Chapter 16
LYRA
DAY 2
I sang and danced in the bathroom as I bathe, after bathing, I tied my towel and went out of the bathroom only to see a woman going through my wardrobe.
‘Er….good morning? Who are you?’
‘Good morning, I’m Phoebe Danville, your new beauty assistant.’ She said nonchalantly with her back still turned to me. I could tell she was beautiful, even her curves said so and might I add she she was blessed with behind.
She was tall with slender body and curly blonde hair with crinkly strands sticking to her mid back where her hair stopped. She wore a long sleeve turtleneck with trousers, the only part of her skin I could see was the side of her face. Way to rock off nun figure Miss.
‘I don’t need a beauty assistant, I’m fine on my own.’ She turned around slowly, I almost gasped and lost my breath, she was the most beautiful peach skinned woman I’d ever seen. She was more beautiful than I expected, her baby blues shinning like what what!
Oh my God!
She’s a hundred times more prettier than mom and me and maybe even aunt Mixzi which is saying something because Aunt Mixz is damn gorgeous.
‘Wow! You’re really beautiful.’ She said astoundingly. I opened my mouth like a fish. ‘Er….you okay?’
‘Wow!’ Was all I exclaimed.
‘It’s okay if you don’t want any extravagant touch up, I don’t like it myself.’
‘Yet you studied it?’
‘Learnt actually,’ she said lowly pointing to my vanity. I walked there still looking at her. ‘I didn’t have the opportunity to go to college so I learnt this.’
‘Why? Were your parents poor?’
‘Let’s just say mother wasn’t meant to get pregnant out of wedlock and my dad….well, let’s say he hates me.’ I tilted my head thoughtfully and stared at her through the mirror.
‘How old are you?’
‘Depends, how old do you think I am?’ She asked cleverly as she brought out a dress for me. I looked at her well, she looked really young.
’28 or 29.’
’37,’ she corrected and offered me a sweet smile. ‘I look young right?’
‘Too young.’
‘Not as young as Lake, he looks like a overgrown teenager.’ She said with a faint smile, one I was suspicious of.
‘You call him by his name?’
‘Yeah, he insists. We are sort of not like but still are friends,’ I laughed. ‘That’s what he said.’
‘I know, I can identify my dad’s words anywhere.’ She walked to me and removed the towel from my hair.
‘Ah, the legendary locks. Your dad told me I would have trouble with it but he never said I would be dealing with Rapunzel. Guess I have my work cut out for me.’ I chuckled, not missing the humor in her voice.
We talked as she dressed me up, talking from boys to girls to fashion and her dreams and mine. I didn’t even realise two hours had passed. She reminded me so much of mom, in fact, she felt like mom. The way she spoke, the way she walked although mom’s was more perfect, the way she made gestures and her lazy expressions, all mom. She made breakfast for us, her food was delicious, mom couldn’t cook that much because she was sort of an asthmatic patient and she hates cooking.
The one thing I noticed was her easy vibe with dad and the way he stared at her like she was the last piece of cake in his plate.
He loves cake more than himself.
In other words, he was in love with her.
That would explain his insistence on getting me a beautifier even if I didn’t need one.
He was looking for a way to get her more closer.
Knowing him, he wouldn’t want to break the promise punishment he made to mom so he will die with that love.
Great, playing Cupid would have to be my job.
‘I’m off now.’ She announced checking her purse to make sure she didn’t forget anything.
‘Are you sure you don’t want to stay here? The transport to and fro everyday and the stress will reduce.’ Dad said poutingly and unconsciously drawing circles on the table, a thing he does when nervous and shy.
‘I’m not being paid for nothing. I also have to handle my job at the salon….’
‘I can pay you double to cover up your pay there…’
‘Lake, we’ve discussed this already. I know I need the money but it’s not just that, working there brings me joy and peace, the excitement of meeting someone new everyday. This is the only thing I know how to do, I can’t give it up and plus, who would take care of my nieces and nephews? I am all they have.’
‘I can take care of them.’
‘I don’t need anyone’s help in caring for them, you know I hate begging or pity or too much assistance. I like to work for what I earn.’
‘Okay,’ dad murmured sadly. ‘You can still change your mind you know.’
‘Plus, you know how overprotective Ernest is, I don’t think he’ll be glad about his girlfriend staying with another man. I don’t want my relationsh¡p to break.’ She smiled at him while dad clenched his fist.
This is serious.
‘Bye Lylie,’ she k-ssed my cheek, waved dad bye and walked out. I stared at him worriedly, he was going to blow a fuse with the rate at which his veins were popping out.
‘Dad?’
‘I’m off to work, I won’t be back early so don’t wait up for me.’ He stood up and stomped out of the dining room angrily and swearing for the Ernest guy.
So, he’s in love with a lady who is in love with another.
Interesting.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
‘Are you sure about this Lyra? That your dad is seriously in love with her?’
