Mrs Grassi did a final check on the pillow walls she’s built and smirked.

Just then her husband walked out of the bathroom and stopped on his track when he saw the walls his wife has set, a frown appeared on his face as he walked closer and sat at the edge of the bed.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“It’s obvious” she curtly answered.

“I mean why are you setting a wall on our bed?” he asked again, nodding at the pillows.

Mrs Grassi scoffed, laid down and pulled the blanket over her head.

“You can sleep on the couch if you don’t like the walls I built, because you’re not allowed to move the walls” she said.

“Wait, I don’t understand, what is the meaning of this?”

Mrs Grassi sprang up at once at that question and faced him with a very deep frown.

“No, I should be asking you that, Danny, what was the meaning of that? I thought you like Cassandra, why did you suddenly change your mind about her?”

“Yeah, I liked her but that was before I found out she’s from a miserable background”

“Miserable background?” she frowned at her husband’s choice of words. “I don’t seem to understand you, Danny” she said.

“Didn’t you heard her said she graduated from Lola’s university?”

“Yes, I did. But what is wrong with that?”

“That school is for poor people, we can’t benefit anything if Jayden marries her, rather she’s gonna be the one benefitting from us.. she’s gonna be our liability”

“Are you the one saying all this? Have you forgotten about our own history?”

Her husband didn’t say anything, he reached for his phone and started typing on it, pretending as though he’s not listening but that didn’t stop her from talking.

“Do you know we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t Jayden’s parents?”

“Don’t say that, I also invested in the company and…”

“That’s not what I’m talking about” she cut him off. “But we owe his parents so much”

He paused and faced her with narrowed eyes, his expression suddenly changed to seriousness.

“What are you implying? Are you trying to say I have something to do with his parents’ death?”

She tilted her head and frowned slightly.

“Whoa, whoa… you’re taking this seriously and too far, I didn’t say you have anything to do with their death…”

“But that’s what you’re implying”

“Hold on, you’re acting really suspicious right now, do you know that? And besides, I didn’t even mention anything about their death”

He wanted to say something but she narrowed her eyes and stared at him seriously.

“Or do you actually have something to do with their accident?”

He sprang off the bed at once and walked towards the window, he pulled the curtains aside and stared into the darkness of the night.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about, stopping making assumptions” he said.

“You’re making me feel I don’t know you that well, why are you being biased about Cassandra? Do you know her from somewhere?”

There was a five minutes silence, Mr Grassi turned to face his wife but leaned against the wall with his arms folded on his chest.

“Her surname sounded familiar and she looked so much like someone from my past, which is why I don’t really want Jayden to marry her” he said.

“Someone from your past?” she asked and he nodded. “Who? Is he or she someone I know?”

He shook his head.

“You don’t know her, but I’ll do some investigations to confirm and if she’s truly related to my past, I won’t let Jayden marry her”

“Your past…well, you can keep that past to yourself because Jayden will marry her” she said.

“You don’t understand, she might be….”

“I don’t wanna hear it!” she snapped at him.

She reached forward and turn off the table lamp, then laid back and pulled the blanket over her head.

THE NEXT DAY___JJ CONSTRUCTION.

“Mr Grassi, Barr Mark is here”

Jude reported walking into Jayden’s office, with Barr Mark trailing behind him.

Jayden pushed a file aside and raised his head, he stood up and reached his hand forward for a handshake.

“Morning, Mr Grassi” Barr Mark greeted him.

“Morning, barrister” Jayden replied. “Have a sit” he offered.

Barr Mark sat down on a chair in front of Jayden’s table, Jayden also sat down and faced Jude.

“Why is Cassandra still not here yet?” he asked.

“Er…I don’t know, sir, I’ll give her a call” Jude replied.

Jayden nodded and he rushed out to call Cassandra. Jayden turned his attention back to Barr Mark, he reached for some papers on his drawer and pushed them towards Mark.

“Here are the list of men Matilda’s been going out with over the years, I don’t know if it’s gonna useful on our case” he said.

“Yes, they are very useful”

Mark paused and searched his briefcase, he pulled out a file and handed it to Jayden.

“This is your marriage certificate, it’s ready but needs both your signatures for validation…” he looked around. “… er, but I don’t see your wife around”

“Yeah, she’d be here soon”

Mark nodded, he picked the papers Jayden had pushed to him earlier and glanced through them, his brows furrowed.

“Your ex-wife has some guts huh!”

“What do you mean?” Jayden asked.

Mark pointed at one of the men.

“This is Felix Alejandro Rosario, he’s an ex-convict, he was involved in some real dirty business and I believe he’s still in the business…we really need to get your daughter’s custody as soon as possible or your ex-wife might sell her off to some drug dealers”

He chuckled at his words but Jayden didn’t find it funny, he kept a straight face.

