✍️ CHAPTER TITLE ✍️: I’VE GROWN FOND OF YOU, DISGUISE.

Vera’s anxiety lessened, some distance away from the king’s abode. Annabel rubbed Vera’s palm so she would feel at ease and to assure her that she is out of problems.

Vera was feeling better and could find herself at peace according to each minute that passed her by.

Her breathing which was too heavy to inhale and exhale earlier simultaneously became normal once again.

Fear even made her scared of breathing loudly earlier, because who knows whether her breathing could cost her something big.

What if Andromeda sensed her presence?? Or Damien finding her breath to be different from the one which belongs to a man??

Anything could have gone wrong a while ago, that was why Vera kept all the reaction of hers silent and rather remained unnoticed.

Her heart still gets sour at the remembrance of seeing Andromeda but couldn’t go anywhere close to her.

Only Vera knows how much she has missed Andromeda. Only she could understand how difficult it was to see Andromeda after many months of not seeing her, and still not be able to get even an embrace from her.

It was painful yet, she had to endure everything. It was so crazy hearing Damien complaining about her sister and Caleb’s closeness.

But, the point at which she had to think about what was going on between Andromeda and Caleb was the difficulty she found at the moment.

It would be really surprising if there was something going on between them. And if nothing is going on aside from friendship between them, then Andromeda has a lot of explanation to do. She needs to explain to Vera how their friendship started suddenly.

Vera has been mute for long, Annabel was worried about Vera’s utter silence. At different moments, she has tried to stop herself from talking to Vera casually.

Damien and Caleb are in the moving car together with them. They both stopped talking after leaching out on one another. Afterward, they concentrated on their phones.

Damien was sitting close to Annabel in the car, but he didn’t even pay her any attention, as he seems too engrossed with whatever he was busy doing with his phone.

“Are you okay??” Annabel when she couldn’t be considerate with their position anymore asked.

Since it doesn’t seem like they would be arriving home anytime soon, rather could she get herself any peace, knowing full well that Vera was disturbed just because she dragged her to come with them.

Damien heard her and raised his head away from his phone to meet her face. His expression demanding for an explanation of what she had just said.

Caleb refused to get himself involved with any matter going on at their space. So when he heard Annabel asking, he crossed his mind on the fact that she wasn’t talking to him, so he doesn’t have any business with whatsoever she just said.

“I_I was asking Disguise if he was okay, and not you.” Annabel fastly said when her skin was almost hitching due to the strong stare from her brother.

When Damien heard what she said, his eyes shifted away from Annabel’s, concentrating on Vera’s.

“It’s in two days that he would be leaving, not now. Asking if he’s okay seems too early to me.”

Damien uttered, a part of him was feeling pained by what he just said. If it is true that after two days this Butler would quit working and leave them, how would everything be between him and Annabel….???

Vera has been silent, and she remained silent after nodding to Annabel, in response to what she asked, even when she knew that it would bring up another conversation.

“Well….. I can tell and ask him whatever I feel like. At least, before he would eventually leave me,” Annabel bluntly replied.

After that, Damien resumed his attention back to his phone without saying any more words.

Just as Vera was about thanking the stars that everywhere was quiet and she would resume back into thinking about her life; Caleb who never spoke a word until the moment suddenly asked,

“Earlier, you were so busy with your phone and that was a rare thing for you to do. Have you managed to find a crush on the internet??” Caleb asked.

Damien might be operating the phone at times just to kill time because he wasn’t interested in staring at him and Andromeda, but if he was doing that, his reaction would have been different from the one that Caleb had noticed earlier.

“Because you suddenly started falling in love, you’ve found a reason to stop using your scanty senses, right?” Damien coldly replied.

He was too busy trying to sort out his new problem which John had just given him. It wasn’t a fresh problem. John already asked for this earlier, but he choose not to answer because it was difficult to get.

Now in the middle of that, Caleb somehow managed to speak rubbish.

“If what you saw in there is what love is described as then you will need to see a therapist.”

“They need to gather a few points that I will tell them, and it will reveal your hidden madness and out-of-love illness that you’ve been having,” Caleb replied with words fully loaded with trouble.

“I wished I had convinced myself to stay back and not listen to your tricky lies,” Damien snapped.

“If you haven’t followed, your a*ss would have gotten peeled off before I return,” Caleb stated and afterward acted like he never spoke a word.

“John wants me to get him Crystal’s picture. I mean, I’ve not even seen her in five years, how am I supposed to get her picture?” Damien began to speak.

“He is a detective after all, are there not other ways of finding a culprit without using their images to find them,” Damien complained.

Annabel was surprised knowing that the both of them are still hell-bent on finding Crystal… Why haven’t they let her stay where she chooses to be? So far she stopped mingling in their life affairs, they should abandon her.

“I get it… So, if you were a detective, and you’ve been asked to investigate someone whose whereabouts aren’t known and you never saw them before, what else would have helped to locate them aside from seeing a picture of them?” He craned his neck to check if Damien was listening to him.

