💘 chapter 8💘

I had never felt this scared in my life, for the past couple of days I’d been jumpy, my heart jumped every time someone called my name.

I kept looking over my shoulder to see if I was being followed. Every time I saw a police officer or a police car, my heart stopped beating.

Tying someone up and holding them against their will was a crime, right? Ryan was still tied up in my closet. Every time I think about it, my heart beats faster than ever.

I would be going to jail if someone found out what I had done. I was freaking out within me every passing second. This wasn’t something I ever imagined doing, I wished things were different.

It’s been a week since I knocked Ryan out and tied him up in my closet. I’d been cautious in everything I did to avoid raising any suspicion.

I gripped the strap on my bag as I walked home after my night shift, I jumped when I heard a noise behind me.
I turned around only to see a lady and her dog jogging down the street. She smiled at me and I returned it.

I exhaled in relief and kept walking, I had never done anything like this in my life, it felt like I murdered someone.

I typed in my password with shaky hands hoping Vina was not back. I dropped my bags and walked to the kitchen, I got a bottle of water and food.

I locked the door to my room and walked into the closet. Ryan glared at me as I took the seat in front of him.

“Hi, Ryan.”
I smiled at him.

He struggled in the seat trying to break free, I rolled my eyes tired of seeing him try.

I moved closer and pulled the duct tape from his mouth, he gr0×ned.

“Let me go, crazy bi**h!”
He spat.

“You made me do this, I never wanted to do this. You kept threatening me and asking for all my hærd-earned money, what was I suppose to do?”

“You won’t get away with this, my friends will come for me.”

“You have friends?”
I said with a dramatic gasp.

“I’m shocked,” I added with a smile.

“It’s been a week, they will know something is wrong and go to the cops even my grandma, I call her every day and thanks to you I haven’t spoken to her in a week.”

“Oh, my bad.”

“You won’t get away with this, I promise you,” he said throwing daggers at me with his eyes.

“I want to let you go, believe me. I’m just scared you’ll go to the cops and also tell Tristan about the baby,” I told him.

“Wow, are you a psychic? Cause you just read my mind.”

What a fool.

“You know what? I don’t regret this, you deserve to be tied up in here.”
I said in distaste.

“What are you so scared of? He is the father after all, is three years not enough for whatever happened between you….”
I stuffed some steak into his mouth shutting him up.

“No, it’s not enough,” I murmured.

I fed him and left the room after putting the duct tape on his mouth.

I ran into Vina on my way to the kitchen. She stared at the plate in my hand then my face.

“What? I felt like eating in my room.”

“I didn’t say anything.”
She said and searched the kitchen cabinets for her favourite mug.

“Is your boyfriend gone, I haven’t seen him in a week?”

“Yeah, he went back to L.A.”

“He didn’t even care to say goodbye to me.”
She said walking past me to the sink.

“He was in a rush.”
I said with a short laugh.

“So…your internsh¡p, how has it been so far?”
I tried to change the subject.

“Stressful,” She grunted.

“But I love the place,” she said with a dreamy smile.

“There’s this guy, his name is Jacob and he is very cute….”
I pretended to be interested in the discussion about the guy that took her out for coffee.

I was surprised to see Daniel, Hope and Jane walk into the Diner. They smiled at me as they walked to the counter, I took a short break and joined them at an empty booth.

“Sorry about your job.”
Jane said softly.

“It’s fine, I was sick of the job anyway.”

True but I wasn’t ready to be fired yet.

“If you’re looking for another job I know a place.”
Daniel offered, how sweet.

“No, not yet.”

They filled me in on everything going on since I left. I wasn’t the only person fired, some lady named Amanda was caught stealing from the room she was cleaning. We spoke a little more before they left. I was the only one with long hours, so I stayed till ten. I didn’t mind, anything to get my mind off Ryan tied up in my closet.

I was getting bored taking orders and serving the food. The doorbell rang and I looked up ready to welcome the next customer but it was Grey.

“Hey, Chlo” he waved walking to where I was.

“Hi, Grey.”

Let the awkwardness begin. Grey and I have not been that close since the incident. After the incident with the Sanchesters, he tried to get back together with me after Vina and I got our apartment, he tried to make me move in with him but I refused. He always came around and I avoided him, I kept pushing him away till he gave up on trying.