“I’ll get Cassandra to sign the certificate, we should contact Matilda’s lawyer as soon as possible”

“Good… right, next time your daughter calls you, make sure to register your conversation with her.. it’s gonna come in handy” Barr Mark said.

Jayden simply nodded.

“Alright, I should be on my way now”

“Thank you”

“Have a nice day” Mark said and headed out.

Jayden reached for his phone and dialed Cassandra’s number, but Jude barged into the office before the phone could start ringing.

“Bad news, sir” he said.

“What bad news?” Jayden asked.

“Miss Maldonado is involved in an accident!”

“What?!”

Cassandra’s pov

THE NEXT MORNING__7:57PM.

“CASSIE, WAKE UP, IT’S TIME FOR WORK!” I heard Veronica scre-ming from the living room.

Not feeling like getting out of bed yet, I reached out and sleepily grabbed an extra pillow and damped it over my head.

I released a yawn and smiled sleepily when her scre-ms were muffled, she can continue scre-ming all she want and even lost her voice, I don’t care…nobody interrupts my beauty sleep!

My plan was working just fine and I was about going back to sleep, but my pillow and blanket were suddenly ripped off me.

“WHAT THE F**K CASSIE!” suddenly echoed in my ear.

My eyes snapped open as I felt my bed shook and I sprang up at once.

“Can you tune it down a little?” I grumbled.

“Tune what down? Do you know how late you’re gonna be fine you don’t get your butts up and head to work right now?”

I waved her off and blew raspberry at her mockingly.

“Oh, please, it’s not even 6am yet and you’re already blowing off my ears” I said and fell back on the bed.

“Really?” she paused and I smirked victoriously. “Then why is my time and your wall clock saying it’s 7:57am?” she asked.

“Your time is deceiving you” I replied.

“Mm-mm” she hummed.

I grabbed my blanket and pulled it up to my chest again, but then her words registered in my head and I sprang up again.

“You said what’s the time again?” I asked, with my eyes wΒ‘dened.

“Oh, I don’t know, maybe you should ask your wall clock” she answered, pointing at the wall clock.

My eyes grew even wΒ‘der than before when I realized it’s already 7:58am and I’m supposed to resume work at 8am.

“I’m doomed, Vero” I lamented.

“Eh” she scoffed.

She walked towards my window and pulled the curtains open, then turned back to me with a sadistic smile.

“Maybe you should get up now and start getting ready, you might still be able to save your a*s” she said as she released an evil laugh.

“You could have woke me up earlier” I complained.

“Well, I tried to” she replied.

I hurried jumped off the bed and dashed into my bathroom, not before passing her a harsh glare though… mentally blaming her for my lateness.

Writer’s pov

GLASS-FA HOTEL__NEW-YORK CITY (8:11am).

A limo parked in front of the enormous hotel, catching a lot of attention and a lot of passerbys stopped. They looked at the limo with curiosity lurking in their eyes, waiting to see who’s gonna step out of it.

The driver stepped out and rushed to the backseat, he pulled the door open and a lady alighted.

Everyone gasped at the sight of her, she held up her head proudly as the sunlight k-ssed her flawless skin and enhanced her beauty.

A perfect smile was on her face as she took off her sunglasses, flipped back her blonde hair and let her eyes scanned the place.

“It’s a nice hotel” she said, giving the driver a satisfied smile.

“Thank you, ma’am”

She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply.

“I can finally breathe in the freshness of New York again” she inhaled again and nodded. “It’s so relaxing”

A man also alighted the limo and walked closer to her, he wrapped his arms around her wa-ist and placed a k-ss on her right cheek.

She giggled and leaned back on him, not minding the people watching them…after all, she has always loved being the center of attention.

“You said you weren’t coming back yet, but here we are” he said.

“Yeah, I had a rethink and decided it’s safer to be closer to my enemy than watch him from a far” she replied and he laughed.

“That’s my baby” he turned her head slightly and k-ssed her l-ips.

“Mom” a little girl called her, interrupting their moment.

She gro-ned loudly and broke the k-ss. “What a pest” she grumbled silently before turning to the little girl with a fake smile on her face.

“Yes, baby?” she asked, squatting to the little girl’s level.

“Are we going to meet dad?” the little girl asked.

“No” she answered.

“Why?” the little girl asked with a frown.

“Because your daddy hates you” she replied. “Now, be a good little girl and come with us quietly, you wouldn’t wanna be left here alone”

She turned back to the man and k-ssed him again, then headed in,side the hotel with him.

The little girl folded her arms on her chest and glared at them as they went in, she stomped her feet on the ground angrily but ran after them to catch up with them.

But unfortunately she wasn’t fast enough, they’ve already gotten into an elevator and it’s already closed before she could reach them.