Damien’s eyes have been on Caleb’s left side of his face, he could see it from where he was behind him. When Caleb looked at him, their eyes met and they probably just glared at each other.

As if being pissed off, that was the reaction Damien’s eyesight gave Caleb. Caleb hummed in silence, then he looked away.

“I have an idea about what else we can do that could help us get what she resembles,” Caleb suggested and waited for Damien to react.

Annabel and Vera kept on listening to their conversation. Neither of them doesn’t have an idea about what distance is left to arrive at home. Or where the house is meant to be located exactly.

The car has been on the move for over an hour. If Vera thought it right, the journey wasn’t this far when they were driving out.

“I know your idea might be a stupid one, but don’t say what would get me pissed off, please,” Damien said in threatening words. He relaxed his back and was ready to listen to Caleb’s speech.

Caleb sighed, but he didn’t take what Damien said to his heart because he has always known him to be like that.

“If we are to get an artist that would draw her out, according to description, then I’m sure that we would get evidence about her appearance, without a lot of stress,” Caleb suggested.

It wasn’t at that moment that he thought about the idea. He had it on his mind earlier, he just decided to bring his opinion into daylight now.

Damien went all quiet and silent. His reaction clearly showed that he was thinking about what he just heard.

“If that is what you have on your mind, I’m sure you would be the perfect person to give the description. I don’t even remember what both her face and evil deeds resemble. All I can remember about Crystal is just revenge.” Damien spoke loudly in an irritating tone.

“Annabel can’t give any description because I’m sure that she wouldn’t keep the face of the woman who almost took her life on her head,”

“In that way, you should be able to describe her perfectly well for the artist, which you will call.” Damien’s words came out not totally in aggressive words, but they were neither meant to announce peace.

In a passive and tired voice, Caleb replied, “I’m aware of you hating her and always speaking hard of her. You get angrier than me at the thought of her matter. But, because I choose not to express my hatred in the way you’re expressing yours doesn’t make her my friend.”

“I don’t have her face saved somewhere in my brain. But just to please you, I will try my best in giving the description.”

In the manner of their exchange of words, Vera respects Caleb for always keeping everything in a calm state. She admired Caleb’s sensitivity and his ways of making use of his words. Damien is too cold and passively aggressive.

“You don’t have to get an artist. I’ll inform John to bring one over later.” Damien said, and that was how the atmosphere became tense again.

The space in the car screamed silence, without anyone saying or someone planning to say a thing.

The wonderment in Vera and Annabel’s minds finally cleared when the car truly didn’t head back home after leaving the king’s mansion.

Rather, it drove directly to where Damien’s company is situated.

They both didn’t need anyone to explain. They could both sense the environment and the big automatic banner, hanging on the building. The display on it kept on welcoming them to Damien’s company.

Also, Annabel only forgot the route to get here, she could remember this environment. Caleb once brought her here on the day she tried to be free, but unlucky for her, Caleb caught her and she landed there.

“Are you coming down with me?” Caleb asked Damien while he prepared to get down from the car.

Damien looked out through the window, and in reply to what Caleb asked him, he shook his head in declination.

“I knew you would prefer staying here, rather than speaking with him by yourself. I just want to remind you again, Damien,” Caleb while arranging his suit started saying.

“This is your company and you need to start taking up the responsibility of what belongs to you,” Caleb spoke about it.

And after he was done speaking, it doesn’t seem like Damien would reply or even go with him.

He finally decided to leave alone. He said those words for him to realize what he doesn’t want to. Caleb knew that Damien wouldn’t come along with him.

When Caleb set to leave, Annabel wasn’t who happy with Damien’s act, and she could see what was going on offered to go with Caleb.

“No problem little lizard, come and grab my arm and let’s go,” Caleb smiled softly at her.

This time around, Annabel didn’t invite Vera to go with her. All Vera did was step down from the car so Annabel would get down. Afterward, she smiled at Annabel who rubbed her palm softly before clinging to Caleb’s arm, then they both walked away.

Vera got back in the car, and sat down quietly beside Damien, with huge space between them. She doesn’t want him to find her presence disturbing. Damien had closed his eyes deeply and stopped caring about her presence after all.

*

After what felt like decades of silence, with the both of them just being there, Damien uttered some words,

“I know that I’ve asked you before, but since you’re close to Annabel and you are sad because you’re leaving soon, why not stay back and continue being the good brother that she ever had?”

The way Damien spoke calmly made her surprised. After the tension in his discussion with Caleb, how could he speak calmly like that!?

As she wasn’t expecting him to speak or even ask her something like that, it was hard for her to reply to him back immediately.

Vera found herself speechless, before eventually saying, “I just have to go master Damien. I believe that Annabel would be fine with you and Master Caleb here with her.”

Damien’s eyes were closed all along, with his head resting against the backseat. He opened his eyes after Vera finished speaking to look at her.

Damien stared like he was trying to confirm something from the stares. He had noticed something strange in the Butler’s reaction now, but because his eyes were closed, he wasn’t able to get it right. What exactly was that!?

