Chapter 23 💝 24

Leo was seated on the bench watching the marathon racers preparing for their match when Stephanie came to join him.

“Where did you go to? I was hoping to compete with you during the beauty contest but instead that stupid Wilfred ended up standing in for you making me lose, have never lose in my life and it still em…..are you even listening to me” Stephanie said earning his attention.

“Sure” Luke replied turning to stare at her but Stephanie had followed his gaze only to see that he was starring at Valerie.

“Are you worried about her winning the marathon?” She asked as a mischievous smirk appeared on her face.

“Well you should stop over thinking cause she won’t be winning this time around ” Stephanie added.

Leo gave her his full attention on hearing what she said last.

“Why do you say so? Don’t tell me that you….”

“Yes I did some thing. I tampered a little with her aid listener, So don’t worry victory will be ours this time around” she said.

“Is everything in check?” Lucas asked Chloe and five other girls who were participating in the marathon.

“Yes” they all replied in unison.

Chloe who felt her aid listener to feel a little strange was busy fixing it properly in her ear.

While the other girls went to the starting line, Lucas approached her.

“Having problem with that?” He asked.

“No” she answered fixing a smile on her face.

“Good cause an operator will be speaking to you through it, he will be telling you which path to take during the race, so make sure to have it on always” He said while she nodded.

“And also Bryan mentioned some thing about your leg, if you are hurting you can just quit and…..”

“No, I must do this, I need to do it and I will do it!” She said strongly turning her gaze to Bryan who was seating amongst other students watching her.

“Fine then! Go join the others” Lucas said and quickly she went to starting line.

Chloe silently said a prayer even as the whistle was blown and they all began to run.

They were on the track heading to the next lane which will lead them into the other part of M&M academy when she began to feel the pain but Chloe pushed it aside as she kept running being the first while other girls followed from behind.

Half an hour later, Chloe and the girls were still running when her aid operator began talking to her.

“You must have gotten to the path which leads to two different direction, take the one by your left” the operator said and immediately Chloe took the left path.

She could feel her breathing receeding and hopefully pray that she gets to where water will be.

“Now take another turn ” the operator said and she did as he said.

“Now follow the path you see in front of you” he said a while later and that was she noticed some thing was off.

The path he kept telling to take seemed lonely and rough.

Whenever a Marathon takes place, they are always some sign you see on the street, like a flag or some thing but there was nothing.

She didn’t know much about the race but she did know the basics.

“Are you sure this is the right path?” She said into the mic.

“It is, just keep on going” the operator answered with much force than was necessary.

“You aren’t a real operator right?” She asked suddenly only for the line to be cut off.

Chloe pulled off the aid listener and threw it on the ground in anger.

Taking a deep breath, she began running back, following the path he asked her to take.

She got to the two path way from earlier only to see one of her team mate.

“Valerie! Why are you coming from there?” The girl asked.

“My aid listener was toyed with. Let me borrow yours” Chloe said taking hers.

“Just so you know four other girls are ahead of you. Wish you luck” The girl said glad of giving up.

Back at the sports area, Every one sat with anticipation, waiting to see the first runner to run past the camera which they had positioned on the way to monitor them.

When a girl from Team Diamond ran past it, every one from team Diamond began screaming out in excitement.

“What’s going on?” David asked on seeing the second runner who turns out to be a team Diamond too.

“Where’s Valerie?” Luke muttered when the third and fourth runner ran past and there was still no sign of Chloe.

“Let’s just wait and see guys” Lucas replied trying to assure them too.

Bryan who sat silently with out saying a thing wondered why Valerie hadn’t shown up.

Could her injury be the cause of it? He thought just as every one from his team screamed out in excitement.

Starring at the screen, he saw her ran past and judging by the way she was running, he could tell that her leg was hurting.

Will she make it?

“You can do this Chloe, just a few more run and you will get to where water is” Chloe muttered to herself as she kept running.

She got to the table where water was kept for the runners but it was all empty.

“Why is this happening!” She murmured as she continued running.

First it was her listening aid and now it’s the water.

Whatever, she will make it even with out those two things, She thought as she kept running.

She ran past two other girls that were ahead of her and when they ran into M&M academy, Chloe ran past the third girl leaving only one left.

Back at the sport arena, Team Diamond let out a scream when the first runner who appeared is a girl from their team.

“We are gonna lose” David murmured just as Team Alpha let out a scream too cause the second runner who showed up was Chloe.

Chloe could feel her whole body feeling weak but she couldn’t go weak, not in front of the people who depended on her and certainly not in front of Bryan.

That last thought fueled her into running fast.

She kept running until she over took the girl from Team Diamond.

Team Alpha let out a scream when Chloe began leading.

She was close to the finish line when the pain from her leg became unbearable and losing her balance, she fell on the floor quieting down every one from her team.

Seeing this some one from team Diamond stood up saying.

“You can do this team Diamond, you can do this!” He yelled while his other team members began yelling at the girl who was still running towards Chloe.

On hearing that Judy stood up too yelling out.

“You can do it Valerie! Get up!” Judy screamed even as Pearl joined her.

