It hurts to leave a light on for somebody especially someone who doesn’t realize the hotness and heaviness of the light in your hands. Margret never knew that the constant burning of her light was held by Crucifix whom she snubbed at the restaurant. Oh, poor boy. You can imagine the pain he felt.

When you think you’re first falling in love, just then you realize you’re falling out of love. This was exactly Crucifix’ condition at the first time he tried to establish conversation with whom he loved so much at heart and at first sight. Nevertheless, he never wanted that to spoil his day but Margret and her friends made it the worst day for him. How??

Split of woods could be seen scattered on the floor of the restaurant backyard with unsplit one that rested under Crucifix’ foot which had a bathroom slipper. However, his singlet had been soaked with sweat and his eyes never departed from the door through which Margret left the backyard disdainfully. He averted his eyes, raised the axe to chop the last wood, but embarrassing cracking laugher from two girls stopped him. He turned to see Rose and Alice, giggling which after they eventually left. That caught Crucifix’ attention, first, he analyzed himself to know if he was a thing of ridicule. Gush! The girls’ attitude seemed like he pooped on his pants, so he needed to go know why. Through the usual opening on the wall of the restaurant, he watched and listened to the three girls.

“Why did you even look at such a boy twice? A miserable wood chopper.” Rose lowered her voice, yet Crucifix could hear her. Her statement was like a dagger piercing through his heart.

“I didn’t even know what came over me?” Margret replied sarcastically.

“Babe, in as much as he looks ridiculous, let’s not be judgemental. He only said hi.” Alice was kind of objective to the mindset.

“Trust me, I saw more than ‘hi’ in his eyes. He was definitely up to something.”

“Love?” Rose laughed while Alice giggled.

“Who knows? He might be the mysterious guy dropping all these packages at your doorstep.” Alice substantiated mockingly.

“No way!” Margret exclaimed, cutting half the air with her hand. “I bet he can’t even afford his bathroom slippers. Like how the hell can he afford those things especially the gown?”

What the heck!? Initially, Rose’s statement got Crucifix’ heat piercing with a dagger but Margret’s last statement shattered it completely, so he was forced to leave the wall. Of course, yes, he couldn’t afford the gown but thanks to Raina. Oh, what would he have done without the kind hearted girl? Nevertheless, Crucifix walked back to his unsplit log of wood, bent down to carry his axe but the smooth metal suddenly became heavier than the wood itself. Evidence of heartbreak!

The sun had gone down, creating a lovely weather for the day. A multiple distant horn from vehicles could tell that there was a traffic nearby the residence of Adams. Margret stepped down from a cab with her bag behind her. It is just a few steps from the main road to her house. Therefore she began walking, listening to the multiple horns and a distant barking dog at the neighborhood. Getting closer to their house, she saw a man on a ladder on the wall of the house. As she wondered what he was doing there, Eda came out.

“Hey, Margie…”

“Mama Eda, what’s going on? What’s that man doing up there?” she interrupted her.

“Good afternoon to you too, Margie.” Eda replied oddly.

Margret exhaled shamefully. “I’m sorry, Mama Eda.”

“Well, the man is installing a CCTV camera so that we can actually catch the ‘he’ or, ‘she’ who wants to mesmerize your emotions. Your father, Adams, called the installation man when I told him…”

“You did what?!” Margret opened her eyes widely. “You told my father someone is dropping gifts for me?”

“Hell no!” Eda stared at the young girl. “I told him another thing. And why have you suddenly sounding like you have a boyfriend whom your father shouldn’t know about?”

“I don’t. I just don’t want to give them such impression for now.” She pecked her happily and surged towards the door of the house. “I love you, mama Eda” her voice echoed from a distance.

Margret hungrily walked into the dining room after dropping her bag. Her food had been served already so she exerted her wait on the dining chair to devour the stew rice. Immediately she placed a spoon in her mouth, Crucifix’ staring image flashed into her mind. She became totally lost picturing herself once more in the eyes and presence of the boy. Holy shit! What was that?! It was definitely not love at first sight too.

“Margret?” Eda’s voice startled her. “Why are you lost?” she asked her.

