycin and doxycycline injection” he said

“Okay, I’ll be back with it soon” I said I quickly walked out and went to meet Nathan and Megan attending to a patient

“Do we have streptomycin and doxycycline injection available here?” I asked

“Those are rare drugs, you barely see those drugs around nowadays” Nathan said

“What do you need the drugs for?” Megan asked

“Alex found the cure for the bubonic plague, we need to get those injections and administer it to them before nightfall” I said

“We don’t have those injections here” Nathan said

“What about the millitary headquarters where the Captain went to carry out the bubonic plague cause we didn’t have the required equipment, they might have the drugs” Megan said

“Where’s the Captain?” I asked

“He went out with some of the soldiers but he should be back by now” Nathan said

“I’ll go check” I said as I ran out of the hospital wing

“Where are you going in such a hurry sweetheart?” Ryan asked as I bumped into him outside the hospital

“Where’s the Captain?” I asked

“Why are you looking for him?” He asked

“Just answer the damn question Ryan!” I yelled

Two military Captain suddenly drove in and the Captain came out of one of the cars

“Thank God you are here Captain, I’ve been looking for you” I said

“What’s wrong?” He asked

“Can you find out if the military headquarters has streptomycin and doxycycline injection?”

“What’s the injection for?” Ryan asked but I ignored him

“Lemme make a call to find out” the Captain said as he brought out his phone and dialled a number

“Is the drugs available there?” I asked immediately he finished the call

“Luckily, yes, what’s the drugs for?” He asked

“It’s a cure for the bubonic plague we have to go there and get it immediately”

“Cure?” Ryan asked surprised “Bubonic plague has no cure”

“Alex found a cure, he isn’t as dumb as you are after all” I said and them turned to the Captain “Let’s go Captain”

Captain and I entered one of the cars and drove straight to the military headquarters with high-speed and we got there in less than an hour

“What brings you here Captain?” A soldier who seems to be of higher rank than the Captain asked

“To get some drugs from the infirmary” Captain replied

“I was actually about to call for you Ameer, some Taliban forces were spotted close to your camps” the man said

“I’ll take out a soldiers search for them and kill them when I return back to the camp” Captain said

“Great, you can go to the infirmary, let lemme not keep you waiting” the man said and Captain saluted and we left

We got to the infirmary and luckily we got the injections

We entered the car and Captain drove back to the camp

“Am taking my men out for a patrol so go inject those drugs to the infected” he said as he parked the car in the camp and I nodded

I quickly went to the hospital wing and met Andrew and Megan

“You got the drugs?” Megan asked and I nodded

“Let’s go then” Andrew said and we went to the room where the protective overalls were kept and we wore them and went to the quarantined room

“Got the drugs?” Alex asked weakly

He was sitting beside Jasmine who was unconscious

“What happened to Jasmine?” I asked

“She lost unconscious some minutes ago” Alex replied

Andrew went to inject the boy, Megan injected Jasmine while I injected Alex

“Told you I won’t let you die, I saved you” I said as I injected him

“Actually, I found the cure so technically I saved myself” he replied and I smiled

“Well, who gave you the will to live?” I asked raising my brows

“Talking about the will to live, you owe me answers to alot of questions” he said

“And I’ll answer them once you are out of this room”

“I’ll have to get out of here fast then, since the drug has been administered, let’s wait till tomorrow to see the effects” I said

💊 Alex’s POV 💊

“Do you want to lay on the bed?” Andrew asked

“No, I’ll just continue sitting here beside Jasmine” I replied and he nodded

They left the room and I was left alone with Jasmine and the boy

I stared at Jasmine
Even though she’s unconscious, she remains so beautiful
How could someone be so pretty and innocent at the same time

I continued staring at her till I dozed off……….

I slowly opened my eyes and met Jasmine sitting on her bed and staring at me close to my face

“Jasmine! Are you okay?” I asked as I quickly held her hands

“Yeah, I feel much better, I guess the drugs are working” she said

“We’ll be alright soon Jasmine” I assured

“Yeah, all thanks to my amazing doctor” she said with a smile and I chuckled

“How long have you been awake?” I asked

“Been long, I woke up to see you sleeping on the chair” she replied

“So what were you doing all the time I was asleep?”

