EPISODE 85

Kathleen quic-kly made a bowl cornflakes for herself and ate as quic-kly as she could before swallowing the medicine. By the time she was done, her mother and Isioma were alre-ady standing outside with Pete and Amanda.

Pete opened the door for the others to get in, and then gave her a once over as she approached the car. She tried not to meet his gaze, but didn’t escape the grin on his face as he held out the door for her to get in, “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Fine thank you.” Kathleen said as she quic-kly got in.

The drive to church was uneventful as neither Pete nor Kathleen said a word to each other. Amanda however kept the car lively as she kept chattering excitedly about her friends at school.

Pete couldn’t help wondering how much Kathleen remembered about last night, and why she seemed so embarr@ssed this morning. He chuckled quietly when he remembered her response when he told her he thought he was beginning to fall for her.

“I think I’m beginning to fall for you.” He had said.

“You think? Let me know when you’re sure… Or when you have finished falling.” She had said with a yawn ma-king him chuckle.

“What about you Kat? How do you feel about me after our d@t£?” He had asked after a while.

“Kat?” He had called, tapping her hand gently when he got no response, but instead heard her snoring softly.

“Hm?” She had answered sleepily.

“Do you like me?” Pete rephrased.

“Everyone likes you. Isn’t that why they are all badmouthing me at the office?” She asked sleepily.

“I’m asking about you.”

“Why would I let you k!ssme if I don’t like you?” She had asked in a tone that said he was asking a silly question.

“So I take it you like me k!ss!ngyou?” Pete had asked with a grin.

“It’s always better in my dream though. I want to sleep.” Kathleen had pleaded as she took off her wig and threw it in the back seat before resting her head on the window and dozing off again.

Kathleen’s mother noticed the smile which was playing on Pete’sl-ips as he drove, and she also noticed how Kathleen kept her face turned to the other side of the car. She couldn’t help wondering what had transpired between them the previous day.

On getting to church, Amanda was taken to the children church by one of the ushers, and another usher naturally @ssumed Pete and Kathleen were a couple, so they were directed to somewhere they could sit together, and then Kathleen’s mom and Isioma sat down elsewhere.

Kathleen had never been more aware of Pete’s pres£nce as she was that morning. It seemed like he had sprayed a special perfume because even his scent seemed to overwhelm her s-en-ses that morning. During the praise and worsh!psession she tried not to look in his direction or allow her b©dy brush his as she danced.

Pete pretended not to notice the extra care she was putting into not looking in his direction or brushing b©dy with him. When it was time to sit down after the praise and prayer session, the minister on the altar said, “Turn to the handsome brother or beautiful sister sitting beside you and welcome him or her to the service of today with a beautiful smile.”

“You’re welcome to today’s service.” Kathleen murmured without turning to look at Pete.

Pete leaned closer to Kathleen, “Is there a reason my beautiful neighbor is avoiding my gaze?” He whispered to her, ma-king Kathleen’s heart skip a beat. It was all she could do not to shudder in awareness.

Kathleen swallowed h@rd as she shook her head. Even her couldn’t un-derstand what was going on or why she was finding it so difficult to meet his gaze. What was she feeling so embarr@ssed about? It wasn’t like she could remember doing anything wrong, or could she?

“Or perhaps you had any unholy dream regarding me last night?” He whispered in her ear again, ma-king Kathleen turn to look at him in surprise. She quic-kly turned away from him and looked ahead of her when she saw the grin on his face. Unholy dream? How did he know about that? Did he even realize they were in church?
***********

Ken pushed his l@pt©p away and stood up when he heard the sound of his doorbell. He was yet to step out of his ap@rtment since he woke up from sleep that morning. He had just showered and decided to p@ss time by watching a movie since he was in a foul mood after his misun-derstanding with Ella the previous evening.

He opened the door and walked away when he saw it was Ella. She quic-kly reached for his hand to hold him back from leaving, “Don’t be like that nau. I’m sorry.” Ella said apologetically.