She dropped her spoon. “I’m feeling guilty of something, mama Eda.”

“What?” The woman sat on opposite chair.

“I snubbed a boy.”

“Is normal for girls to snub boys.”

“Yeah, but I don’t know why I feel this one isn’t normal.” Both stared at each other….

The sun had totally set and reflected once more on the creaky old building of Crucifix. The young boy seated alone on a bench in front of the house while a plate of covered food rested on a stool before him. He was so sad that the sound of chirping crickets and birds seemed to give a rhymful beat to the song of misery playing in his head. Unknowingly to him that his grandfather was monitoring him from behind.

The old man was always on bogus trousers and shirt with a face cap to match it. He walked to his grandson and sat beside him. His presence stopped the songs of misery in Crucifix’ head, though not totally.

“Papa, you’re…”

“What bothers you, young man? Why are you absentminded?” the old man interrupted him.

“I am not absentminded. It is the presence of mind that makes me unaware of everything else.” Crucifix replied.

” Just few hours ago, you were bobbling and boiling happily and now you’re cold.”

Crucifix forced out a smile. “I’m not cold, Papa.”

Of course, you’re not. Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad. And a vibrant boy of your age, only one thing can get you sad.”

Crucifix looked at him to continue. Of course the old man had to continue. To make it more interesting, he removed his cap and placed it on a space on the bench.

“Come on, son. I was once a teenager.” he began. “Teenagers think about nothing except s–xuality and the opposite gender. Therefore is still that same gender that can get their hopes up and gets it down too thereby making them sad. But do you know the amazing thing about all this hurtful feelings?”

Crucifix looked at him with a smile. “Why do I have the feelings that you want to start lecturing me about the mind again?”

“Why shouldn’t I?! You are a mind reader. You should learn how the mind works so you don’t go out of control like you did in your previous schools. Moreover reading people’s mind gets your own mind at risk of total damage.” he pointed a finger on Crucifix’ head as he continued. “A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. The mind is like a television antenna. The television becomes clearer when it’s placed at the right signal. When you take the antenna off the signal, the TV screen begins to have a vision problem. So the mind is the antenna of a human body.” he brought down his finger.

Not only did silence returned to the vecinity, the sound of the chirping crickets and birds returned to Crucifix’ ear too. His head was already down why Geb waited for him to speak. Courageously, he raised the head and said, “I actually heard them making mockery of me.”

“The other gender?”

“Yes.”

“And you love one of them?”

Crucifix nodded his head as an afterthought. “At first sight.” he mumbled but surprisingly heard his grandfather laughing out loud. He suddenly stopped, picked his staff and hit it painfully on the ground.

“Cross, do not let anyone walk through your mind with their dirty feet! You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace. If you can’t change someone’s opinion about you, you’re as good as dead. The snake which cannot cast its skin has to die. As well the minds which are prevented from changing their opinions; they cease to be mind. Oh, come on, lover boy.” he shook his head like a kid and continued. “I’ll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there’s evidence of any thinking going on in,side it.” he paused for the words to assimilate into his brain.

Crucifix chuckled. “I don’t get this one, Papa.” he said.

“You don’t have to, but you will one day. All what I’m saying is that happiness depends on your mindset and attitude not someone’s opinion about you.” He picked his cap, stood up and stretched his staff. “Get prepared, we’re going to Kenny High to register you for your final grade.”

“But my money is not complete yet.” Crucifix complained.

“Who needs your money? Your old man never lacks” Geb replied, spreading his hands.

“Oh, my God!” Crucifix rushed up and fixed himself in the shelter of the hands which the grandfather enclosed on him warmly. The boy went emotional, he couldn’t hold back the tears of joy. “Thank you so much, Papa. God bless you so much too.” his grandfather’s bogus shirt couldn’t make his voice audible enough. Quickly, he disengaged from him, grabbed his bicycle to pedal.

“Where are you going, Cross?” Geb asked.

“Not going far, Papa!” his voice echoed from a distant darkness. Crucifix kept drying his tears as he kept pedaling away. Yes, you got it. You know where he’s going to…..