“The boy was conscious momentarily and I checked up on him”

“And after that?” I asked raising my brows

“Well I just sat down” she said

“You just sat staring at your amazing doctor?” I asked and she laughed

“What’s wrong with you Alex, you are becoming extremely cheesy for your personality” she said

“I know right, what’s wrong me”

“But I kinda like this new side of you” she said and I smiled

“So, about that kiss in the morning…..” I said but she quickly interrupted me

“Am suddenly feeling sleepy, I should probably go to sleep” she quickly said as she tried to lay down but I held her hand arm

“You don’t want to talk about the kiss?” I asked

“Wha….. what kiss?” She stuttered

“You don’t remember kissing me?” I asked and she nodded nervously

“Yeah, I don’t remember” she said

“Let me remind you then” I said as I moved closer to her and kissed her on the lips

💊 Ryan’s POV 💊

I sat in my room drinking from a bottle of whiskey and hitting my leg on the ground anxiously

“Where the hell is Susan!”

I sent her to check on Alex and Jasmine to see if the drugs is really working on them, she should’ve been back by now

“The drug will not work, bubonic plague doesn’t have a cure” I said trying to calm myself down

There was a knock on the door and I heard Susan’s voice

“Come in” I said and she came in

“The drugs didn’t work right? They are still suffering from the plague right?” I asked but she remained quiet

“Answer me!!!” I yelled and she flinched

“They……they are recovering” she stuttered

“What?”

“The drugs seems to be working on them cause they seem more energetic than before” Susan said

“Aaaah” I yelled as I threw the bottle of whiskey to the ground and it shattered

“Ryan!” Susan yelled as she quickly held my hand “Don’t be stupid Ryan, this is just a minor setback, this is not the first time we’ve faced failure, we’ll definitely get him another way”

“Stay away from me!!” I yelled at Susan and she looked at me surprised

“You’ve never been of any help to me, you always……you always fail to do any task I give you, sometimes I wonder if you’re still loyal to me or have you also be charmed by Alex?”

“You are drunk that’s why you are saying all this” Susan said

“Drunk or not, it’s the truth, it’s what I’ve always thought”

“Then you are such an ungrateful jerk!!” She yelled “The truth that we both know is that I sacrificed my life for you, I took an oath when I finished studying to do my job honestly and to the best of my abilities but I broke that oath for you! Instead of being someone who tried to save people, I became someone who tried to kill patients because of you! I betrayed everything ethics I learnt for you Ryan and…….and you’re doubting me?”

“You make it sound like you are such a loyal person but we both know you didn’t do it for me, you did it for the money, I payed you handsomely after all”

“What?! You think I did everything for the money? You think I betrayed the people I work for and my profession for the money?”

“Of course” I said with a nod

“To hell with the money!!” She yelled “The money you pay isn’t even up to half of the salary I receive at the National hospital and you still think am doing it for the money? The reason am supporting you and doing everything you ask is because of us Ryan”

“Us?” I asked

“Yes, us” she said “It’s because of the love I have for you Ryan and when this is all over, when this battle with Alex is all over, I just want us to get married and live a simple quiet life” she said and I laughed

“I have no plans of getting married to you Susan” I said

“What?!”

“You are not my type, am just….. Am just using you” I said as I staggered but she held me

“What did you say?” She asked

“I mean, if you could betray the oath you took for your profession just for money, who’s to say you won’t betray me when we get married” I said and immediately, she slapped me

“Susan!!” I yelled as I raised my hand to slap her back but had a change of mind

“Are you going to slap me back? Do it then you fool, for your information, I believe nothing of what you just said, you are drunk now but when you’ve become clear-headed, we’ll definitely have a rational conversation” she said as she turned to leave the room and we suddenly heard some gunshots and explosion

“What’s…….what’s going on out there?” Susan stuttered

The gunshot continued for some time and suddenly it stopped and everywhere became quiet

The door to the room suddenly flung open and some gunmen stepped into the room with their gun aimed at us

💊 Alex’s POV 💊

I smiled as I laid on the bed to sleep

I still can’t believe I actually did that
Don’t know where I suddenly got the courage from to kiss her but it felt so great and I don’t regret it

I suddenly heard continuous gunshots and I jumped up from the bed

Jasmine is awake too

“What’s going on?” She asked

The boy woke up too and he seemed scared so we went to meet him

“Hey, it’s alright, it’s probably some fight outside the camp” Jasmine said as she hugged the boy

But she was wrong
The gunshot sounded closer and closer and suddenly it stopped

“Looks like the fight stopped” Jasmine said

Moments we hard footsteps and people yelling

“Something’s wrong, I’ll go check” I said as I stood up Jasmine held my hand

“No, we are still quarantined remember, we can’t go anywhere till it’s confirmed we are cured” she said

“We are cured” I said “And am sure you can feel it too, the swollen neck is slowly disapearing too”

“Still, it might be dangerous out there” she said

“That’s why I need to go check” I said and the door to the quarantined room suddenly opened and some armed and masked men came in with guns pointed at us

This aren’t Afghanistan soldiers
This the Taliban forces, the enemy
The camp has been infiltrate!

