CHAPTER 33: WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR?

By; Holland Cisca.

Anastasia thought that she should meet the secretary since she is the closest person she knows in the company. She went to the secretary’s office with the money.

She knocked on the door. “Excuse me, ma’am.”

“Miss r-manoff.” She called, surprised to see her. “It’s you. How may I help you?” She asked.

“Is your boss around?” She asked.

“He’s not coming today. But you can tell me whatever it is you want to tell him.”

“Well, I came to return your boss’s balance. His payment was twenty dollars but he dropped forty dollars on the table. I thought maybe he must have done it by mistake, so I came to return it back to you.”

“Oh, he must have forgotten. But thanks by the way.”

Anastasia drops the money on the table. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Anastasia leaves the room, heading back to her shop.

She sees Bella, her college friend standing outside her shop. She was busy with her cell phone, then she placed it on her ear.

“Yeah, I’ll be on my way soon. Thank you.” She said and hung up the call.

“Bella?” She called, to be sure and not to disgrace herself.

Bella turns to her, her mouth wΒ‘dened in surprise. “Oh my gosh! Ana is this you?” She asked in amazement.

Bella was her college friend since their first semester. Then during their third year in college, Bella told her that she was leaving New York to Chicago. Who knew they’d accidentally meet on a day like today?

“Bella!” They ran into each other’s arms, placing a kΓ—ss on each other’s cheeks. “I’m so happy to see you.”

“Me too. Look at you, you’ve grown so big.” She said, causing Anastasia to blush.

“Come on, I don’t think so. You’re the one who has grown so big. Look at you, you work in a big company while I work in a small restaurant.”

“Hold on, you own this restaurant?” Surprised, she asked.

Anastasia points at the sign above the door. “That’s me. Ana’s Food Restaurant.” She said, smiling.

“And you still say you aren’t a big woman yet?”

She chuckled. “Well, that’s by the way. How have you been all those years?” She asked.

“I’ve been good, you know. Really good. What about you?” She asked back.

“Same here. You didn’t tell me you were coming to Chicago.”

“I didn’t tell any one I was coming to Chicago.”

“So how are your parents?” The question could have been good to Anastasia but not any more. It only reminded her of a memory she sworn never to think of. Leading her to another memory that almost tore her life apart.

Tears slowly rolled down her cheek. “What’s wrong, Ana? Why are you crying?” She asked.

Anastasia wished she had never asked her that, but on the other hand, it wasn’t her fault asking. “Did some thing happened to them?” She asked, already growing worried at the way Anastasia was crying.

“Bella…” She sniffed, “they’re… they’re both gone, Bella. My parents are dead.”

Bella felt pity for her, she hug her tight to herself. “I’m sorry for your loss, Ana. I wished I never asked in the first place.”

“It’s not your fault, you were only asking because you cared.”

Bella broke the hug. “Mind telling me what happened?” She asked, curious to know.

“Let’s go in,side, and I will tell you every thing.” They went in,side Ana’s shop, sitting on one of the vacant tables. “My father was a debtor to one of the infamous gangster in New York City.” She started. “He did tell me a lot about this group but he never told me he walked for them.

Things were going perfectly well, but we never knew the life we were living was from a borrowed debt. Then one afternoon I was returning from school, I was with mom. She was returning from the market, so I helped her with the stuff she bought. We never knew we had visitors in the house.

When we returned home, there were about five men and among them was an elderly man who turned out to be the leader of the gangster, Mr Vito Escobar.”

Bella’s jaw dropped open as she stared at Anastasia surprised. She has heard a lot about the Escobar family. Who hasn’t heard of them in the state?

“Oh my goodness, your father made a deal with the wrong man.”

“Right before my eyes they killed him, and my mother pleaded that they should kill her too. That’s how I lost them.”

“What about you, did they did any thing to you?” She asked.

She scoffed. “It could have been better off if they had killed me along with my parents, but it turns out that my father made a bargain with Vito to take me in repayment for his debt. So foolish of him to think he’d survive if he had offered me out.”