Judging by how beautiful she looked, and the fine ankara go-wn and high heeled sandals she was wearing, he could tell she was just returning from church, “How was service?” He asked, not wanting to talk about what had transpired between them the previous night. He still felt very offended by her unwarranted accusation and insults, and had only wanted to clear the air on his end before leaving, hence he had called Jessica.

“Don’t do that. I know you’re angry with me. Let’s just talk it out plea-se.” Ella said with a pout as she embr@ced him.

“I’m not in the mood. I’d rather not talk about it.” Ken said as he stood still while she held on to his w@!st.

“Femi nau. I know I overreacted…”

“Overreacted? You call that an overreaction? Overreaction is something you do when there is a reason for you to react in the first place. I didn’t give you any reason to react the way you did.” Ken told her quietly.

“You were avoiding your calls. What was I supposed to think?” Ella asked with a confused frown as she pu-ll-ed away from him to look into his angry face.

“Do you even trust me at all? Like do you have any iota of trust for me?” Ken asked looking into her face.

“That isn’t the point.”

“It isn’t? Are you sure about that? Because I’m very sure you wouldn’t have reacted that way if you so much as trusted me no matter how little. I’ve explained to you why I avoided you back then. I’ve asked your forgiveness. What else do you want me to do so you don’t bring it up at every damn opportunity you get?” Ken asked in a slightly raised voice. He couldn’t believe their relationsh!pwasn’t even up to a week old yet they were alre-ady having such misun-derstandings.

He took in a de-ep breath and walked away from where she was standing so he could put some space betw them.

“I’ve admitted that I was wrong, and I’ve also said I’m sorry for reacting that way. What else do you want me to say? If the situation was reversed and I was the one who used to go out with lots of men, won’t you find it suspicious when I start avoiding their calls?” She asked in a slightly raised voice too, ma-king Ken look at her in surprise.

“That is what this is about? My past? Is that it?” He asked in disbelief, “You have always known that about me, so how come you’re reacting this way now?” He asked sounding disappointed.

“Knowing it and facing it are two separate things.” Ella said as she moved over to where he was again, but he moved away from her.

“You know what? I don’t want to do this right now. Let’s just forget it.” Ken said before turning around and heading for his be-droom.

“Femi wait!” Ella called and ran after him.

“Bella Seriously, I can’t do this right now. I’m not in a good mood and I don’t want to say anything I might regret. So just forget about it.” Ken said without looking at her as he l@yon his be-d and picked up his l@pt©p.

Ella stood there not knowing what else to say or do as tears gathered in her eyes. She had come here to apologise yet she had ended up ruining his mood even more. Perhaps she was going about it all the wrong way? She didn’t want their relationsh!pwhich had just started to end alre-ady because of her trust issues or insecurities.

She had wanted to call Tracy so she could confide in her about it, but hadn’t wanted Tracy to start thinking the worse of Ken, so she had decided to handle it herself by driving down to his house to talk things over and apologize. Annoying him or quarrelling hadn’t been a p@rt of the plan.

“Why are you just standing there? Take off your shoes and get on the be-d, unless you’re going somewhere else.” Ken said, cutting into her thoughts without looking at her.

“I thought you were mad at me?” She asked, trying to control her emotions as the first tear dropped.

“Being mad at you doesn’t mean I don’t love you anymore or that I don’t want you around.” Ken said with a frown as he turned to look at her and sat up.

He was startled to see tears glistening in her eyes, and he felt his anger slowly dissipate as he stood up to meet her, “How come you’re the one who started this argument and you’re also the one crying?” He asked in confusion as he wiped her tears with his thumb and led her to sit on the be-d. He knelt down in front of her and took off her sandals from both legs before sitting beside her on the be-d.

“I’m sorry.” Ella murmured when he drew her closer to himself and held her so her head was resting on his che-st.

“It’s okay. I’m no longer angry. It’s difficult to stay mad at you when you look so beautiful in your Sunday outfit.” Ken said with a small smile.

“I’m really sorry. You didn’t deserve what I said.” Ella continued ma-king Ken pu-ll away from her so he could look into her face.