‘Yes, I know him more than anyone else and I know he loves her. That will explain why he have been acting really weird and clingy lately.’ I was at the cafeteria with Wells, Luke and Garry.
‘Are we suppose to believe that?’
‘I don’t know, I call you for the first time idiots.’
‘True,’ Wells agreed. ‘Maybe he just wants to use her like the last time.’ My head shot up immediately.
‘What do you mean by last time?’ I asked looking at all of them.
‘Nothing.’ They said sharply.
‘God helps me if you don’t start talking, I’ll drive this knife into your throats!’ I threatened seriously pointing my small knife.
‘Well, your dad might have secretly gotten engaged to a lady two years after your mom died.’ Wells said softly.
‘What!!!! And I didn’t know!!!!’
‘He made everyone shut up…..’
‘You weren’t suppose to tell her you nitwit!’ Luke yelled.
‘Oh my God, I can’t believe this.’ I scoffed tearily. ‘You mean dad….’
‘Why don’t you calm down Lyra….’
‘Two years is not enough time to mourn my mother!!!! How could he do that to me!!!!’ I scre-med as tears rolled down my cheeks.
‘Lyra….’
‘No!’ I stood up and stomped out of the cafeteria in tears. Why exactly was he lying to me? What did….two years?! ‘Oomph!’ I grunted as I fell on the floor.
‘Easy there wh¡ppet,’ Xeris said laughingly. ‘Where are you running to?’
‘Get out of my way!’
‘Whoa, you’re angry, cool. What’s up?’
‘Xeris get lost!!!!’ He wiggled his brows at me, I frowned and sighed.
‘Come on babe, smile for papa,’ he said jokingly wiggling his fingers on my face, I tried to bite it but he removed it quickly and laughed. ‘Ow! Bad babe, bad.’ He scolded. He squatted and leaned closer to my face. ‘If only you can bite my little brother with that teeth of yours.’
‘Why will I bite Xeron?’ He smirked and wiggled his brows, I understood what he meant instantly and went crimson. ‘You’re very stupid.’ I said blushingly forgetting about my anger.
‘You’re a very bad girl Lyra, I slept in the bathtub because of you last night, you’re going to pay for that with your body.’ I pushed him away and sprinted for my life. He was laughing as I ran, I s-ck at running. Before I knew it, he flung me on his shoulder laughingly.
‘Let me down!’ I yelled hitting his back with my fist.
‘Why did you do that naughty girl?’
‘Because you deserve it.’
‘You’ll pay for that soon babe, now why did you almost bulldoze me out of the way?’
‘I just found out my dad dated two years after mom died.’
‘And it’s wrong to date?’
‘But it’s not enough to mourn a woman he claims to love, a woman who bore him children, a woman who is my mother!’ He bounced me up roughly and spanked my ass.
‘He lied to me!!!’
‘Mm hm,’ he said uninterestedly. I pushed his hand away from my butt which he was squeezing to his greatest delight.
‘You’re just like him, men are so annoying.’
‘Did you bother finding out his own side of the story before concluding? The Lake I know will never do something without an aim, what do you think he’s aiming for? Why don’t you ask him first?’ I eyed his sneakers thoughtfully, he’s right. He dropped me down but pinned my body to his by my wa-ist.
I forgot about dad and looked at his body. He was wearing a red T-shirt and white crazy ripped jeans, his smile, his l-ips….aye!
‘Are you listening babe?’
‘Yeah, yes, what did you say?’
‘I know I’m gorgeous but can you please listen and adore my charms later?’ I rolled my eyes away, my cheeks heating up. ‘Let’s ditch this place babe.’ He said raking his hair s€×ily. He took my hand and ran with me.
‘Why are we running?’
‘Stop admiring me for a minute and pay attention to your surroundings love.’ I shook my head out of my daze state and I could hear scre-ms, loud scre-ms. I looked behind me and saw the army of girls chasing us, all scre-ming his name.
Why didn’t I notice this before?
*you were lost in planet X* my mind teased. I giggled and ran faster, my heart running faster than my feet.
We ran outside, he brought out his car keys with his other free hand and beeped the roof of his car open. He let go of my hand and ran to the driver’s seat, I jumped into the passenger seat. He started the car and sped off still laughing, his gold BMW i8 convertible hybrid sport moved with speed and grace.
‘Here,’ he said handling me a shade. I took and wore it. I stood up, the wind beating against my skin and my hands struggling to remove my hairband. I let it loose, my long hair flipping out of the car immediately and celebrating it liberty. He stepped on the gas and played a song, adding to my dramatic moment. I raised my hands to the sky and shrieked excitedly.
‘Whoo hoo!!!!! Yahoo!!!! I love California!!!!’ scre-med more ridiculous words out and laughed. That moment, I let my pain go, I let all thoughts go and just focused on the squeals, the wind, the music, the road and most especially, the Xeris.