After I got back from Cuba we didn’t speak to each other for months until the day he came to see Vina on her birthday. He introduced us to Gabby, his girlfriend. I was glad he had moved on.

“How have you been? I haven’t seen you in weeks.”
He took the seat in front of me.

“Busy, I’m sure Vina already told you I lost my other job,” I tried to sound sad but it didn’t come out the way I wanted it.

“No, she didn’t.”

“Ohh, well you know now.”

“I will have a pineapple smoothie please.”

“What happened?”
He asked me when I returned with his smoothie.

I explained everything to him but he just ended up laughing.

“I think it’s a good thing you got fired, you don’t belong there.”

“Should I be offended?”
I asked and he shrugged.

“How is Gabby?”

“She is good.”
The look on his face changed, he looked annoyed.

I opened my mouth to ask something else but his phone rang, making me press my l-ips together.

“It’s Gabby, I have to pick her up. Sorry.”

“It’s fine, thanks for stopping by.”
He smiled.

“Bye, Chlo.”

“Bye,” I sang.

Few people in the Diner turned to look at me, I flashed them a smile and picked the flyer laying on the counter.

It’s was past eleven when I finished cleaning, I took out the trash and locked the Diner.

I strolled down the street, the smile on my face fell when I remembered I had to feed Ryan when I get home. I checked the time.

“Shit!” Vina would be home by now. I cursed under my breath again as I started walking fast.

A blinding light from the car driving toward me made me stop. My eyes squinted at the intensity of the light, I used one hand to block the light from destroying my sight.

A blinding light from the car driving toward me made me stop. My eyes squinted at the intensity of the light, I used one hand to block the light from destroying my sight.

The car stopped beside me, the lights went off and the front door opened.

I gave Tristan a hærd look as he came out of the car, I sighed and turned to walk away but he gripped my arm and slammed my body to the car. Well, not so hærd.

I gasped from the movement, I looked at him. He looked furious like he wanted to rip me apart.

“What the hell, Tristan!”
I winced as he held me against the car. He didn’t look like he would let go anytime soon.

“Where is he? Where is my son?!!!”

“Where is he? Where is my son?!!!”

💘 chapter 9💘

Tristan asked with a dark look, the veins on his neck were visible and his jaw hærdened as he waited for me to say something.

“How did….who told you he is yours?”
I changed the question quickly trying not to give him reasons to believe Kayden was his.

“Don’t fu*king lie to me, Cassie!”

“Don’t call me that!”
I snapped.

“He is not yours, I told you I’m married!”

“The hell you are!”
He released me and grabbed my hand, he pulled out the fake wedding ring and threw it across the street.

I gasped and stared at him with my hands fisted at my sides.

“Drop the act already, I know the truth. Where is he?”

“He is not yours, Tristan,” I said boldly, standing upright. My back was hurting from the way he held me to the car.

“Stop, don’t lie to me.”

“The fact you were the first guy I slept with doesn’t mean he is yours.”
I added and he laughed softly licking his lower lip.

“How old is he?”

“None of your business.”
I knew what he was trying to do.

“The trip to Cuba was to hide the truth right, you stayed for almost a year.”

Busted.

“Why do you think he is your son?”
I said looking at the black shirt that showed off his muscles and his impressive torso.

How pathetic can you be Chloe, you don’t admire people you hate.

My subconscious said.

“We have the same birthmark, I saw it beneath his ear at the park.”
I opened my mouth to say something but no words came out, I wasn’t sure of what to say.

“Show me,” I demanded.
He pointed at a s₱0t on his neck with his long finger, I pushed myself up on my tiptoes to take a look.
It looked like a splash of dark paint on his skin.

Kayden had it too, I should have paid attention to it.

“And I have the DNA result.”
He added.

“Wait, What?”

“I wanted to be sure he was really mine, so I stole a strand of his hair when I touched it and took it for a DNA test.”
I recalled him ruffling Kayden’s hair.

“How dare you?!”
I pushed at his chest getting more furious than ever.

“You had no right to do that!”

