It was on a Saturday night; the third consecutive night of partying. I was in company of my four friends; two males and two females. None of us was from a rich family but we had enough money to party consecutively for a month or so. Personally I never knew where my friends got all that money but what I knew was that I was loving the dramatic change in our lives.
We purchased all types of alcohol the pub was offering and got wasted till dawn then we decided to go home and have a nap. We had no designated driver on this particular day hence I decided to drive since I was the only one who could manage to stand on my own; my four friends were totally wasted. The highway was clear since almost everyone was asleep hence I was driving at an average speed of 130Km/hr.
The car was a Subaru Forester, it’s engine power was so tempting to keep on pressing the acceleration pedal. Having been drinking all night long, my vision was definitely blur and my judgement was poor. I did not see the life saver placed on the road; I ran over it. We had barely taken the next corner when I suddenly saw a truck at the middle of the highway.
The Subaru was at a speed of 100Km/hr since the road was not busy; that was my speed when I navigating the corners. When I saw the truck, fear struck me and I froze, I saw death coming. The shock struck too hærd such that I sat on the driver’s seat staring like a scarecrow; I had released the steering wheel and covered my eyes with my both hands waiting to die.
I tried lifting my leg off the accelerator but I could not, my nerves were not responding due to trauma. We were about thirty metres away from getting under the truck when I heard a big bang; something had busted out loud. The steering wheel then swerved itself to the right and miraculously, we missed the truck but the car lost control and overturned.
The guys at the club whom helped my four friends walk to the car were so caring, they made sure that the lady at the front with me and the other three had their safety belts fastened. Since I was the last to get to the car, I forgot to fasten my belt hence when the car started rolling, I was thrown out of the car through the driver’s window.
I only recall the car landing on my left leg before I hit my head on the ground and passed out. Couple of hours later, I woke up at the hospital; I could not feel my leg. I also had no idea what had happened to my friends. There were two buttons on the wall beside my bed, I pressed the red one. Few seconds later, a nurse rushed in and started checking my pulse and eyes.
“I am fine nurse, I just needed someone to talk to.” I said.
“Come on Haman, you should have pressed the green button instead of the red one, you scared the hell out of me!” She replied.
“I am sorry nurse, how did I get here?” I asked.
“Call me Jayne, I am your personal nurse.” She replied ignoring my question.
“Personal nurse?!” I asked perplexed.
“Yes Haman, you are at a private hospital and I was assigned to serve you and you only.” Jayne replied.
I could not afford to hire a personal nurse; my friends could never hire any for me, I became confused.
“How did I get here nurse?” I asked.
“My boss miraculously found you lying by the road side with your car lying on your leg. She was with her friends and luckily, they were driving a strong car; they used it to get your Subaru off your leg.” Jayne replied.
“What of my friends?” I asked.
“Which friends?” She asked perplexed.
“Never mind, I might be hallucinating.” I replied after I realized that she knew nothing about my friends.
I decided to get out of the hospital first then know what happened to my friends.
“Nurse, I cannot feel my leg; is that normal?” I asked.
“I hate it to be the one telling you this Haman but we shall have to amputate your leg.” Jayne replied as tears started building in her eyes.
There was a moment of silence and I could not help it but cry.
“Jayne if you don’t mind, kindly I want to be alone please.” I then said calmly.
“Are you a believer Haman?” Jayne asked ignoring my request.
“I have done so many evil things in my life Jayne, I am not worth in His presence.” I replied.
“Here, keep this.” She said as she placed a Bible on my palm.
In my life, I was always looking for fun but never thought of seeking His Kingdom. Jayne walked out and left me alone; I took the Bible and opened it randomly. My eyes landed on Matthew 7:7. I then closed the Bible, faced up and closed my eyes.
“Lord, I know I have not been a good son to you but let your will be done upon me oh Father. I seek for pardon and absolution from you.” I whispered and then opened my eyes.
I began crying since I was about to lose my leg for good. Just then a lady walked into the room accompanied by Jayne.
“Hello Haman, do you remember me?” She asked.
I turned my eyes towards her and that was when I recalled the one crazy thing I ever did in my life. Her name was Joan, she was my neighbour when I was about seven years old. Back then she was just a middle class lady. One evening, she started experiencing labour pains; she was expecting a baby boy. Joan was all alone in the house hence she started calling for help. I heard her cries since I was playing around her house.
I rushed to her dining room and found her lying on the floor; she was in much pain. I ran out of her house and rushed to her next door neighbour; he owned a car, but I was chased away. The guy hated children hence he did not even listen to me. I got angry and took a stone which I threw at his car and broke his rear window. I then started running and the guy started chasing me. The highway was about a hundred meters away; I was running towards the highway.
The guy stopped chasing me after he saw that I was just a metre away from the highway and there was a oncoming car. I was about to get hit by the oncoming car when it suddenly halted just in front of me but due to shock; I fell on the road. I took advantage of that situation to persuade the lady driving the car to rush Joan to the hospital. Joan got to the hospital just in time and she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. We then shifted to another neighbourhood and that was the last time I saw her until she showed up at the hospital.
“Hey Joan, how is your son?” I asked smiling at her after I saw her face.
She then opened the door and a man walked in; he was wearing a lab coat on top of his shirt.
“Haman, meet Laxsmart, my son. Son, this was the small brave boy who saved your life; he is the reason why I managed to get to the hospital and give birth to you.” Joan said smiling at the young man; he definitely looked much younger.
“Hey Haman, my mum told me much about you and how you risked your life to save hers and mine; it is a pleasure to finally meet you.” Laxsmart said smiling at me.
“Are you a doctor?” I asked after I noted that he had a name tag on his coat.
“Yes Haman, I am a doctor and I have some good news for you.” He replied.
There was a moment of silence as I anxiously waited to hear the good news.
“My mum told me about your leg but I am here to tell you that we found a way to heal your leg, we shall not be amputating it. We have been working on a project to rescue accident victims who are about to lose their limbs, and after several testing, the project is finally a success; you will be our first lucky patient.” Laxsmart added.
I could not believe my ears; tears of joy started cascading down my cheeks.
“Shall we pray?” I asked looking at Jayne smiling.
We all held hands and prayed. After the prayers, Joan looked at me and said;
“Haman, we found four different footsteps beside the car heading towards the highway; I think they were people who had come to rob you, and left you for dead since we did not find any of your personal things in the car. We called the police are investigating the matter.”
“There is no need for that Joan; those four were passengers in the car and they were lucky to get away with minor injuries. They did not want to carry the burden, hence they left me behind so that I could be someone else’s burden. They are the people I used to call my best friends.” I replied calmly.
That was when I realized that the people I thought that they were my true friends, had abandoned me during the time of need but my only true friend, Jesus Christ came to my rescue the time I needed it most.

In life, you might have all the rich people as your friends, but you will never find a friend richer than Jesus Christ. Friends will abandon you during the time of need, but He will carry you over the valley of the shadow of death. Instead of having your hopes on mankind, have faith in Him.
Glory Be to God.