“Holy Mary. Tell me this didn’t happen.”

“I’m fu*king serious, Bella. Right now as I am talking to you, I ain’t a vΓ—rgiΟ€ any more.”

Bella wore a surprise look. All these were beginning to sound strange to her. “Mr Vito fu*ked you?” She asked to be sure.

“No, his first son did. His name is Michael. Not once, and not twice. He fu*ked me until I bled, but all thanks to Clarabelle, my friend, she helped me.”

“This is serious. Why didn’t you call the police?”

“I never had the chance to. My freedom now is only by luck, and I couldn’t waste it on calling the police. I had to come here because he asked me to.”

“Who?”

“Mr Vito.” She replied. “He gave me half a million dollars to come to the state because of some certain reasons he was avoiding to become a reality.” She said, rolling her eyes.

“What reasons?”

“His sons are fighting against each other, and he thinks it’s my fault it’s all happening.”

“Is it?”

She hesitated, but finally said the word. “Kinda. His last son and I are kinda getting along with each other, which has some how brought us closer than we expected. So, Micheal the very one who raped me, I guess he’s beginning to love me so, it’s kinda causing a love war between them.”

“Hold on, that shit hole bastard wants to get you back after every thing he’s done to you?” Anastasia shrugged her shoulders. “That dude is a bastard. Don’t even think about accepting him.”

“For now he wants me to forgive him.”

“Have you?”

“Not even in my dreams. On the other hand, I do want to forgive him, but I can never let him into my life the way I did to his brother.”

“I don’t wanna convince you to do things you don’t wanna do, but left for me, I don’t want you to forgive that wretched bastard for any damn reason. I don’t see why he has to be so wicked and heartless to you for a crime that had nothing to do with you. And if not for any reason, why does he have to push you in between your legs?!” Bella was already getting pissed off with Micheal even though she hasn’t seen him. One may even mistake her to be Micheal’s victim.

“That’s why I hate men, they are so ridiculous.” She scoffed. “What about the one you’re into, has he touched you yet?”

“Not yet. He’s just trying to get easy with me. He’s cool though. Some times I try not to tell him any thing because he gets more worried and angry for my sake just like you are now. And I guess that’s why he gets into a fight with his brother because of me.”

“I wish you two would get married.”

“Bella? Come on, it hasn’t gotten to that yet. We’re still… boyfriend and girlfriend to each other. And besides, I doubt his father or brothers will accept that.”

“It doesn’t matter. If he does love you so much, he’ll take you outside the state to some where else, not minding what they think or say.”

“He can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because his father has made him the next mob leader, he can’t change his mind.”

“He can. There’s some thing you just don’t know about love, Ana. If some one desperately loves you, he will do every thing, no matter what it takes to have his love back. And not even a gang empire can stop him. If he truly loves you, then I am pretty sure he’s some where, out there, searching for you.”

She never thought that Pablo would leave his home in search of her. For so many reasons she believed he wouldn’t come after her. First, his father. Then second, she had told him to stay back in her letter.

“He won’t.” Bella raised an eyebrow at her. “Because I told him not to. I wrote him a letter and I told him not to come after me. I’m pretty sure he read my letter, so he will consider my request.”

Bella bursted into laughter. “Seriously?” She continued laughing. Anastasia kept quiet, watching how hΓ¦rd she was laughing at her. “You know you’re funny, right?” She points at her. “What the fu*k does a letter have to do with love? You can give me a letter and I can tear it the very moment I go through it. I can decide to live my life the way I want, or I can decide to hunt you down for walking out of my life unaware. So please, for damn sake, spare me the letter trash. It doesn’t count.”

“You keep… I don’t know… I hate you Bella.” They laughed.

“So tell me, how is the business going?” Bella asked, changing the topic.

“It’s been…” The door opened, cutting her short. Uniformly, their gaze moved to the door. “Oh. My. God.”