“Listen, for ANY relationsh!pto thrive, trust is very vital. Love won’t be enough to keep this relationsh!pif you won’t trust me. I want you to un-derstand that flir-ting around with different ladies was a choice for me, not an habit. Choosing to give that up just to have you is also my own decision, since I’d rather have you than a thousand other ladies.” Ken k!$$£d her forehead, “Hurting you once was bad enough. I wouldn’t deliberately do anything to hurt your feelings a second time, you should know that.” Ken said as he looked into her face.

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“St©p telling me sorry. Just don’t bring up the past next time, plea-se. We are trying to build something together, and you’ll keep taking us backward if you keep bringing it up, so plea-se consciously make up your mind to trust me.” Ken pleaded before embr@cing her again.
*********

Kimberly yawned as she opened her eyes when she perceived the aroma of something delicious, “Good morning sugar pie.” Eric greeted her with a grin as he placed the tray of food on the be-d beside her, before k!ss!ngher on both sides of her cheek, and then her forehead before dropping a k!sson herl-ip.

“Breakfast in be-d as promised.” He announced.

“You’re feeling okay now?” Kimberly asked with a concerned expression on her face as she sat up and looked him over.

“You could say that. I hope you sle-pt well?” Eric asked as he sat down beside her, and placed the tray of food between them. The tray contained a plate of fried noddles with fried eggs and a cup of tea.

“Yes, I did. This looks and smells nice.” Kimberly said with a happy smile as she picked up the fork on the tray and pierced a sliced sausage.

“It tastes even better. You should pray before eating.” Eric told her softly.

Kimberly hesitated briefly before dropping the fork. She murmured some words of thanksgiving and said a loud amen before picking up the fork once again.

Kimberly closed her eyes as she chewed slowly, “Hm… You’re right. It tastes really nice. Are you sure you don’t want me to open a small restaurant for you?” She asked ma-king Eric chuckle.

“Nah. Thanks.” Eric said as he kept watching her while she ate happily, “I’ll be stepping out to meet with my friend soon. You should work on those corrections I highlighted in the proposal before I get back, so we can add finishing t©uçhes to it. That way it will be re-ady before your meeting with Tunde tomorrow afternoon.”

“Tomorrow?” Kimberly asked, sounding slightly surprised.

“Yes. Why? Is it too soon? I thought you would be happy you’re meeting with him.” Eric said as he kept watching her closely.

“I’m just surprised, that’s all. Don’t worry, once Prisca gets back from church I’ll go over to her ap@rtment so we can work on it together. Thank you.” Kimberly said as she kept eating.

Eric couldn’t help feeling slightly anxious about his plan. After she left the room the previous evening, he had finally returned Chuka’s call so he could give him a heads-up on what was going on.

“Thank God you called back. I’ve been wondering what was wrong with you. Were you high on weed? What were you talking about?” Chuka had asked immediately he received the call.

Eric had then walked into the bathroom, and shut the door behind him before going on to explain the situation to Chuka.

Chuka whistled, “Your father sha. How does he expect you to wra-p up everything in two weeks?”

Eric sighed, “I have no idea. But I’m sure I’ll figure it out.” Eric said confidently.

“That’s if your sister does not b!ow everything before you finish. You should call her to order before she pours sand in your garri.”

“I’m sure she will be more careful going forward. Anyway, remember what I told you about my plan? I will st©p by at my house so we can talk, and then I’ll tell you all you need to know and what you have to do.”

“I guess I’ll be meeting your wife soon.” Chuka had said with a grin.

“I guess so.” Eric had said before hanging up. Now all he could do was pray that Kimberly wouldn’t disappoint him.

“You seem to be thinking a lot these days.” Kimberly observed as she watched the thoughtful expression on his face, “Don’t worry, I won’t ask what you’re thinking so you don’t have to lie to me.” Kimberly said, flashing him an @ssuring smile.

“Thank you.”

“The least I can do is been un-derstanding.” Kimberly said with a shrug.