When the idea of the Butler feeling uncomfortable crossed his mind, he immediately rolled his eyes away.

Clearing his throat slightly, as he tried freeing his head from reasoning about unnecessary things.

“I’m sure you’ve stayed enough around me to know that aside from Annabel, I’ve also grown fond of you being with us!?” Damien blurted out to her surprise.

Vera’s heart skipped. Now this feels like they are having a private conversation. Aside from the night when he lost his mind over Annabel’s pain, this is another moment they would be having a private conversation.

Although the driver was in the car with them. Aside from that, this is more like them having their discussion alone.

Vera ran out of the right words and doesn’t know what to say. What was Damien even expecting her to say after what he said!?

Damien has become fond of her? The one who shouted and made her consume hot coffee because he was cold-heartedly confessed to being fond of her!?

Isn’t that enough reason for her not to have anything to say again??

“You don’t know what to say to that? If I was you, I wouldn’t know what to say either.” Damien asked and answered by himself.

His voice was calm and his expression has soften. Damien’s appearance seemed like he never frowned before or even had a cold humor at any point in his life.

“I’ve always been a bad master to you… And you would also describe me as a cold person if you’re asked to speak about me, just like others will…” He started speaking like he was using the discussion to wave away the time.

“Let me tell you something, Disguise… People will always have a word to say about you. But trust me, if they end up in your shoe, they would do worst than you’ve ever done.” He paused, so she could reason quietly along with him.

“I’m not a good person anymore, I know that before people started saying it to my face,” Damien said.

“Although I could have stopped when I realized how bad of a human I’ve become, when Annabel had to cry because of me,” Damien’s voice was heavy.

“All the same, I just wished that I could make people believe that I was once good,” seeing the man she loves so much confessing about the character everyone and even Vera herself condemned him for made her heart heavy.

Damien didn’t even bother to let her speak when he continued, “I wasn’t born with the hatred of women in my heart. I had a crush on two to three of them while I was growing up, just like every other teenager.”

“The realization of the wickedness that could be in their heart was what made me to hate their kind,” he furrowed his brows after saying. His expression was like he just finished remembering something very painful.

It was obvious that Damien was in the state of expressing his pain again. Vera had seen him like that before.

Presently, Damien is in his weak state, but Vera doesn’t love seeing this side of him. It’s difficult having to bear this sight of him.

Whatever it may be, some people don’t deserve to see this side of Damien. One of those people was the driver who has been with them and was listening to their conversation.

Vera thinks that he doesn’t have space there in the car. At least until Damien is back to himself again. So she did the right thing by asking him to excuse them.

Vera isn’t a member of the family, she’s just the Butler. But she has a position that allows her to order other workers, just like the driver.

Aside from that, the driver knows better how close the Butler is to everyone in the Stewart family.

He stepped out of the car the moment she asked him, and Damien didn’t even react to the butler’s request either.

The Butler only did what Damien himself would have done. But since the emotion came up suddenly, he failed to realize his environment and check if it was safe to say anything about his past or even the present.

Damien felt that since the Butler is leaving soon, having an intense conversation with him as they are alone isn’t bad.

What Caleb said to him before leaving affected some delicate and rare emotional parts of him.

“You did well….” He told to Vera after the driver had gone and they were eventually alone.

“I didn’t realize earlier that he was with us. He doesn’t deserve to witness this part of me that no one knows that it exists, aside from you, after many years.”

Damien confessed he readjusted his body until his eyes and attention were set on the Butler.

It was obvious that Damien wanted the Butler to say what would comfort him, but his inner beast wouldn’t allow him to ask for help, even when it badly needs one.

Unlike earlier when she was feeling uncomfortable because he was staring at her, she felt a lot of accommodating spirit in his stares and they stopped scaring her like they used to…

“Master Damien,” she called out to him in a husky but cracky voice.

“Hum. ” Damien hummed and waited to hear from him because he knew that the Butler has something to say.

“Can I speak with you about something??” She asked respectfully, and he didn’t waste time to nod his head in approval.

“I’m sorry if what I would say tampers with your emotion. But I’m saying them for your best interest, Master Damien.” She stated while looking closely at him, to confirm if there was any cold expression from him yet.

“Don’t worry. I’m all hears …” Damien assured calmly with a faint smile that Vera almost missed seeing.

Hearing his calm voice which appears only once in a blue moon, she gained all the confidence needed and was prepared to start an ultimate conversation with him.

The truth which would come out of her words could only do two things; it may help him to trace his steps back to where he would become the better person he claimed to have once been.

Or, he would go feral and make the situation worser than it has ever been.

One must surely take place by the time the conversation ends with him. What Vera hoped was for the positive impact the words would give him to take place.

Even if it will cost a fortune for it to happen, she would still do it for the sake of her love.

Vera believes in the strength of holding Damien close to her heart, and amidst all the trials and difficulties, she would bring back the better version of him.
