Death has always been my nightmare and never in my life did I thought that I’d brush shoulders with it again. My first experience with death was during my parents death, Luan and I were just meters away when the artillery shell dropped on our house and killed our parents and despite our distance, the blast was still strong enough to knock us down.
Although so many years had passed since that tragic incident , I was still shaken by that experience and hoped never to witness anything like that but this afternoon, I was inches away from the clutches of death and here’s how it all turned out.

After I found out that my own brother was having an affair with Elizabeth, I was bothered throughout the morning. I couldn’t concentrate on work thinking about the consequences of his actions. I don’t have any problem with the kind of lady Luan dates but Elizabeth is a different one entirely.
She’s our boss and could literally fire us all if she wanted and nobody would dare to question her. Elizabeth is a good and patient lady but she’s also the kind of lady that doesn’t like being taken advantage of. I’ve come to realize that when she’s dealing with her customers who purchase her honeys 🍯, they tend to take her for granted because she’s a woman but they’ve later come to regret their actions and started to treat her with respect.

Hours later after barely finishing my chores, I spent some time alone to myself and later chatted with Njeri and finally took an excuse from Elizabeth, leaving the farm house to see Toby. I wanted to report to him about the situation that was at hand and hopefully make him talk some sense into Luan.
As I arrived at the house, I s₱0tted Luan and Toby together with some man entering the house, they all looked suspicious to me cause they were acting as if they were hiding something. Immediately they all entered the house, I approached the house quietly and stood by the door hearing their voices from within. Curiosity got hold of me and I decided to eavesdrop and hear what they were discussing.
While listening to their conversations, I realized that they were talking about Elizabeth and her husband, I didn’t hear everything but I figured out it had something to do with Elizabeth’s knowledge about her husband’s line of work.
In that moment, I got stricken by bad luck as I nearly jumped in fright when a little rat zipped past my feet. In my sudden moment of fright , I stepped away from the door making some noises with my hærd cover shoes and as soon as I did that, the conversation that was going on in,side ceased completely.
Just then in that moment, 2 loud guns shot went off piercing through the door. I scre-med out loud as one of the bullets zipped past my left ear. I quickly collapsed on the ground and embraced myself, closing my eyes shut.
The realization of being inches away from death paralyzed me physically and mentally , if I hadn’t moved away from the door that bullet would have pierced my skull and splattered by brains on the ground. Shortly after I collapsed on the ground ; Luan and Toby came out of the house and rushed to my side. Both of them had worried looks on their faces as they checked to see if I was okay.

Toby ➡ My God! Marian, talk to me. Are you alright?

Luan ➡ Sister! Sister!… ARrrgghh.

Toby ➡ Check her boy. Has she been hit?

Luan ➡ No. No. She’s okay.

Toby ➡ Thank God.

Quincy ➡ Is she alright?

Toby ➡ Are you mad?? What was that for? You could have killed my god daughter.

Luan ➡ He would have paid with his life.

Quincy ➡ I’m sorry. It’s just that I’ve been getting edgy lately. You know how my line of work is Toby, someway somehow there’s always someone following me. I have to be on alert.

Quincy ➡ You have no idea what these enemies of ours are capable of. They’ll do anything to get the job done.

Toby ➡ In the meantime, Let’s take Marian in,side and see how she’s doing.

After Marian carried into the house, she was nursed back to sanity and immediately after that, The 3 men continued their conversation quietly and discreetly so that their female guest wouldn’t hear. Unfortunately, Marian was already listening on them again but this time she did it from a safe distance and after she had heard and understood what was going on, she decided to give her own opinion on the matter as well.
So as the men were talking amongst themselves in the living room, Marian appeared and interrupted them, politely.

Quincy ➡ As I was saying before, we should keep our eyes on Elizabeth, just in case.

Luan ➡ I’m telling you that Elizabeth is clean. We shouldn’t bring her into this. Her husband needs to be dealt with personally and privately.

Marian ➡ My brother is right.

Quincy ➡ The young lady’s awake.

Toby ➡ Thank goodness. Marian are you alright?

Marian ➡ I’m fine sir.

Quincy ➡ I hope you haven’t been eavesdropping on our conversation.

Marian ➡ After hearing Elizabeth’s name I had to. She doesn’t know anything about her husband’s work.

Quincy ➡ And how do you know that?

Marian ➡ Because I’m closer to her than any of the servants and I spend most of the time with her. All she does is stay in,side the house where she spends most of her time and then sell honey to her clients that’s all.

Quincy ➡ Hmm.

Toby ➡ So what now Quincy?

Quincy ➡ I have a feeling that traitor will be back soon. I just want to know when. You Marian.

Marian ➡ Yes sir.

Quincy ➡ Can you do us a little favor?

Marian ➡ Sure.

Quincy ➡ I would like you to keep an eye on your Mistress’s activities. If she gets any kind of letter or goes to someplace she has never been to before, let me know.

Quincy ➡ Of course but it’s for a great cause. Your Mistress’s husband is a German spy and the very reason why your brother and god father are here at home. If it wasn’t for Luan’s quick thinking, the two of them would have been sh¡pped back in coffins. You have to do this.

Quincy ➡ Good. Okay Toby, I have to take my leave. I’ll send you a letter ✉️ if any new happens.

Toby ➡ Alright then, safe journey and watch your back.

Quincy ➡ I should say the same to you. Good day everyone.

As soon as he took his hat and coat, Quincy took his leave, leaving the siblings and their god father in a state of silence. After Quincy’s departure, Marian confronted Luan for hiding all this from her, including Toby.

Marian ➡ I can’t believe this. So that was why you were both back home. Why didn’t you tell me all of this?
.

Toby ➡ We didn’t want anyone to know.
.

Marian ➡ Oh so you were worried that I was going to tell people.
.

Luan ➡ What he’s trying to say is, We didn’t want people to know anything about this, not even you. If words gets out that we ran away from the army because of this , the Germans will send their spies and they will kill us and anyone who knows about this.

Marian ➡ So tell me, is your rom-nce with her a lie? Is it a ruse or an approach to get information about her husband from her? If it is, I will not forgive you.

Luan ➡ No! It’s not, okay? I love her. Every moment I spend with her is like magic. Let’s just say things got complicated along the way but I love her.

Marian ➡ What do you mean complicated?

Toby ➡ When I heard that Luan was infatuated about Elizabeth, I decided to use that as a source of getting information and so far Luan has found nothing.

Marian ➡ So he quickly decided to do the job ?

Toby ➡ No. He disagreed even now he’s still objecting.

Marian ➡ This is bad. If Elizabeth finds out about this, she’ll never forgive you, especially not when you’ve crossed the line last night.

Toby ➡ Crossed the line?

Marian ➡ Yes sir. He made love to her.

💐 ELIZABETH 💐

The Concept of S–x wasn’t something I really look forward to like most women do and as a matter of fact, I hærdly even consider it. But after doing it last night with Luan, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.

How’s South Africa? I hope you’re doing fine over there. Everyone here in Scotland misses you and they all look forward for your return.
By the way, It seems like the Germans are starting to lose. Everyone has been talking about their heavy losses for these past few months and the miserable b-stards have taken out their frustrations on the Jewish. Poor souls. What a massacre. Don’t think of coming home just yet, just stay in South until the war is over. May God help us all.
Also have you heard any word from your husband? I hope he’s alright. It would be a shame for a lovely woman like you to be a widow. Anyways, I would sure love to see your radiant face again once this war nonsense is over. So long my dear niece.

After I read the letter, I had no idea how to react. It was nice that she misses me but it was totally unnecessary for her to place that widow tag on me.