Soon every one began to yell out Valerie’s name.

Chloe would have love it if they were screaming out her name but then she’s only an imposter.

An Imposter who will soon lose, she thought trying to get up but the throb in her feet couldn’t let her achieve that.

She didn’t want to lose. For the first time in her life, she wants to win and she will win.

Having that last thought in mind, she stood up and even though her foot hurt her, she stood up and began running again.

“Just a few more and you will get there” she murmured as team Alpha kept screaming out Valerie’s name.

Chloe let out a relieved sigh when she made it to the finish line.

She collapsed on the floor while every one from her team left their seats to go to where she is.

Judy and Pearl made it to her and while they help her up, others gathered around them.

“Are you okay?” Judy asked.

“I need water” Chloe muttered just as some one went to get a water for her.

She gulp it down like it’s the last water she will ever drink.

“Hurray to Valerie!” Some one yelled out even as they all began clapping for her.

“You did well bestie” Pearl said in excitement.

“But your foot, are you hurt?” Judy asked.

On hearing Judy ask that got her thinking of Bryan.

“Help me up” she said to Judy and Pearl who did that.

She looked around and when she spot Bryan some distance away, she began limping towards him.

Walking past Leo who was with Stephanie.

“See! I did it” she said breathlessly.

“Dummy! You almost killed yourself” Bryan admonished which got her chuckling.

“But I still won the race which means you will stick to your promise” she stated.

“You won the race and it’s only right that I do as have promised” he replied.

“Tha ….. that’s great” she said even as she shut her eyes, falling straight into the startled Bryan arms.

“Valerie!” Judy and Pearl yelled as they ran towards Bryan.

Bryan lifted Chloe into his arms and began to head to the school infirmary but Leo who was standing by the way stopped him.

“Let me” He offered wanting to take the unconscious Chloe from Bryan.

But Bryan tightened his hold, feeling possessive over her.

“Get out of my way” he said to Leo who looked up at him in surprise.

“Just let Bryan take her” Stephanie said pulling Leo out of their and quickly Bryan took her to the infirmary.

SCHOOL INFIRMARY

Chloe woke up only to find herself in the school infirmary.

She let out a groan when she felt her foot hurting.

“It feels like have been run over by a car” she mumbled as she tried to seat up.

“That would have been much better” Bryan said suddenly which got her gasping out in fright.

“Why are you here?” She asked.

“I offered to stay here” he replied moving towards her to help her seat up.

“Thanks” she said feeling a bit over whelmed by his presence.

“What about my friends?” She asked.

” I told them to leave,the after party is being celebrated right now” Bryan said.

“And they left me to go party, how cruel” Chloe said jokingly.

“They wanted to stay but I persuaded them to leave” Bryan replied.

“Why?” Chloe asked.

“Cause we both have a lot to discuss and don’t worry about the privacy, we are the only ones here” Bryan told her.

“What do you want us to talk about?” Chloe asked.

“Every thing? Tell me why you are doing this? You wouldn’t go as far as to risk your life if it was just a joke” He told her pointedly.

“I told you that it’s important to…..”

“Why is it important to you? Is Valerie dead?” Bryan asked guessing the truth but since she’s made a vow to keep her mouth shut, she chose not to answer.

“I can’t tell you a thing with out Carmen permission” Chloe confessed.

“Carmen? Valerie’s house keeper?” He asked and she nodded in return.

“She was the first to figure out that I wasn’t Valerie and I made a promise to her not to say a thing. She’s went on a trip and am not sure when she will be back, can you be patient till then?”

“I promise that when I get her permission, I will tell you every little thing” she added.

“So I have to wait for this Carmen to return?” Bryan asked and she nodded in return.

“Trust me when I say that am doing this for a good cause” She said taking hold of his hand

He stared at their linked hands for a while before pulling away.

“Fine then, I will wait until Carmen returns and when she does, I expect you to tell me every thing ” He told her while she nodded in reply.

“Do you want me to call the chauffeur or…..”

“Chauffeur? ” She cut in abruptly.

“Yes, Chauffeur. You are injured and You’ve got to get some rest, the song blaring out there won’t let you get that rest and so I suggest you go…..”

“No! Am not going home with out taking a glimpse of the party” Chloe said firmly.

“You plan on partying with that leg?” He asked.

“I plan to. After all I won for the team, it’s only right that I get to enjoy the after party” She said while he shook his head.

“Assuming you indeed go to the after party, what clothe are you planning on wearing cause you reek in that sport gear” Bryan said.

“No worries! I brought a dress which is safely in my locker,can you help me get it?” She asked pouting slightly.

“You really are some thing. The real Valerie wouldn’t treat me this way” Bryan said.

“But am not the real Valerie so kindly help me get my dress” she pleaded which got him sighing out in frustration.

He turned to leave when a thought came to him and he turned back to her.

“What’s your name?” He asked.

“Chloe, Chloe Winters” she replied.

“Chloe” he muttered letting her name run along his lips.

“It suits you” he added before leaving the room while Chloe kept grinning like a fool, touched by the compliment…..