“I’m his father, I have the right to know.”

“No, you don’t, Kayden doesn’t need you.”

“He is a Sanchester, you can’t change that.”

“He is a Simpson, that’s what is written on his birth certificate.”
I said crossing my arm.

“Oh, God.”
He grunted turning around, he backed me for a while just mumbling curses, he ran both hands through his hair and finally faced me.

“Why are you doing this? I want to be a part of his life. I lost one child already, don’t make me lose another one.”
He said calmly.

I wondered what he was going to do when he finds out about the other twin.

“I don’t care, I plan on bringing him up alone.”

“Is this your way of punishing me? Lying to me you are married and hiding my own son away from me?”

No, I had thought of the worse punishment one could ever give to a human being.

“Call it whatever you want, I’m done having this conversation.”
I adjusted my bag and turned to leave but he stopped me.

“We are not done yet, tell me where he is.”

“You don’t need to know, he is safe.”

“He is my son, he deserves to know his father.”

“He is not complaining, he doesn’t need you, besides I don’t even see you being a good father.”
My last words hit him, he moved away from me nodding his head slowly.

“I know you hate me but please don’t keep my son away from me, I promise I will be the best dad one could ever ask for.”
He said softly, the sadness in his voice made me feel like a bad person.

“I’m sorry that I hurt you but don’t punish me this way, please Chloe. I want to see him, I want to hug him and spend a little time with him. That’s all I’m asking for if you don’t want me in his life!”

“Just one day with him, that’s all I’m asking for.”
He said and got into his car, he drove off in a flash almost knocking the recycle bin at the side of the road down.

I released a deep breath and looked up at the sky. Things just got a lot more complicated. Tristan just made me feel like a wicked person for hiding Kayden.

He was going to tell everyone, Kayden wasn’t a secret anymore. Why was nothing going my way? Ryan was already a burden.

Ryan!

I walked home feeling devastated, I typed in my password and opened the door.

I kicked my shoes off and dropped my bag on the rack. I froze when I saw Vina in the living room wearing my burgundy hoodie which of course was from my closet.

“Vina, you’re back.”
My voice was shaking from fear.

“Ohh, hey Chlo.”
She smiled at me, it looked so fake.

“Hope you don’t mind, I ran out of sweaters and decided to borrow this from your closet.”
She laid emphasis on the last word.

“I can explain.”

“No need, he told me everything. I can’t believe you have a son, a two-year-old son!”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t want anyone to know.”

“I have been with you Chloe right from the start, I trust you more than my parents, I believed you when no one did. You couldn’t tell me? I thought maybe you trusted me a little even if you don’t trust anyone.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I wonder what else you’re not telling me, you’ve been lying to me all this time. You even went as far as to kidnap someone, who are you?”

“I was scared, I wasn’t ready to let anyone know.”

“Well, I didn’t know I was part of this ‘anyone’ ”

“I’m really sorry.”
She didn’t say anything, she stared at me with tears glistening in her eyes.

“You’re not just my best friend Chloe, you’re my sister. I love you and I will never hurt you. So, that was the reason for the vacation? I would’ve been there for you Chloe, I can’t even imagine how hærd it was for you. You should have said something, Chloe. Two years all alone?”
A tear rolled down her right cheek but she wiped it away.

“I’m sorry, Vina.”
That was all I could say.

“I get it, the people you loved hurt you in ways you never expected but I will never be like that. You were there for me when I felt invisible and worthless because I couldn’t speak English when I came here. I have looked up to you ever since and I never expected you to keep this from me.”

She reached down and grabbed the duffle bag on the floor, I never saw that.

“Where are you going?”

“I need a little break from you after what I just discovered. I’ll come back when I feel less hurt and angry.”
She headed for the door sniffling.

“And you’re welcome, I got rid of the douchebag. He promised he won’t bother you or tell anyone your secret.”
She slammed the door before I could thank her.

“Belvina…”
I stared at the door not sure of what to do.

I remembered the first day I saw Vina. She was all alone at a corner just staring at other kids’ play. She just immigrated to the US with her family. Her dad got a work visa and brought his family with him.

Vina was Hispanic and she couldn’t speak English. No one wanted to be around her and they laughed at her whenever she tried to make a sentence.