We quickly knelt on the floor and they forcefully took us to the meeting room

Everyone is already here, Ryan, Megan, Nathan, Owen, Susan, Andrew and Emma
But there are no soldiers and we were sorrounded by the masked men with their guns pointed at all of us

“What’s going on? Where are the soldiers and the Captain?” I whispered to Emma who was kneeling by my side

“The Captain took some of the soldiers out on a patrol this evening when he heard the Taliban forces were around this area so there were few soldiers left in the camp and the Taliban forces infiltrated and killed them all”

“What!!” Jasmine and I exclaimed

“Quiet!!” One of the men yelled and we quickly kept quiet

I looked around, we are all sorrounded

The masked were talking in hushed tones but they sounded worried, seems something’s wrong

One of them walked up and stood in front of us

“I heard you all are members of the medical team brought from London” he said “And I heard there are two medical teams here, who is the surgeon for each team?” He asked but everywhere remained silent

Ryan didn’t stand up and neither did I

“I said where are the two surgeons!!” He yelled and Ryan quickly staggered up

“Here I am, the best Neurosurgeon in the world Ryan Wilson” he said with a smile as he staggered

“He looks like he’s drunk” one of the men said

“Who’s the other surgeon?” The man asked

“Stay down” Emma whispered “Do not stand up”

“There he is” Ryan said “The amazing Alexander Sanchez, the defeater of death” he said laughing

The man walked up to me and held me up by the collar

“Were you deaf?!!” He yelled “Today is your lucky day, I’ll have blown your head of with my riffle right now but I need your services and since your fellow surgeon is dead drunk, you’ll be doing the surgery alone”

“What surgery?” I asked

“Our leader was shot and he’s wounded badly, you have to save his life” the man said

“What?!! Am not…… Am not going to operate on your leader” I said

“I guess you’re ready to loose your life then” he said as he pointed his gun at my head

“Then kill me, I’ll rather die than save your leader”

“Alex, Alex what are you saying, you must not die so just perform the damn surgery!” Emma said

“We are talking about the leader of the Taliban forces Emma, these people are responsible for the thousands of lives lost in Afghanistan and you want me to save their leader to continue his killing spree?” I asked

“You will if you want you and your friends to live, the longer you stand here arguing the more closer to death our leader becomes, so who should I kill first to show you that am not joking here, should I kill this girl?” He said pointing the gun at Emma “Or should I just kill this little boy?”

“No, please don’t kill anyone” I pleaded

“Then save our leader” he said

“I can’t” I replied “I will never save a warlord to continue killing again”

“Do the surgery Alex” Jasmine said and I turned to look at her

“Do you know how many more lives will be lost if I save their leader? I’ll only be bringing him back to continue killing and I can’t do that” I said

“That is not your job!” Jasmine said “Your job is to save life regardless of who it is, that’s the oath we took to become doctors remember?”

“But if I save him…..”

“If you save him you’ll only be doing your job, your job is not to kill criminals, that’s the job of soldiers, yours to save people criminal or not. So do your job and am sure the Afghanistan soldiers we’ll be back here to do theirs” Jasmine said and I sighed

“Where’s your leader?” I asked

“We already took him to your hospital wing” the man said

“I’ll need my surgery team” I said

“Sure but if you try anything cocky, if our leader doesn’t survive the surgery, I’ll kill you myself” the man said and I nodded

💊 Ryan’s POV 💊

“Susan!” I whispered and she looked at me

“You are no longer drunk?” She asked

“It’s hard to remain drunk when a gun is being pointed at you, I was just pretending before” I said and she nodded

“You are Alex’s anaesthesiologist Susan, you’ll be participating in the surgery”

“Yes I know” she said

“I need you to kill the leader of the Taliban forces during surgery” I said

“What!!” She exclaimed and I quickly shushed her

“If the surgery is not successful, Alex will be killed and the leader of the Taliban forces is evil, killing him we’ll be like saving many lives so it’s like killing two birds with one stone” I said

“As if you are concerned about saving lives, you just want Alex dead and am not going to obey you this time, not after all you’ve said to me in the room” she said

“I was drunk Susan, I’ll never say that to you in my right mind, I was angry and drunk”

“Drunk or not, your words were hurtful, do you even love me?” She asked

“I do Susan, I love you with all my heart, and when Alex is gone, I’ll finally be named officially as the best Neurosurgeon in the world and we’ll be at peace, I’ll get married to you and we’ll make beautiful kids together, please Susan just help me this once, help me achieve my dream” I pleaded and she hesitated for some moments

“Fine, I’ll make sure the surgery isn’t successful” she said and I smiled