“Mummy” she called, but that’s just a useless effort because her mother didn’t hear her.

She pouted her l-ips, kicked the elevator doors with her tiny legs and grunt in anger.

She reached for her pocket and pulled out her cellphone, she dialed a number and waited for someone to pick up as it started to ring.

*The subscriber you’re trying to call is not answering, kindly…*

She ended the call and redialed it, but it’s still saying the same thing.

Not knowing what to do, whom to ask questions or where to go, she decided to head back to the lounge to wait until her mom notices she’s gone and come out to look for her.

Cassandra’s pov

8:25AM.

Why is there no cab in sight just when I needed them? I guess I should have called an Uber, but then again it’s so darn expensive and I can’t afford it for now.

It’s my second time getting late since I started working, I just hope Jayden wouldn’t scold me for coming, though I’m not gonna blame him if he does.

Wait, maybe I can call Brad and…

My phone suddenly started ringing and I quickly reached for it in my bag, Brandon’s name was flashing on the screen.

Is he reading my mind? I wondered.

“Hello, Brad?” I answered the call.

“Hey, sweetheart, are you free after work?” he asked.

“Er.. I guess yes”

“Ok, I need a little favor from you” he said.

At that moment, I saw a cab heading my way and quickly reached out to stop it, but I guess the driver was too blind to see me waving at him.

“…mom with me”

“What?” I asked again since I didn’t catch what he said.

“I said, something happened at the hospital and dad’s condition got worse… ”

“His condition got worse? How’s that possible? Wasn’t it just his leg that was dislocated?” I asked.

“Yeah… I don’t know what’s going on too”

I sighed.

“Ok, I’ll come with you to the hospital later, but first, come save me” I said.

“Save you? What’s going on?” he asked, he sounded kinda panicked.

“Calm down, I just want you to come pick me up because I’m running late”

I heard him exhaled at my response.

“Er.. I don’t think that’s possible, I’m already at work and our manager is personally supervising us for some unknown reasons”

“Funk!” I gro-ned frustratingly. “Well, since you can’t help me, then get off my phone” I angrily hung up and threw my phone back in my bag.

Maybe I should start running instead of waiting here in vain, I might catch a cab along the way… Yeah, that’s a very good idea.

With that thought in mind, I started running along the pavement.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

I don’t know how far or how long I’ve ran, but I’m already sweating and p-nting like a dog, and to make things worse JJ construction is not in sight yet.

How long am I gonna continue running? I don’t think I can keep up any longer and I might collapse if I don’t stop.

As if God heard my prayers, my phone started ringing and I stopped abruptly.

My eyes searched around and I saw a small bench a few steps away from me, I rushed towards it and sat down.

I reached for my bag and pulled out my bottle of water, I opened it and took a few gulps.

“I.. I can’t run anymore, I should rest for sometime” I said to myself.

My phone wouldn’t stop ringing and I couldn’t help it anymore, I reached for it and swiped right without checking the caller’s ID.

“Hello?!” I snapped at the caller, not caring who it might be.

“Good morning, Miss Maldonado” a familiar male voice greeted me.

I frowned slightly, but recognition suddenly dawned on me and I hiccuped in shock.

“Ju.. ju.. Jude” I spluttered.

“Miss Maldonado, where are you?” he asked.

“Me?” I asked rhetorically. “I.. I.. I…”

My words stuck in my mouth when I saw a little girl of about 7 or 8, slowly crossing the main road without looking out for oncoming vehicles.

“Kids” I said and wanted to look away, but something caught my attention.

I turned again and saw a big truck coming at her in a great speed and she’s just standing in the road, staring at the vehicle in shock.

“Hey, move away from there!” I shouted, but she didn’t even hear me.

My eyes desperately looked around for someone to save her, but no one was looking her way, everyone seem to be minding their business… what is wrong with these people? Aren’t they seeing this helpless girl?

“… are you still there? Miss…”

It’s almost too late, the vehicle is just a few meters away from her and she’s still glued on her sβ‚±0t.

Without thinking too much, I ran into the road and pushed her away, but before I could jump off, I heard a loud crash and something hit me so hærd.

“JESUS!” I scre-med agonizingly.

I landed on the other side of the road, my head hit something and another agonizing scre-m left my mouth. I reached for my head and saw blood forming a pool by my head already, is this my blood or what?

My vision was blurring already, through my blurry vision I saw the little girl rushed to me and knelt by my side.

“Lady, lady are you ok?” she asked in a very scared tone.

I smiled weakly at her, but couldn’t talk when I tried to tell her I’m fine.

“Lady, are you ok?” she asked again.

My eyes were closing and I tried to keel them open, which was very hærd as people started gathering up and I felt crowded.. I started suffocating.

And soon… darkness swallowed me.

To be continued.