I had seen her cry countless times at how unwanted she felt. It took her years to learn and I was by her side to help her, that was how we became besties.

I slumped on the nearest couch and buried my face in my palms.
How could all these happen in one night?

Vina was good when it came to threats, I was sure she used one on Ryan. I knew Ryan wasn’t gonna keep his mouth shut.

I stood up and went to my room, his things were gone. I was relieved and sad at the same time.

I laid on the bed staring at the ceiling, did Tristan deserve to be in Kayden’s life?
Will Kayden hate me for hiding him from his father? Was I making the right decision?

I gr0×ned and kicked the comforter.

I hærdly said a word to anyone at work. It’s been a day since Vina left, she wasn’t picking my calls or replying to any of my texts.

I wanted to apologize to her a million times, she didn’t deserve to be lied to.
She’s been there for me, I wish I didn’t keep it away from her.

The doorbell rang, I looked up from the Cashier to the door with a fake smile but the fake smile vanished when I saw my mom.

“Chloe, please.”
She rushed toward the counter.

I turned away telling Winnie I wanted to use the restroom.

“Chloe, please just a minute.”
I ignored her.

I stayed for a long time in the restroom. When I returned my mom was gone.

Adrian called me during my break, I’d been avoiding his calls.

“Hey, sorry I have been busy.”

“You have a son?”
That was the first thing he said.

“I don’t wanna talk about that right now maybe some other time.”

“How about tomorrow, I will drop by.”

“Okay.”

“Chloe, is everything okay?”
He asked like he could see through me from the phone.

“No,” I admitted almost breaking down.

“When do you get off?”

“Ten.”

“I will meet you at your place, I will be leaving the office late.”

“Okay.”

I was feeling so down, I tried my best to maintain a nice smile at the customers.

7:30 pm I got off work since they weren’t many customers in the Diner. I decided to visit Mrs. Porter, it was time to bring my baby home. Kayden wasn’t a secret anymore.

The problem now was money for daycare.

I took the bus, the guy that sat next to me tried flirting with me but I ignored him like he was invisible.

I stopped at a store and got Kayden his favourite candy bar, I could hear a police siren as I walked into the neighbourhood.

My heart thumped against my chest when I saw three police cars parked in front of Mrs. Porter’s house, few of the neighbours were outside.

I walked faster toward them with my heart at the tip of my tongue.

“She is the one.”
The lady speaking to the cop pointed at me.

I stopped in my track with a confused look, two officers approached me.

“What happened? Where is Mrs. Porter?”
I asked as they got closer.

“You are sure she is the one?”
The officer asked the lady that just pointed at me, she nodded.

“Yes, she’s the only one that visits her,” Another lady said with tears falling down her chubby cheeks.

“She was the last person I saw entering her house.”
An old lady told them.

“I’m sorry, what is going on?”
I asked as one of the cops grabbed my arm.

“You need to come with us to the station for questioning on the murder of Mrs. Porter.”
He said politely.

“Murder? Mrs. Porter is dead?”
I asked staring at the neighbours.

“What happened to Mrs. Porter?”
I asked trying to go into the house but the huge officer held me back.

Kayden?

“Wait, my son.”
I said to the officer but he dragged me to the car.

I saw two officers wheel a body bag out of the house to the ambulance, my heart sank. I felt the tears stinging my eyes.
This has got to be a dream, this wasn’t real.

Wake up, Chloe!

“Wait please, listen to me. I need to be sure my baby is okay.”

“What baby, Miss?”
The other officer I didn’t notice asked.

“A two-year-old, brown hair, blue eyes, he’s been living with Mrs. Porter.”
I said with my heart racing.

“Hey, Shawn.”
One of them called, a tall guy came out of the house. His bronze hair was brushed back, he removed the plastic gloves he was wearing. The bloodstain on the gloves brought horrifying images to my head.

“Yeah?”

“Did you find any child or another body?”

“No, we’ve checked the whole house.”

“No!”
I tried to run to the house but two hands held me back

“Sorry Miss but there was no baby in the house, you can’t go in there either.”

“No, no, no.”
I shook my head in tears struggling in their arms.
