Chapter 6:
It was almost middle of the night when the alarm bell rang, which means everyone are meant to assemble at the training hall.
We all got up from our bed, dressing up when we heard Mrs Johnson’s voice from the speakers.
” All candidates should gather at the hall. I repeat, all candidates should gather at the hall. ”
” Do you think there’s a problem? ” Lina asked.
” I hope not, but it sounds like there is. ”
Everyone ran to the hall, standing at attention before Mrs Johnson could arrive.
” We were informed that the wolves are in the city, this is our chance to get them. It’s time to prove what you’ve learnt. Emma will be dividing you all into two groups, the first names are the first group while the last ones are group B. ”
Emma called our names and my name with Jessica and Vivian fell at the second group while, Lina, Mariam and Alison were at the first group.
” Now, you all should return to you various rooms and get change, we’ll be leaveing in the next twenty minutes. ”
We rushed back to our respective rooms, changing into our hunting costumes.
Group A had to go with Mrs Johnson and we the group B left with Lydia. I was the only one looking so happy for this hunt or, maybe I’m not.
They were more of them as I could hear their chatters from where I sat.
The van drove very speed and we were told on where to await for the wolves.
Vivian made the sign of the cross, taking a deep breath. ” Are you scared? ” Jessica asked her.
” No,” she said. ” I’m only nervous about how this first hunt is gonna be. ”
” It’s gonna be great, trust me. ”
She nodded.
” Hello British bitch, are you scared already? ” Pamela mocked, ” Did you forget to k-ss your momma good bye? ”
” Shut the f*ck up, Mela. ” Jessica warned.
The van halted somewhere that the wolves won’t see it and we all exited from it, going to our seperate ways.
Not quite long, two black cars packed. There were five men and a lady who stepped out of the car.
Lydia had instructed us to be quiet and not to attack for the meantime.
The way they talked, they seem to be having a meeting with a different pack.
Not seeing the other pack got them more annoyed than they already were. Emma still signaled us to be still which we were.
I wasn’t scared, why? Because I’ve been in the field since I was fifteen.
This won’t be tough in any way, this isn’t my first time neither will it be my last.
More three cars packed, and some group of men came out of it. They were six men and two ladies who were bare footed.
I looked at their toes, their nails were to long to enter a shoe. They were staring angrily at the other lady who seem to be smiling at them.
” We shouldn’t be here. ” Said the leader of the last set of people who came.
” You must be f-cking kidding me right now, do you think I can wait any much longer? ” Asked the other, ” Victor knows we’re here and he’s got spies all over and you know he’ll merge with me if I ask for his help. So, if you don’t want anything to happen to both you and your packs, you better give it up or I force you to. ”
One could barely see their face, the moon wasn’t shinning so I found it difficult to recognize their faces.
I heard him chuckled. ” What’s so funny? ” The other stormed.
” What makes you think I’ll give up so easily? ”
” I don’t have to think it out, maybe you’ll have to find that out when I return with Victor. ”
He looked at the direction we were hiding, like he has noticed something.
” I’ll be waiting till then. ”
Lydia signaled us in the counting of three. When she got to the third count, we started releasing fire.
They were surrounded, so it was very difficult for them to enter their cars.
Some had to run into the woods, and some we were able to shoot. They were only three we killed.
I noticed one who had run into the woods and I quickly chased after it. He was fast, but I tried to keep up my pace.
I shot the bullet at him but he was too fast to dodge it. After a while, he stopped laughing but he was backing me.
I tried to calm my racing heart down, as I breathed not only with my nostrils but with my mouth too.
” Turn around. ” I said but he didn’t. ” I said turn around. ”
” Ashley?! ” I heard Vivian call.
” I’m over here! ” I noticed he hasn’t turned, ” I said, turn around!! ” I yelled.
Slowly he turned, but when he got halfway, I noticed his wolf form appearing.
The moment he was fully facing my direction, I felt a heavy shiver run through me.
He was different from any other werewolf I’ve ever seen, more scary and monstrous in sight.
I could feel my fingers trembling at the hold of the trigger. Why am I feeling this way? Why am I scared?
His dark red eyes staring into mine, with the growling sound he was making out of his belly, I could feel my bones shaking.
He was staring angrily at me, I was thinking he’d just eat me into halves and go like he did nothing.
But when he heard the approaching footsteps, he ran out of the wood in a blink of an eye.

Chapter 7:
” Ashley! ” Vivian called again. I turned to look at her and the others as they ran towards me.
” Did you get anyone? ” Jessica asked.
I nodded, ” But I lost him. ” I picked up my gun which had fallen to the ground.
” What were you thinking about? ” Pamela yelled.
” I had him… ” I tried defending myself but she interrupted.
” Then what? You try to be the best, you act like you know what you’re doing but you don’t! You just let him go, just like that?!! ”
I didn’t know what to say, my head was buried to the ground.
I wasn’t acting neither was I trying to be what I ain’t. Whatever happened few minutes ago, has nothing to do with me acting like I’m the best.
” Now I know what you really are, you’re a pretender and you’re weak. ” She said in a clenched teeth.
” Hey Pamela, mind your mouth. You certainly don’t know what happened, so stop yelling at her. ” Vivian defended.
” You heard what she said, she lost him. What else am I supposed to know again? ”
” Nothing. ” Jessica said, walking to her front. ” So that’s why you’ve got to shut the f*ck up. Now tell me, Mela, what attempt did you make in this hunt? Did you even try to give a shot? We’re you not the one I saw standing behind the tree while the rest of us chased after those wolves? ”
” You… ” She pointed.
” What? Are you gonna deny that? We both know I’m telling the truth and you’ll do the same if you were in her shoes. So stop trying to act the concerned one here. ”
” I’m not trying to be concerned because I aren’t and how do you know I did nothing? We never even saw each other. ”
” We don’t have to see each other before I know you did nothing, I saw you. ”
” That’s enough girls. ” Lydia said as she approached our direction. ” Mrs Johnson is waiting for us at the camp. So come on, we’ve got to go now. ”
The ride back to the camp was quiet and I loved it like that. After Lydia had whispered something to Mrs Johnson, I noticed her staring at me.
I pretended not to have noticed her gaze. She dismissed us and we returned back to our various rooms.
The cloud was getting a bit clear, I looked at the time, it’s six minutes after six.
There’s a little time for us to rest but that wasn’t for me. I couldn’t rest because I couldn’t stop wondering why I had to act so different earlier.
Lina almost dozed off, but when she turned her body to my direction, she saw how worried I looked.
” You should be sleeping, Ashley. What’s wrong with you? ”
” Pamela. ” Jessica said walking in.
” Did you just evesdropped on us? ” Lina frowned.
” No. Have you forgotten you have a loud voice? I think you need some training on that too. ” She said, sitting behind her.
” What did Pamela did to her? ”
” It’s not about her? ” I said.
” Then it’s about what? ” She asked.
I looked at Vivian who was standing beside the door. ” It’s nothing. We need to get some rest. ”
” Don’t tell me I just wa-isted my time coming here? ” Jessica said. ” You know, it’s obvious that it’s not okay. Something happened back there, didn’t it? ”
” Or was Pamela right about what she said? ” Vivian added.
” I don’t know what happened, and I don’t know why it happened. ”
” What happened? ” Lina asked, curious.
” I had him, I was putting my gun right at him but all of a sudden, I couldn’t pull the trigger. I’ve been hunting since I was fifteen, well I only hunted three times. I couldn’t continue because I had to go to college but yet, what happened last night has never happened to me. ”
” I’ve hunted things like that, and I’ve killed them a lot of times. They all looked the same to me, the annoying creatures who deserves no pity at all. But this one looked different. He was scary and… ” I heaved heavily, ” I’ve never seen any like it before. I tried to pull the trigger but I couldn’t, I felt scared. I am scared. ”
” Babe, you don’t have to. At least you tried to run after him. Who was able to do what you did? Standing before an alpha who almost had you killed? Honestly, you really were brave out there. ” Vivian told me.
” You don’t understand what it feels like when you find yourself not able to do something you’ve been doing since you were fifteen. What am I going to tell my dad? What do you think his gonna see me as? I am a disgrace to my family. ”
” Nothing, Ashley, he’s still gonna see you as his darling daughter. ” Lina said. ” You don’t have to be worried about that. Last night isn’t the final day, we still have more journeys ahead, more days to hunt this creatures. ”
” You don’t have to tell your father this if you think he’s gonna get angry. ” Jessica suggested.
” I’m not thinking of telling him, someone else will. ”
” Who? ” They asked in unison.
” Mrs Johnson, she’s a good friend of my father. ”
” I’m not surprised, ” Vivian said, ” I noticed the way she was staring at you after Lydia had whispered to her. ”
” Are you sure that’s what Lydia was whispering to her? ” Asked Lina.
” Yes, of course. Or is there something else you’re suspecting? ”
Lina shrugged.
I know that no matter how hærd I try to get an answer to what happened, I won’t find any now.
There are still more days ahead just as Lina had said, more days to catch my predators…
